| Bye Bye, SitemeterIt's annoying because now I'm going to have to switch to someone else, and "lose" the record of my past visits. Not a big deal, I suppose, but annoying. I cannot begin to explain how awful Sitemeter is now. Stuff I used to be able to access I can't. And it takes multiple clicks to see even the most basic information. I have news for programming geeks: There is a learning curve to using applications and, unlike you guys, who seem to get off on learning new menus and the like, the rest of us do not have the time or inclination to re-learn this kind of thing. We do not find the prospect of sitting for hours pushing buttons in frustration to see where information is now hidden (and how it has been renamed) exciting or even interesting. At all. Where are my weekly stats? Yearly? Monthly? No idea. Oh, I do have a big pie chart telling me that 45% of my visitors enter the site at ace.mu.nu, and smaller numbers of people enter into various individual-post pages. Thanks for that. I had no idea. You guys seem to have the idea: "Oh, it's like a little game. It'll be fun for them to learn where we've hidden stuff." Why do you believe this? My suspicion is that they're trying to monetarize Sitemeter and force us to pay the subscription. I can't fault them for that -- however, I damn sure am not paying for this crap. Let me have the old system back and maybe I'd be willing to pay $3 a month for it. Not $7. And there's no way I'm paying a dime for this crap in its current incarnation, where stuff that ought to be simple to find is now a fun little mini-game for me. Debacle. Rollback: Reacting far more quickly than Coca-Cola, Sitemeter is rolling back to its old implementation. Here's the thing: If you want to add gadgets and doohickeys, or offer a new interface, fine. But don't lose the old functionality, for God's sakes. Some strange people may prefer the new interface -- fine, let them select it. Or even make it default, and let me select old-school. But what is the deal with losing nearly all the old functionality and replacing it with unusable nonsense? It cannot be stressed enough that bloggers want to see how their traffic is doing and, especially when it spikes, where that traffic is coming from. The new system did not have, as far as I could tell, any report about referring sites. None. Nada. Zip. The second-most important feature (possibly the first) was just zapped, for no particular reason. In exchange for that, I get to see pie charts telling me that most people are viewing the site on Windows XP operating system. Sitemeter is doing the right thing by going back to the old system. Again, add all the bells and whistles you want, but don't change the basic layout. Add a few more buttons -- trust us, we can find buttons, and we can click on them if we find the new information useful. Comments1
I thought it was only at my site, where I use the free version. Nice to know it sucks for the big boys, too.

Send that notice over to the shitheads at microsoft that redesigned office. Just try using Excel. Hey great you made this silly little ribbon menu or whatever the fuck you call it. How about providing the original menu option though too, so I don't spend 5 minutes looking for the option I want that was always in the same spot, and I passed over it 10 times.

Wait until you try to ask a question and they tell you -- oh, you're just resistant to change, go with the new way. Meanwhile, where's my files, where's my stuff, I don't have time to play with your stupid NEW way, I need the info NOW. IT people are so delicate, geez. Google analytics is much better, sitemeter has been shit for a long time. But you can use both.

>>>At least you guys can sign in. They can't find me, so it's bye-bye. I'm not going to re-register.
I had that problem too; they couldn't find my email. However, when I logged in with my sitemeter code and password, it worked. if you don't remember the password, search your emails for it; you've probably requested it before. Posted by: ace at September 14, 2008 03:51 PM (1WR4H) 9
Instapundit hates it as well. There are programming geeks and there are people good at user interfaces, and there overlap is much smaller than either one of these. I'm good at mastering menus and options, but it gets really tiresome to have to learn a new interface unless it is unquestionably better and offers an immediate payoff. Glenn reynolds even coined a term for this: interface fatigue. Posted by: Maetenloch at September 14, 2008 03:52 PM (SbVFf) 10
Yep. Sitemeter sucks donkey balls.

Fun sitemeter fact: 0.353% of ace's traffic comes from the Google keyword string, "Bart has juicy, hot buns." Strange, I know.
Posted by: Warden at September 14, 2008 04:04 PM (QoR4a) 13
It was a hassle, and I screwed up the same way as you. Now, I took a little time with it, and I can get the info satisfactorily. But then again, I have the time. My tens of hits a week are easy to glance through!
Posted by: dfbaskwill at September 14, 2008 04:05 PM (z6fKT) 14
As far as I can tell, all the information I found useful is now hidden like it's an Easter egg, and all the information I didn't care about is up front and center.
Sure, it's useless, but at least I pay for it! Posted by: Planet Moron at September 14, 2008 04:07 PM (tqQkH) 15

Ace, here are a few analytics apps I've used:
Mint: http://www.haveamint.com/ Urchin: http://www.google.com/urchin/index.html Google Analytics: http://www.google.com/analytics/ Mint is great because it's VERY simple to use and gives you real-time results. Urchin is great because it's pretty darn powerful. You can do click-path analysis and hierarchical popularity rankings. The learning curve is a little steep and data is polled hourly. And, lastly, there's Google analytics. Google Analytics implements the site overlay report which is -- IMHO -- one of the more interesting ways to analyze traffic and user behavior. It polls on a daily basis. Just some other options to choose from. Not sure if your site can even support them, but I hope it's useful information nonetheless. dfb,
How do I access weekly charts and the like? All I can see is the current day, and there are no buttons for anything more than that. Posted by: ace at September 14, 2008 04:12 PM (1WR4H) 18
Yea, the new site is shit! Let us know what you decide to use instead -- I have no info of any value on my page and I can't click any of the other pages because I don't pay to track the 100 people who stumble onto me by Google.
I too was locked out, even after requesting my new password -- but when I closed the window and came back later I was logged in without even trying.
Sucks!

