| Fearmonger in Florida: Obama Lies About Social SecurityLemme tell you the one about the lawyer who lies. What? You've heard it? Obama is in big trouble in Florida. Over the summer he spent $8 million on advertising there. McCain spent nothing, but always managed to stay on top in the polls. Democrats are talking about turning out new voters and rarely-voters. That sounds good and feeds the Obama Change motif. The problem is that these voters are not reliable, something Democrats learned in 2002 when they made a nation-wide push to defeat Jeb Bush. People are more than happy to tell a chirpy phone-bank volunteer that they are fired up. But no one knows how many actual votes that will be on Election Day. So a change in tactics is in order. Last week Obama claimed that McCain is running a dishonest, dishonorable campaign built on "lies and spin." This weekend, Obama embraced that strategy. He decided the best way to grab votes is to scare the bejeebus out of grandma.A new Obama ad characterizes the "Bush-McCain privatization plan" as "cutting Social Security Benefits in half." This is a falsehood sure to frighten seniors who rely on their Social Security checks. In truth, McCain does not propose to cut those checks at all. This is the same argument that derailed the President's social security reform plan. No matter how many times it was pointed out that this is a blatant, provable lie, Democrats would tell seniors that Republicans were trying to slash their benefits. Grandma and grandpa would freak out and once their paranoiac buttons have been pushed you can never quite erase their suspicion that someone is trying to take something from them. The ad is airing in Florida, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. Obama is also scaring seniors on the campaign trail, lying to them about privatization. In Daytona Beach, Obama said that "if my opponent had his way, the millions of Floridians who rely on it would've had their Social Security tied up in the stock market this week." He referred to "elderly women" at risk of poverty, and said families would be scrambling to support "grandmothers and grandfathers." That's not true. The plan proposed by President Bush and supported by McCain in 2005 would not have allowed anyone born before 1950 to invest any part of their Social Security taxes in private accounts. All current retirees would be covered by the same benefits they are now.And for those who are young enough to participate, privatization as proposed by the President would be a voluntary. That last quoted sentence is the most important one. All current retirees will be covered by the same benefits they are now. Unless Republicans hammer this point in the same breath in which they mention Social Security, Obama and the Democrats will continue to lie about it...and get away with their lies. It's also worth mentioning (again) that long-term investments in the stock market do better than "investment" in Social Security. As Drudge had it yesterday, "DOW UP 40 POINTS IN PAST MONTH - UP 18% PAST 5 YEARS - UP 44% PAST 10 YEARS." Properly diversified investments are not nearly the gamble Obama makes them out to be. This is a pretty good sign that it's the Obama camp that's scared shitless.
Of course, McCain's been a coward on Social Security all along (as was every non-Fred), so he shouldn't have a problem deflecting this. Posted by: someone at September 21, 2008 12:31 PM (2z2WN) 3

You know, McCain just had a horrible week, the economy looked for a moment to go 1929 on us, Bush has popularity somewhere just above the 30ish percentile, and yet... according to both Hotline and Rasmussen, McCain is within a point?? And knowing how Barry underpolled during the primary season? I am, to be honest, not feel bad about it. It could be better of course, and I'd rather be ten points ahead instead of one down, but still, not bad at all. Posted by: Lee at September 21, 2008 12:53 PM (TxTIh) 8
Fact Check is nice but granny doesn't read factcheck. We have to get the word out personally, with old fashioned letters and word of mouth. Stuff older people use to communicate, barber shop chat, talk around the shuffleboard table and bingo parlor. We can't let this crap stand, again, like we always do.
Oh, and Obama doesn't lie very well at all, he just does it often. If he didn't have legions of people covering for him and repeating the lies, they wouldn't be believed by anyone. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at September 21, 2008 12:53 PM (0+Ggj) 9

Correct, the Messiah is being untruthful here, perhaps willingly, but there's an even stronger response to the argument that Social Security funds are better held in the Social Security Trust Fund than in private hands:
THERE IS NO SOCIAL SECURITY TRUST FUND, DUMBASSES!! The "Trust Fund" is just an accounting gimmick, premised on the idea that a Congress 25, 30, or 45 years from now will vote to cut you a check. With whom do you think your money is safer: some Wall Street asshole who's trying to maximize the return on your money so that he can buy a bigger yacht, or Barney Frank? Jackass McCain better not drop this gift as well like he's done with this financial-mess issue. Just like Obama's desire to pocket $105k from Fannie and Freddie, hire disgraced and nearly-prosectued Fannie CEOs and CFOs for his chief financial advisor roles AND THEN REJECT CALLS FOR REFORM OF FANNIE AND FREDDIE - so too is he showing here that he is no agent of change when it is broken, liberal institutions.
And this should be another notch in McCain belt of calling Obama out as a status quo liberal who only wants to protect or enlarge broken, sticky-finger-government, liberal institutions. But McCain needs to start making this call yesterday. And it should work. Most Americans believe that SS needs to be fixed even if they dont agree on the exact same course. And here is Obama spreading lies so that he can shoot down any kind of real reform of what eveyone agrees needs reform. That's more of the same. Thats status quo. And he keeps demonstrating it. And you can even throw in Obama's rejection of the change in mission in iraq, ie, the Iraqi surge. THERE IS A CONTINUOUS THREAD HERE THAT McCAIN ISN'T DRAWING! Obama. Change* For Status Quo Liberal Stuff. *Fine print: Change is defined as "protecting, growing or building government monopolies" Posted by: Big Guv at September 21, 2008 01:29 PM (zqkmX) 27

