21 I am amazed at the poor quality of analysis about the root cause of this crisis. In simplest terms: Deficit spending (mostly since 9/11) has provided Keynesian stimulus. Most of that stimulus put people to work -- Chinese selling us stuff and Mexicans building us stuff. Because the stimulus went to third world employees there was no wage pressure to slow down an overextend economy. All that money sent overseas came back looking fro stuff to buy -- largely securities. Meanwhile the wiz-kids on wall st. thought they figured out how to spin straw into gold using derivatives and fooled themselves and everyone else into believing that all these trends could go on forever (housing prices going up, unlimited supply of home buyers, skyrocketing current account deficits,...) What can not go on forever. will not.
