1 Charlie Gibson was a tool. I wanted to slap his nose-glasses off his face.

2 Any chance we can get a link to the video at some point?

Posted by: BTM at September 11, 2008 07:06 PM (v0dke)

3 Was it just me, or was the video edited by the Audiovisual Club at Cornhole High School? It came across patchy as hell.

Posted by: Jim62sch at September 11, 2008 07:08 PM (ubHgw)

4 I think she came out of it pretty well, despite the fairly rough nature of the interview.  I don't think that it was a "Grand Slam," though.

Posted by: tomthebaker at September 11, 2008 07:09 PM (IVMdm)

5 It does look like they backed off of the "exact words" thing, anyway, even including the You Tube clip of her statement at the church.

Posted by: kteemac at September 11, 2008 07:10 PM (pLTLS)

6 Is that the same "interview voice" he uses all the time? If so, someone should point out that talking low and slow does nothing to make you look more intelligent.

7 I'd be interested to see the stuff they edited out.  I'm sorry but journalists are basically untrustworthy. They can't help themselves.

8 Andi threatened Charlie that if he did go in the tank with the interview, he wouldn't allow Charlie to be his buttboy.

She nailed it for me with this comment:

Our rights are God Given.    Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.   Got that not a government mandate, not something that can be taken away.

10 I'm sorry but journalists are basically untrustworthy. They can't help themselves.

Some are not...for example, I think Brit Hume is pretty scrupulously fair. Or have I drunk Fox News Koolaid?

Posted by: Jim62sch at September 11, 2008 07:13 PM (ubHgw)

11 Yeah, I liked how they chose to edit her in mid-word.

Posted by: Joanie at September 11, 2008 07:16 PM (Yyy1m)

12 People that are fair are anti-journalists.  Some of them just happen to be employed in the media.  The term journalism has become synonymous with dshonesty.  I'm sorry it has, but it has.

Posted by: The Obvious at September 11, 2008 07:16 PM (1g+FW)

13 Did Gibson ask her about McSame's addiction to Ambien?

Was Pontius Palin asked why she cut funding for teen pregnancies and for the disabled?

Any questions about Palin's involvement in Big Oil?

Creationism?

Dinosaurs?

Jews?

Charles Gibson and ABC News owe Gov. Palin and America an apology for falsely attributing your news organization's own fabrications as her quotes in order to misreport her position on America in war that aligns perfectly with Abraham Lincoln's, being Lincoln's own statement.

There is a reason that Congressional ratings aren't worth spit, and a reason why America no longer trusts massive media sources including ABC News. DISHONESTY!

Thanks to immediately correct ABC News errors on record.

15 Every Republican who does an interview should insist on getting a raw transcript of the source of any of their "exact words" that are quoted back at them, and make their own video of the full interview to post, unedited, to expose the lying bastards in the press.

Posted by: bgates at September 11, 2008 07:18 PM (CFjXn)

16 Gibson isn't that bad. He isn't out to get people just because they are Republicans. He hasn't drank a whole lot of the  koolaid. He's no winger, by any stretch, but he's not an Olberman either.

Posted by: XBradTC at September 11, 2008 07:18 PM (GIPhT)

17 Shut the fuck up, Gibson.  She's not going to say outright that we should cross the border into Pakistan.

Posted by: Adam R. at September 11, 2008 07:19 PM (fWeGD)

18 I saw both segments. The first was kinda shaky, and she was not as convincing as I'd hoped she'd be. Gibson was tough, but the questions were fair.

The second segment was much better. They had a video of her speaking in church, and it gave the full context of her words, which she clarified for Gibson. She is much better when she talks about subjects close to her heart.

Posted by: lmg at September 11, 2008 07:19 PM (A/vgC)

19 I wonder if Charlie tried to get samples of her DNA to send to Andi.

21 I would say that today was a solid single or maybe even a double.  Palin definitely didn't harm herself and I think she bolstered her credentials.

I view it as there are now a couple of people on base after this for the interviews tomorrow where she has a chance to knock in a few more runners for 1 or 2 more points in the poll.  The interview slightly changes the race for the better if it even changes anything at all.

Gibson is still a condescending jerk though.

22 PALIN DECLARES WAR ON RUSSIA!!

Good, I been wanting to kick those bastards' asses since I was stationed in Germany from 1985 to 1991.

23 I think she came out of it pretty well, despite the fairly rough nature of the interview.  I don't think that it was a "Grand Slam," though.

It didn't need to be a Grand Slam, mainly thanks to the MSM itself. They've spent so much time making Palin out to be some sort of ignorant lunatic, that all she had to do was be composed and not melt down on camera in order to impress the general public.

In short, she did fine. The left (who are already out to get her) will cherry pick a few things here and there to continue their campaign of self-inflicted hysteria; those of us over here on the sane side will nitpick a line or two that she could have done better;  and everyone in the mushy middle will see it and think "Hey, she seemed like a rational human being to me. They were telling me she was a monster!"

To the extent the mushy middle is watching at all, of course. These days, what does World News get in terms of viewers, three or four million people? And most of them are either old and set in their ways (straight-ticket types) or news junkies who also already know who they're going to vote for.  Our reactions don't much matter. Like I said, all she had to to was show up and not collapse in a puddle of tears at Gibson's questioning, and she wins by default.

