| I Would Boycott David Letterman, But I Haven't Watched Him Since 1995You know -- three years after he stopped being funny. Damnit. How do I boycott someone for his politics when I already began boycotting him for having gotten old, broken, bitter, and unfunny 15 years go?CommentsPosted by: Citizen Duck at September 24, 2008 10:56 PM (B0L2r) 2
Who the hell is David Letterman?
Some jock strap that time forgot I guess... Have never watched him. K Posted by: Kestrel♠ at September 24, 2008 10:57 PM (VLmsE) 3
His daytime show was awesome. After that, not so much.

Yeah because if McCain had gone on Letterman and yucked it up, nobody would beat him up for that, right?
On the upside, I did learn that Letterman was still on the air. Not that I'll watch him but it's good for, you know, trivia purposes. Posted by: DrewM. at September 24, 2008 11:00 PM (hlYel) 5
Man, I haven't seen David Letterman since his cameo in Cabin Boy.

The last episode of Dave I watched was when Norm was fired from Weekend Update and went on Dave to hack NBC (though it was Dave who did most of the hacking).

I love Craig Ferguson. His monologue where he ripped on Tom Cruise was goddamn brilliant.

Actually, Tom Cruise provides fodder for many, many monologues, but the particular one I saw was great.

Now I know I'm not missing anything when I don't watch. Such an avalanche of derision and hate from the media and entertainers, it's astounding. But some how Barry O can do no wrong. Just think, suspending the longest campaign season in history for a few days is not leadership. But, the other guy's stance was to not inject himself in the matter-"they'll call me if they need me"-what a genius he is! Letterman is just having a Barry-like tantrum because McCain cancelled on him & talked with Couric instead. Boo hoo, waaaa, etc. Just like BHO acts when things don't go his way. Posted by: Katydidn't at September 24, 2008 11:08 PM (lTXKp) 14
Meh. Letterman comes of as a thin-skinned Nero, more concerned with his shitty little show than the thermonuclear economic meltdown occurring as he stamps his feet. Listen, a week from now would you rather have had McCain suspend or have a Katrina1,000 albatross permanentlytied around McCain's neck until the election? I don't like Letterman and I don't watch him, I did watch the you tube and he has a point. McCain should have sent Palin in his place, I know she wouldn't have received a fair shake but that is nothing new for any republican. The McCain campaign is getting a lot more criticism than it needs by keeping Palin away from shows like Letterman and press conferences and in my opinion is silencing a powerful voice because someone in McCain’s world wants to protect her. From what I have seen she can do that herself and McCain is making a huge mistake. . Posted by: robtr at September 24, 2008 11:10 PM (C6ME0) 19

Letterman stopped being funny right around the time his old girlfriend Merrill Markoe left the show and the relationship. All his funny bits, stupid pet tricks, top ten, etc., all came from her. He's been coasting on fumes since 1993.

