Bit of Background for the Coming Story...

1) David Axelrod's client list is top secret. Partly that is to disguise the fact that when he's not running the political campaigns of left-wing politicians, he's conducting dishonest astroturf campaigns on behalf of large deep-pocketed corporations considered "villains" to the left, such as utility companies seeking rate hikes or AT&T. But that secret list of clients -- and associations -- also comes in handy for disguising his political astroturfing, too. The media, of course, has shown no interest in investigating this.

For example: Are Fannie and Freddie among Axelrod's secret clients? We don't know, Axelrod won't say, and no one in the media has even asked him. (Well, that's not quite true -- Business Week did and was told to piss up a rope.)

2) In 1984, Republican Senator Charles Percy faced off against Democratic challenger Paul Simon in Illinois, David Axelrod heading up Simon's campaign. Simon prevailed, edging Percy 88,000 votes, despite the Reagan landslide which brought in a lot of marginal Republicans.

The difference in the race seemed to be a huge (in 1984 terms) $1.2 million "independent" ad campaign against Percy funded by Michael Goland, a California Democrat businessman. (Simon’s campaign spent less than $7 milion, so $1.2 million of "independent" ads coming from an out of state Democrat was no small matter.)

Percy later filed suit with the FEC, alleging that Goland illegally coordinated with Simon and Axelrod. Goland was fined for $5000. However, he was later convicted for a similar "independent" ad campaign on behalf of Senator Alan Cranston (D-California). He was sentenced to 90 days in federal prison.

Bear these facts in mind about Axelrod tactics when the left begins spinning, "But this was an independent ad we had nothing at all to do with!"

Oh: And remember this guy who famously created an ad completely without the knowledge of the Obama campaign? Yeah, he used to share a house with Obama's campaign spokesman.

A lot of people associated with Obama and Axelrod just sort of... do things for them, unbidden.

Actually... that 1984 ad was really the big start of Obama's viral marketing/astroturfing campaign, wasn't it?

You need to replace the second Percy with Simon.

I remember the 1984 campaign. There were billboards with a Camaleon that was supposed to be Percy. I forget what the issue was but the point was that shit was being thrown at Percy while Simon had clean hands. In the closing days of the campaign Percy ran an ad saying "I got the message." Axelrod worked on the Simon campaign.

In 1992 a guy named Al Holfeld ran in the dem primary against Alan Dixon and Braun. He ran negative ads against Dixon only and Braun won. Braun's hands were clean.

In 2004 The Chicago Tribune got Republican challenger' Jack Ryan's divorce records unsealed. The same Tribune did NOT request John Kerry's sealed divorce records. BTW Axelrod used to be a reporter at the Chicago Tribune. The embarrasing disclosure from the divorce records caused Ryan to drop out of the race. Republican leaders decided bring in Maryland resident Alan Keyes was a brilliant idea and Obama subsequently won the general election with over 60% of the vote.

DO WE SEE A PATTERN HERE?

I'm sure you all noticed that the obvious astroturfing on this blog site and a few other comment sections has really seemed to slack off in the past few days once the posters were exposed and mercilessly mocked.  I do hope a bunch of useful IP addresses were captured before that. Axelrod will be rich whether Obama wins or loses the election.

I attended, people were there from all over Cen. Fla, was crazy….the organizers underplanned so logigistics sucked, we ended up walking 3 miles from parking to the event…even had to climb a fence with barbed wire…and one had to be constantly on the lookout for golfcarts whizzing crazily by…saw peolple walking along waving $20 at the carts hoping to be picked up…

Was hot as hell, surprised we didn’t see more people overcome by the heat…more than a few grumpy people…the line to get into the secured area where tickets were needed was too long to endure..

All that said, it was AWESOME, history in the making, young and old there, a huge party once you got to where she was speaking…lots of energy, well worth all the hassle! She is the future of our party.

I wonder just how many people at Fannie Mae lost money on the stock.

An SEC investigation seems in order, as I suspect that few executives lost anything. This smells much like Enron.

As for tracking down Axelrod's clients, his competitors (I wonder if Jack Ryan can name a few) are likely to know them, and one or two of them might talk.