Like Devil's Advocate I spent several hours trying to figure out what's what now on sitemeter, and after giving up and spending the $7 ended up loosing all of my historical data - 4 years worth.
The new interface is total crap, navigation is clumsy and iffy, and for seemingly no reason whatsoever the main page flips into a sign up page - like it hasn't ever heard of me before. I'm giving up, Sitemeter can take my $7 and shove it up their ass; I'm looking now for a replacement. Anyone have any ideas? Posted by: Richard at September 14, 2008 04:31 PM (nFgIB) 22
I've been using Site Meter and Statcounter for a while. Statcounter.com's widget seems fairly robust.

Hey, I'm a geek and I can't make heads or tails of it. As far as I'm concerned, geekery is for making things simpler (more elegant, as my eighth-grade math teacher used to say).
The abomination that is now sitemeter is useless to me. It's even worse than new comments thingy. Ok, that might be a little harsh. Posted by: lizardbrain at September 14, 2008 04:43 PM (UqbZv) 24

Programmers (and project managers) like to change things, because if they didn't, why would they have jobs?
MS is a funny example (not funny ha-ha, but funny like a dead fish) with Office 2k7 and Vista - both massive changes with some good ideas and a lot of terrible ones. A lot of corporate customers are still on XP and Office 2003, and mightily resisting this "change." Some are expressly waiting for "the next version." Microsoft wants us to switch to office 2007, our bosses said "when IT can make the interface like Office 2003." Yeah, I know that can be done already, but the bureaucracy's wheels turn slow. Posted by: Merovign at September 14, 2008 05:03 PM (UXoQt) 33
Is that for reals, mesa? I HATE THE NEW DINGUS.
All I want is where the links are coming from, and hits by day, week, month and year. The rest can fall in the lake and drown. Say, how the hell are they extracting data about age and gender of visitors? What part of a tracking cookie figures THAT shit out, and how? Posted by: S. Weasel at September 14, 2008 05:08 PM (Dy8+A) 34

MS is a funny example (not funny ha-ha, but funny like a dead fish) with Office 2k7 and Vista - both massive changes with some good ideas and a lot of terrible ones. To be fair Vista is not so terrible by itself, but it was rolled out of beta a year too early, its initial drivers were shit, and its minimal system requirements were way too low. Vista SP1 will be what it should have been at release. Which is par for the course for MS. And why does MS feel compelled to change the interface every release? I know they want to show that the release is different and 'better' and all, but mostly it just forces me through a new learning curve. By contrast MacOS and linux (gnome and KDE) seem much more evolutionary in their interface changes. Posted by: Maetenloch at September 14, 2008 05:14 PM (SbVFf) 36
I eventually dropped Sitemeter in favor of Clicky (aff link) For your level of traffic you'd have to pay but it is so, SO much better than Sitemeter.
For people with less traffic they have a free version too. I use Google Analytics as well but I needed something with a more pleasant interface that can monitor traffic in real time too. Posted by: Lincoln at September 14, 2008 05:17 PM (GYHOH) 37
Well, I know I saw the weekly, monthly crap at one point, but now I can't seem to get into the site at all!! It's not quite as bad as first glance, but still isn't what the original site was for elegance and ease of use. (That's if I can get back in ever again!) I have a feeling there are millions of morons coursing around their site right now, mucking up everything and causing the hamster wheels to malfunction.

for those who don't know... http://www.statcounter.com/ - great, easy to use... duplicates stats for those who use cloaking http://www.addfreestats.com/ - easy to use, lots of information shows Google adsense clicks http://www.google.com/analytics/ - kinda sucks too but really accurate. The IT business used to attract serious people. Now it's filled with socially-inept cubazoids who lack any knowledge of history, psychology, and (dare I say it) politics. As a veteran of the computer biz, I say many programmers today are pony-tailed geeks working in garbage strewn veal pens, angrily wrestling daily with the contradiction between their belief that knowledge of "code" makes them demi-gods , and their low prestige in the corporate world. Only Customer Service or (shudder) Manufacturing are farther down the ladder. The real reason the latest sitemeter roll-out is such a fuck-up is that these self-loathing losers have for months been spending their working hours posting BDS/PDS rants on Kos and DU. So, Mr. Valued Customer, you wind up not just with buggy "barely beta" releases, but with products devoid of rationality, let alone "enhancements" reflecting customer feedback for more features and better functionality. Union carpenters working on government-funded projects have a similar "who gives a shit" attitude toward their work, best expressed by a common saying: "Fuck it; nail it."

All the information you're saying that sitemeter provides is also tracked by your web server software...can't you get a login for a CPanel or something for your Mu.Nu domain? Why involve a third party in something like that? If you register a domain and host it on a 'LAMP' (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP...90% of the servers out there cuz it's free), you get a login to an administrative Control Panel a.k.a. 'CPanel' that has all the logging and statistics you're looking for. Maybe it's time for AceOSpadesHQ.com? Posted by: dave at September 15, 2008 03:28 AM (1dEHC) 59
