| SNL Sarah Palin OpeningIt's sorta funny. The smart liberals are really pushing that dinosaur thing they got fooled by, eh?Comments1
So Aceypoo, we're both alone here together, late on this saturday night...
My date didn't go too well either... Posted by: Ace's #1 Fan Boy at September 14, 2008 04:09 AM (eKgqT) Posted by: Teller at September 14, 2008 04:12 AM (3HXMZ) 3
I don't think SNL has been funny since the early 90s, and my opinion wasn't affected by this clip.
Yeah, guys, repeating Dem smears and talking points is what passes for "humor" on SNL. *yawn* Posted by: Merovign at September 14, 2008 04:14 AM (UXoQt) 4
"as can be evidenced by this button"
damn right, that's about it. and even kinda sorta funny (which SNL hasn't been since Eddie Murphy) Fey's got the accent pretty good, but they both are just so damn smug. I can't wait for BO to lose 40 states and watch them cry. Posted by: it's full of stars at September 14, 2008 04:15 AM (OeLz9) 5
watching the whole thing, it got pretty good at the end (before the dinosaur bit)

OK, so what was it that Hillary looked up on the internet and did not like?

NBC pulled it already. *Shocker!*

If there was anything truly funny to be pulled from Sara Palin, this isn't it. May all of the liberal idiots be this clueless re how to be compelling.

Sarah Palin is hotter than Tina Fey.

@JB
At least in the political arena our women are so much better looking than the ones on the left. and smarter and nicer and more fun to be around and I could go on all night but there is football in the morning. Posted by: David at September 14, 2008 05:20 AM (HAdov) 12
It's funny, and it made me laugh a lot. Yeah, it relies on the idea that Sarah Palin is an idiot and the utterly bugshit insane notion that the media is taking it easy on her, but Tina Fey still captures that homespun sexiness and the woman playing Hillary is does a wonderful job of capturing Hillary's passive aggressive fury and incredulity at having been displaced so unexpectedly.
It was also the high point of the entire show, and it happened in the first five minutes. Posted by: Kensington at September 14, 2008 05:40 AM (xFNQx) 13
As for the term that Hillary said she looked up, it sounded like "flurge" to me, and that seems to be urban slang for an non-erect penis. The usage would seem to be that Hillary is a flurge, i.e., that she makes the male dick go soft.
That was another nice bit about the skit, that all of the examples of sexism related to Sarah were positive (MILF, bikini photoshops, etc.), and all the examples related to Hillary, much to her consternation, were all negative. I can't help it -- it made me laugh. Posted by: Kensington at September 14, 2008 05:43 AM (xFNQx) 14
I had high hopes, but thought the Palin humor was pretty weak.

SNL isn't funny. Mr Mike takes a gigantic pair of stainless steel needles, about 12 inches long, and jams them forcefully into the eyes of every single ivy league metrosexual cowardly writer on that show. Then sets a screaming Tina Fey on fire. Posted by: Senator Rev. Dr. E Buzz Miller at September 14, 2008 07:22 AM (vFeQi) 18
gp, Good find. Although these days, finding a liberal frothing at the mouth over the very existence of Sarah Palin is as easy as finding a Dunkin' Donuts in Massachusetts.
What's with all the hatred and anger though? She's only been around for two weeks. How on earth did they fill up with hate for her so quickly? What on earth could she have possibly done to them? It doesn't have anything to do with her. I fear that there is a segment of our population that lives with hate in their hearts every day. Hate can be such a destructive emotion, but some people toss it around like they're five years old. I have a feeling that the instant hatred is due to her being pro-life and living those values. I used to be liberal and pro-choice and I would become apoplectic with rage whenever my views were questioned. I think that's because at the very core of it I knew that what I believed was wrong, but never wanted to admit it. So, Sarah's very existence calls into question the very basis of their political beliefs and as such, she deserves to be hated. freemo: If someone is part of one of their target groups (eg. women (Palin), Ivy Leaguers (Bush)), yet doesn't recognize the innate superiority of their liberal awesometasticness, they hate them.
See, Fey can be funny. I love 30 Rock. Sue me. I know that Jack Donaghy is supposed to be a parody of Republicans, but I love him. I find myself wanting to be like him. I'm queer for Jack Donaghy, so I can't write Fey off completely. It's just that the people who write for SNL and approve the sketches don't understand what normal people think is funny. I've thought for the last ten years or so that maybe if I was a liberal who lived in one of NYC's buroughs, I'd think it was funny. Hint: making non-obvious observations and connections is funny. Just saying what everyone else is saying isn't. Mo. Rons. Posted by: mr.frakypants at September 14, 2008 08:05 AM (ZA24H) 21
Might be offended - but, fortunately, haven't cared about SNL in years and still see no reason to.
(and this isn't just politics - I thought Dana Carvey's parodies of George Bush, Sr. were funny and I even thought Will Ferrell doing George W. Bush was pretty funny. I'm not the first person to say this, but SNL still sucks.) Posted by: AD at September 14, 2008 08:13 AM (PeYVg) 22
SNL's funniness goes through peaks and valleys. Right now, IMO, it's in a valley the size of the Mariana Trench.