JP, McCain isn't running any ads in NC because the idea that it's a battleground state is completely ridiculous.
Note, too, that the McCain campaign hasn't actually done Florida ad buys yet. Any ads us Floridian morons are seeing are national buys. Obama's spent a mountain of money here while McCain and the RNC still haven't done a thing and are still ahead. Once they do, Florida'll go GOP by at least 5%. #50 exactly right. I've been telling people for weeks, do NOT look at the polls, watch what the campaigns are doing. Obama has been running like he is behind for a month now. McCain got thrown off his game a bit last week but now he is right back on offense. My husband has been a big Obama supporter, but I keep gently putting things in front of him like the Palin smear campaign (he likes her), the wilding of the radio station in Chicago, the gaffeathon that is Joe Biden, and now I watch the TV ads with him and point out the lies. We happen to know Rick Davis and Charlie Black personally, and that ad of Obama's about the lobbyists really pissed him off. He may just go over the edge if we see this gross Social Security ad here. He has worked on a lot of Dem campaigns and he is getting more and more annoyed with Obama's. Posted by: rockmom at September 21, 2008 02:36 PM (iZqUY) 54
One thing to remember about the Obama campaign: They never expected to win the nomination, and the assembled group was never put together for that purpose. Obama thought he'd score some points in the early primaries, start the process of puffing up his popularity and his resume, then get out and work toward the "real" run in 2012 or 2016.
But then things got weird over there in Ratland, and one day the fucker woke up and realized he somehow hit the Trifecta in the Donk Preakness of Stupid, barely winning by a nose against Hillary. And ever since, Barack's had two big problems: 1) His campaign staff is made up of arrogant, elitist pricks whose only purpose were to make him a Barackstar inside the already-trending-elitist Democratic Party establishment. They accomplished that, far too well. Now he's left with a campaign staff full of arrogant, elitist pricks that don't know shit about running an actual general election campaign where you have to appeal not just to everyone in your own party that you just spent months intentionally freezing out, but people on the other side as well. And they only know one play: Barack's a Rock Star. 2) Since he only intended to puff up his own PR, Barack didn't NEED any real answers, or to even know that much of anything on most issues. He'd have another four or eight years to work on that in the Senate. But now he's found himself 4-8 years ahead of his own game plan. Result? "Uh, I, well, uh..." followed by plaintive wails to visit his web site for specifics (which have been drawn up by others without much input from Obama himself). Meanwhile, over here, we've got a candidate that's been living and breathing this issues shit for decades, and a campaign that was designed from the ground up to run the fucking table from day one. Steve Schmidt is going to eat these losers for breakfast. Their ONLY hope is for McCain to have some sort of meltdown in the debates while Obama does not. Otherwise, the entire game is Schmidt's to lose. Posted by: RajivVindaloo at September 21, 2008 02:39 PM (Rn2+D) 55

Key sentence:
This is the same argument that derailed the President's social security reform plan. This lie is a proven winning strategy. The media played it to the hilt on SS reform, and they will do it again with no second thoughts. As Ace already pointed out, the press is in this to win it, and all pretense of objectivity are out the window. November's election isn't about Democrat vs. Republican. #54 I sort of agree wioth your assessment of the Obama campaign, but I think they very much did expect to win the Democratic nomination. They just didn't expect John McCain to win the Republican nomination, and they didn't expect him to actually run a serious campaign to win the election. They thought the landscape was so bad for Republicans because they all drank each other's BDS-infested bathwater, that they would coast to Election Day once they dispatched Hillary. They thought the GOP would have World War III in its primaries and the winner would be some sort of bible-thumping neocon that they could easliy caricature and laugh at for 6 months, and whoever it was would be broke and have 2/3 if the Republicasn pissed off and staying home. I still think they expected Mitt Romney to win. They were not worried about Jeremiah Wright because they thought Romney would not dare bring up religion in a general election campaign (in fact they had planned to run a stealth campaign based on Obama being the "real" Christian). They thought Obama's inexperience would not matter because Romney was just a one-term Governor himself with zero foreign policy experience. They were going to ram all of his flip-flops down his throat and then finish him off as a rich elitist who bought companies and then laid everyone off.
They still do not have a clue about how to run against a genuine American hero, who does not fit their stereotype of Republicans, has the experience their guy clearly lacks, has an actual record of reform and Maverickiness, and has now united the Republican Party with his inspired pick of Sarah Palin. It's clear they are floundering around and firing shotguns all over the place hoping for that one-in-a-million shot that hits McCain in the head. Those familiar with the elections of the last three decades will recall the tired quadrennial trope that "Republicans will take away your Social Security." I would dearly love to see ALL of those old ads strung end-to-end followed by a requested explanation of why this year's demagoguery is any different from before? ("This time they really will" is not the answer.)
Mr. Obama's appeal seems to be based upon his apparent capability to take electoral politics in a new direction. Does this mean going along with the Daley machine, voting in lockstep with Democrats in Congress and campaigning in the fashion to which we've grown accustomed? This is neither change nor reform. PaREP, that map shows my home state MI as blue, but the recent criminal based troubles and resignation of the Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick along with the low approval rating of Gov Grandholm, may just throw a wrench into the DEM political machine here.

If you look at everything going on in this country OBAMA should be at least 20 points in lead of the polls. But he is not, it shows that much of this country is just not sold on his HOPE and CHANGE(tm)

McCain's best friend forever Joe Lieberman was sent to FLA by Al Gore to terrorize the oldsters, and NE Jewish population, with these exact arguments back in the 2000 campaign. It's the same every election.

I would not be so sure that Obama can Florida. The Bradley effect may come into play with a lot of the older Jewish voters-and there are a lot of older Jewish voters in Florida.
BTW, someone should send the Obama You tube nonsense to PumaPac and let them run with it. Posted by: Unhillary at September 22, 2008 08:26 AM (jgcGm) 66