But the days of only the big boys being able to produce commercials are long gone.  It's simple enough to create something for YouTube or LiveLeak, with the chance that the better ones will be picked up for national broadcast.

This approach changes the job of political operatives with money from having to gather material and create ads to simply selecting the ones they like, contactng the producers to make arrangements, then paying for national and regional TV and cable ad time.

39 What's sad is that the generation y kids have been pwnd by Obama/Axelrod/Ayers/etc...

Nah, most kids tend to be liberal when you're younger. I know I was. Some get engaged, start thinking, become more conservative or at least less liberal, and others go in the opposite direction.

It tends to be close. Reagan had some very bad candidates to run against, and Reagan rocked. But most elections will be close. Hopefully not 2000 close, but close.

But there are always new conservatives, even young conservatives. Certainly, youth tends to vote for liberals, but even then . . . 4 or 8 years of Obama would have a lot of kids who voted for Obama voting for President Palin in 2012 or 2016.

But there are always going to liberal moonbats, and crazy people who claim to be right-wingers but usually aren't even close. And we'll never reach them, but no matter what the Obama's say, those folks they are recruiting . . . well, about half of them will feel different about the Commucrats after a year or two of watching all their paychecks disappear into the federal maw, and finding the principals of liberal thought that so inspire them are trampled on mercilessly by left politicians in the pursuit of power. Lots of them are too young to have seen it yet. But they will. Oh, they will.

Hundreds, maybe thousands.  Fannie Mae had a very generous stock program for employees just like Enron did, and many of the longtime middle managers and recent retirees were paper millionaires.  The stock traded betweeen $50-75 for several years.  A lot of people thought it would go up when the subprime market froze up because Fan and Fred were the only funding sources for anything, so they bought even more stock.  I was told that AIG owned a ton of it.  Lots and lots of pension fiunds and 401(k)s owned it too.

I have a very close friend who worked for Fannie for 15 years and lost $460,000 - pretty much her entire retirement fund.  Nobody ever thought that company would end up broke.

49 Frankly, I think it's at least half-way important to downplay the significance of this future story.

Beyond that goal-post setting, I also think it's important for all independents to realize that, while watching the Muppets, they were actually cheering for Henson, and not the inanimate objects with fists up their asses.

So, if Henson/Axelrod is what we all know he is?  Well, his puppet/You-can-see-the-strings-Jesus is infinitely sadder and more shallow than even that very low mark.

51 rockmom, if Obama wants to give Ace money, I think that's wondeful!

I run adblock, so I never see that stuff, but what a hilarious thought.

And as for those of you who are upset that Obama is picking up in the polls: read the polls more carefully.  Obama has lost ground in nearly all constituencies.  He's gaining in the overall because the pollsters are rebalancing the polls according to their view of how many voters are democrat or republican.  Obama is still losing ground, and if these polls had been formulated the same way a few weeks ago, Mccain wouldn't have been in the lead at all.

Mccain is gaining steadily, and just because some poll says Obama is regaining momentum doesn't mean it's true.

53 Blah. This is not the story I've heard bubbling up recently, but it's about on a par with it. As in, very commendable and cool that original reporting is being done by conservative blogs. Everything has to start somewhere and it's good if independent people do the work the MSM refuses to do.

However, I have to differ with your evaluation of this story as a "mid-level" important story. Outside of a dozen righty blogs who will link to it for one day. Still, I guess every drop in the bucket adds up eventually. Good work Rusty.

Ace said this wasn't superbig, kind of a meh.

When the concern trolls got big, the question was out on lots of blogs - hey, this looks a lot like astroturfing, and hey, isn't that Axelrod guy practically the inventor of astroturfing?

Sounds like Rusty and them started digging and hit something, maybe even smoking gun good, but even if it is unassailable proof, its is just that there is some astroturfing behind the Obama campaign.  Which we all sort of suspected here for a while now.

Press isn't going to care about this at all because they are grazing on all the synthetic grass they can get.  But you know what they love?  A simple story about lying.  (well, that and some photogenic chick disappearing)  So having astroturfing as a secret is not exactly a lie, it is clever campaign maneuvering or some horsehockey like that.  But get them into a "perjury trap" for lack of a better word.  Get someone to ask and get a denial on videotape, and then expose it.