What is funny is reading the comments on the Mitchell column. From a quick check they run about 90-10 calling her out for being a racist, in-the-septic-tank, hypocrite. Almost worth reading all 450+ of them.

The whole show was an anti religion scree. Home schooled zombie kids? Dinosaurs? Med labs in Sarah's hometown? These people are hateful cocksuckers with no pretense of shame. Think, "The One" was suppose to be on the opening show. Tell you anything? Phillips looked like what he is, an ADD swim zombie. His skits were so flat that I was embarrassed for him. NBC! The network of lefty, why don't they just rename it Obly's Net. Posted by: kempermanx at September 14, 2008 09:20 AM (2+9Yx) 29
You know, the first sketch at least had Fey really nailing down the Palin mannerisms, and I've always thought Poehler's Hillary was spot on. But they are trying so hard to Dan Quayle-ize her. Let's hope too obviously. The real offensive bit was actually during Weekend Update with the whole Alaska Joe bit. That was nothing but Kos talking points said by somebody dressed up as a lumberjack. Also, anybody notice this. Not one Obama joke, I don't think. Nor one McCain joke. They went after Palin, and Palin alone. Posted by: Lee at September 14, 2008 09:32 AM (AFE7Q) 30
I didn't think it was that bad. I've seen stuff far more vicious and condescending in recent weeks. The idea that Palin is getting easy press is absurd, but the stuff about how badly Hill wanted to win and what she must be thinking right now is probably dead on, funny because it's true.
Posted by: Sav at September 14, 2008 09:40 AM (VonU7) 31
Yeah, Lee, the "Alaska Man" bit was too much. I turned it off and went to bed after the first really offensive "well, she had her family up on the stage at the convention, so they are fair game" bullshit.

Let's say it again, these cocksuckers are suckers of cock. I haven't watched the show in years, what is with that fat black guy? And the fat white chick? Are they picking actors in the NBC cafeteria? No talent that I could see in any of them. No wonder the show is so boring. That was music? Interesting, the majority of advertisers? Hollywood movies for teenage boys and girls. Gezz, I getting old, the show sucked. Posted by: kempermanx at September 14, 2008 09:53 AM (2+9Yx) 35
Interesting, the majority of advertisers? Hollywood movies for teenage boys and girls. Yes, if SNL really pushes this hard, McCain/Palin may lose some points among the 12-17 year old voting demographic. Posted by: Lee at September 14, 2008 09:58 AM (AFE7Q) 36

Sometime's I like to watch the acting and not pay attention to the content. I thought that Fey did a pretty good job not only with the accent, but with the speech patterns and body language. You know sometimes you have to wonder do SNL and other "comedy" shows really want Obama to win since he's off limits ..because any joke about him is racist no matter what it is..sort of like dose Keith Olbermann and the rest of MSNBC want to have Barry O in the white House where they won't be able to talk "truth to Power"...seems to me that Barry O winning would be the worst thing that could happen to the Left-wing media in this country.

