We all know that Olbermann is overreacting in this quote; that's his shtick and he's sticking with it. Fine, whatever. But I urge you go to back and actually look at that video again. Not the one of Olbermann, but of the actual "graphic" video that was aired at the RNC.

I think you will agree there is nothing graphic about it. You do not see a single image of a human being even suffering, must less killed. (There is one quick cut of someone being dragged out on a stretcher, but that's not from the 9/11 footage that Keith is referring to. It appears to be from one of the '90s embassy bombings.) All you see is pictures of damaged and destroyed objects. There wasn't even a single image used of a jumper. Are these snippets of video unpleasant to recall? Of course. But graphic? Not a chance.

So we've put Keith's BS out of the way. That's not really the point of my post though. Instead, I want you to think beyond Keith's immediate statement. There was nothing graphic shown here, but then, neither was there anything particularly graphic shown on 9/11 itself. Sure, we saw tiny bits of video of people jumping, and some still photos of jumpers in mid-air that were as close-up as the photographers could manage at the time. But true graphic material? The number of instances of those can be counted on the fingers of a single hand, and even those were printed/aired once and then never shown again.

Now, it's generally accepted by journalists and historians that the WTC attack was the single most well-documented, photographed, and filmed/videotaped event in all of human history. After all, it happened on a beautiful weekday morning in the media capital of the world. The infrastructure and the personnel were all less than five miles away from Ground Zero at most, and a decent percentage of them were headquartered literally just a few thousand feet away.

So, think about it for just one moment. Where, exactly, are the truly graphic images? This was not just a day where a couple of buildings got knocked down. It was a day where roughly 2600 human beings were killed, most in some of the most gruesome fashions possible. So gruesome, in fact, that we're not even certain today of the status of roughly two dozen people that were in the area at the time. But just about the only piece of "graphic" evidence that was ever published or aired was a single image of a severed hand in the New York Daily News on 9/12, and even that was only after much debate by its editors.

At this point, you may be asking, "So what?" Well, the point is that this video footage, these photographs, of the most horrific atrocities perpetuated against human beings on that day, all exist. Tons of them. Unimaginable gore. And the MSM, The Deciders, the Manhattan media elite, made the decision right then and there, as that horrible day was still progressing, not to show them to the American people. Not that day, not the next day, not ever. They're all locked away.

To be fair, a small percentage of the editors and executives involved in making these decisions wanted to hide them away on grounds of simple taste, that because they would be completely unacceptable to air or print any other day, likewise would they be unacceptable on that day, purely because they would make many readers and viewers physically sick. And that is a legitimate argument to make. But for the overwhelming majority of these Deciders, their reasoning was elitist and ideological. They chose not to make that sort of information available to the public because they were worried that if the public saw those images of what was really happening on the ground, the public would want revenge. The public would become bloodthirsty and call for war. And of course, to a Manhattan liberal, that would be completely unacceptable. They had to protect the world from us.
Thus was the decision made that no images of injured and killed humans would ever be allowed to see the light of day. Just too risky to get the already-panicked Flyover Public to start calling for blind attacks on some nebulous "them," don't you know.

And it worked. I have seen essays published in the past (which I'm sorry to say I cannot find at the moment) directly asking the question as to whether Americans as a whole would not have remained much more united over these intervening years, if only they had known the true extent as to how much suffering had occurred at the WTC and Pentagon on that day, the depths to which the evil had actually sunk. If only the worst parts of it had never been left to our imaginations, instead of being laid out on the table right from the beginning.

I think everyone here needs to be asking themselves that question as well.

(And for those who may have the two most obvious questions: I know because I used to be a member of the MSM in New York City. It's common knowledge there. And if you're wondering if I might be overstating the case anyway, I urge you to go to Google and run an image search on pretty much any overseas disaster or bombing that's happened in the last ten years or so. With very little effort, you'll find plenty of images of the victims of those sorts of incidents, usually straight off the websites of the local media of those areas. People that are bloodied, people that are dead and contorted, severed limbs, you name it. There, you're allowed to see what really happened and decide for yourself what the proper reaction is. But in the United States, in an act of evil that one of the most heinous ever known to mankind, The Deciders decided. And they decided you couldn't be trusted to know what actually took place there. For no other reason than that you might react in a way that they would have personally disliked.

And that should anger you almost as much as the original event itself.

I'll say it one more time. Imagine how much of the "us vs. them", "right vs. left" divide that's taken over this country in the last seven years, might have at least been toned down a bit, if only we'd been allowed access to the complete story.

The original thread is titled "I Hate 9/11" and we can only guess at the context, but judging by this post and these few comments, plus liberal tropes, I'd say they hate 9/11 because they see Americans using it to celebrate patriotism and what they see as jingoism, American exceptionalism, etc. etc. all of which is anathema to liberals, who believe America is evil, that the world would be better off if America were impotent and not a super power, who don't think America is special or moral or basically a good country, either its government nor its citizens, and most 9/11 celebrations celebrate what it is to be American and what is good and strong and eternal about the country.
