Gallup: house up for grabs! Obama "coat tails" == anchors?

Schwing!

...If these numbers are sustained through Election Day -- a big if -- Republicans could be expected to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives...

16 I still think that the Donks are going to take a majority in both houses, and may even get a veto-proof majority if all the stars align correctly. A worsening economy usually favors the Democrats, and a populist message will sway lots of voters. The GOP is going to have a hard time running as the party of fiscal responsibility after eight years of pissing away taxpayer money. The gigantic bailout of Fannie and Freddie will go on their ledger as well, even if the main authors of that mess are mainly Democrats.

My advice is to hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

25 I don't necessarily think *all* of this is due to Obama's stupidity, as fun as that would be.

The Dem takeover in 2006, as well as their gains over the past two years, were in part due to a "perfect storm" of safe Republican seats going Dem for reasons other than the normal issues of the time.  Three that stick in my mind are Tom Delay's seat in Texas, Mark Foley's seat in Florida, and the seat Richard Baker vacated due to retirement earlier this year in Louisiana.

In Delay's case, the Dems blocked the Republicans from putting another name on the ballot once Delay dropped out after winning the Republican primary.  That meant that the challenger's name had to be written in on the ballot.

In Foley's case, a slam-dunk win disappeared overnight when the story broke about his prediliction for male campaign staffers and got national air-time every day until Election Day.  Since the Republicans couldn't Torrecelli him off the ballot in favor of a viable candidate, the seat was lost.

In Baker's case, a special election following his resignation (for retirement, not due to scandal) gave that seat to Dems for the first time since the 1970s because of poor candidate selection by the Republicans.  (Woody Jenkins, the Republican candidate in that race, is hated by many people around here on both sides of the aisle.  Him becoming the Republican candidate depressed turnout and allowed his Dem opponent to win.)

I'm sure there's probably another 6-8 seats that were lost in this manner as well, which could be regained in this cycle with proper candidate selection and so forth.

Combine those seats with the "Blue Dog" seats in areas such as North Carolina that may be in re-election trouble due to their association with the national Dems and/or their own scandals (Heath Schuler, I'm looking at *you*), and there may be enough to flip the house back to the Republicans.

Posted by: BrandonInBatonRouge at September 12, 2008 10:01 AM (GFvRV)

26 Whoa!  The House huh.  I'll believe it when I see it.  I don't think that the House has every changed hands without the Senate also changing over.

I'm still hoping for the Congressional Republicans to come out of their defensive crouch and go on offense.

In 2006 you fired us and put the opposition Democrats in power.  Since then, gas prices have doubled, inflation has run wild and housing values have crashed.  Are you better off than you were two years ago?

We're the Republicans,  Give us another look.

Posted by: toby928 at September 12, 2008 10:03 AM (evdj2)

27

Not to be a downer, but I'll be ecsatatic if we pick up 3 seats in the House.  And lose less than 5 in the Senate.

Hell, do we even WANT to take the House back over (at this time)?  Nancy P is the best thing that ever happened to Republicans.  If we can get the numbers close there are enough moderate and/or terrified Dems in the House (mostly the latter) so that we can stop the really bad stuff.  And we couldn't accomplish shit even if we were in charge.

33 What's going to happen is that Ike is going to demolish Texas and a couple of nearby states, and the Dems and the media will go on 24/7 attack routine blaming Bush for this Act of God.  It'll be Katrina, times three, redux.

And it will be Bush's fault because he didn't build a thousand mile levee from Texas and all the way around Florida.  Which has nothing to do with the immigration debate, by the way.  Of course Bush should've built a wall that could hold back the fucking -ocean- in it's wildest fury across a thousand miles, but not one that can stop a single immigrant from crossing.

42 Where does this fear come from? It's not just the polls, they could be made to change given the opportunity. The problem the pro Dem pols see is the only real opportunities left to for a game change is the debates.
Does anyone think Obama can do better than a draw in one of the 3 debates?

Plus those same pols see Obama's campaign pulling up stakes in their states.
Obama made a huge strategic blunder wasting money in states he won't win trying to generate stories of his inevitability and trick McCain into wasting money. Now the locals pols have to cover for the wagons leaving town like losers. It would have been better if they were never there. It hurts local volunteer efforts badly as many were there only for Obama.

45 Here is an email I just sent to one of the top Left wing bloggers:

Let me explain why the election seems to be going the wrong way.

Remember in high school when the football player dragged you into the girls restroom and shoved your head into a toilet while the cheerleaders laughed at you? Remember how you swore you would make all those people pay, by sending them to reeducation camps for what they did to you?

Well that football player didn't do that to you because you were little, weak and helpless; he did that because you were a douchebag.

Of course being a bunch of lifelong douchebags the netroots naturally supported the biggest douchebag in the primaries. As long as he was running against Democrats who couldn't point out that Obama was a douchebag everything was OK and the netroot strategy prevailed.

However in the general election as soon as the public saw that "Obama got beaten up by a girl" the fact that he was a douchebag became obvious to everyone but you guys. Here is a clue: when somebody says in public "I won't be bullied!" all he is doing is identifying himself as the King of the Douchebags to all the people who actually can't be bullied; since they would never make a pathetic douchebag statement like that.

When Thomas Friedman - who is hardly what most people would identify as a pillar of male strength - has to give editorial advice to Obama to "Man up!" the election is already over.

Vladimer Putin was head of the KGB in the former Soviet Union, which president would he laugh at, the douchebag who "Won't be bullied" or the former POW who wouldn't go home early when given the chance?

See, life really is like high school; no douchebag ever gets to date the home coming queen.

You guys thought you were Darth Vader - turns out all you really were was Darph Bobo.

