Democrats to Give Up on Offshore Drilling Ban Entirely?

So says the AP. It's unknown what comments about Zionist murderers may have been ommitted from Democratic statements.

House Democrats will allow a quarter-century ban on drilling for oil off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to expire next week.

Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey is telling reporters that language continuing the moratorium will be omitted this year from a spending bill to keep the government in operating funds after Congress recesses for the election.

That's the continuing resolution dealio they had earlier talked about adding the extention to.

Once more for the sake of tradition: This is the first action... of our new administration... and the action is called... Drilling....

Thanks to TomM.

Holding onto conservative districts trumps liberal principle yet again.  There are advantages to a Democratic House.

9 What complete pussies the Dems in Congress happen to be.

Ballless, gutless, easily rolled patsies.

Ds "We'll shut down the govm't, nyah nyah."

Rs "OK, do it."

Ds "Just kidding!"

I love that they could demoralize their base even further.  Maybe the R's could win some seats this year.

Wow.  In all my years I've never seen such pathetic legislators.  Much as I despised him, Tip O'Neill would have gotten it done.

Your link doesn't work. Plus it is dated around the time Obama named Biden (8/22). Try spreading rumors elsewhere.

17 Looks like new refineries are almost impossible to get approved, but Marathon is expanding one in Louisiana by about 7million gallons / day.  If that is a way to get around the de facto ban on new refineries, then let's do it.  The government also needs to look at strategic reserves of gasoline and diesel, not just crude.

18 Jeez, it's like Whack-A-Mole with these people.   I'll believe David Obey when the C.R. is actually passed without the no drilling language.

Posted by: Laura at September 23, 2008 07:24 PM (8qMVk)

19 Coach Mora -- good point,  tho just think how fucked up things would be if they actually did what they campaigned on.  If they could just pass a 50 year continuing resolution then this country would truly have some Hope.  As is, they'll be back in January to continue fixing all of our problems fucking things up.

Bush: Not dead yet. Democrats had clung to the hope of only a partial repeal of the drilling moratorium, but the White House had promised a veto, Obey said.

Posted by: Neo at September 23, 2008 07:32 PM (Yozw9)

21 Great news.  This won't get drilling going right away, but it's one more step in the right direction.

Posted by: brak at September 23, 2008 07:32 PM (lI//z)

22 This is a scam.  They'll take out the moratorium language, but slip in a clause that says that we can't drill for oil anywhere, ever.  They'll still brag about how they lifted the moratorium on drilling.

What else will be in this bill, by prediction, is a huge chunk of tax credits and government investment into "alternative" energy.  I suspect, with great compunction, that there has been a deal made to insure that Big Oil gets their and so does Big Energy.

If Obama wins, I expect next year to immediately see tax legislature that puts a bite on oil and gives it to the Big E's.

mcCain probably won't put a big bite on oil, but I suspect he will equally be happy to give away a ton of our money to private "alternate energy" enterprises.

While I am for developing our resources and looking at alternatives, I have to say that this election stinks of lobbyists from both camps and we are stuck holding the bill.

I'll believe it when turkey-neck Pelosi is no longer in Congress.

Eventually, and sooner rather than later, her and Reid will cuddle up together over a quart of double-douche chocolate ice cream, and hatch a new plan.  They always do.

Drill offshore? Why? There's no fucking oil to be found off-shore, the dems said so. Nancy said so. It must be true. She wouldn't lie, would she? Besides, the oil companies own off-shore leases they aren't drilling on right now. Of course, the geo surveys show there is no oil under those leases, but Nancy says they should drill anyway. Cause see, drilling a dry hole helps the children!

26 I think the Dems know that maintaining the ban will likely cost them way more than it is worth.

They'll just change tactics and switch to other battles. The ban never meant anything more to them than a way to get enviro-nut money and idiot votes.

They do not give a fried shit about the environment.

and money from companies like ComEd/Exelon who are interested in getting sweet government money and tax breaks to offset their expenditures for building wind farms,hydro-electric plants and other "alternative" energy.

Everybody in this campaign has some money from this group, but certain someone's have more.

This is huge if true. But I just can't help feeling that the Dems have some trick up their sleeves.

Even if the federal ban is lifted there needs to be legislation that clears away the avalanche of lawsuits guaranteed to be put forth every time a company wants to sink a new hole.

Maybe that's why the Dems are letting this one go. Too expensive politically, but they know their enviromarxist allies will carry the ball.

30 They haven't given up anything.

They merely don't want to pay a price for their unpopular views and would rather fool the public about those views. Democrats simply hope to ban it again after the election. It's dishonest, cowardly, unprincipled and sneaky.

In other words, it has all the hallmarks of Nancy Pelosi's National Disgrace Congress of 2008.

Posted by: Noel at September 23, 2008 10:54 PM (4gHqM)

31 There is a five year backlog for drill rig booking.  If an oil company leased a rig today, it would be 5 years before it could START to move to the drill site.  The Democrats are betting they can pass another ban before anyone can actually start to drill.

Posted by: crosspatch at September 23, 2008 11:27 PM (LEGpH)

32 Gotta agree with you Noel.  They have bigger fish to fry.  They're too busy trying to wriggle out of any culpability in the financial meltdown and concentrating on saddling the Republicans with the mess.  Then they'll end up picking up plenty of seats come November.  Then they can do whatever the hell they want come January.