I thought it was funny, too. I don't know about the rest of the show but this was decent enough to Palin. I don't think there's anything wrong with making fun of Palin as long as it's not vicious, and come on, this could have been much harder on her than that. As it was, all they did conjure up were slams about her looks and intelligence...and they were supposed to be talking about SEXISM in the MSM. IMO, they took some harder shots at Hillary throughout. And remember, many people think the SNL skit about the Bush-Gore debate -- the one in which they were both made fun of but Gore came off a lot worse -- had a negative effect on Gore's image. So, there have still been some funny bits on SNL over more recnt years (but I wouldn't know since I don't watch it). One more thing to consider: if Palin was at the Correspondent's dinner and made those jokes about HERSELF, would you have laughed? Posted by: Barbelle at September 14, 2008 11:43 AM (qF8q3) 53
Come on guys, we aren't the thin-skinned ones in this race.
The skit was funny and not damaging. Yeah, they played her as a sort of magic rube, one who glides effortlessly and cluelessly to where she wants to go, leaving the conniving, hard-working and very angry women like Hillary in her wake. We've seen that movie before and we always end up loving the heroine. Remember SNL is show biz and to them the Republican is either evil and conniving or stupid, maybe even an "amiable dunce" like Ronald Reagan. Given the choice we should thank God they went for dumb and lovable instead playing her as a cold, calculating bitch - all pot-luck-dinner smiles on the outside but cheerleader-mom-puppy-dog-poisoner on the inside. That would've been harder to get a laugh for, but it would've deadly if they could stick the landing. See, it isn't hard for people to watch this skit and laugh and like the person being caricatured and then watch an interview or read something that makes clear that our girl isn't really an airhead. So then the composite is likable, and not-really-dumb but maybe rustic and possibly downright cagey in a folksy under-the-radar way. That's about as good as you can expect a conservative thoroughbred to play in the press. I'll take it. Besides, I did laugh my ass off. Posted by: Ronsonic at September 14, 2008 11:51 AM (ywSvi) 54

yeah I thought last night's SNL was funny for about the 1st minute of the opening sketch, then it pretty much descended into good old fashioned lefty talking points, with 3 separate anti-Palin mentions in 'the weekend update' segment alone. The rest of the show sucked giant diseased donkey balls. Michael Phelps looked foolish, but I blame the writers for that. And Amy Poehler in close up on my widescreen HDTV? Not pretty.

