In my case, I turned 18 in March of 1981 and had to convince the postmaster that I had to register. But I was living in a really small town and may have been the first to turn 18 since registration restarted...

I don't care what wikipedia says, I graduated HS in '78 and I distinctly remember filling out a card at the post office and registering for the draft. I also remember being distinctly un-scared of the prospect of conscription, because it just wasn't going to happen.

And I didn't feel overly patriotic about registering, since all I was doing was following the law which required my cohort to register.

The Soviets invaded Afghanistan in late 1979.

As part of the response, President Carter asked Congress to re-instate the registration requirement for Selective Service. Congress passed the authorizing legislation as part of the FY 1981 Defense Authorization in 1980.

Initially 19 & 20-olds were required to register starting in late 1980. It wasn't until a couple years later that the backlog had been taken care of and it became register on your 18th birthday.

During the Kerry-Bush debates, especially the first one, Kerry won on points. Hugh Hewitt and a very few others countered that Bush won the debates, just by allowing Kerry to bloviate about a "global test" for America pursuing its interests abroad.

Registration is conducted at U.S. post offices and at U.S. embassies and consulates outside the United States. If I remember right there was a schedule for when you had to register. I was in California on vacation with my family when it was my time and registered at the PO in Irvine on August 22. Had to get past all the kooks telling me not to register.
