Another Grim Milestone For Democrats In Iraq- Election Law Passes Parliment

This got a little lost yesterday in all the bailout talk (and my trip to the dentist) but this is very good news.

You know that whole ‘there’s been no political reconciliation in Iraq’ talking point they’ve been using since the surge started? Deader than the hooker in Godfather II.

Iraq's parliament overwhelmingly approved a provincial elections law Wednesday, overcoming months of deadlock and giving a boost to U.S.-backed national reconciliation efforts.

Also Wednesday, gunmen opened fire on a group of Iraqi policemen and members of a so-called awakening council northeast of Baghdad, killing 22, the U.S. military said.

U.S. officials have complained privately that Iraqi politicians have failed to take advantage of the sharp drop in violence — down 80 percent since last year, according to the U.S. military — to forge lasting power-sharing agreements.

The legislation had been bogged down in a complex dispute between Arabs and Kurds over power sharing in the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, which Kurds seek to incorporate into their semiautonomous region.

Lawmakers acknowledged the delay in passing the measure would make it difficult for the electoral commission to organize the vote and pushed back the deadline for it to be held until Jan. 31, 2009.

In reading a bunch of stories on this it’s amazing how hard the MSM is working to spin this as a negative, bog it down with all sorts of caveats or just flat out ignoring it.

In fairness to our friends in the media, it must be tough to have fought so hard but still lose the war.

1 This doesn't mean that things are going well in Iraq.

Stop the war in Iraq!1!1!

2 I've got a lot of hope for this turning out well.  I want to visit Iraq as a tourist some day, and meet some of the people that made this possible.

3 Indeed so. Iraq is a great democracy now, where MP's who visit Israel are eligible to death sentence.

4 This is great news. Now when are the Democrats in our Congress going to share power with the Republicans?

In the end I voted for Bush in 2004 because I thought he would stick to Iraq no matter what.

And he did.  The Iraq war appears to be ending with success.

So I am Happy.

6 Replying to comment #3.  Democracy hardly negates the need nor the responsibility to Speak Truth to Power ...

It simply makes it easier for more people to speak.

Your alternative would be ???

7 ahh #3, your random bit of news (that muslims are still muslims) invalidates any good news! Well done!

Heh. What's that old saying? Won the battles, lost the war? We can only hope that the media's national disaster is over quickly so they can rejoin the American community.

Consider what democracy has done for us infidels. We're in the process of voting ourselves free money, at a time of financial crisis; and we're about to follow that up by electing a Chicago machine-politician / communist-sympathiser.

Now, imagine a democracy in the hands of Twelver-Shi'a Muslims, ruling over large minorities of Sunni Muslims on Saudi's border. Nothing could go wrong that a little more democracy can't fix, right?

But I agree that this election law is a "milestone". I recall an entire book of that title by an eminent Muslim scholar.

Here are my metrics for "progress" [toward stuff I like] in Iraq:

1. The number and quality of destructive and criminal acts, as recorded by a non-Iraqi source. I would like this to go down.

2. The corruption index of the Iraqi government as recorded by non-crooked international financiers. I would like this to go down too.

A bunch of Arabic-speaking Biden clones passing election laws, which they do every few months, does not qualify as "progress".

16 Does it hurt waking up everyday knowing you're a stupid lefty troll?

In a truly fair and just world, it would.

17 1. The number and quality of destructive and criminal acts, as recorded by a non-Iraqi source. I would like this to go down.

It's already lower than Chicago, Detroit, LA and NYC.  Does that mean we should pull out of those places?

2. The corruption index of the Iraqi government as recorded by non-crooked international financiers. I would like this to go down too.

Heh.  I would like to see the same thing regarding our own government as well.

Interesting metrics you have there, David.

wiserbud, aaugh! "Interesting". One step above "intriguing". I'm glad I don't have a newsletter for you to subscribe to...

At any rate I said nothing about pulling out of Iraq. I did broadly hint at ignoring its "democracy" as a metric.