24 Cornhole High School. I think my brother wrestled there.

25

I haven't seen it yet, I'm waiting on the whole thing, but I'd like to see elaboration on the Georgia thing. Is she saying, "Georgia ought to be in NATO, so that we can protect them by going to war with Russia if needed?" Or is it, "If Georgia IS in NATO, we are in fact obligated to go to war" (true), and thus (unspoken).... let's be wary about putting Georgia and friends in NATO?

Anyone shed any light on which? I'm kinda hoping on the latter.

Posted by: Andrew X at September 11, 2008 07:25 PM (ne9bG)

26 I'm sorry to say that I thought that she seemed a bit too agressive which I believe is a function of her wanting to appear to be a strong woman.  Disappointed a bit.  Not terrible but she gave the "bad guys" some ammo.

Posted by: Glum at September 11, 2008 07:25 PM (7iAzE)

27 Not her usual "she is just too good to be true" performance, but competent and confident.  Her back-and-forth on the Bush Doctrine question was good, as it was clearly a trap question - either agree with Bush or come off seeming like you don't know enough.

Definitely not a softball interview. He kept coming back for the kind of specifics that no world leader would provide "exactly what would you do" or "is it our right" type things.  She answered fine, but would be better off being a bit more aggressive in the reply, including pointing out that being overly specific on a hypothetical can be interpreted as a sort of threat and that's the kind of thing we need to avoid.

Posted by: Vern at September 11, 2008 07:26 PM (5tcj3)

28 They will probably air the worst stuff first since that will be the most watched.

Posted by: asl at September 11, 2008 07:26 PM (r11nM)

29 Charlie said Georgia might be joining NATO and then we would have to defend them and asked if that was okay.  She basically said that was the deal if you were  a member of NATO I think.

Posted by: TRO at September 11, 2008 07:26 PM (q4WFG)

30 Ouch, going to Cornhole high is bad enough, wrestling there??? Fuck that shit, I wonder if they serve tossed salad?

32 Video cameras are cheap. Every Republican who is interviewed should have a camera on a tripod taking in the whole scene.

That way, there is unedited footage available to refute any misrepresentations by journalists.

Posted by: Evil Pundit at September 11, 2008 07:28 PM (//eLA)

33 I think Charlie might have been more respectful if the McCain campaign had insisted that Driller be in the room at all times, just out of view of the camera.

36 I thought she was a tad shaky in the first segment, too. She didn't know what the Bush Doctrine was, which bothered me a little.

Our ABC channel went off air in the middle of the hurricane segment, so I didn't see the second part. That timing was kind of weird. I was starting to have conspiracy thoughts, but apparently our tv problems were only at the local level.

Posted by: stace at September 11, 2008 07:32 PM (JO0c/)

37 Charlie Gibson.  What a condescending jerk.  We just had illustrated for us the difference between an elitist journalism and a real person who loves and respects their country.

Posted by: gbs at September 11, 2008 07:33 PM (ZH503)

38 Her back-and-forth on the Bush Doctrine question was good, as it was clearly a trap question - either agree with Bush or come off seeming like you don't know enough.

On this point, I have to disagree, at least a bit. It was unquestionably a trap. The problem is that the trap wasn't whether she agrees with it or not, so much as a demand to know "What IS the Bush Doctrine, Ms. Palin? Can you answer that question?" And it was asked in the manner of an arrogant high-school teacher who was just in the mood to embarrass a student he didn't like in front of the entire class.

And she didn't actually answer that question.

Whether she was weaving and bobbing to avoid being pinned into a corner on whether she agrees with it or not, or actually DIDN'T know, I can't say. But mark my words: That's one of the main spin points the Obamatons are going to focus on over the next news cycle: "Palin couldn't define the Bush Doctrine! Unfit for office!"

Posted by: RajivVindaloo at September 11, 2008 07:35 PM (Rn2+D)

39

I'm sure when they interview Obama they will ask him if he believes in socialism for our country with this EXACT quote:

This is the moment when we must build on the wealth that open markets have created, and share its benefits more equitably. Trade has been a cornerstone of our growth and global development. But we will not be able to sustain this growth if it favors the few, and not the many"

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle at September 11, 2008 07:35 PM (NrzzM)

40 Gibson WAS being an asshole, but he also has a lot of pressure on him from the left to not be perceived as going easy on her.

Posted by: stace at September 11, 2008 07:35 PM (JO0c/)

41 Bush doesn't even adhere to the Bush Doctrine these days, so that question was a semi-gotcha. She handled it well, however.

There is more to come on Nightline tonight (11:30pm), more at 6:30pm Friday, and a special program, I forget when.

Keep in mind: Even Olympic athletes sometimes fall short, but they don't quit. They get up and try harder.

42

Hmmmm. Answering my own #25. Palin does say Georgia and Ukraine should be in NATO, and that, yes we would be obligated to defend them if so. The latter is obvious.

