| Obama Astroturfs at McCain/Palin Rallies; By Amazing Coincicence, UK Telegraph and SacBee Interview the Same Supposed Anti-Palin Republican Woman!Trish Castiglione, a Republican, was sold on McCain-Palin before Wednesday's event. Now she's not so sure — particularly after hearing Palin answer questions from the public for the first time since becoming McCain's running mate.Note she and her husband provided the exact same quote: "Wishy washy, all she knows is about oil." Almost as if working off a script of some kind. Who is "Republican" Trish Castiglione? Well a Goggle search finds that one "Trish Castiglione" works for the: Rapids Community College Foundation. Hey, she is a "Director of Annual Giving." They sponsored events like "Rock the Vote:"How did this one woman find not one but two newspapers to talk to in a rally of 3000? Was she wearing a sign around her neck? "Ask me for juicy scripted quotes against Palin?" Also note she really didn't show up for the event as a Palin supporter -- the event occurred at the college she works at. It seems more likely she was there as an employee of the university and not as a Palin supporter who became disillusioned hearing her speak. How did both papers verify she was a Republican and her husband "undecided"? Is there no suspicion whatsoever that she may not, in fact, be a Republican, given that she works in the most liberal sector in America (the academy)? This resume does not exactly scream "Republican." 3000 people showed up for this event, not because their job required them to, but because they wanted to hear Palin speak. Could the SacBee and telegraph not find enough of such people to interview? Thanks to A Random Person.September 8, 2008 Grand Rapids, MI – On Sept 10, 2008, GRCC students will ROCK THE VOTE from 10 am to 2 pm in an event featuring a variety of voting-related activities, local bands/artists, and interaction with local political leaders including Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, Mayor George Heartwell, and State Representative Michael Sak among others. "The only thing she knows about is oil. She was kind of wishy-washy,"
said Trish Castiglione, a 38-year-old foundation officer at Grand
Rapids Community College, which held the event. "I came in knowing I
would vote for them — I don't know now."
Her husband Joe, an undecided voter, sat listening carefully to both speakers. He said: "I liked McCain, he knows his stuff, but she needs to work on her delivery. There were not a lot of facts. The only thing she knows about is oil. Other than that she was wishy-washy. " I liked Cats. I'm going to see it again and again. I am calling overplayed on this one.
1. It's likely that she was addressing a gaggle of reporters at the same time. Look at any interview anywhere... when was the last time you've seen on microphone? It's likely that 2 reporters were in the same spot and, of course, focus on the quote of the sole nitwit who had something negative to say. Reporting on 3000 people that love Palin is boring... 1 nitwit in 3000 that says something negative- that's news. 2. All non-profits have "Directors of Giving" or some similar position. It's legit. Nothing to do with community organizing. The problem here is the same 'ol bias, gossip seeking reporting we've been dealing with since rocks were soft. If a reporter finds anyone who says anything negative about Palin, they set off a flair gun for the rest of the idiots and they all have quotes on a wire service within minutes. Move along... nothing to see here. Posted by: Damiano at September 19, 2008 06:55 PM (aSQmq) 50
As an astroturfing moby from DailyKos who uses racist codewords and phrases when I infiltrate Rethuglican sites to discredit them, I can say with some authority that these lifelong Republicans, who are not seminar trolls, really are going for Obama. Lincoln Chafee has come out for Obama, for pete's sake. Who is more down-the-line Republican than Chafee? It's over. Posted by: A Balrog of Morgoth at September 19, 2008 07:00 PM (wgLRl) 51
I'm going to second Damiano's post. This probably isn't astroturfing, just an excellent example of how lazy reporters can be. Particularly when someone the journalistic pack chooses to interview happens to give them exactly the sort of juicy, Red-on-Red quotes they (and their editors) are hoping for.
And, again like Damiano said, Director of Annual Giving is a real job function. She probably works with a non-profit foundation that solicits donations to fund scholarships and such. Events and fundraisers are an integral part of that sort of work.
As for posting her email address, that's not nice. Your beef is with the newspapers, not this woman.

