McCain Suspends Campaigning to Deal With Financial Crisis; Update: Obama Claims Idea to Suspend Was His First, But Also Says He's Not Suspending.. What?

Just announced.

Eh. Part of that Country First thing.

Update: No, McCain has announced he is suspending his campaigning, whether Obama reciprocates or not. He's returning to DC to deal with the crisis.

He wants the debate on Friday delayed.

McCain says will suspend campaign to return to Washingon Thursday to help with bailout negotiations, asks that Friday debate with Obama be postponed so bailout negotiations can continue 2:51pm EDT

Thanks to DrewM and a host of morons.

Coming in through the comments: Obama is claiming it was his idea to suspend campaigning, but also that he's not suspending campaigning.

I guess he was for the idea before he was against it.

More: McCain believes that without his advocacy -- and Obama's -- the bail-out will not pass.

WAIT WHUT

Link?  A press release or video or something?

Is he trying to do this so that he, Obambi, and Biden will all go back (or in some cases, start) to work in the Senate?  Thereby forcing the Senate to actually do something for once in the last two years?  That would be ballsy... I like it.

Protein Wisdom reports:

As I noted in an update last evening would almost certainly be the case, the media today is pushing the story that the firm owned by McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis, lobbied for Freddie and Fannie Mac — all while continuing to ignore exploring, at any length, Sen Barack Obama’s actual ties to those closely related to the current economic meltdown. Not only that, but the Davis-as-tied-to-crisis story is disputed by the McCain campaign — which alleges that the NYT has reported in bad faith, and that public records back up the campaign’s claims that Mr Davis cut ties to his firm in 2006, and that he never lobbied Freddie or Fannie Mac (and in fact, hasn’t been a registered lobbyist since 2005).

All of which, I suppose, is not surprising; after all, the media seems to think that the Sen from Illinois is running against everyone but Senator McCain, from the Gov. of Alaska to a campaign manager, and so their function has been to try to dirty them and hope that as the stories accrue, the public is left with a certain impression crafted by their reporting, while the facts that undercut this impression will ultimately only be “corrected” in the back pages of the paper, if at all.

McCain announced his decision shortly after the White House said President Bush will deliver an address to the nation Wednesday night. McCain called on Bush to convene a meeting of congressional leadership, in both chambers and parties, including him and Obama.

“It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem,” he said.

I'm hoping McCain comes out against the bailout- even if the feds do have a role in fixing something they helped break, $700 million (plus however many  tens of millions get tacked on as earmarks) is too much.  Whatever role the government played, they're not the ones who approved the subprime loans.

53 Once again, McCain changes the news cycle just a Barry was gaining some traction.  It gets McCain out in front of the bailout story, and positions him as a bipartisan and a statesman.

Even better, it's put Barry in a double bind.  If he agrees with McCain, it proves McCain is a leader and Barry is a follower.  If he disagrees, it proves that Barry is more concerned about politics than a national emergency.

This is why there's now this sad, desperate attempt to lie about it being Obambi's idea.

Posted by: DelD at September 24, 2008 03:25 PM (uAHWZ)

54 suggest the pussy campaign is lying yet again because the Mav out flanked him

“I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” McCain planned to say in New York City, according to advance excerpts released by his campaign. “I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”

However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama “intends to debate. The debate is on.”…

Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But Obama intends to debate on Friday, an official said.

60 I think this is a brilliant move. While Obama hoped to spend the better part of the next three days in "debate camp," with only limited and local (Florida) campaign events, now he must respond to McCain's challenge as to which is more important: learning how to appear presidential in a debate (staying well away from the battle lines) or acting presidential by leading from the front.

No bailout of the company until these companies are declared to be illegal racketeering syndicates.

Every employee of the company should be arrested and lodged in comfortable but secure holding pens until it shakes out who took what amount and how. Speedy triage-trials to follow. Low-level peons get out first, with mild fines, scolding, etc. Then move the remainder to county jail.

While the real trials go on, then we can talk about reorganising the companies and "bailouts".

Oh, and since Obama took their money, Obama gets arrested too.