I have to disagree on the former. Unless our European allies are prepared to DOUBLE their defense spending, and act like they are willing to defend Western Civilization, which at this point I put up there with me meeting the tooth fairy on a probablility scale, we have ZERO business expanding NATO at all, and a reasonable argument for scaling it back or scrapping it entirely. The only thing worse than an unguarded flank is a flank that is guarded by someone who swears you are secure there, I promise, promise.......and then will fold like wet cardboard or even turn around and make a deal with the adversary. Europe does not have the will to fight, certainly not in any global or civilizational sense, and as long as they don't, whatever military they DO have is as good as useless.

So I must disagree with m'learned gentle-lady from Alaska that front.

Posted by: Andrew X at September 11, 2008 07:36 PM (ne9bG)

43 Saw part of it. I found it annoying she kept calling him Charlie. I thought she was clever how she didn't say YES, I'LL INVADE PAKISTAN, but said it indirectly. Of course the libs will argue she didn't 'get' the question that's why she didn't answer it.
Let's see what she DIDN'T DO:
- refer to McCain as the Vice-Presdient.
- misstate her faith and need to be corrected by Gibson
- say Romney probably would have been a better pick
etc.

I didn't see it, but that's probably a good sign that she was about right.

Or maybe they will ask Obama how he expects to do this (EXACT QUOTE)

This is the moment when we must come together to save this planet. Let us resolve that we will not leave our children a world where the oceans rise and famine spreads and terrible storms devastate our lands."

Because that just makes perfect sense.

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle at September 11, 2008 07:38 PM (NrzzM)

47 It's funny: some here say she was too aggressive, others say she was not aggressive enough... It means she was just fine: she just needed to show independents or conservative Democrats that she is not an idiot. And it was more than enough.

48 She didn't hurt herself, and she came across as someone who is competent to be Veep.  You knew Gibson would hit her with some tough questions and she didn't flinch or hem and haw.  Good interview, good first unscripted appearence.

50 Relax.  She did fine.  Gibson sounded like a jerk, and worse his mangling of her prayer makes him look not only unfair but anti-religion as well.   This will play well for Palin...for ABC, not so much.

Amen, Andrew, amen. Really, what is the point of NATO now? The fucks won't even fight in Afghanistan. We ought to pull out of it, and the UN, too. The only way to get the Euroweenies to step up and defend themselves is to pull them off our tit.

Posted by: Jim62sch at September 11, 2008 07:42 PM (ubHgw)

52 To prevent war, be strong. That, in essence, is NATO article 5.

If liberals weren't suck fucking morons, they'd realize, "I'm not sure," to the question of what would you do if Russia attacks a NATO country increases the odds of them doing so.

NATO means what is says and if you attack 1 NATO country, you attack all, is likely to prevent war.

Russia doesn't want to take on all of NATO. The best they could do barring some type of first strike masterstroke (which is why we must maintain the ability to have a strong second strike capability) is fight to a horrible draw. And Russia knows that.

They also know they could lose, big time, even if they caused some NATO countries to lose also, there may be countries who make it through hostilities in a better position than Russia.

Posted by: Christoph at September 11, 2008 07:42 PM (hawOV)

53 I don't get this whole thing. Just the other day, Jonathan Alter said that they'd be keeping Sarah silent, and allowing no media access, until sometime after the VP debate, and it was the job of the media, and the public, to DEMAND that the press be given access to her.

Evidently the media, and the public, did their job.

(Or else Jonathan Alter was talking out of his cornhole.)

Posted by: notropis at September 11, 2008 07:42 PM (briex)

54 This is basically an attempt to start a whisper campaign.

I think the public is smart enough to say, "I'll want to hear what she says exactly for myself."

57 I'll be glad when Sarah gets the experience to be able to sneer back at the journalists. Maggie Thatcher was brilliant at that, and I'm sure Sarah will get the knack for it. Even Bush learned how to stick the knife into journalists with a smile on his face, and he's always been only half-competent in interviews.

These sucker of the cock journalists should lobby to have a new set of Miranda rights put into the Fifth Amendment, so that before being interviewed/interrogated he or she (conservatives) must be told of their new Fifth Amendment right.

I thought she did well.  I wonder what the etiquette is for telling an interviewer that his question is insipid.  Seriously.  When Mr. Gobson asked whether she would approve incursions into Waziristan, what could any candidate say other than "what are the facts supporting such an incursion?"

Waziristan is essentially a locally governed, autonomous region with no real ties to the Pakistani government.  What is she supposed to say?  "I'll approve such incursions in any situation"?  "I'll never approve such incursions no matter what."  Both would sound stupid but Gibson didn't provide any detail in his question that would allow a serious yes or no answer.

Anyone here who's an attorney knows how this game is played in depositions.  The attorney conducting the deposition asks some broad question that could go any of a hundred ways depending upon unstated hypothetical facts and then laments that he's not receiving direct, detailed answers.  Kinda sad.  O'Reilly actually does a much better job because he allows a flow to develop between him and the interviewee.

As for Gibson, I'm disappointed.  He had gained so many cool points with me back in April 2004 when he got Kerry all hot and bothered about about his Congressional testimony during Vietnam (the Jenjis Khan bit).

How will that play out for their "Bush-lipstick-meme"?  Oh, I'm don't doubt they're going to do it, and repeat both of them one right after the other.