I live just outside of G.R. I attended GRCC before transferring to Michigan State. Maybe it has changed in recent years (my last year there was 2001), but there was no discernible liberal bias among the instructors at GRCC. Michigan State on the other hand...
Grand Rapids itself may be fairly liberal (Harwell is the mayor, after all), but all the surrounding areas trend very conservative - if it wasn't for Detroit, Flint, and Lansing, Michigan would be a bleeding red state. None of this is to say that these interviews were kosher - I'm sure that they are not. Just be careful about making the implication that it must be astroturfing based primarily upon the fact that Castiglione works for the academia. If she worked for MSU, I would agree that she is not likely to be among the three or four conservatives that work there. But, (again, unless things have changed drastically in the last few years) I don't think that the same charge cannot reliably be made against GRCC. There's a whole lot of paranoia going on here. Why is anyone even surprised that any normal, intellignent person would realize Sarah Palin is not ready to be our VP. I cringed at her interviews and I cringe at the thought that this person may one day represent the U.S. Wasn't 8 years of George Bush enough?
I applaud Trish for putting Country First and not ideology. We need more people who will think through the issues. The Republican ideology has left us with a broken economy, high unemployment, a housing mess, uncertain health-care and a shrinking middle-class. Clearly the answer isn't in the far right or the far left. Anyhow, that's my 2 cents. The hated Sacbee is "uber liberal" with an interesting hypocritical twist. Many years ago they locked out their union workers in a bitter protracted strike. They replaced them ALL with scabs and aren't unionized to this day. This was way back when I was a kid. Yet they project this image in their editorials that would lead you to believe they support unions, Democrats all, and NEVER mention what they did to destroy THEIR union. Careers were ended in a trade that spanned generations. The buisness was a family before they turned on their employees. They treated their blue collar workers with total contempt. I always refer to the fishwrap as "the hated Bee" when quoting it.
They've been shrinking along with the physical size of their paper for years. The stock is following the NYT into the tank. The only thing that's kept the hated Bee alive is the housing ads from the corrupt developers/land rapers and car dealers. Their stock was $74.50 four years ago and now it's $4.70!!!! Hey, Ace used something of mine. Happy.
I dunno if she was a plant or not. Her comments do sound very rehearsed but maybe she just repeated the same thing (err both of them did) to two different reporters.
It did strike me very odd that she was picked out by two separate papers.
I thought that was interesting enough to see what was available on Google to any knuckle-dragging moron or even genius Official Media Reporters.
I did find (via search engines) her cell phone number, email addys, went through some public power-point presentations she co-authored, etc. but did not find anything obviously related to either political party. I did not post any of that info nor did I try to contact her myself.
And what do you know. I found interesting tidbits that effectively question both stories use of and identical illustrative example that supported the main thesis of republican women doubting Palin.
Glad others found this search interesting if for nothing else to demonstrate yet another piss-poor reporting job done by MSM types. Posted by: ArandomPerson at September 20, 2008 01:47 AM (2PwTK) 71
Curmugeon, I did like the accesss to Castle Rock as a rock climber. I hated that it would take 4-5 hours to leave the area if you wanted to go to say Yosemite. I did not like San Jose at all, it is the only place I ever lived that I hated. It is ugly, over run with illegal aliens, obnoxious liberals and over priced. I do miss an awesome pizza place and the the best taqueria I know of . I am a small town country boy and it just was not me. I have a 1/2 acre of land for the same amount I was paying for a tiny apartment there. I am midway between Tahoe and the coast and in the middle of wine country, good stuff in my book. It takes me five minutes to get out of town. At least I don't have gay cross dressing prostitutes parading up and down my street. Kids can ride their bikes here and be kids.

goat: I understand that. However, believe it or not, San Jose was reasonably conservative well into the 1980's, and at 50 odd miles south of (and a safe enough distance away from) Sodom and Gomorrah West, was actually family friendly. It used to have congresscritters along the lines of Ed Zschau and Ernie Konnyu (randy old goat he was, but reliably right-wing), and of course, lots of at least pro-defense RINOs like Tom Campbell. But I think the rise of environmentalism and the end of the Cold War meant the end of conservative patriots there. That corrresponded with skyrocketing costs of housing, as the "every swamp is sacred" and "every hill is sacred" crowds made new housing impossible and pushed the working people out to Tracy and Manteca. Meanwhile, the defense industries left, replaced by the effete artists working in firms like Pixar and Silicon Graphics. That's my diagnosis, anyway. When the San Jose Jerk-The-Knee News hired reconquista traitor Joe Rodriguez to write (5th) columns in the early 1990's, I knew it was over. And I didn't think they could get any local columnist worse than weenie liberal Pat Dillon. Posted by: Curmudgeon at September 20, 2008 02:28 AM (kP7wk) 73

Gee. That's funny. My comment at the Telegraph wasn't posted asking if/how they confirmed that she was a Republican; how is it that she was interviewed in another newspaper if chosen at random from a crowd of 3,000; and pointing out her link to a liberal organisation; plus a link to Ace's h/t link above [when the Telegraph's guidelines clearly state that inserting third party links in comments' sections are allowed]. Isn't that passing strange? Posted by: andycanuck at September 20, 2008 11:38 AM (5YIG4) 75
And Kara, a concerned Christian slut, makes an appearance at the Telegraph: I was leaning McCain till his pick of Sarah Palin. I am Christian but something about Sarah Palin does not sit right with me. I am a conservative Christian but I do not think creationism should be taught in schools. I am mostly pro-life but rape and incest should be considered very differently from other situations and I have a problem with Sarah's views on these issues. Charging victims of rape seems very cold and unchristian to me. I will be voting for Barack Obama this year-I don't believe the lies that he is a Muslim. And, oddly enough, my second attetmpted comment that answered a leftie troll in the comments section and didn't include any third-party links still hasn't been posted yet either. How strange. For what it's worth (and especially for those among you stalking her and sending her hate mail) - I work with Trish and can verify that she's an authentic person who expressed authentic sentiments at the event.
She's no Obama campaign plant. She happened to be sitting up front at the rally (because employees of the college received more access to the event than the general public - which was the same case back in 2003 when G.W. Bush made a stop on our campus), and she was interviewed simultaneously by several reporters both before and after the event. Seriously; is it really that hard to believe that Sarah Palin doesn't impress every single Republican (especially here in Romney country where a lot of people are likely still raw about the VP decision)?