54 46: agreed. Rasmussen and others probably haven't switched their party ID baselines yet (I know that RM hasn't -- he says he does it once a month based on the last three month's results.) The campaigns want the most accurate, up-to-the-minute picture they can get for themselves and don't need to try to "even things out" like that. It must be looking disastrous.

If the guessed-at ID switch holds for the long term (i.e., the next six weeks), look for M/P's margin to grow and grow as the math catches up.

3. Both parties have their earmarks, but for now, Harry and Nancy's gang have even more of them.

66 I like Veteran's douchebag theory. Obama looks great to the nutroots who control the Dem party, but to normal people he is way underqualified and too far left. As well as being covered with the scent of extreme douchiness .
Say what you want about Bill Clinton (really!) but he is a crafty politician. He knew his hideous wife would appeal to the general electorate more than Capt. Bullshit does, and that's why he was so purple-faced and losing it during primary season.

67 Amnesty? Climate Fraud? Some of what he once promised should go away quietly...

I'm not as gung-ho on immigration as most conservatives are. But, if McCain puts forward legistlation that builds the fence and more to proteect the borders (1), separate of anything else. Then, later, goes forward with some sort of path to legalization separately (2). As long (1) happens, I could go along with (2).

I think climate fraud is working itself out. Farmers Almanac claims that global cooling is happening. Hardly any sunspots last month (bad news) and, I believe, the past 3 years have been cooler. The stupidity of the climate movement (carbon credits, etc) may continue, but it was never really about the climate. We all know that.

71 Most people have heard of the technique - pioneered by Adolf Hitler and developed by Joseph Goebbels of "The Big Lie"; that is, the technique of telling a Lie repeatedly and with so much conviction that people begin to believe it.

However very few people are aware that there is a Yin and Yang complement of the Big Lie; The Big Truth. The Big Truth is a statements which is absolutely true but is so horrifying in its implications that upon hearing it the vast majority of people will reject it: "That can't possibly be true." Thus Big Truths are circulated only among those few who are capable of handling their implications.

I will give an example of a Big Truth. On July 18, 1983 the Government of Vietnam awarded John Kerry as a "Hero of Communist Victory" for his actions on behalf of the communist cause in the Vietnam war. No other member of the protest movement in the United States was so awarded. It is evident that the Government of Vietnam believes that John Kerry - above and beyond anyone else - was responsible for US defeat and Communist victory in the Vietnam War. The horrifying implication of that Big Truth is that the people of the United States almost elected a certified Communist Traitor as President of the United States.

In this year's election there is another Big Truth which most people reject out of hand if they hear about it. Barack Obama has authored "The bill to end global poverty". Certainly that doesn't sound very bad - who wouldn't be in favor of ending global poverty? It is what the bill does that makes it a Big Truth. The bill authorizes the United Nations to directly tax individual Americans, the bill renounces the U.S. veto in the Security Council, the bill turns over world wide regulation of small arms to the U.N., and most importantly the bill authorizes the United Nations to use the tax money to raise a standing army to enforce its decisions on the helpless people of the world. In other words, the bill establishes a World wide Dictatorship by the U.N. The bill has passed both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, it (as of the time of this writing) in committee to work out differences between the two versions.

Hmmm.  Bill Clinton saw these numbers and raised the bar with his "easy win" talk.  I wonder if Billy has an epic fail in mind here for his "friend" Obama.

Very good point. I wondered why an astute pol like Clinton would say such a thing. I think you've nailed it.

Makes me gag to think that I'm on the same side as Bubba.

83 Veteran330: unless my English skills fail me (which they don't), Senate Bill S.2433 doesn't really do any of that.

Full text is here, and very short. A five minute read:
THOMAS text here.

Nowhere in that bill do I see the abrogation of taxing authority to the U.N., or any of the other shenanigans carped about in the aim.org link. It basically tells the President: "You have to look into trying to do this," which, good luck with that. I was unaware that Congress can pass legislation that basically orders the President to engage in certain foreign policy actions, then report back to Congress like a good widdle soldier. The President has no taxing authority, and therefore cannot "give" the U.N. any more money than the U.S. government is already collecting. Personally, I'd be kind of shocked if we weren't already giving away that much $ in aid to begin with.

84 The 1983 incident is really what the Swiftboat Vets were all about. If Kerry had just been a blow hard politician they would have never said anything about him. The S.V.T. decided not to use the 1983 incident because the higher ups figured the public wouldn't believe it - even though it was true.

Kerry and Obama are absurd clowns, in precisely the sense that John Gacy was a clown.

86 The key to understanding the global poverty bill is The phrase: "`Millennium Development Goals' means the goals set out in the United Nations Millennium Declaration, General Assembly Resolution 55/2 (2000)."

That is the U.N. resolution which requires that the developed nations contribute 7% of their GNP to the UN and has references to gun control. By the way, 7% of the GNP is roughly all of the profits of all of the businesses in the U.S.

OK, where to start.  Dudes intonation sucks, he's really flat.  WalMarts are not known for their "great acoustics".   He wimped out from the upper register, probably because he is not drunk enough.

On the plus side, if you take the outer slide housing off the slide, you have a GREAT blow dart gun to hunt hobos with.

Just sayin......

Not that I've ever done that.

Much.

89 Besides all the leftist media brainwashing, we will also be up against massive election fraud--probably much worse even than in 2000 and 2004. After all, their standardbearer, the Obamanation, cut his political teeth in the most corrupt political machine in the country!

90 I think Hillary's PUMA's will be dropping dimes like crazy on the Obama fraud efforts.  They will not be denied their revenge.  Video cell phones will make this the most well documented and easily prosecuted fraud in the history of the nation.

I actually welcome massive fraud efforts by the Obama campaign.  It can't be  hidden as well this time due to technological advances.  The more fraud, the more the general public will distrust the hard left democrats.