Also, since I haven't seen it other than the preview clips did they keep the same camera angle as the preview clips?  If so, it's a camera trick to dehumanize her.  Hell, even criminals get a better camera angle from Dateline.

71 #64

In a deposition, questioners can ask just about anything they want and the witness pretty much has to respond.  Their counsel can object for the record, but generally the witness must respond.

In court it is a different matter.  The witness can be directed to not answer a question if counsel objects and that objection is sustained.

A You-tube side by side comparison of questions Gibson asked to Obama and to Palin would be hilarious.

Just use video of Gibson’s questions and enough of a head shot establishing Obama or Palin. Say 10 sec. or so between the comparison.

Imagine the difference in tone and style in how Gibson addressed each.  Be even better if he asked each questions about somehow related topics.

Hilarious.

78 She pointed her finger too much and leaned forwrad too much.  Not relaxed.  Her hair was a bad choice (yes, really) and that brown outfit.  Who is picking these clothes?  And, yes, they matter.  You are selling the whole candidate, not just some legs and some glasses.  As much as that might excite the morons here.

79 I'm listening to bits and pieces of it on the radio.  It's obnoxious with Gibson asks her a question and she answers it and he asks the same question again and she gives the same answer and he slightly rephrases it and asks it a third time and she gives the same answer. This was the question about whether she thought she was prepared fo the job.

Also brought out is the fact that no one from the meda or left is attakcing Cohen for his stupid remarks and another congresscritter for a similar God is on our side reference.

I don't know why people including some of you morons, call Obama a great orator.I don't know why anyone calls his brillant. He can't think straight nor consistently or articualte what the hell his position is most of the time.

81 What I really want to know is when Driller is going to appear on The View or Ellen Degeneris, like the spouses of the other candidates.

Actually I think they're afraid Driller is so manly that he will turn Ellen straight again, and impregnate all of the women in the studio audience solely with his testosterone-rich aura.

86 I didn't know it was called the Bush doctrine. I call it we will do what we need to do to protect ourselves no matter what it is. It is bullshit for Gibson to keep asking her the same question over and over again when she answered it. I know he wanted a yes and no answer but tough. The answer she gave was clear enough. For her to claim he was lost in her "blizzard of words" was assholish.

92 That said, it’s pretty clear she doesn’t know what he means by the Bush Doctrine and can’t answer the Pakistan question in anything but platitudes about stopping Islamic extremism. Even the gimme about the 9/11 hijackers’ motivations comes out garbled: She’s trying to make the basic neocon point that terrorism is a problem caused by political repression and solved by democracy, but it sounds as if she’s trying to patch it together from mental index cards, which … may in fact be what she was doing. Or maybe she was just nervous. Or thrown by Gibson’s demeanor. Not good, whichever it is, but 99% of the people who love her won’t care and the 1% who do can probably be brought around with a good interview tomorrow and, especially, a good debate with Biden. Now, tell me how brilliant she was and how wrong I am.

I didn't know it was called the Bush doctrine.

And it's not completely clear what the Bush doctrine is - is it that we'll treat terrorist-harboring states as terrorists themselves or that we'll pre-emptively attacks states based on their threat even it's not imminent?

And it's not even like the Bush administration follows either one consistently.

"Well as you know, for about sixty years we have an agreement with fellow members to defend them should they be attacked, but if things get a bit hairy I think we should keep in mind that the agreement is just a piece of paper."

I wonder what the etiquette is for telling an interviewer that his question is insipid.  Seriously.

"I'm sorry, I don't know how to answer that question; it's too stupid."

Anyone here who's an attorney knows how this game is played in depositions.  The attorney conducting the deposition asks some broad question that could go any of a hundred ways depending upon unstated hypothetical facts and then laments that he's not receiving direct, detailed answers.

In a deposition, the deponent's lawyer says "objection; calls for speculation" (or just "objection as to form" depending on your state's rules).  Then, if the deponent has been well prepared (or can feel the lawyer kicking him/her in the shins under the table), the deponent responds, "I'm sorry, I can't answer that without speculating."

ABC and Charlie Gibson are going to come off as asses.  Charlie was condescending and the editing sucked and no doubt her unedited answer that will ultimately make the net will be very favorable to her.

She came off well.  Not great, but good.  She will get better.  There is not there here.

No minds were changed and since McPalin is in the lead that is a good thing.

In fact, it may be great because the media will look even more liberal when objective people see how Charlie acted over and over again.

I say this was a big point for the good guys.

104 There are many ways to Depth Charge an interview.  Use totally inappropriate lighting, such as masculine vs. feminine lighting, use awkward camera angles, which enhance/distort masculine vs. feminine posing.  Any decent photographer will know what I am talking about. Throw in soft focus vs. enhanced/cranked up digital sharpness image will make anyone look bad.  There is ALOT of digital manipulation that can be done in Real Time to sabotage a visual or audio.  If Charlie Gibson used a teleprompter he is a fucking punk.

114 The other thing to realize with foreign policy is that she has to not only show familiarity with the issue, but with McCain's stance on said issue.  What is McCain's take on the Bush Doctrine?  Has he supported it or not?  Clearly, he is at odds with Bush over the use of "torture" but is that part of the Doctrine or not?

