Looks like more than 20K, I think Gatewaypundit had a link to someone there, saying that all of the 12k flags were handed out, and less than 1/3 had a flag.  Their personal (biased) guestimate was greater than 30, and with the later portion, said that he couldn't believe it was less than 40, and maybe as much as 50K.

They did and you don't want to see the comparison.  It's about $290/person.  One of the highest per capita.  Although, I think most people don't understand that it was a) reduced from previous years as soon as she got in and figured out what was going on and
b)  Alaska has been on the dole for years due to its status as a territory until 50 years ago and the fact that the feds own a lot of the land and that it has a large indigenous native population compared per capita to the rest of the nation.

69 On the earmark thing, Alaska ain't pretty - the thing to remember is that the Feds make a shit-pot of money off of all the resource extraction, so a lot of it is just money just going home.  The best talking points would be that it was not spent on a museum of hippiness, and Palin has been trying to clean up the situation by taxing the resource extraction companies in Alaska and using the proceeds to fund the state as necessary, which is how she has been able to massively reduce the earmark amounts.

76 sherlock, crowds are hard to estimate without a lot of practice.  I'm pretty much with you, although I figured by estimating the square footage covered by the crowd (as accurately as I could without a good metric) then applying well-established rules for how much space an average adult takes up.  (Shoulder to shoulder is somewhere between 1.5 and 2 square feet, comfortable distance is more, etc.)

I can't see the edges of the crowd, but I'd be surprised if there are more than 15,000 people there.

For comparisons, google things like the Hong Kong Marathon (any year).  There is usually  a pretty good overhead shot of the participants, and we *KNOW* how many there are because they're wearing consecutive numbers.

It's amazing how large a crowd of 50,000 or so looks when you haven't really seen one well enough before to know how many there are.

Or google the crowd at the Ellipse in DC for the Sep 23 Anti-War Rally in 2003.   Overhead shots and geometry pretty much should convince you there can't be more than 30,000, and probably only 25,000 there, despite claims of 100,000 that were widely published.

The Springs is a lovely shade of uber-conservative, and the area near the airport, which shares a runway with and is adjacent to Peterson Air Force Base, is uber-uber-conservative. About 400-500K people in El Paso County, including enough to staff 5* military installations (plus a whole lotta mil retirees) and dozens of conservative Christian orgs (Focus on the Family and several others have HQs there). John McCain, meet choir. Choir, meet McCain. Preach, gook-hater, preach.

* Schriever AFB (controls military satellites), Cheyenne Mountain AFB (aka NORAD - the one inside the mountain), Air Force Academy, Peterson, and Ft Carson Army Base. When I lived there we never bothered with the "what do we do in case of nuclear war - we knew we'd all be turned to glass in the first 5 minutes.

I'm cheering for McCain-Palin big time, but Palin has GOT to vary her speech, and not just a little bit, a lot.

Sure, she's only running for Veep, but people are paying attention (and through her to McCain), and she needs to give them new stuff to reward that attention. 

Nearly 40 million watched her Convention speech, and it was very memorable, so lots of folks will start feeling they already know all she has to say, and then a sense of "cliche" will set in even for lines and vignettes that were quite original.