to Breaker19 - from WIkipedia
Creationism in the West is usually based on creation according to Genesis, and in its broad sense covers a wide range of beliefs and interpretations. Through the 19th century the term most commonly referred to direct creation of individual souls, in contrast to traducianism. However, by 1929 in the United States the term became particularly associated with Christian fundamentalist opposition to human evolution and belief in a young Earth.[i.e. one that is 6 - 10 thousand years old] Several U.S. states passed laws against the teaching of evolution in public schools, as upheld in the Scopes Trial. Evolution was omitted entirely from school textbooks in much of the United States until the 1960s. Since then, renewed efforts to introduce teaching creationism in American public schools in the form of flood geology, creation science, and intelligent design have been consistently held to contravene the constitutional separation of Church and State by a succession of legal judgements. The meaning of the term creationism was contested, but by the 1980s it had been co-opted by proponents of creation science and flood geology. READ THIS PART CAREFULLY - it's why we will become a third-rate power under the Creationist Republicans: When scientific research produces conclusions which contradict a creationist interpretation of scripture, the strict creationist approach is either to reject the conclusions of the research, its underlying scientific theories, and/or its methodology. For this reason, both creation science and intelligent design have been labeled as pseudoscience by the mainstream scientific community. The most notable disputes concern the effects of evolution on the development of living organisms, the idea of common descent, the geologic history of the Earth, the formation of the solar system, and the origin of the universe. Ok, gang. I saw opener through oxrock's link up there. Thanks, OR. Now then.... It was funny. I chuckled. (Point of fact: I don't care about her nutty politics, I have always had the hots for Tina Fey.) I loved the mock "bikini gun" pose. Fey does a great Palin, no surprise there. As has been noted, they mocked her, but not viciously, nothing really over the line. They have been meaner to Hillary, and were definitely as mean to Hillary in this very sketch. Amy/Hillary's head exploding to "Anyone can be President, you just have to want it enough" was priceless. POINT MOST WORTH REMBERING: Politicians ignore SNL parodies at their peril, because they do hold a light up to how they are seen in a way that they might not like and need to know. My only real cringe moment was Tina/Sarah repeating the lipstick joke as Amy/Hillary tells the punchline five times before Tina/Sarah even finishes. Sarah Palin does have a problem with repetativeness, possibly for reasons that smarter people than I who are advising her understand, but I do cringe a bit when I hear her do it, and it can't hurt for her campaign to get that too. It can be a potent criticism in the hands of her enemies. Keep that theme in mind as you watch stuff like this, it actually serves a purpose. (Remember, people really started to "get" how much the press is in Obama's tank finally when SNL stuck the needle in, mocking with fawning and genuflecting reporters at the "debates".) So, in a nutshell, conservatives, for the love of GOD, get thicker skins about this stuff. We take pride in NOT whining like little beyotches at every turn, and I hate to see that squandered. At first I was angry. I was annoyed. I felt indignation over someone else calling our candidate dumb. Clearly, you had gotten the better of me and our party. Then I remembered we're the ones winning in the polls . . . Posted by: AD at September 14, 2008 01:35 PM (PeYVg) 76
I thought it was pretty funny, and nastier to "Hillary" than to "Sarah".
It may be a good point about the repetition, but while 37 million people heard her speech at the convention, 260 million didn't. People who have actual lives aren't clued in to every word a candidate speaks the way political junkies are. That's why politicians have "stump speeches". Obama has one, too, and I'm sure he repeats the same lines over and over as well. Posted by: lmg at September 14, 2008 01:47 PM (A/vgC) 77
Two things after a second watch: Tina/Sarah said "just two years ago I was Mayor of Wasilla" which is of course untrue. She left that six years ago. And when Amy/Hillary said "ask this one (Palin) about dinosaurs", I noted that the audience reaction was virtually nil. Either they didn't get it, or they did and didn't respond to it as the writers hoped. Take that for what you will. Posted by: Andrew X at September 14, 2008 02:03 PM (ne9bG) 78
WTF? I commented on this early this morning, and now the comment is gone. Is there a memory hole here? What's going on? Posted by: John at September 14, 2008 02:14 PM (S8kxQ) 79
Obama's choice to avoid this particular SNL was a good one for him. “I support Barack Obama….as you can see by this pin.” would likely have set of all kinds of subconscious angst. Now visualize him stuttering about "foreign policy experience" then having to respond to: "I can see Russia from my house"