She had to be more memorized here because taking a position at odds with McCain would be seen as a gaffe.  Very hard to be relaxed when you can't tell someone what YOU actually think about the issue.

I would expect, for example, similar challenges to emerge on issues like Immigration policy.  Palin's best responses come from her common sense, and when McCain deviates from common sense, it puts her in more of a bind not to make him look bad.

I think she was weaker than she could have been. She was acting as if it wasn’t a hostile interview and it clearly was!

She needs to force the interviewers to ask a specific question and not try to answer the question in any accommodating way. Let them do the work! The bastards want to crucify her and there is little point in pretending otherwise.

She needs to turn the questions around to what she wants to emphasis and flat out ignore ambiguous questions. I also think she needs to challenge questions that simply make little sense or are too ambiguous.

I don’t think she can enter an interview with the fake camaraderie that they so typically have. Assume every interview will be a hatchet job until proven otherwise.

She shouldn't always try to answer the questions they ask. Answer the questions you think they should have asked. For example the question regarding experience. She should have mentioned her executive experience as a Governor, rather than the point about Russia as that is the weaker case.

156 Allah is a world-class prick, and yes, he's wrong about this interview.  I've been blogging about war and politics for six years and I didn't have the slightest fucking clue what Gibson wanted her to say.

Which "Bush Doctrine"?  Are you asking about the doctrine first offered by Bush in his address to Congress after 9/11 ("with us or against us"), the one he put forward in his second inaugural ("democracies don't invade one another"), the one he's actually followed (sometimes I lose track and just fallback on #1 and #2), or the moral inversion peddled by the Left ("the REAL reason he's doing all this is blood for oil and dividing the country to win elections!" blah blah yadda yadda)?

Btw, how's that last one working for us, eh?

Does Allah want her to give in to Gibson's trap and say she'd unilaterally invade other countries? Oh, what a field day the Left and the MSM (but I repeat myself) would have had if she fell for that.

Her answers were perfectly appropriate, though my version sitting here at my desk had a few more expletives and racial epithets thrown in.  Good for her that she kept her cool, and shame on Allah for praying for more fireworks, just so he could skewer her some more.

Maybe that's the point. There really wasn't anything substantial Allah could say against her, so he trots out all he's got; "She was weak - I dare you to be a fanboy."  Fuck you, ya third-rate demigod.

And for the record, I'll post my messages to Allah here, thanks. I try and spend as little time in that cesspool as possible.

We can all see your smirking contempt for your fellow man. I am sure you think that calling her ‘trailer trash’ is some sort of devastating putdown. You progressives see yourselves as especially knowledgeable about the world and dismiss others as 'trailer trash' or 'low information' voters. You see yourself as the select few on a crusade to save the rest of us from ourselves.

You are elitists in the worst and most vulgar way possible. Do you really see Obama’s empty platitudes as something more than good speechwriting? How has he been standing up under scrutiny these past weeks now that the gnobgobbling of the Democratic Primaries are over? When challenged he folds up like a house of cards and resorts to juvenile remarks about Sarah Palin and frat boy pranks like giving the finger to Hillary without the guts to even do it openly. He is not worthy of being elected as High School Principal much less anything grander.

Whether or not you agree with candidates, I believe it would be best to vote for the party that can give reasons beyond "because God says so."

America was founded upon the written promise to keep the church and the state separate entities. How can one call themself of an American when our founders came here to get away from people who believe that they have been exposed to all of life's lessons by the time they finish their first year of Sunday School.

While I don't know what is best for the world, at least I'm smart enough not to dedicate my life to one theory. I'm also smart enough to realize that the King James version written between 1604-1611 does not constitute "proof."

I finally watched as many of the clips as I could find on line.

I completely agree with an earlier poster:

"She came off well.  Not great, but good.  She will get better.  There is not there here. . . . I say this was a big point for the good guys."

Sarah was the same Sarah we saw in Denver -- our favorite detective from Fargo.

Gibson spent the evening staring down his nose at her.  The camera angle was designed to make him loom large and tall.

No gaffes, and some positively splendid moments.

The clip most likely to be played on TV -- the "God on our side" segment -- shows her modest, humble, in command of Lincoln.  And, with Gibson's "exact words" admonishment, ABC will be eating some big crow.

I say, thanks for the practice, Charlie (sounded like Hepburn to Bogart in the African Queen).

And, best of all, this reinforces that ABC thinks Obama is running against Palin.  Wake up, Barry, you need to start grappling with John.

The thirteen colonies were founded by Christians fleeing a land that persecuted their particular sect. This is the reason they wanted no official state religion to be established, which is a different thing than no religion at all. To suggest that they were trying to get away from religion is an absurdity.

What any of that has to do with Sarah Palin is somewhat of a mystery. She is a Christian who has never attempted to force her views on others. So is your tolerance only reserved for those who believe as you do?

Posted by: Maetenloch at September 12, 2008 12:29 AM (hn7Rm)

180 Gee Brett, what is the Bush Doctrine?

1. The policy that the U.S. would treat countries that harbour terrorist groups as terrorists themselves

2. unilateralism

3. pre-emptive attacks against hostile countries who have WMD or programmes to develop them

4. The doctrine that peace can only be guaranteed by all countries adopting democracy and the rule of law

An answer to one of these points would look stupid if applied to the other. Which was likely the point!

