Steve Schmidt vs. the New York Timesblog

Calling out America's most prominent nutroots blog-on-paper:

1 Text of clip:

Let me first say we are First Amendment absolutists on this campaign.  The press and anybody who wishes to cover this race from a blogosphere perspective or from a media perspective is of course constitutionally protected with regard to writing whatever they want to write.

But let's be clear and be honest with each other about something fundamental to this race, which is this: Whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by an standard a journalistic organization.  It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Sen. McCain, attacks Gov. Palin, and excuses Sen. Obama.  There is no level of public vetting with regard to Sen. Obama's record, his background, his past statements.  There is no level of outrage directed at his deceitful ads. This is an organization that is completely, totally, 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate, which is their prerogative to be, but let's not be dishonest and call it something other than what it is.  Everything that is read in the New York Times that attacks this campaign should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective, that it is an organization that has made a decision to cast aside its journalistic integrity and tradition to advocate for the defeat of one candidate, in this case John McCain, and advocate for the election of the other candidate, Barack Obama.

2 If they aren't acting as journalists, then this is an in-kind contribution, yes? Feingold and some arse on our side wrote some insane bill covering this sort of thing.

4 Finally!!!  Its time to stop talking in political double-speak bullshit and tell it like it is.  People know when they are being patronized.  If its really the "straight talk express" we need to hear more of this.  And more of it from the candidates, too.

Don't forget, this is the same paper that gave a huge discount to MoveOn.org for their General Betray-us ad.

I'm going to dance a jig the day the NYT folds and shutters its doors.

I'm surprised the astroturf story has gotten press attention this fast.  Grats to Rusty and Ace.

You mean the accusation that Palin belonged to Alaskan Independence Party, or that McCain was probably having an affair with a female lobbyist? Both of which were published in the Times? Both of which were easily proven false?

It is those false accusations, among others, that discredit the Times, nothing that McCain or Schmidt says.

But if you want to talk pathetic...

Posted by: JBean at September 22, 2008 02:55 PM (AcHeK)

10 Yeah, don't forget the front-page Palin hitpiece that said she hired a high-school buddy for a state agriculture job because she "liked cows". Even Clark Hoyt, the half-assed "ombudsman" criticized that one, though his criticism seems to be that the reporters could have dug deeper and come up with more so-called evidence.

Hit them and keep hitting. Boycott their asses. It's not like they can do anything worse than they have already.

13 The NYT up until the late 1960's used the term "Reds" in its headlines when refering to the Soviets.

Nowadays the NYT is what victorious Soviets would have made it.

It is an enemy of our Republic.

14

Al-yeah, but remember that the media was very much in favor of Whatshisface-Feingold.  That's because they knew that they would never be held accountable for their partisanship.

Seriously, ??????-Feingold was such an insult to the Constitution that it took a lot for me to get behind its author, but luckily he was running against a complete nightmare.

Posted by: CavMedic at September 22, 2008 03:09 PM (tc3dx)

15 So, instead of refuting the claims, just discredit the source?

Why not do both?

Palooka, as a committed conservative Christian and long-time AOSHQ moron, I'm sure you're aware that seemlingly every third post on this blog (and many other conservative blogs) pertains to the inaccuracy of the latest smear from the Soros/Kos/Axelrod/Obama/MSM axis of evil.

As a long-time Democrat and NYT subscriber, the repeated pattern of smears of the McCain/Palin campaign leaves me deeply concerned.

Posted by: pbrown at September 22, 2008 03:49 PM (vxGjP)

16 Schmidt needs to back up this excellent rant with action. Something like this:

When McCain holds a press conference, all passes issued to the NY Times reporters should have "NY TIMES OBAMA ADVOCATE" in big bold letters that everyone can read. If they refuse, then they don't get in.

Posted by: OregonMuse at September 22, 2008 03:53 PM (FO+YO)

17 Awesome, he gets it. If you're a Republican, you have to go after the media the way you'd go after the spokesman for your opponent, because that's what they are.  And you cannot rely on the traditional media to get your message out. Those basic facts of life have never sunk in with the Bush administration.

Posted by: Bud Norton at September 22, 2008 04:16 PM (6cOMd)

18 So, instead of refuting the claims, just discredit the source?

Doesn't make the accusations false.  Just makes the man look pretty pathetic.

Yeah, we're sure you're saying the same thing about the Obama campaign clearly doing that on several occasions.

As the saying goes, Palooka, Expelliarmus.

20 So yes, the NYT is a partisan publication.  An argument could be made that that advertising in the NYT (and PRESSSSident in general) should be considered non-deductible political contributions, particularly if reporters and editors get their marching orders from the DNC or other Democrats.

However one must be careful here.  Some might consider Rush's show to be a partisan talk show, even if he attacks McCain and RINOs with frequency and doesn't get any marching orders from the GOP.

If Rush gets tax deductible advertising for expressing his partisan views, the same would seem to have to apply to the NYT and PRESSSSSSident.

22 7/ Paloostroturf: "So, instead of refuting the claims, just discredit the source?"

How about, having ALREADY refuted the claims, go on to discredit the source.

"Doesn't make the accusations false.  "

The accusations are already known to be false.

"Just makes the man look pretty pathetic."

Not knowing when you're busted, and how completely you're busted, is what makes you look so pathetic, Moby.

What the hell are you talking about?  Rush, the NYTs, and your local paper are all businesses.  Tax deductable adveritsing?  Huh? The difference is that Rush does not pretend to be a non-partisan objective news reporter.

To make it even more clear: A newpaper's editorial and commentary section can be completely In. The. Tank. We all understand that, and I doubt many of us disapprove.  It is when their "straight" news stories are clearly little more than an endless series of poorly-sourced hit pieces that we get all lathered up.

"We are here because an ethic of irresponsibility has swept through our government, leaving politicians with the belief they can waste billions and billions of your money on no-bid contracts for friends and contributors, slip pork projects into bills during the dead of night and spend billions on corporate tax breaks we can't afford and old programs we don't need," said Obama.

Anybody handy with YouTube?  Cuz this quote from today would make a great "Barry, you're full of shit you fucking hypocrite" type viral video.

Yes my wife's hospital got a $1M earmark from me. And Yes my wife got a $200k per year raise not long after.

28 I don't see any reason to go after the NYT. Firstly, I think the NYT and WaPo are only preaching to a rapidly dwindling choir. I'd bet they are leaking money like a sieve; their irrelevance grows with each passing day.
Secondly, if people *were* paying attention to such outlets, Obama would be up by 20 points by now.

Let 'em die.

29 This is all well and good--but I'm starting to get impatient with all the polite pussyfooting around. Obama is not just some extremely liberal Democrat, just some guy who's a little further left on the spectrum from a John Kerry or an Al Gore. We are dealing with a difference in kind, not just degree. Why isn't anyone shouting it from the rooftops? Obama's a fucking COMMUNIST!