That would be how to play it.  But now they know the gig is up on this, and they'll shred the payments and move onto the next trickery.

60 The problem with "their own medicine" is that Republicans would be displeased if a Republican politician were so slimy and dishonest. On the other hand, Democrats are disappointed if a Republican politician is slimy and dishonest.

No, that wasn't a typo.

For Democrat pols, there isn't a downside to slime - their base has a good giggle, and the MSM is part of their base.

The Republicans not only have to remain scrupulous (or as near as they can get), they have to overcome the MSM to get the word out about Dem perfidy even to their own base - the only people who care.

To re-iterate, the Republicans have to fight to get past the Gatekeepers just to get the votes of their own base.

Sucks, don't it?

71 docweasel, what was unconvincing about it?

Just curious.  It wasn't an opinion, it was a fact.  Obama has lost ground with every single demographic except the single point he gained on the extreme left.  he lost ground with the conservative dems, the independents, and all of the republicans.  There is no way around the fact that Obama has not turned the ship around... either he was ahead of Mccain the whole time (the voters were balanced wrong then) or he isn't ahead of him now (the voters are balanced wrong now).

I mean, if you're just saying all polls are crap, well, you're right.  And you're also right that the Bradley effect makes my thoughts and everyone else's thoughts not worth much... no one really knows what's going to happen.  But still, the recent uptick in Obama's polls are not actually based on any data... Mccain is still gaining, but the pollsters think there are more democrats than they thought last week.

Well, maybe not.  Maybe Saint Peter is concerned about reaching the conservative pussy limit upstairs.  Something to consider.

73 In the meantime...

A Grand Jury in Chattanooga could reportedly hear testimony this week into the alleged hacking of the personal e-mail of Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

The Knoxville News-Sentinel said the FBI is investigating the possibility that a University of Tennessee student who is the son of a state legislator from Memphis carried out the hacking.

The report said FBI agents raided the apartment of David Kernell early Sunday morning.

It said friends of Kernell were interviewed, and said they are due to testify about the case in Chattanooga this week.

A federal grand jury is set to convene in Chattanooga on Tuesday.

Kernell is the son of Memphis Democrat Mike Kernell, who acknowledged that his son is being investigated.

74 Crap.  somebody help me out here.  I just caught a story about Biden's speeches around the country and I think he's still plagiarizing.  He said his grandpa said it, but I swear this is some comedians act.

Often, he notes that he understands the personal toll of job loss and economic hardship by quoting one of his grandfather’s sayings: When a guy in the nearby town loses his job, “it’s an economic slowdown. When your brother-in-law loses his job, it’s a recession. When you lose your job, it’s a depression.”

77 "By now Harry Truman is generally considered the author of this familiar saying. He has also been credited with such quips as "I don't care what they say about me as long as they spell my name right," and "It's a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it's a depression when you lose your own." Both are old saws that were hardly original to Truman if he ever said them at all. But because they "sound like" him, and he is well known to us, Truman's name has routinely been attached to words that weren't his. This is a common fate of public figures"

from: http://www.ralphkeyes.com/pages/books/niceguys/excerpt.htm

So, Biden's Grandpa got it from Truman, who never said it? lol

Still, its not original.

Ronald Reagan used that gag in 1980.  The final line went: "And when Jimmy Carter loses his job, it's a recovery."  No way Biden heard that from his grandfather.  What an idiot.

115 Hope, Change, & Lies: Orchestrated "Grassroots" Smear Campaigns & the People that Run Them

Extensive research was conducted by the Jawa Report to determine the source of smears directed toward Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Those smears included false allegations that she belonged to a secessionist political party and that she has radical anti-American views.

Our research suggests that a subdivision of one of the largest public relations firms in the world most likely started and promulgated rumors about Sarah Palin that were known to be false. These rumors were spread in a surreptitious manner to avoid exposure.

