Palinmania Grips the Upper East Side of Manhattan... Kinda

I read on The Corner that a group brandishing McCain/Palin signs was at Lex and 86th. I called up a blogger in the UES blog-bureau, Ari, and asked if she'd gotten pictures.

"Oh, you mean the four people on the corner waving signs?"

Yes, alas.

Okay, so it's not exactly the Beer Hall Putsch. (But honestly, what could be? Good times, good times.)

Still. This is where Woody Allen lives with his wife-slash-daughter. So, it's something.

Unrelated, I know, but I can't help it. This ticked me off.

Today I was listening to The Situation Room on CNN. A Dem strategist was calling Palin a liar and a hypocrite because she "slashed funding for special needs kids." Actually as we all know she tripled it, that rumor was debunked by FactCheck.org two days ago, but no one challenged her.

Leslie Sanchez was there to represent the Repubs so Wolf Blitzer says, "anything you want to say to that charge, Leslie?" and she just stammers, "Oh, I hadn't heard that particular rumor but there's certainly a lot of false information out there!" Way to do your homework, dumbass.

How is it that you and I know this stuff but the people they're sending to CNN don't?

I don't expect Wolf Blitzer to pipe up, even though I'm guessing he knew perfectly well that rumor was false. But fuck, come on Leslie, do your fucking homework.

Manhattan?

Big ones. Plain and simple.

The most lunatics I've ever seen in one place was the day before the President's Day blizzard in N.Y. in 2001.

There it was, still fresh hell from 9/11, and there were thousands of of jackasses walking the streets in protest. I was sick as all get out and was majorly pissed that my trip to N.Y. was ruined and then, on the way back to the car, the police had redirected the foot traffic way the hell out of the way in order to keep the protesters in line. There were folks standing there, in front of the line of police, calling them every imaginable (though unimagnative) name they could think of.

I lost it.

I stood in the street screeching at the crowd, calling them every dirty thing I could think of. Many of the police offers who stood in the street that day had likely been at the WTC site on that awful day, risking their lives to save others. Those who had not been at the site that day were likely to have been touched personally by the tragedy and those bastards were calling them names.

I was with a customer btw, did I mention that? My customer dragged me, still screaming, back to the car. I hadn't even stopped to think of how I would be perceived by him and, afterwards, dreaded what I might face when I returned to the office the next week.

When I returned to Jax, there was a dozen roses from him waiting for me at my desk.

Again, those four folks...holding McCain signs...BIG ones.

29 Hey, I'm going to have some free time starting next week. I'd start waving signs on the UES.

Of course, the real tough area is the west side. I don't know. I generally don't deign to cross Madison, much less 5th ave.

Of course, on the Upper West Side, it would be funnier and uglier.

34 Hey, I put a McCain/Palin sign in the front window of my South Philly house. So far, no bricks or molotov cocktails. The Messiah's not playing to well among the bitter, clingy, ethnic (ie:Caucasian), working-class city folks either.

My next step will be to put a bumper-sticker on the car. The W sticker I put on my beater in '04 cost me a few hundred bucks in paint, and 2 taillights.

Posted by: Dr. Remulak at September 11, 2008 12:23 AM (srd67)

35 What, is Wednesday at high noon the time at W. 86th? Maybe a can meet an attractive, or semi-attractive non-Lefty woman there? It's really tough to accomplish such in NYC!

By the way, why are all the McCain shirts blank on back? Mitt Romney's shirts had his name front and back!

Posted by: FloofyParisParamus at September 11, 2008 12:26 AM (KSF7K)

36 I'm convinced that if voting for McCain/Palin didn't seem like such a taboo here, more NYC'ers would do it. I'm putting a bumper sticker on my work bag. My fellow personal injury attorneys will flog me.

Posted by: FloofyParisParamus at September 11, 2008 12:32 AM (KSF7K)

37 Well, I just got back from a Young Republican meeting on 37th and Lex that had at least 25 people there. And there's another YR group that meets the week after next. So there are certainly more than 5 Republicans in Manhattan...Did I mention that the guy who sold "W" ketchup in 2004 lives in the apartment below me?

And for the record, Woody and Soon-Yi used to live on 92nd between Park and Madison. He sold the place. I like to think that the 2 times I encountered them and start screaming "Shame!" and "Child Molester!" had something to do with it. Woody always ran for the nearest cab. Soon-Yi wanted to punch me in the face. I wish she did. I would have paid off my student loans by now. Hell, I wouldn't even have had to borrow money to go to law school. Then again, with my settlement money, I probably would have stopped working and developed a heroin habit and never gone back to school.

The way Republicans are discussed in Manhattan makes me visualize those meetings like a scene from "The Diary of Anne Frank". Held in secret, under the stairs, while the tolerant ruling class marches outside.