February 6, 2006

The Honorable Barack Obama
United States Senate
SH-713
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Obama:
I would like to apologize to you for assuming that your private assurances to me regarding your desire to cooperate in our efforts to negotiate bipartisan lobbying reform legislation were sincere. When you approached me and insisted that despite your leadership’s preference to use the issue to gain a political advantage in the 2006 elections, you were personally committed to achieving a result that would reflect credit on the entire Senate and offer the country a better example of political leadership, I concluded your professed concern for the institution and the public interest was genuine and admirable. Thank you for disabusing me of such notions with your letter to me dated February 2, 2006, which explained your decision to withdraw from our bipartisan discussions. I’m embarrassed to admit that after all these years in politics I failed to interpret your previous assurances as typical rhetorical gloss routinely used in politics to make self-interested partisan posturing appear more noble. Again, sorry for the confusion, but please be assured I won’t make the same mistake again....

...As I noted, I initially believed you shared that goal. But I understand how important the opportunity to lead your party’s effort to exploit this issue must seem to a freshman Senator, and I hold no hard feelings over your earlier disingenuousness. Again, I have been around long enough to appreciate that in politics the public interest isn’t always a priority for every one of us. Good luck to you, Senator.

Sincerely,

John McCain
United States Senate

Besides, McCain has already offered his townhall a week until the election offer which Obama refused.

The American people are pissed and senate phones are ringing off the hook.   McCain suspending and going to DC is the right move. I believe that people want to see our elected officials actually doing something versus on the campaign stump blathering on about it.

Also, this will strongly affect whoever is elected in the next administration and their policies.  A good McCain comeback to his critics on this suspension "Attending to business by working on the behalf of the American people during this financial crisis is far more important to me than a political debate that can take place later.  Our future is at stake."

If Obama still wants the debate, McCain should accept. Then Johnny Mac arrives late, sleeves rolled up, no suit jacket, looking like the working guy, just getting off from a decent day’s work. The he sits down and asks the moderator; “OK, whadya got?”

The message is: I don’t need any preparation to debate the empty suit. Let’s get this done, I’ve gotta get back to work.

I think this is a representation of that philosophy. Strategy is also one of McCain's strong suits.

Obama take it in the shorts on this one.  Not a game changer, more like a three pointer that stops the other teams run.

Option A: "Hey, I thought of it fiiiiiirst"

to which the reply is, "who cares?  All that matters is ACTION, not talk"

Option B: "He's afraid to debate me"

to which the reply is, "OK, how do weekly town hall debates until the election sound?"

Option C: "I'll see you in Washington"

which is the best of the bad choices, but still makes him look like a ditherer and a follower.  It could set the stage for the most widely watched session of the Senate since impeachment.

Also, while we are on collective nouns, remember, it is a "glenn" of sock puppets.

Suspending the campaign also allows them to relax, recharge, and retool for the end of the campaign.  I know that the campaign staff will continue working, but at least they won't have to answer phones -- kind of like coming into the office on the weekend.  Not like Obama's lead is insurmountable.

Bingo-- McCain gets to stop campaigning and still make a campaign speech that corrects the record on an issue which has been causing him to lag in the race, AND point out to everyone that if they'd listened to him, they could have averted the crisis in the first place.

- The key to this is that McCain will be back on the road on Saturday at the latest.  This is not a week delay only two days, maybe three at the most.  If it goes longer than that, then you are correct.  Shorter than that, lo and behold, McCain showed up kicked butt and got a bill passed to solve a crisis.

180 Steve - But as they have shown, Dems' want to get out of town and they are scheduled to do so on Friday.  Also Reid has been begging for some reason to put this on McCain's head.  I think that coming up with a plan that he can get the Republican's to agree to will be more critical than the Dem's on this one issue.

As I said with my timeline, it is dependent on getting a deal done quickly, and I hope McCain really understands that.  In fact, I really hope Rommney has something ready to float before Bush's address tonight.

There is risk in this move, but it could be a masterstroke if he has the IOU's in congress to pull it off.  Bonus, maybe he will burn them all up(IOU's) tonight and won't have any left to push a CPS through after January.

191 There are enough takes here on the McTimeOut to fill a decent-sized platoon, and among them enough with sufficient quality to assemble a combat ready squad.