Yeah, Letterman has not been funny since 1989 or so.
But it was dumb for McCain to cancel, or at least not offer either Huck or Mitt or Rudy. Someone "name" who can go in their and fill time for Dave. All Dave Letterman wants is to fill time, and make shots at Reps. Put in Huck, and let Dave try his usual stuff. Huck, I don't like him, but he's dangerous. He destroyed Mitt with one line. Letterman was free air time to about 4 million people or so. Why give that up? Posted by: whiskey at September 24, 2008 11:19 PM (4878o) 34
OK, I got almost 5 minutes in. That's far enough. So Sarah Palin will be doing things besides Letterman's show.
I would God-Damn well hope so. Yo, Dave, get the bird callers back on, or maybe Jack Hanna can get a lorax to shit on your trousers. World-wide Pants, indeed. Or, how 'bout a box of restraining orders against some crazy lady -- "Will it float?" Or how 'bout "Great moments in Letterman stumbling over cue cards?" Good lord, dickwad, you've got exactly one job to do, in order to get paid millions of dollars a year. Alls you have to do is read a freaking cue card; and you still stumble all over your gap-teeth. But good Lord, let Bush (who, I think, has a few other responsibilities), pull a Letterman while speaking to the Troy, NY, Ladies' Home Auxiliary, and, oh, God, Letterman's got clips up featuring Dub as retard of the month. One thing I think many people overlook is that McCain is not merely a "maverick" -- he is also capable of patience and discretion when something big is at stake. To get elected, he needs to expose Obama's callowness; but if he can expose the mainstream media in the process, all the better.
Yes, I am being a ridiculous optimist. Still, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if, by the time the election rolls around, people are wondering if the Democratic Congress of 2006 was a Karl Rove plot. Posted by: The Chap in the Deerstalker Cap at September 24, 2008 11:26 PM (ktY3b) 42
If you're pissed at Dave, watch Leno. And seriously, if I were the McCain campaign, I'd get Palin on there with Leno pronto. Leno doesn't come across from what I've seen as the type to ambush a politician he doesn't like. Letterman would do it in a heartbeat. And besides, when all is said and done, Leno kicks Letterman's ass in the ratings anyway, so you'll get a bigger audience. This was predictable. Both in being ungood for McCain and unfunny for Letterman. Letterman got left with a giant fucking hole in his show and filled it pretty much as anyone would have predicted. Does this move any votes? Hell, I don't know. If it does it's from some undecided swing voting douchetools. Does this mean McCain takes some undecided swing voting douchedick to try to make up for it. Who the fuck knows. The last minute, "hold all my calls, cancel all meetings" shit is more than a little more drama than we need or want. Why didn't he send Sarah? No good reason I can think of. Another McCain moment. I taught at the university level for a good part of my life, and it became a tradition that my students would give me something very stupid or provocative at the end of the semester. Each class sought to outdo the others before it, and some of the "gift" presentations were Ace-worthy. One class gave me a gift certificate to Mother Rita, reader and advisor.
Among other things, Mother Rita told me that I would be successful, get rich, and marry David Letterman.
Odd, that. Posted by: texette at September 24, 2008 11:59 PM (h5E9R) 55
I'm a longtime fan of Letterman, but he started losing me when he had O'Reilly on and gave him shit about Cindy Sheehan. When I realized that Letterman took Sheehan seriously, the mask slipped. And of course the constant hammering of Repubs and conservatives in the monologue, while jokes about libs and Dems remain MIA. But that's showbiz; that's Dave's whole world. There's NY and LA, and the rest is that big green and brown part you have to fly over to get back and forth. And if you think Leno is different, you're wrong. Craig Ferguson is a little different. Maybe it's because he came here from Scotland and became a US citizen, his outsider view. His politics weren't learned in LA comedy clubs and NY coke dens. You get the feeling that, unlike many showbiz pukes- Rob Reiner, Matt Damon, any of the swine from The View- Ferguson likes America and Americans. He rips the shit out of Europe, too, and that's fun to watch. Posted by: Jones CO/the next Dillinger at September 25, 2008 12:03 AM (KOkrW) 56

What makes watching Lettermuff even more painful is having to put up with the incessant gap with his toadie, Paul "Astroglide" Shaffer. I figured the reason Paul shaves his head is so he can get it shoved farther up his Wet Dream's ass. Dave is carrying on like a jilted prom date. Whata pussy.

