| Is Obama Stepping into Another Trap? The newest ad showcasing their hard line includes unflattering footage of McCain at a hearing in the early '80s, wearing giant glasses and an out-of-style suit, interspersed with shots of a disco ball, a clunky phone, an outdated computer and a Rubix Cube. "1982, John McCain goes to Washington," an announcer says over chirpy elevator music. "Things have changed in the last 26 years, but McCain hasn't. "He admits he still doesn't know how to use a computer, can't send an e-mail, still doesn't understand the economy, and favors two hundred billion in new tax cuts for corporations, but almost nothing for the middle class," it says. It shows video of McCain getting out of a golf cart with former President George H.W. Bush and closes with a photo of him standing with the current President Bush at the White House. "After one president who was out of touch, we just can't afford more of the same." Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said the campaign was not making an issue of the 72-year-old McCain's age, but the time he's spent in Washington.I see The first is against Obama. "In 2005, Barack Obama came to Washington. 143 work days later, he got bored with that job and decided to run for president. He doesn't have much to show for those 143 days, except maybe a willingness to take money from your pocket and spend it on pork barrel projects in his own district." "Since taking office, Obama has voted for nearly a billion dollars in pork barrel projects, including $1 million for his wife's employer and $100,000 to this guy." (quick shot of Father Pfleger saying something dumb) In the same amount of time, John McCain never requested pork. He never has. "Can we trust Obama to bring change? After all, it only took him 143 days to embrace Washington's free-spending ways. John McCain has resisted for 25 years." "Consistent. Principled. Country First." Obviously the language would need some tightening. It would be great to get someone like Fred Thompson to narrate it. Another potential response below: "Barack Obama promises to bring change to Washington, and yet his first major act as a presidential candidate was making a Washington insider who's been there for 30 years his running mate." (Images of 1973, including early photos of Biden, some Nixon and people wearing horrible 70s clothes.) "One of Biden's early votes was against the Alaska oil pipeline, which now provides the country with **% of our current domestic oil needs. Since then, Biden and Barack Obama have voted against offshore oil production and other forms of domestic energy production." (Montage: gas lines, high prices, etc) "As governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin worked to increase domestic energy production and lower our dependence on foreign oil. She understands how important this issue is to our national security, our economy and your pocketbook." "Barack Obama and Joe Biden promise change, but their energy policies would bring more of the same." "McCain/Palin. Energy. Independence." Again, language would need to be tightened, but it would highlight the very real difference between the two candidates. It's interesting (and by that I mean hilarious) that almost every avenue of attack Obama tries to open up on McCain/Palin comes back to bite him. Ed at Hot Air suggests hitting Obama on the fact that he's never fought the corruption that surrounded him in Chicago politics, while both McCain and Palin showed political courage in that regard. I can't wait to see what Obama comes up with next. Update - Just thought of another potential ad. In front of a slide show of Obama at fundraisers, surrounded by celebrities, put these words on the screen:“It's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,"Then, as pictures of McCain and Palin at rallies in rural America show, play the following bit from Palin's speech: in small towns, we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they’re listening and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening. (APPLAUSE) No, we tend to prefer candidates who don’t talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco. (APPLAUSE) As for my running mate, you can be certain that wherever he goes and whoever is listening John McCain is the same man.Fade out to the McCain/Palin logo. Comments1

Witness the power of the OODA loop. McCain is cycling faster, and is now on Obama's six, and below his tail. O has lost sight of his opponent and is now trying to jink. Too late. McCain is waaaaay inside O's loop, and any move he makes now he can cut him off. Sarah has made a perfect wizzo to McCain's pilot. She ripped the mask off of O. McCain is now going to put the heat seeker to him. Beautiful.

