Problem is, there's just enough truth in the story to make proving actual malice close to impossible in this case.  NYT v. Sullivan didn't entirely remove the defense of fair comment, just made it much harder for the news organization to use.  And you can bet the Times would lean on it pretty heavily here.

It's not her boondoggle, nevertheless the meme is out there and will stick exactly like "Bush lied, people died" sticks to this day among the majority of the people.

The MSM could really go overboard and photoshop a picture of McCain taking a briefcase full of cash from Dick Fuld. But they really aren't that stupid. That is my point. And like the paper in Citizen Kane, fabulously wealthy liberals will continue to finance the MSM as their avocation, if it can't make a profit. Hollywood continues to make box office failures that denigrate America, losing money. Are they stupid? Not really. They won't make Hate America pictures exclusively. But they make so much cash they can afford to finance their propaganda.

My sentiments exactly. Yours is easily applied advice for McCain and for Palin or any candidate who is being abused by media lies.

Press Conferences need not observe any traditions that negate the entire purpose that a conservative candidate would have by addressing the media. 

My suggestion is more radical, not likely to occur any time soon, but likely to become a practice given the difficulty to stay on message with the media actively pursuing viral lies.  Conservatives could have their own studio, cameras, technology and do all of their own editing of their own press conference. If the conservative is getting the cold shoulder from the media or media lies across the board, even a poorly attended press conference would be better than submitting to further abuse to the rabid bullies. Grant media press agents no access to conference entry if carrying any technological device. Candidates should copyright press conferences in order to retain author's integrity within the news. It's all propaganda, anyway. But the candidate has every right to his own message and his own record not being destroyed by lies. Tit for tat.

The only problem with that is that I haven't seen any evidence that the influence of the Times has fallen with it's subscribership. To wit- My understanding is that the news networks use the Times as their template. Ever wonder why the three majors will run the same stories, even on slow news days, when they are supposed to be competitors? Because they get get their cues from the Times. Local newspapers do the same thing as well as running Times stories verbatim.

In other words even if the Times subscribership drops to three, ABC, CBS and NBC will still get their marching orders there.

Sue them, call them out but don't ignore them.