Letterman can, in the words of Pamela Anderson, who knows a thing or two about the subject, "suck it."
I hope An American Carol is as funny as the trailer suggests, as it had me laughing my ass off. I mention this because I believe that the fortunes of this unabashedly pro-America film augur McCain's. So let's get out there next weekend and see it. Posted by: Milesdei at September 25, 2008 12:12 AM (ACHxk) 62
The best days of Letterman were when Larry Bud Melman and Chris Ellott did regular cameos. The regular ensemble cast of the earlier years made the show enjoyable and tempered Letterman's dominance. When the show seemingly became all Letterman all the time with Shaffer filling in more time than other bit players, I became less interested. The Left bias seemed to really engulf Letterman after 9/11.
Funny how Letterman goes to the effort of praising a "genuine war hero" out of one side of his mouth while ripping him out the other... repeatedly. Dave gets dissed on his "entertainment" show by McCain who meets Couric, ostensibly a news show, and throws a fit. What a small man. Say, Dave, how about a few more "McCain is so old" jokes? We never get enough of them. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at September 25, 2008 12:13 AM (sI5Ho) 63
OT:
How 'bout the "boycott" of the delightful Chilean syrah wine named "Palin"? That's right, folks: Palin Syrah wine, a well-liked, affordable ($10 a bottle) wine, is being snubbed by lefties because of its name. Nevermind the fact that it's "Pay-LEEN" wine, named after a Chilean puck used in athletics. So, some media outlets are reporting that "sales have fallen." http://tinyurl.com/sfoidiots That's pretty sonofabitchin' funny, because I looked online at quite a few stores before finding one that DIDN'T say "We're sorry! This product is currently sold out. Please look for it soon - we have ordered more!" Anyway, I bought six bottles for Election Night. Thank you, Chile, for making affordable, kickass wines. This is the way I see it. I am glad McCain cancelled this appearance. I don't think that someone who is running to become President should appear on a comedy show while the nation is in a crisis. To me, that would be bad taste. Letterman should realize its not about him, but its about the people of the nation.
Posted by: KCLady at September 25, 2008 01:14 AM (Jna2g) 95
The entire point McCain suspending his campaign instead of letting Sarah carry it on was to get everyones attention back on Washington on the huge financial problem instead of on partisan politics.
The fact that Letterman and others cannot understand this concept shows how truly ignorant they are of this mans priorites. Country First. It's not hard to understand, unless you're a pompus effete egomaniac who thinks his late night little show is more important than the economy of America. Ah, yeah, Johnny Carson. He was a class act. I used to stay up later than I should have to see him when I was a kid (about 50 years after the Earth's crust cooled). My favorite scene was when a psychic came on his show to demonstrate his psychokinetic powers, such as spoon bending. Little did the guy know, Johnny was once a stage magician. Since he knew all the tricks and was able to counter them, the psychic had his ass served to him in front of millions of TV viewers. Now that was quality entertainment. I mean, it's not like I'm missing that much — probably would be a bunch of gay jokes — but I'm kinda thin on gay jokes. I burned out my stash that you all had given me in the Sullivan threads too soon. Posted by: INCITEmarsh at September 25, 2008 01:27 AM (ULsz9) 104
KC, I don't think enough people see it that way, at least not yet.
The conservative side really has to understand that the media will always be against us in this election and that includes news, the internet and entertainment. We need to start getting our point of view out clearer, louder and more frequently. Letterman is in the tank for Obama. Personally, I think McCain should go on there after the mess in Washington is sorted out and explain to him that the countries interests will always come over those of a narcissistic whining partisan like Letterman. See how he likes those apples. Posted by: DarkWolf at September 25, 2008 01:32 AM (P7VB/) 105
DarkWolf
McCain should NEVER do Letterman ever again. He should go on Jay Leno NEXT week and congratulate him for consistently having good ratings during his tenure at NBC and say he sad to see him leave next year. Posted by: trendsetter at September 25, 2008 01:37 AM (ht9A0) 106
So McCain calls Letterman and tells him he has to fly off to Washington. OK
Then in the middle of the show we see John taping an interview with Katie Couric right around the corner. Why lie? Posted by: Floridian at September 25, 2008 01:41 AM (4qVwF) 107
trend, perhaps you are right and McCain shouldn't go back on Letterman.
But to think that this guy who doesn't know the meaning of the word honour would cast doubt on McCain's motives is despicable and I would like to see him show Letterman up on his own show. We will see what happens. But I do think it's amazing how McCain keeps pulling these tactical maneuvers off from seemingly nowhere. First picking Palin, which in my opinion was a master stroke, and now empirically putting the country first ahead of his own interests? Risky, but bold and brilliant. Posted by: DarkWolf at September 25, 2008 01:42 AM (P7VB/) 108
Floridian,
Who cares! He went on a serious news program during serious times instead of joking around with a complete jerk. Can you blame him? Posted by: trendsetter at September 25, 2008 01:44 AM (ht9A0) 109
Floridian, first of all we don't know what John McCain said to Letterman, ie, when he was flying out, what he was doing, what news shows he would be attending before he leaves, etc. Secondly, Katie Couric, like it or not, hosts a news show. Letterman does not. The country's economy is in dire straits right now. McCain is prioritising. And I suspect that McCain like most people believe that getting your word out about a serious matter on a news show is more important that shooting the breeze on a talk entertainment show. Posted by: DarkWolf at September 25, 2008 01:47 AM (P7VB/) 110
Oh, OK
Posted by: Floridian at September 25, 2008 01:51 AM (4qVwF) 111
I stopped watching him when he was so rude to O'Reilly. It wasn't the rudeness that bugged me (that's what made him funny all of those years ago) so much as the fact that he kisses everyone else's ass. Somewhere along the line I think he realized that he wasn't going to get any guests to come back if he kept tearing them up. And...that's when he stopped being edgy and sarcastic and started being and hour long infomercial for celebrities. Until a conservative came along, then he had to prove his lib-cred to his Hollywood buddies. When Johnny gave the Tonight Show to Leno I thought he was nuts, since then I have realized just how wise Johnny was. Posted by: 29Victor at September 25, 2008 01:58 AM (kJVzu) 112
Really, Leno? His most popular bit is "Headlines", which he doesn't write. His jokes are preditable and his interview skills are horrible. Regardless of what political view you have, Letterman still has the true sense of interview skills and wit, like Carson and the ones before him.