But I can't help feeling that something more compelling than an intuitive hunch, or even a counterintuitive stratagem, caused the candidate who surely realizes he absolutely must win the debate phase for the faintest chance of winning the prize to cancel the one concerning the subject of his only advantage?

[other, of course, than that oh, so attractively translucent epidermal tone]

There are a number of options, several non-exclusive:

[1] McCain more than anyone knows what a bullshit artist he's been on "foreign policy", and though he was able to intimidate the crap out of helmet hair Romney in the primary, there was always a better than even chance that Obama was going to wipe the floor with him on this subject. After all, how's he going to explain Maliki pulling the rug on his 100 year occupation? Not to mention his BFF Bush? He's just grateful the bubble didn't break on the Surge until his Republican rivals all cried uncle.

[2] He's a very, very, very, very, very, very, very old man, and he's never been a good student [to put it mildly], he's got the attention span of a gekko, he never was able to get past an exam by cramming, he's been losing in rehearsal to his sparring partner, and he's grateful as hell that his handlers at least had the decency to point out he hasn't got the chance of a polar bear beneath Palin packin' a highpowered semi-automatic with a scope on top straddling the front nose of a chopper of getting ready by Friday. Plus he tires easily, needs at least 4 naps a day, and in over the time Obama has taken two vacations he's not even taken one. He's pooped and running very close to collapse.

[3] He's scared. [Again, these options are not mutually exclusive.]

[4] He figures to put Obama off his feed bag. I actually don't think this one works, because the truth is that Obama never actually backed off from the idea of the summer town hall tour; he just wanted the number reduced so he could do his tour or Iraq and that Berlin gig and maybe catch a few waves and 18 or so holes in Hawaii. Axelrod and Plouffe have both gone public with the details of their efforts to engage Davis and Black in discussing details of 3 to 5 joint townhall appearances and those details have never been refuted. If McCain is serious in thinking he can play with Obama's head, he's far more stupid and vain than even such as I have suggested, and crazy to boot.

[5] He's crazy. This one is plausible: anger management issues, 5 and half years in a POW camp, tortured a bunch, life long party animal, won't release his medical records, pretty much only produced his dental records, a few X-rays, some reconstructive surgery records and an outdated two line one sentence summary statement on his recurrent skin cancer, even for that joke of a speed read session.

[6] A subtle but important variation on [5]: He's crazy and even he knows it.

[7] Not strong enough to stand alone, but it's possible he and his handlers have judged a risk that he could end up looking pretty damn silly going ballistic over Obamas 'persistent refusal to acknowledge the Surge is working or worked or something', which from the primary debates looks like it might be all he's got on that, when 150 million voters have at least put Iraq on the back burner while the're having conniption fits and anxiety attacks and whining and all over the Bush Bailout.

[8] Add to [7] that McCain's handlers are not so much worried over his ability to handle questions engaging the differences between commodity pledges and the various classes and stages of derivative calculations from the perspectives of buyers and sellers on the debt instrument markets, or the differences among the 57 or so different classes of mortgage interests held in the name of of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, or why we have a Fannie and a Freddie in the first place, or in the conceptual differences and handling priorities between sub prime mortgages and ordinary mortgages, as they are concerned with whether he even understands what a friggin' mortgage IS! "I spent five and half years in a place where if you got a mortgage it would been like Christmas" doesn't take one very deep into these sorts of issues.

Plus the Senator is still not sure what it was he did wrong on the Keating 5 thing [Getting him through that alone could take him the next week, ormore; nobody can tell at this stage. And you can be damn sure some pundit's gonna ask him about that in the last debate.

[9] Given Senator Obama's record this year of saying something and being proven right or prescient time and time again, once Obama gave him the outlines of what Obama was proposing they both get behind and take bipartisan credit for, it suddenly occurred to Senator McCain that the country is embroiled in a financial crisis of truly staggering importance and awesome consequences, following which he tried to relate to Schmidt and Davis and Black what Obama said, got lost, got confused, got upset and now he needs a long rest.

[10] Something's going on with his cancer, or more likely his heart, that's caused a real worry here, and whole cancel-the-debate-to-deal-with-the-economy thing is a big convenient fake out.