I would like to see an ad focusing on Obama and the corruption angle.
Also, enough with the computer crap. When does a president or senator do their own word processing? Also, who ever heard of a president sending email? Another consideration is McCain has problems with his arm mobility, remember? You really think he can even type? This crap about the outdated suit, phone, and computer is offensive to a lot of people who dressed that way when it was in style and used that equipment when it was new. And we fucking vote. Is Obama aware of the fact that the 65+ crowd turns out with the highest percentage and raw numbers for voting?
I guess he's going to get all the "youth" vote. All four of those dumb-ass pot-heads. Plus, I would wager that McCain would have difficulty using a computer given the fact that both his arms were broken. Heck, he has trouble shaking people's hands. Who is this ad targeted at?
Because if it's targeted at the younger voter, it tells me something about the need to buttress this block of voters. I thought he had that sewn up? It also seems to me that he is alienating the older voters in the country by telling them they are worthless cause they can't email. Stupid ad. Although I like all of those ideas, Ed's is probably the one McCain would go with, though it almost doesn't matter. Obama started losing this race when he went into a defensive mode and started acting like a typical pol at the end of June. Going negative is Old Politics, which means they well be less effective for him. Which McCain could point out in an ad contrasting his reform cred with BO's.

When Joe Biden joined the Senate on November 7, 1972, John McCain was in the Hanoi Hilton. That should be the response ad. And what ever happened to the "I was 8 years old..." so Ayers was blowing shit up was irrelevant? 1982 was the year 21 BHO, so it's irrelevant. I think they're trying to bait Team McCain into talking about how long Biden's been in the senate to nullify the effect of their presidential nominee going after our veep nominee. Some really good ideas here, but the response should not reference Biden in any way. Posted by: Andy at September 12, 2008 10:37 AM (C3mTI) 33

McCain has already answered this, he just needs to make an ad of it.
He has the footage, you saw it at the convention. Despite being part of the Reagan Revolution he bucked Reagan on putting Marines in Beirut. He was right. Forward 24 years, McCain bucked the CW and supported the Surge. He was right again. McCain......Maverick from Day 1 and still a Maverick. Change where it's needed, not change for the sake of change. Posted by: Rocks at September 12, 2008 11:01 AM (Q1lie) 38
The way to really get in Obama's head right now would be to cut an ad linking him with Resko and Chicago corruption while contrasting his record not against McCain's but against Palin's. That would drive him nuts and could prompt him to make a response ad against Palin which would be stupid for him. Also Slublog you cannot have the energy ad you proposed without including footage of Obama admitting that he thinks it's ok if gas prices go to $5 a gallon he's just disappointed it happened so fast. In fact how about an ad where you start with the audio of that while showing a frog in a pot of water. Then you link all the anti-drilling stuff he and Biden and the Dems have been doing the past 30 years while showing the water heating up on the frog. Maybe intersperse images of someone filling up there tank while the numbes just keep shooting up and up, a family at a table doing the checkbook looking concerned. All the while flashing Dem congressional votes against drilling, against nuclear. Harry Reid talking about how oil and coal are killing us. More votes against expanded energy. Ending back on the frog now in boiling water and repeating Obama's line about being disappointed the price went up so fast. This could be used as a template for congressional races as well. Posted by: brak at September 12, 2008 11:13 AM (Iyd1m) 43
I thought about the Biden response, but then we'd just be making the same mistake Obama is - attaking the underling (yeah, I know the verbaige of the ad was attaking Obama's choice, but come on). I like the first reponse. And, I'd make sure I had a suitable response airing in senior heavy markets. But I'd be subtle, something like "Barack Obama makes fun of those who have built this country. And, he kills puppies." Posted by: headhunt23 at September 12, 2008 11:14 AM (OMCBg) 44
Also an energy ad could be built around the Dem's retarded "We can't drill our way out of this" talking point. Show them not allowing drilling, then show no nuclear, no clean coal, no natural gas culminating with the line "Nobody says we can drill our way out of our dependence on foreign oil but we can't wish our way out of it either". Posted by: Big E at September 12, 2008 11:15 AM (uw1/g) 45
Yeah, the second ad is the weaker of the two. There's got to be a way to show that Obama undermined his 'change' message by picking a guy who's been in DC longer than John McCain.