183 Sarah Palin's life has been turned upside down by the MSM and lies put forth by the lefty blogs.  She has had little sleep in two weeks, she is tired.
Sarah said goodbye today to her first born.  Track is off to Iraq to fight for his country.  This is her first child to leave.

She has been attacked viciously by the MSM, Hollywood and Matt Damon.  She is probably missing her quiet Alaskan existence before she was announced as VP.

Obama has countless wolves digging into her past and trying to come up with dirt on her family.

SO I ask those who do not think Sarah did well in an interview by an arrogant, MSM cocksucker with his glasses leaning on the tip of his nose: with all things considered, don't you think she did awesome?

Posted by: Sea You in Tea at September 12, 2008 01:18 AM (g/h9/)

184 Yeah, I think she did pretty well. I just think she may have been too honest when the MSM is looking for a gotcha they can use to put the Holy Obama into office.

They are vampires and should be regarded as such in an obvious way so that she can communicate her distrust of them to the American people. Most Americans know the MSM is in the tank for Obama. Use humour and wit, but make that distrust obvious.

But that's just it, Brooke. You didn't come to have an honest discussion on what your problems with Palin are; you came to stir shit up and generally be a pain in the ass. Rational people can disagree- when it descended into name-calling, the kibosh comes out.

And to educate you- a troll in this context is someone who shows up on a thread purely to toss around insulting remarks and is not interested in the exchange of ideas. This can be characterized by condescension, insult, overheated rhetoric, martyr-esque self-righteousness, et cetera- all impressively displayed in your posting here.

Our gracious host gives us the latitude to police things, and we do so with great relish. what right does a candidate for the second highest office in the land, someone who is asking america for the prividlege, of acting as vice-president, to wait over two weeks since her nomination to grant an interview with the media? This is not a Hollywood starlet, this is puiblic service- she owes it to the american public to allow the media to question her thoroughly- that is the job of the media in this country, to present the facts to the amerian public. and furthermore, wouldn't someone who claims to be such a reformer and a change agent want to interact wtht eh medai, want to get her message across as often possible?

Ahhh, but now we now the reason why- she is a complete idiot. she demonstrated major knowledge deficits, she came off as more of  hawk than George Bush, whcih is scary, and she speaks in vague platitudes and can't provide any specifics.

202 I watched the video on Nice Deb's site. Thanks, Nice Deb.

Heavy editing. It even looked like on some questions they showed her answer starting in the middle. They cut her off so often it will be clear to anyone they are not interested in her, just what use they can make of her.

She slammed a home run on the Bush Doctrine question. The primary focus of the Obama campaign has been to tie McCain to Bush. So to answer yes to the question would have been a bad thing. Instead she slipped in a criticism of Bush in her answer. That makes that clip worthless to the Obama campaign.

ABC got no gaffes on video or they would already have shown them. They would be running constantly on CNN right now. That right there makes Palin's performance remarkable.

More people will see coverage about the interview than will have watched it. The coverage will be mostly negative and will be seen that way. Just add it to the huge amount of negative coverage of Palin so far and I don't see that this interview will make any difference.

I call that a win.

Within two minutes of the ABC News story on the interview, there were over 200 comments, about 95% negative. It's almost as though DNC headquarters had people just lined up waiting to post.

But I do think it's completely reasonable to expect someone that could potentially be leading the country as early as January 22nd, 2009 to have a solid handle on the policies, doctrines, and standards that have contributed to US foreign policy for the last eight years, and the terms that refer to them. I would have been equally appalled if Biden had been come up similarly short in an answer...and Obama isn't 72, nor does he have a history of melanoma.

If you're going to come here and argue, at least try to do so in good faith.

She isn't a "random hockey mom."  She's a governor of a state.  And before that a mayor.  And a former councilwoman.  And the former chair of the Alaskan Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

In short, fuck off lefty troll.  You and all your dipshit buddies revealed yourselves quite nicely with your lame mobying.

The interview definitely showed her lack of knowledge on some very basic and important issues in our world. Bottom line: she is unprepared and not equipped to be the vice president of this country.

Other bottom line: I am unprepared for anything in life except for cutting and pasting other people's talking points.

Sarah Palin was real in the interview unlike Obama who comes out as fake all the time.  Sarah Palin is genuine and she is who I would like to see in WASHINGTON as Vice President.

225 Jackasses:  Asking a question in which there is no one right answer and which Gibson himself got wrong is no "gotcha" moment for you moonbats. As you've already been told, attacking one's enemies before they attack you has been around long before Bush. The Bush Doctrine is a collection of policies. Preemptive attack is merely one of them. That plus the editing when Gibson misquoted her about her speech and when she tried to correct him he insisted he was right was another way Gibso made himself look like a fool. The fact that he and his network creatively edited out his gaffe and left her response out of context, is proof how dishonest they are.