That last one is actually pretty high up my list of likelys. You Tools might be about to get your wish of a change at the top of the ticket. Not entirely sure it'll be Sarah though...but meaning no ill towards Senator McCain, if that's what's happening, then here's hoping the back room boys run to Sarah.

Finally, from the way the McCain Campaign has been conducted to date, we can be sure of one thing: whatever its saying the reason is, is not the reason.

Perhaps you’re right, but it looks like you’ve missed the obvious choice (and it seems to be the one McCain made):

On the floor of the Senate, with cameras rolling, stand up and remind the Senate (and the American Public, via television) about his efforts a few years ago to pass S-190 (when it likely would have averted the present crisis or at least reduced it).

Remember, we saw this sort of lending failure with Superior Bank (Q: Which billionaire supporter, fellow board-menber on many boards, and long-time Chicago friend of Barak Hussein Obama, ran the bank? How much did she make?

On the floor of the Senate, with cameras rolling, name names. Who recently left Fannie Mae (with $26million in job bonuses) while people are losing their homes? Who does he advise now?

It seems that McCain is inside the Left's OODA loop.

Also

I know the weasels posing as journalists didn't ask him Question #1 (please confirm to the American peopls whose idea you think this was, Senator Obama), but he already has admitted he lied about calling McCain about this joint appearance.

McCain has suspended his campaign, right?  Not even Jesus 2.0 has the power to make his opponent's campaign suspend operations!   It's possible that he did call McCain in the morning.  But whatever they discussed, it was not what Obama is pretending it was about.   Furthermore, the tepid attack against McCain suspending to fix this is circumstancial supporting evidence.  If Obama was ready for this, he would have trotted out something along the lines of,   "There's plenty of blame to go around, but Sen. McCain's choice to hide from you in the Senate speaks volumes about his own culpability.  It is typical and rephrehensible that the Republican moneyed interests on Wall Street would call their candidate back to fight for their special interests.   "But what about the American people?  Nobody needs to call on me to fight for them!  If Wall Street is adding Senator McCain's voice in their defense, then it is incumbent upon me to go back give voice to the millions of voiceless victims on Main Street."   It's partisan of course, but the narrative works much better than "Me, too."   Best Regards

Harry Reid has put out a statement (I'm sure with approval by the Obama campaign) saying that neither candidate should come back to Washington and that presidential politcs would not be helpful if interjected on the hill, blah, blah.

When you need dingy Harry Reid to run interference for you - you're in trouble.

Posted by: Nurse Cheri at September 24, 2008 05:33 PM (cz6lG)

223

Reid's full statement:

This is a critical time for our country. While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the Administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis.

I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Senator Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op.

If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.

Posted by: Nurse Cheri at September 24, 2008 05:37 PM (cz6lG)

224 Reid is spewing talking points, he is quoting what Obummer said in his presser. It's lame, since McCain has already suspended, including pulling down his ads. Why is Obama whining after he's gotten a bounce from this whole mess? He loves it. Tho I cannot understand how anyone could think BHO is better for the economy, there it is.

So Sen. Reid is actually leaving open the possibility that it may become time to "risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy"?

If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.

Right, by having a debate on foreign policy.  Brilliant!

227 "We need leadership; not a campaign photo op."

Um, isn't leadership what McCain is providing by showing that the good of the country comes first, and campaign photo ops are what Obama is providing by continuing his campaign?  I'm so confused - I thought Harry Reid was a Democrat.

Posted by: Alice H at September 24, 2008 05:53 PM (jRtPb)

228

And fuck Reid's patronizing.  Sen. McCain should respond:

"I serve as a member of the Senate.  I serve the people of my state, not Sen. Ried.  When and under what circumstances I choose to add my voice to an issue the Senate is debating is not determined by whether the leader of the opposition party believes my presence would be "helpful," or whether my decision to do so inconveniences my opponent's campaign schedule.  Just a day ago, Sen. Reid suggested that his support of the bailout plan was contingent upon my vote in favor of it, but now he would prefer that I stay away and not vote at all.  Well, I've got news for Sen. Reid:  I'm coming to Washington, whether it shakes things up or not."