For me it was funnier on the second viewing than the first. I have this urge to protect Sarah, but I'm pretty sure that if I said so in her presence she'd knock me to the ground, pull out a deer knife, and ask whether I understood why cutting around the anus is the key to field dressing. I haven't watched SNL since the first cast was rotated out, but I do like the way that art and life are intermingling here. When Sarah! first appeared many people leapt to the Tina Fey comparison. I have to give Tina props for getting the voice and the mannerisms down perfectly. Posted by: Prufrock at September 14, 2008 02:31 PM (vISQb) 86
SNL not funny since the early 90's when it was at it's peak. Liberal and or female humor just doesn't work. You can tell that Fey loaded up on libs and chicks on the writing staff. I watched last night and it was an embarassment- not one funny sketch. How is that possible?
Posted by: dan at September 14, 2008 02:39 PM (UkzMD) 87
Tina and Amy were right on and I thought it was pretty funny but it did sort of peter out at the end with the viral email stuff, too obscure.
The rest of the show was one of the worst ever and isn't Phelps 15 minutes about done yet? The guy may be one of the best swimmers ever but he's dumb as a stump, terrible host. Can they please limit the guests on Weekend Update to no more than 2 please? Amy and Seth had a vibe going when they first took over but it's pretty lame now. I think Amy is working herself too hard. Alaska man was completely stupid. The only thing worse was Cathy. Cathy? Fucking really? And Barkley? How lame is that impression? Can we have less impressions and more comedy please? The digital short was garbage too. Horrendous show overall. Posted by: Rocks at September 14, 2008 02:59 PM (7rbe9) 88
I'm of an age to remember when SNL first burst on the scene (back when it was funny -- at least occasionally). I tuned in last night to see how the self-styled intelligentsia would try to wield humor as a weapon to slay the PalinMonster. And here's my takeaway:
1. Tina Fey did a great job mimicking Gov. Palin's voice and speech patterns. The look was pretty much spot-on as well. But, Tina Fey can't help smirking and telling us that she's in on the joke. This is a fatal flaw in any comic mimicry (the comic actor MUST play it straight and let the material deliver the laughs). Jon Stewart and others manifest this same flaw -- that "chocolate" smile that always curl their lips. 2. The content of the skit fell flat (this is the thing that makes SNL unwatchable -- their comic premise is sometimes good but their execution is often (always?) heavy handed and lame). The SNL writers (and producers and actors) sought to portray Gov. Palin as an airhead -- and Her Highness Hillary as accomplished and entitled -- albeit suffering from overweening ambition and a sense of entitlement. The members (an overwhelming majority, I expect) of the SNL audience probably found this skit funny -- largely because they're up-to-date with the desperate untruths the media has tried to float. 3, This SNL episode put everything in context a few minutes later when it presented a truly awful skit of a kind of college bowl game show pitting some high school dullards against what supposed to be a "typical" Fundamentalist Christian Family -- lifted right out of the Ozarks (and the set of Deliverance). Of course the SNL skit was unfunny. And of course it was crass. And of course it showed us all once again the ignorance of these writers and producers and actors who have this strange need to imagine that people of faith are stupid and narrow minded -- and only them urban folks have any sense at all. What I don't get (and never will) is why these folks keep patting themselves on the back and telling each other how smart they are -- and all the while they're insulting folks who might otherwise be loyal viewers. And you wonder why network television (and the MSM) is failing? Posted by: Norman Rogers at September 14, 2008 03:51 PM (3+19E) Posted by: Nom de Blog at September 14, 2008 03:54 PM (nOQ1R) 90

thanks for posting the clip, i missed it last nite.... they do seem to be stuck on the whole "dinosaur" thing don't they? libs are so easily sucked in by their own bullshit, it'd be funny if it weren't so lame Posted by: shoey at September 14, 2008 04:29 PM (docNz) 92
1) The key to the skits lack of humor is that they're making fun of a quality Palin is not only not famous for, she doesn't even possess it. It's like mocking the "fact" that she's ugly or only three and a half feet tall. Caricature is exaggerating someone's qualities, not inventing them.
2) The fact that the left has so readily accepted this invented meme has one significant benefit - more and more people are realizing how divested from reality the actual "committed" left is. I've seen one or two "vague" liberals start to recoil from the obviously false propaganda, and if they keep it up, that number will grow. 3) Yeah, that was some pretty weak trolling. Come on, little forest buddies, buck up! Posted by: Merovign at September 14, 2008 04:53 PM (UXoQt) 93

Democrats think Palin and Bush are stupid because they talk about nuke-yu-lar power. I think Democrats are borderline retarded, because they think nuke-le-ar power plants, with less than 5% U-235, can blow up like atom bombs, which have nearly pure U-235. I am trying to watch this idiotic Alaska Pete thing on SNL, and so far, I just think he makes a lot of sense, at least until the end when you get into the Daily Kos talking points portion. His points, that are somehow supposed to be funny? Leave her family alone, stop criticizing people for living out their values, and stop saying Palin can't handle things because she's a mom. Do NORMAL people disagree with any of this? And you could tell the audience was even lukewarm about the whole thing. They barely laughed at all. And really, snl? Did you have to have the guy say something about indoor plumbing? God. Posted by: Lea at September 14, 2008 07:59 PM (Af7AH) 98