Wow what did you have to do go out and search a thesaurus in order to pull out the word extemporaneous .  I see you used your college degree for something positive.  Now that we have gotten past the part about you being educated. Please go get a book on american politics, and then read a book on socialism and could you then possibly elplain the difference between Obama and Socialism? (Might be kinda hard not muchthere   Oh and could you possibly let me know what socialist government actually works for its people?  I bet your one of the people that believes that the government owes you health care and should bail out all of these people that moved into homes because they thought they deserved it just because they were americans and needed the american dream right now with out really working for it.  Oh and the best part is after their property taxes and their arm loans on their mortgages hit they were unable to afford their home resulting in the largest forclosure ratio in history.  This was completely due to Bill Clinton's plan that every american should own a home.

And you may want to actually use smaller words that dont have several meanings if you plan to insult someone.

I do however think its funy that the media and almost all liberal dem's are comparing Sarah Palin to Barrack Obama as if she was running to be president... and trying to debate which of them is more qualified.

Point Blank if you need to compare Obama who is running for President to Palin who is a running mate to McCain;  Your canidate Obama is not ready to be the leader of the nation.  Maybe he should try being a Governer first and let Hillary have the nomination  at least then we would have some humor in the white house with Bill back...  That guy is great for a good laugh.

See where the Dem's Messed up is when it was that close at the end of the primary and they gave it to Obama as they should because he had the majority of the popular vote in the top electorial states.  However they did not count on the thousands of peole that voted for Obama in the Primary just to vote against Hillary.

So I watch it on u-tube and what I saw was an abusive man who just showed his colors in public.   This man should not be around women and young girls period.  He is a total jerk and abuser!

I do not watch morning Televison and had no idea such a horrible women hater was a regualr on ABC.  They need to get rid of this abuser.  He clearly hates women and isn't worhty of being in the presence of Sarah Palin.

Is this the same woman running for the VP job and a heartbeat away from Commander in Chief? How scary is it that her obvious lack of knowledge and understanding that she will do better? Does she need to study some more? We are to assume that she can cram for this job and will somehow click her heals and she will be qualified? From shooting moose to attacking the Russian's? I was all excited about her until now. She needs a lot more that a tudor! God help us all if we elect the hocky mom to the 2nd highest office! I hope this is all a bad dream!

244 Sarah Palin's 'deer in the headlight' and 'oh shit' look in response to the Bush document question confirms that she is not prepared to be our next VP and God have mercy, certainatly  not our next President. 247 PLEASE LOOK UP THE DEFINITION OF - "WILLFUL IGNORANCE" pretty much sums up this situation. I must have watched a different interview. Ask yourselves this, is it better to bullshit your way thru an answer and look like you are clearly bullshitting your way thru an answer or to say "Charlie, I am not familiar with what you are asking me" and be honest? I would have respected that regardless or if I support or not. This is CRAZY, for people to not only condone but PROMOTE her responses as legitimate or Charlie's fault (he's the one who was wrong). In any case the word(s) for today and this particular segment of the campaign - "WILLFUL IGNORANCE".

Great Comment Jeff finally a non bullshit statement on here that no one is going to touch... I cant believe that someone does not try to twist this around...  I guess we are on here for the sake of badmouthing Sarah Palin and we dont want to argue facts.  I gather Obama he would just rather go meet with Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Syria and try to be buddies and say hey guys lets quit building Nuclear Weapons... Oh and yea the funny thing is he thinks that it’s actually going to happen that way....  News Flash for everyone if Obama is elected he is going to hand our enemy nations a strong hold in Europe and The middle East by withdrawing our troops.  Pull out or troups from Germany and bring them home and see how fast Russia goes on the offensive against the US.  Quit building Missile defense systems and see how fast a nuclear weapon is fired on the US or one of our allies that we protect.

Oh and OBAMA what happened to ending NAFTA   you have the Canadians get upset with your policy so you back off of it even though it would bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States it would have taxes imposed on imports making our goods made in the united states actually cheaper and increasing American jobs.  Seems like you have done something that no nation and no leader have ever done... Backed down from the Canadians.  If your going to back down from them how are you ever going to handle Kim Jong-il

Sorry Guys I voted for Obama in the Primary on his promise of change and to End NAFTA but I will not be voting for him in November.

The only thing he has changed is his mind which he lost when he did not select Hillary.

249 it saddens me to see what western media has people believing, that somehow georgia is a victim in all this, just shows how little you really know of the big picture that usa has always liked to bully little countries, maybe you should stop watching the big 5 news stations and read a little instead of sounding like a typical american with his head up his butt, im sorry to inform you but south ossetia is the real victim in that conflict and now maybe you should ask yourselves why they havent been talked about through all this, that someone the president of georgia thats done nothing but lie is somehow the victim?   why is it that the rest of the world has acknowledged that georgia started this and you sit here surprised that no one tried to twist this around?  on the palin topic, shes clueless and if shes to be vice president id be afraid of the next 4 years, what does it take to open someones eyes to reality here???   what does it take for people to realize that this is a joke and she was picked cause she's a woman, lets stop acting like its not cause shes a woman that she was picked cause its starting to sound ridiculous, she sounds like one of my sisters that always tries to convince you that she's right no matter what the casue, only in this case you're trying to convince millions and not just 1 or 2, give me  a damn break and it'll only be another week or so before they dont even wanna hear what else she's gonna bullshit everyone about, ive alreayd noticed that the hype is dying and quickly .....  thank god