Posted by: angler at September 24, 2008 05:55 PM (kSuu1)

229

If Reid wants to campaign for Obama by saying that he initiated this crap then I think President Bush should fall on his sword so to speak tonight:

"My fellow Americans, I take full responsibility for the situation we are in now, not for causing it but by not reacting to it. If I had taken Senator McCains advice back in 2005 on the Senate Bill that would have prevented this, we would not be in the situation we are in now. So to you Senator McCain, I want to say that I am truely sorry,"

And gp, I'm pretty stupid on economics too, but all of these loans are secured by collateral, right?  I mean except for Galveston, the land isn't going anywhere.

Even if some loans default, and even if those are less than face value at auction or foreclosure sale, some money will still be returning to Treasury, yes?  And the vast majority will continue to pay on those notes.

I hate the bailout on general principle, and I have enough ammo for an extended time of trouble, but the full-blown financial collapse still seems about a decade away to me, and we don't need to hasten it.  This is just the first death-shudder.

233 I can't help but notice that many here spell the weak candidates name wrong - It's '0bama', not 'Obama*.

234 And gp, I'm pretty stupid on economics too, but all of these loans are secured by collateral, right?

A big part of the problem is that a lot of these properties were bought at the peak of the bubble, which has now collapsed.  The value of the mortgage outstrips the current value of the property.  There's nothing but a big loss in foreclosing on the home, and no incentive to pay $350K on a house that is worth $200K, so a lot of properties get defaulted on.

Fortunately, my money's in tulips.

"all of these loans are secured by collateral, right?"  If any of this RE collateral was worth _anything_, then why in holy hell is the Fed, Treasury and Congress preparing the biggest bailout in history?  Do _you_ want to buy those houses?  Nobody does!  They're getting ready to make a Market For Crap: pay 75c/$ for stuff that they can resell for maybe 10c/$; it's like a flea market for retards.  Holman Jenkins has a serviceable idea: bulldoze several thousand houses to start to bring supply down to meet demand.

"I have enough ammo for an extended time of trouble."  I have equities, cash, and an unfullfillable promise of Social Security in 15 years.  I can live if my equities go to zero; I can live without the bogus promise of Social Security; I _cannot_ survive if my cash position is undermined by hyperinflation, which is what we're going to get if we don't say NO to this endless series of futile bailouts.   It's going to look like fucking Germany in the 1920s.

No bailout!  Let the chips fall where they may.  Then at least we'll know what real assets are truly worth, and can begin to sensibly invest again.

236 OT but I thought McCain/Palin were in troublehttp://tinyurl.com/28ztcc

237 This is a brilliant move on McCain's part in many ways. A few aspects that stand out to me:

First, it is completely consistent with his character. He puts duty first, and as a sworn representative of his State his first duty is to them in a crisis that involves Senate action.

Second, it moves the game to his home turf, where his advantage over Obama is significant.

Third, the Establishment media is pretty much compelled to cover the floor debate, in which McCain will no doubt take a leading role. He will have a chance not only to put his leadership skills on display, but he will also be able to lay out the history of this crisis, which puts fault directly in the Dems' laps.

Fourth, a bonus: he forced several errors on Obama's part: "Let us not distract Rome's burning from the important fiddle competition before us. Even though it was my idea first."

Having said this, it is a ballsy move, fraught with risk. It's easy to see how McCain could drop the ball big-time with his all-too-familiar hands-across-the-aisle crap. But somehow I don't think he will this time.

In other words, I hope that he has changed.

238 no need to respond to Ried. He's an insignificant little gray man, a speck. He's the weakest, most ineffectual, worthless Senate leader in history.

240 COUNTRY ABOVE POLITICS !!!
Both candidates are U.S. Senators. This financial crisis will be decided in the U.S. SENATE. Currently, the brilliant plan is that after this 7 hundred billion dollar bail out ... Pelosi and Reed will be in charge of picking who will be in charge of ongoing oversight for continued spending. God help us! This is another example of how Senator John McCain puts country first. All Obama cares about is winning the election at any cost. Obama neglected his duties as U.S. Senator before running for President, and especially after he began running for President. This 'bail out - quick fix" will negatively affect Americans for decades. Many of the bloggers who are criticizing McCain for this decision wouldn't recognize responsibility, or integrity if it bit them on the ass. Keep America strong and safe ... Elect McCain/Palin in November.