Letterman was funny once upon a time, 15 or 20 years ago. Now he's just calling it in, collecting a paycheck. But let's face it- the number of people who could remain funny for over 20 years, night after night can be counted on one hand. Posted by: Hollowpoint at September 25, 2008 02:47 AM (gHv/5) 114
Seriously ditching the show at the last minute and then lying about why is a fucking stupid thing to do. Of course the host, especially when he discovers you've lied to him and gone on another broadcast is going to make you into a running joke.
I don't know what morons McCain has running his campaign but he needs to get some smart people in there. This was a dumb move. Posted by: Betty Sue at September 25, 2008 02:50 AM (VvF51) 115
Seriously ditching the show at the last minute and then lying about why is a fucking stupid thing to do. Of course the host, especially when he discovers you've lied to him and gone on another broadcast is going to make you into a running joke. He did "another broadcast" much earlier in the day; to say he lied about why he cancelled is completely unfair. When it comes to scheduling issues, fucking Letterman isn't exactly #1 on the priority list nor should it be. That said, it would've been cool if Palin took his place but again- Letterman isn't someone you're going to fuck your schedule over for. Posted by: Hollowpoint at September 25, 2008 03:05 AM (gHv/5) 116
#115 Hollowpoint.
Did you even watch the vid? I’m no fan of Letterman but I can understand why he’d be pissed about McCain canceling, saying he was going back to Washington immediately when he’s not going back until tomorrow and met instead with Couric and de Rothschild. Why lie? Why not just tell him he had reschedule due to unfolding events or that he felt it was important to do a serious news show rather than a comedy one at this juncture? Letterman and other comics are going to have a field day with this right up until the election Posted by: Betty Sue at September 25, 2008 03:21 AM (VvF51) 117
#115 Hollowpoint. Right up until Olbermann showed up. Letterman had perfectly good reason to be pissed; can't blame him for that. However there's no reason to believe that McCain lied about the reason for cancelling. It's not as if McCain is scared of Letterman. He met Couric much earlier in the day; one can hardly blame him for not doing a late night taping if he's catching a flight to DC at oh-dark-thirty am. Posted by: Hollowpoint at September 25, 2008 03:42 AM (gHv/5) 118
Betty Sue, you don't know what was said between McCain and Letterman or when it was said, so you're speculating. What we do know is that there is a big financial crisis and it may take skilled senators to solve it, so frankly, McCain realises that he has more important things to do that feed the ego of a preening pompous jackass. Posted by: DarkWolf at September 25, 2008 03:53 AM (P7VB/) 119
Ummm... Hollowpoint: It's not as if McCain is scared of Letterman. He met Couric much earlier in the day; one can hardly blame him for not doing a late night taping if he's catching a flight to DC at oh-dark-thirty am. Dude if you just continued to watch; David Letterman's show IS taped in the afternoon as well. You really think Late Night shows are taped at 11:30PM, what kinda audience and guests could you get from a show taped that late, everynight. (and don't say SNL, cuz I said: everynight) David broke his interview with LIVE broadcast of McCain talking with Couric after he called David to say he was leaving immediately for Washington. Posted by: Majk at September 25, 2008 04:41 AM (QdB4X) 120
It's probably hard for self absorbed little shits like Letterman to understand, but there's more important things in the world than his show. Apparently everyone has conveniently forgotten that Obama canceled his appearance on Saturday Night Live last week because of hurricane Ike and nobody said a word about it much less throw a hissy fit like a spoiled little brat the way Letterman did last night.
Posted by: koopy at September 25, 2008 06:58 AM (ynsah) 121
How about all the final acts over the years that got "bumped" because the show ran out of time? I'm sure they we're pretty disappointed - DAVE - that they didn't get what was promised. But we haven't seen them caterwaul - DAVE - like a spoiled teenaged brad. Posted by: bostonirish at September 25, 2008 07:15 AM (wlWjB) 122
David broke his interview with LIVE broadcast of McCain talking with Couric after he called David to say he was leaving immediately for Washington. My question is: How would a CBS show be able to get access to a live NBC interview? We only have Letterman's word about what McCain said and what/when/where the interview he showed occurred. Since he is an embittered lefty, is it possible that he might have stretched the truth a little? Posted by: Steve L. at September 25, 2008 07:39 AM (o0YD+) 123

I haven't watched Letterman since he broke a bowling ball with an 800 ton press. When was that, 1993? He had hair back then I think.