252 well its pretty common knowledge now that Georgia was the aggressor in all this, if you google south ossetia you should get all kinds of sites and information on what really happened on that side of the world, South ossetia was attacked in the middle of the night ... genocide, ethnic cleansing is what saakachvili is being accused of now, ive always been very interested on what really goes on around the world and if theres something i learned over the years is not to take the Western media seriously, they have been well known to manipulate what people beleive and its very unfortunate, CNN, msnbc, fox, abc ....   http://4international.wordpress.com/2008/08/24/the-big-lie-of-the-western-media-on-the-georgian-attack-on-ossetia/
this is only one of 100's of sites from different countries, seems the only country that hasnt even talked about it is usa, why??? im not even sure i have my theories but i wont go there, i just wish for a change that we would get the real news and not have ot hear people like Sarah palin who clearly has absolutely no idea what goes on outside her little happy life in alaska say well if UN is in war with Russia i guess we'll have to go .... thats real nice to hear that from someone who could possibly be in power if the old McSame croaks ive been criticised many times about being against usa and i personally dont care what anyone thinks, theres quite a few things being said now in usa about georgia starting it with south ossetia and soon enough it'll all be exposed, unfortunately the Western Media will not cover it so no one will even know what happened,   South Ossetia, does anyone even really konw who and where that is?   Sarah palin thinks that Putin is President of Russia too?     saddens me to see any of those candidates even going there, maybe they should promise the people that they'll mind their buisness and not make allies with bankrupting countries over oil  ... yes oil oil oil

Oh I am not happy.

RE: editting--I glumly report that the uneditted version is even worse.  The tape was editted in her favor, go check the transcipt and you will see.  She also does not know what a head of state is. With a BA in journalism, she is completely in over her head.  I can relate to her so much, now I am wondering if that is a problem.  I am in no way ready to be president. :-(

This interview cinched it for me, she is completely unprepared for this job.

The problem is not just that she didn't ace the interview, but that she revealed she isn't really all that interested in foreign policy.  Her answers were not only scripted but they rarely even answered the question.

My biggest question is: Why did Sen. McCain choose someone so ill prepared to lead?  The Republican party has the greatest history of the most competent, experienced leaders, far more so than the Democrats.  So what were they planning? Who in the heck is going to tell her what to do?  And what is their agenda?

I don't know what I am going to do now.

Maribelle-  I will not argue her qualifications with you however if she is not prepared how in the world can Obama feel that he is prepared.   He has done absolutely nothing that she has not acomplished and actually less on the scale of actually making decisions and running a gov. office.  Unless you count running for president of the united states as a qualification to be president.

Lets face it the Dem's made the wrong choice in picking him and he made the wrong choice in not picking Hillary as his VP.  Its a damn shame what pride will get in the way of.  He knew she was the ticket to the white house and instead picked someone that could in no way help his ticket.

255 well its hard to say who to trust when it comes to the candidates and if there was a NONE OF THE ABOVE that you could vote for so your vote wouldnt go uncounted, im afraid that NONE OF THE ABOVE  might actually win. anyways at the end of the day 18million plus people picked obama and 1 person picked Palin and that has to be mentionned cause we seem to forget that on a few of the arguments she made shes flip flopped ...  this really is about the top of the ticket mccain and obama but if for any reason anything happened to mccain you're stuck with Palin who has no idea about foreign policy and influence would surely play a huge part in decisions and this would be friggen scary, bottom line and no one can deny this, he picked her cause she's a woman and trying to win the votes that clinton would of got which should be an insult to every women who was going to vote for her making them seem shallow that they were only voting for her cause shes a women and not on her accomplishments and experience, she might get a few of em but not many, the hype is already dying out since this interview and biden should be body slamming her next week with a debating clinic, she best be ready cause this is going to be painful to watch for all those wannabe Palin fans

Posted by: Allister9 at September 14, 2008 11:37 PM (J4s3j)

256

Calivotes--Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard.  He is a constitutional law scholar.  Did you see him speak in Berlin?  Heads of state were amazed by him.  200000 people came to hear him speak.  McCain tried to turn that into something negative.  It was a huge success.  Those are the people he would be working with to improve America's standing in the world.

I cannot see Sarah Palin even being able to have a conversation with world leaders.

Being a small-town mayor and 20 month governor does not teach anyone anything about foreign policy.

The world is as dangerous as it has ever been and America is getting left behind.  The dollar is in freefall.

Do I need someone who's "just like me"?  NO--I need someone who understands and can talk about the issues.  I have been reading up on Obama's policies and he makes so much sense.  I don't care at all for McCain as a person, and then Sarah came along.  Boy did she wow us at the converntion.  I love baby Trig and Piper!

But, as I have heard this interview and checked out her record in Alaska, she was the earmark queen of Wasilla (27 million in earmarks she took, and came into a debt free town and left it 22 million in debt)--and in litigation over sports stadium.

I was ready to shoot some reporters after they went after her daughter (not all of us were married when we got pregnant *cough* as in me) But when I looked at her record, folks, there's some serious skeletons in her closet.

I don't want government coruption; we've had too much of that.