When did he ever stand up to any of the slime around him? Your pastor preached crazed race conspiracy theories for 20 years, what did you do? But he's not running. I read somewhere about the failure of Biden as a leader. He has been in the Senate for what, 30 yrs or so? He has been passed over as caucus leader (going by memory now) three times--twice by senators with less seniority. He has run in the D primaries twice with EPIC FAIL. Even his own state gave him only 3 and 1% of the vote. He does have committee chairs, but those are positions of seniority and not merit. So every time he has had a chance to get voted into a leadership position BY HIS OWN PARTY, he has been soundly rejected. Posted by: Obama lin Biden at September 12, 2008 12:17 PM (Thqto) 71
You want a winning message? Lower energy prices put more money in your pocket than a few minor changes to our 3,000 page tax code. More money in your pocket after you pay the electric bill. More money in your pocket after you pay the gas bill. More money in your pocket after you fill up the family truckster. Lower energy prices mean lower costs for Americas factories. Lower costs for America's farmers and ranchers. Lower costs for the millions of Americans who bring those goods to market. Lower costs for the shopkeeper and restaurant owner. Lower costs mean lower prices every time you go to the grocery store - and more money in your pocket at the end of each and every day. John McCain wants to lower your taxes too, but he doesn't think you should be stuck waiting until the IRS sends you a check in the middle of April to have more money in your pocket. http://www.newsweek.com/id/148980 This is the link that Obama's ad lifted it's idea from inre McCain being out of touch with tech. Posted by: CDR M at September 12, 2008 12:38 PM (WGcw3) 77
I hate to be all bandwagon, but the first thing that came to mind when I read this post was "Why don't they hire this Slublog and pay him a great deal of money?"

I agree, the obama drug use point is a bad idea,
and will backfire. Posted by: Tony LaVanway at September 12, 2008 12:44 PM (aHH1C) 79
Okay, here's my 2 cents.
What ever adds they run sticking it to Obama it should be Palin's voice. Give her the green light and turn her loose. Barry will have 2 choices, ignore them and look weak or go after her and commit suicide.

McCain commercial: "Dust" (Dawn; Long, straight road through an Arizona desert; sound effect of blowing wind) VO: Folks in this part of the land have been clinging to their guns for 150 years. They think they've got a pretty good reason. (Rickety gas station, abandoned; squeak of sign blowing in breeze) VO: Of course, some people would rather tell them whether they should bear arms or not. (Volvo with Obama '08 and "Bush Lied, People Died" bumperstickers, bike mount on roof, drives down road, slows for tire blowout) VO: Where they come from, guns are a cultural signifier of ignorance. Where they come from, breakfast is a mocha latte and a Starbucks banana nut muffin. (slow closeup of leering, drooling Hills Have Eyes mutant) VO: Out here, guns are for protection. Out here, breakfast is a little less...sophisticated. (Obama tron kicking tire in disgust.) VO: Don't be breakfast. I'm John McCain, and I approve this message. (Scream, fade to black.) Excellent Slublog!
This is an odd angle of attack from Barry. Many older people don't know how to use a computer very well. Its not like Obama is going to be sitting at a computer all the time either. What is his argument? "Hey vote for me cause we'll text you ...at 3am with news that already leaked." Posted by: POTL at September 12, 2008 12:51 PM (mD4t/) 82

Show a cockpit of an A4 Skyhawk. VO: In his young days, McCain flew these sophisticated high-tech machines. Show Obama and Scarlett Johansen emailing each other. VO: Obama knows how to send emails. Obama: not ready to lead a high-tech nation. Posted by: Tushar at September 12, 2008 01:36 PM (ZqHH5) 86
Here's one for a web ad:
[picture of "The One"] Voice over: "Barack Obama says that John McCain 'doesn't know how to use a computer' and 'can't send an e-mail'." "You know who CAN use a computer?" Folks, McCain needs to hold something in reserve for when the media brings up the Keating Five.
Posted by: Timothy Watson at September 12, 2008 02:43 PM (O0YsD) 91
So McCain doesn't know how to use a computer. Does Obama know how to fly a jet fighter? Who exactly is more technically skilled here? Is playing Solitaire on your PC equivalent to managing electromagnetic countermeasures against North Vietnamese surface-to-air missiles?

I´m working with the German War Graves Commission ( Kriegsgraeber ) and frequently cooperate with USAAMAE. We have succeeded in sending a couple of your boys home from the battlefields of WWII. The Red and Blue are hanging from my office walls. If America prefers Obama over Vietnam Vet McCain I´ll roll them in and forget about God´s Own Country.