On those terms I do, as it happens, support "pulling out" democracy from any American city which has proven itself ungovernable (Detroit) or else "governable" insofar as the Mafia is governed (Chicago, at least as David Freddoso has depicted it). NYC seems to be governed fairly well. I don't know enough about LA.

People who would vote themselves money out of our pocket shouldn't be allowed to vote. We don't let government regulators in the military own stocks in, say, Halliburton who negotiate contracts with the government. That is called "conflict of interest" among lawyers, I am given to understand. Why should we allow recipients of government grants to vote on what contracts they get? We already have the precedent of felons, who aren't allowed to influence criminal policy with their votes...

Posted by: David Ross at September 25, 2008 03:22 PM (A+HB5)

19 People who would vote themselves money out of our pocket shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Hey, no argument from me there.  I have always said that once someone goes on welfare, they should not be allowed to vote until they come off.

Unfortunately, as much sense as I think thinks makes, it will not happen.  And places like those I mention continue to spiral down into the massive pits of corruption they have become.

Can we really expect any better of Iraq at this point?

Posted by: wiserbud at September 25, 2008 03:30 PM (u1Kfq)

20 ...as I think this makes....

Damn, I really shouldn't try to comment sober.

I don't think anyone in Iraq cares what your defnition of success is for them, Mr. Ross.  Also, there's nothing about a Democratic outcome that suggests an optimum outcome.  It just suggests that the government will reflect, imperfectly but reflect nonetheless, the will of it's people.  The alternative is elite assholes that think their wisdom should supplant the people's.

Posted by: Bel Aire at September 25, 2008 04:48 PM (ocHBO)

23

Bel Aire: If a given "people" have bought into a delusion, then I am hunky-dory with imposing an "elite" to keep them in check. The elite would have to be very assholish to out-asshole surat al-Anfal of the Qur'an, or the teachings of Khomeini.

The US Army are the elite in Iraq right now who "think their wisdom should supplant the people's". I wouldn't go so far as to call them "assholes".

Moving along, how about Louisiana? Louisiana has idiots for every side of the red/blue divide. The peoples' wisdom says that creationism is a theory equally valid as evolution. In New Orleans, the people's wisdom re-elected Ray Nagin after the Katrina debacle. If it weren't for federal courts and federal funding, Louisiana would become an ungovernable cesspool of ignorance and poverty, with the smart people all fleeing the state. Democracy, in Louisiana, is a sham; and it is a sham because a real democracy would enable its self-immolation. Louisiana is a federal protectorate with a bogus constitution and I am fine with that. Louisiana could instead be independent and block the Mississippi, which would screw over better states to the north of it. So we're better off keeping at least the Mississippi part of Louisiana in the Union, with the limits the feds have placed on it. These limits aren't enough, because Louisiana still gets electoral-college votes and two Senators and the like, but one keeps what one can keep.

Now, whether it's in the American interest to keep Iraq as a protectorate, is another issue, and I repeat that I am not arguing that point either way in this thread. I am arguing that it is better for Iraqis if American soldiers are running Iraq than if Iraqis (or Iranians) were running Iraq. I don't care about Iraqi opinion, because most of them are of the opinion that "Islam is way cool" and Islam is in fact no such thing; I care about Iraqi well-being, despite their opinion; love the sinner, hate the sin etc, and hope that they change their opinion.

Posted by: David Ross at September 25, 2008 05:38 PM (A+HB5)

24 Imagine for a sec that the "Big Deal" being hammered out in Congress right now were not being done with mere rancor as a distraction, but that staff members of both parties were being shot dead in the street, their houses were being targeted by gangs of thugs, their families threatened with annihilation by terrorist cells.

Do you think that it would help or hurt congressional negotiations if Representative Abu from the Diyala Province said that Iraq needed to impose some sort of timetable on them to get their act together?

And yet, Harry Reid et al still sit there, looking down their noses at their truly heroic counterparts in Iraq -- and scoff.
