WaPo Editorial: "Victory in Anbar -- Though Iraq's future remains uncertain, one result of the war is in: A defeat for al-Qaeda in the Sunni heartland"

And so the WaPo continues building its brand: Liberal, but not crazy. Liberal, but not stupid. Liberal, but not anti-American.

Excepts and extended commentary at Op-For.

But They're Still Ridiculously Biased, Right? Oh yes. Oh very yes.

1 There's a huge difference between the WaPo's editorial page and their news department.  The ed page is left of center but generally fair and honest.  Their news dept. is farther to the left and often unfair and dishonest.

6 Liberal, but not willfully intellectually dishonest like some others we could name.  The WaPo is the Joe Lieberman of the MSM.

Mr. Bush's decision to send them, in opposition to the counsel of most of Congress and some in his own administration, will stand as one of the best and most courageous acts of his presidency.

Who's got that "Judgement" thingy, again? "Most of Congress": that includes Obama and Biden, and excludes John McCain.  Needs to be mentioned frequently.

9 All in all...I'd say it was a fair assessment.  It IS possible Anbar may erupt again...though Bush is smart enough to keep the military there to keep things in check.  And it was Bush that pushed for the surge and Petraus who used the extra troops so effectively.

I'd say the biggest mistake Bush made?  Not handling his PR well.  He deserves far more credit than he receives and far less garbage than he gets.

You know, it's been so long since I've met a liberal that didn't argue in bad faith, I was beginning to think they just gave up any kind of internal consistency.  It's nice to think that's not the case somewhere in the country.  What do they stand for, anyway?  (only half-joking)

Posted by: Cautiously Pessimistic at September 11, 2008 02:33 PM (ltwze)

Yeah, they are really in the tank for Bush.

A defeat would be on PAGE ONE.

This story, page TWENTY.

Glad they could spread the news of victory.

Yeah, it's nice to read that some of them that have soared above being traitorous bastards and attained the heights of being just fucking stupid.

Posted by: sherlock at September 11, 2008 02:39 PM (ZrS0c)

13 This just proves that the so-called "liberal" media is actually in the tank for that fascist dictator George Bush and his evil rethugliKKKan paymasters in the oil industry.  Thank God (if I believed in God, which I don't) for courageous truth-tellers like Keef Olbermann, who tell it like it is.

That's what they'll say, you know...

14 Like I said above, they are biased in their news reporting.  But that blurb from the Corner makes no frickin sense if you read the article it links to.   Either a bad link or a stupid gaffe - why make up examples of bias when there are plenty real examples out there.

15 "Still too close for comfort."

Again, it's registered voters.  Last time Gallup adjusted for likelies the registered spread was also 4 points...  But the likely spread was 10.

Worry about McCain screwing it up, not the lead not being a lead.

14.  No, they don't do "update" like blogs do, so you can't see the changes, but the article has definitely changed.  For the better (give credit where credit is due).  Would the current article have been better right out of the gate?  You betcha'.

To their credit, I think the WaPo is ahead of the curve in walking back the off-the-chart batshit crazy stuff because they're not willing to completely sacrifice their cred for the One.  And when the Pentagon asked them not to run with the JSOC effort in Iraq, they kept the lid on (again, GCWCID).

I'm not releasing my grip on the cluebat just yet, but they do deserve some modest praise.

17 It would not surprise me to see the WaPo endorse McCain.  (you read it here first)

Posted by: Jean at September 11, 2008 02:55 PM (L64A6)

18 The WaPo is the Joe Lieberman of the MSM.

That's an utterly perfect analogy.  Having grown up with the WaPo as a local for years, I've seen this attitude in action over and over again.  They are quintessentially "left-center," leaning towards liberal values but unwilling to sell out to the Kos-wing of the party.  Whether that is out of conviction or out of the sense of responsibility that comes from being the lead paper of a city where the powerbrokers will always split roughly equally back-and-forth, I know not.  All I know is that their editorials sometimes surprise me in their break from Dem partisanship, and their Op-Ed page is easily the most interesting collection of voices for any page in America.

My family's shameful confession is that, even though we ended up subscribing to the Washington Times out of partisan bitterness, we still prefer the Post.  It's just a better newspaper.  I may be a reliable partisan myself, but I still want to hear from the other side too.

Posted by: Jeff B. at September 11, 2008 03:22 PM (USS4v)

19 And I agree with #17 Jean...it would not surprise me to see the WaPo endorse McCain either.  I half-thought they might endorse Bush in '04 -- so seriously do they take national security matters -- but even though Obama poses a formidable catnip to their reliable liberal bias, there's still a non-trivial chance (say 30%) that they reluctantly endorse McCain.

Posted by: Jeff B. at September 11, 2008 03:24 PM (USS4v)

20 My family's shameful confession is that, even though we ended up subscribing to the Washington Times out of partisan bitterness, we still prefer the Post.

Jeff B, my dad used to call the WaPo the "Downtown Daily Worker" so I'd ask him how come he just didn't subscribe to the Washington Star (which is what the Washington Times used to be).  He'd just roll his eyes and say that he needed to read a real newspaper to find out what's happening in the world.

Posted by: Captain Hate at September 11, 2008 03:46 PM (r9x7Q)

The Washington Post has to offer it papers for free in order to boast its circulation.  Now one has to draw your own conclusions about this but considering its content I find the free offer useful for wrapping my fish waste and to cover floors during painting.

It'ws contents are seldom accurate and its editorial page is slightly more measured than the NY Times.  Predictable, unhinged, and always progressively Marxist.   Professional?  Measured?  Objective?

Almost as good as the LA Times.

22 The evolution of the "progressive" stance on Iraq:

1. Quagmire!
2. Disaster!
3. Looming Defeat!
4. Quagmire!
5. Political Immobility and Corruption!
6. Victory isn't everything...and anyway, Afghanistan!
7. Victory wasn't worth the cost!
8. Iraq? I do not know this "Iraq" of which you speak. Perhaps you were speaking of Afghanistan, where, by the way, we're losing?

Yeah, in this corner of Minnesota we refer to the Star-Tribune as the "Star and Sickle". That stupid rag is so sunk in progressive cant that it almost defies parody. (Luckily it's hemorrhaging cash and will probably be nothing but a grim memory and a lingering odor by this time next year.)