Oh yeah, you R's are so funny and complex. hahahahaha Except that you CANNOT laugh at yourselves. Even when your candidate uses the slogan "Country First" and picks a running mate that wishes she was a smart and witty and worldly as Tina Fey. Now, that is funny. Bye bye Sarah Palin... go home to Alaska and be Grandma. Leave the Democrats alone so we can clean up the big mess. Posted by: bluegirltoo at September 18, 2008 01:16 AM (k2Fqk) 106
I thought it was funny! I am a bitter clinger... lol, and I can laugh at myself. I am a funny dude. (not really) But why would I want to waste all that time in a kind of jocular self abusing style when I have so many funny stupid ass-ed liberals to laugh at? Sarah Palin scares the little green apples out of the left and I love it! I love her! I want to have her love child! Not really, but hey, could you blame me?

FLIRJ: An acronym for "First Lady I'd Rim Job", and a reference to Hilary
Clinton. Made famous by the 9/13/2008 opening skit of Saturday Night
Live dialog
To clear any confusion Posted by: Sean at September 21, 2008 12:24 PM (Snt/X) 109
I thought FLIRG was Flaming Liberal I'd Rather Grope. That being said the skit was funny...for both liberals and conservatives. No politician is perfect, on either side, and it's when people start believing that their political candidate is good and the other is evil that negativity toward anybody on the "other side" erupts. People who did not laugh at this skit cannot laugh at themselves and need to stop taking a comedy sketch so personally. I also don't like people calling themselves "normal" and people from another political party not normal. It makes you look closed-minded and that makes your party look bad. Think before you talk please.

I think it's great how upset these conservative doucebags get over an SNL skit. The earlier posts don't really capture the pain the republicans must feel now that their Vice Presidential candidate is a confirmed moron. But SNL didn't confirm this, sadly she did alright confiming it on her own. I can't wait for the Vice Presidential debate. Then I won't be able to wait for SNL. McCain's not even interesting enough to be spoofed. Thank God Palin came around. It's really livened my mood lately. Justice sure is sweet. Tina Fey is a much more qualified choice for VP. And you know it's true.

Tina Fey's impersonation of Palin is an insult to the female gender not to mention the fact that she is making $$$ off poking fun at the next potential Vice President of the USA!!!. Just grab the money and run Tina run.....makes you no more than a high price call girl! Guys...fellow replublicans...arent you as smart or dumb as Tina Fey??? Bring a "Little Rascals" "BUCKWHEAT" black dude on stage portrayed as Obama and let TINA & BUCKWHEAT duke it out!. Now they are on equal ground! Hey it might even be funny not to mention worth a MILLION bucks to the genious who pulls it off, first!!! Posted by: China at September 30, 2008 09:45 PM (8nB5X) 112
Oh you all are just angry that the skit was so dead on for Sarah Palin! Come on people, she had her pegged...it was hilarious! "And I can see Russia from my house..." haha, classic. The woman has no brain, it's a disgrace to think that she is supposed to represent women here in the US. Let's elect a homecoming queen as Vice President of our nation...great idea McCain! Her interviews resemble a ditsy Miss USA pageant, in which she has no concept of the issues facing our country and how to deal with those problems. Dear Lord help us!

God help us IF she gets in the White House! Posted by: Glen at October 19, 2008 02:59 PM (fIRNT) 114
Guess what. It is funny. The audience did laugh. They got it. What isn't funny is the vulgarity some need to use to hide their ignorance. The same kind of ignorance used by rablerouser Palin in her speeches to incite a crowd to spew hate filled comments. I guess the Republicans thought it was necessary to clothe this pig in designer fashions as lipstick wasn't enough. I wouldn't kick her out of bed but I wouldn't let her into the White House.