Couric's on CBS, too, man. Yeah, I'm an idiot. About 5 minutes after I posted that, it dawned on me that she went to CBS a few years back. Since I pay little to no attention to her, I blocked that fact out of my mind. Posted by: Steve L. at September 25, 2008 08:31 AM (o0YD+) 126
The McCain campaign is getting a lot more criticism than it needs by keeping Palin away from shows like Letterman and press conferences and in my opinion is silencing a powerful voice because someone in McCain’s world wants to protect her No offense, but that's crap. Neither McCain or Palin owe these buzzards a damn thing. The media hasn't shown the slightes trace of journalistic ethics or human decency as they've tried to destroy Palin, so I don't see how they deserve access to her just so they can try and ambush her. As for Letterman, he's redundant proof that most liberals are miserable, shitty people, and he wouldn't give Palin a fair chance if it would keep Indianapolis from falling into the earth. McCain has been a regular guest on his show and always been respectful, and then Letterman pulls this. Hopefully, McCain tells him to get fucked next time, and Letterman can throw another tantrum. Posted by: UGAdawg at September 25, 2008 08:50 AM (MDHAs) 127
One thing I don't think anybody's mentioned is that based on my viewing when I could still stand that cockmunch in the 80s, Letterman is the worst interviewer in the entertainment world bar none. He starts out with asking dumbass questions that display no insight whatsoever; I don't know if that's due to him being a complete dipstick or having the worst staff in the world. I guess musicians go on there for the exposure because he never knows a fucking thing they've done and ends up asking them simpleton shit like what restaurants they like. Maybe it comes from that asshole Paul Schaeffer (who's actually a good keyboard player even if he comes off like a shaved gerbil on meth) polishing his knob by laughing at his lame shit.

WELL - As I reveiw these comments, it is refreshing to see that no matter what party you support we can all come together as Americans to say that David Letterman sucks and sucks big time...! Furthermore, I agree with the consenus that there was a time back in the 80's when he was funny and maybe even relevant, but like the rest of the crowd that peaked in the 80's / early 90's - Madonna, Rick Springfield, Whoopie, Robin Williams, Ted Danson...too many to list. They just won't go quietly and they like to pretend that they are important elders with world views that matter rather than recognize they are only entertainers... or were..... and they should take the cash and shut up... !!! I do miss Bud Melman.

Personally, I it is too time-consuming for a presidential candidate OR a president to appear on a talk show. I think that venue is wrong for politics. Comedy should remain just that; politics should remain just that. And, Hollywood and television celebrities should stay OUT of it because they don't know what they are talking about. They're just a bunch of airheads!

I'm with Huge Ass... Carson was a class act. His humor, political or otherwise, was never cruel and he never sought to make his guests pay for daring to appear on his show. And, those bits he would do with the little old ladies and little old men from BFE, for whatever the reason...he was just charming. When Johnny retired, the whole crew went with him, band and all. They knew rightly then that it was all over. Posted by: jmflynny at September 25, 2008 09:36 PM (kDBSY) 140

Players are always fighting in Runescape. It’s one of the reasons the game is so popular, being able to go to another world, attack monsters, and take their treasure . It’s adventure. It’s excitement. It’s fun. Especially through outstanding account.
And one of the best parts about combat (melee combat) is that it is by far the cheapest of all three combat methods.Ranging costs buy runescape gold because it requires the use of arrows. Magic costs even more because it requires lots and lots of runes. But melee combat is relatively cheap. The only and runescape money for sale you must spend is on your weapons and armor. Once you buy those things, you don’t have to keep buying more and more stuff to keep fighting. As you gain levels in Runescape, you will be able to buy better and better equipment. The better you get, the better the weapons and armor you can use, which makes you better able to keep your buy runescape accounts leveling-up. And while we are getting the basics out of the way, let’s take a second to learn about the world of Runescape. Or rather, the worlds. Posted by: jack at June 12, 2009 02:00 AM (ERKZM) 150