It is also likely that the PR firm was paid by outside sources to run the smear campaign. While not conclusive, evidence suggests a link to the Barack Obama campaign. Namely:

Evidence suggests that a YouTube video with false claims about Palin was uploaded and promoted by members of a professional PR firm. The family that runs the PR firm has extensive ties to the Democratic Party, the netroots, and are staunch Obama supporters. Evidence suggests that the firm engaged in a concerted effort to distribute the video in such a way that it would appear to have gone viral on its own. Yet this effort took place on company time. Evidence suggests that these distribution efforts included actions by at least one employee of the firm who is unconnected with the family running the company. The voice-over artist used in this supposedly amateur video is a professional. This same voice-over artist has worked extensively with David Axelrod's firm, which has a history of engaging in phony grassroots efforts, otherwise known as "astroturfing." David Axelrod is Barack Obama's chief media strategist. The same voice-over artist has worked directly for the Barack Obama campaign.

This suggests that false rumors and outright lies about Sarah Palin and John McCain being spread on the internet are being orchestrated by political partisans and are not an organic grassroots phenomenon by the left wing fringe. Our findings follow.

Legitimately and seriously, I do believe that was precisely their initial aim.  That was how things successfully worked for them in Chicago and they thought they could repeat it on the national stage.

Posted by: RedFox84 at September 22, 2008 12:53 AM (vs8h/)

121 You really ARE a bunch of morons!!!!

Obama ads -- click them EVERYWHERE you see them! Internet ads don't pay unless they are clicked, simply displaying them does nothing.

No blogger will tell you to click those ads on their site because their term-of-service agreements say they won't do that.

When you see an Obama add on a page, CLICK IT! Yes, it costs his campaign money and some of that goes to the site hosting the ad.

A few days ago on Fox they had a brief bit about the Obama campaign paying for certain search terms so that they'd go to the official site and people could see the official answer. They PAY FOR THAT!

So google "barack obama religion" then click on the sponsored link to find out the campaign's version of the story. Yes, it costs them money. DO it often.

Morons. Fuckin' morons.....

See, that's what's been bugging me. It's abated some now, but that first 7-10 days, it was just a torrent of this nonsense. Way too much to be spontaneous, especially considering most people had never heard of her before. Suddenly there are self-described experts in the comments of every single blog I visit? Hell, Fark had so many submissions of that idiotic "Palin's not the real mother" post from the Daily Kos, even they started getting irritated.

But yeah, it worked in Chicago, so they figured it'd work nationally. Except they forgot they've got a lot more pairs of eyes looking at them now.

127 re: Shill
So you are agreeing with the Whizbag's theory that _every single poll_, Gallup, Ras, Quinni, CBS, Zog, Dielo or w/e, they are all going up Obama by the same amount, 3-6pts, but they are all doing it just because the numbers are going in the OPPOSITE direction, but they are all changing their weighting to make it appear that Obama is in the lead? And I guess they will keep weighting Dems as much as it takes to keep Obama in the lead, at least on paper?

Sorry, I just dont' buy it. These guys _do_ have reputations to uphold and clients who expect accurate results. Sure, some of them are shilling for the Dems, but I refuse to believe that every single independent poll is purposely falsifying the results to keep Obama in the lead. So they can all look like idiots on election day? They do plan on staying in business after Nov 4 I would think. They do want to attract clients and a monster data point to brag about is who comes closest to the final result.

It just doesn't make sense. McCain may very well be ahead, who the heck really knows, but the Whiz-dude's logic saying he's actually gaining when he's going backwards in every single poll I've seen in the last week is bullshit, sorry. I think he's misreading the tabs.

Posted by: docweasel at September 22, 2008 03:21 AM (XmjZg)

128 doc, I see where you'd get the impression that was my view, but it's a bit off.

I do not think there is a great conspiracy among the pollsters to favor the democrat... i think there is a lot of pressure to make the polls newsworthy and changing, but not enough to betray accuracy.

Here's the simple fact: Mccain gained in these polls.

OK?

He has more voters supporting him than he did a week ago.  It's that simple.  If you read the poll, you see that each category other then the far left (which didn't move much) went more for Mccain than it was a week prior.  The pollsters have reweighted the groups.  That's how basic polling works and isn't a scandal.  It's just part of the art, and I think shows that we should look at the details and not worry as much about the general message.

There's no reason not to believe that the big pollsters are copying eachother in reweighing.  They do not get these balances right.  Regardless, if you believe these polls you believe that Mccain isn't losing votes.  The data is trying to tell you that Mccain was never ahead but is still gaining (I don't know if this is true or not).
