| Barack Obama Questions McCain's Patriotism: "The strange question is why John McCain insists on continuing to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" in IraqThat is precious. That is rich. That's some weird, wild stuff. McCain is trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. By winning the war 'n shit. Hokay. And note that when this charge was leveled at Obama -- a situation in which it was not falling-down funny -- it was an "attack on Obama's patriotism" and a smear he ran to Mommy Media over. Oh, and suddenly Mr. Debate-Dodger is all psyched for a "substantive" debate on foreign policy with McCain.Comments1

Yeah, that's a mighty strange question. Sort of like:
"Why Barack Obama insists on keeping race out of the campaign." or "Why Vladimir Putin insists on dressing in a Speedo and licking whipped topping from Andrew Sullivan's navel." Posted by: notropis at September 07, 2008 03:54 PM (A3mhA) Posted by: bgates at September 07, 2008 03:55 PM (CFjXn) 4
Hey Ace,
Saw this at Media Blog. Andrew Sullivan: A Favorite Blogger of Team Obama [Greg Pollowitz] Why is Barack Obama re-posting Trig-Truther Andrew Sullivan’s blog posts on his site? I believe the correct phrase for this is, Obama’s chickens are coming home to roost. Posted by: Mal at September 07, 2008 03:56 PM (3YQoI) 5
Obamas desperately trying to grasp at straws here, now that his campaign is headed toward Davy Jones Locker. Now he wants to be the war candidate. Too late Barry, everyone allready sees through that bullshit.
He claims he registered for the selective service before graduating highschool in 1979, however the selective service wasn't re-instated until 1980. He's now saying he once seriously considered joining the military. Hmmmmm, missed that one in his two memoirs. Charles Johnson has a post up about it. http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/31176_Obama_Suddenly_Remembers-_He_Almost_Joined_the_Military Posted by: Blazer at September 07, 2008 03:57 PM (+FzLa) 6
"My whole premise has always been that it was a distraction for us

"however the selective service wasn't re-instated until 1980."
I coulda swore I registered in my senior year, which was '78-'79. In fact, I remember registering at my home-town post office, which I wouldn't have done in 1980, since I didn't go back home for several years. You might want to double-check that. (On the other hand, my memory sucks.) Posted by: notropis at September 07, 2008 04:01 PM (A3mhA) 9
Obviously campaign genius and major cock-gobbler David Axelrod has shifted to the "Let's try and get McCain to laugh himself to death" mode.

Notropis, Wikipedia (for what it's worth) says the registrations began in July of 1980.
In my case, I turned 18 in March of 1981 and had to convince the postmaster that I had to register. But I was living in a really small town and may have been the first to turn 18 since registration restarted... Posted by: Anachronda at September 07, 2008 04:09 PM (xIUG5) 14
Like I said, my memory sucks. Maybe what I'm remembering is picking up a package and signing for it. I do recall registering sometime (and noting that my older brother got grandfathered out of it, not that it made any difference).
Well, I wouldn't fault Barry for messing up by a year on that one (if/since I just did.) But this, "I was thinking about enlisting," fits right up there with Hillary's being turned away by the recruiters for being female.... Posted by: notropis at September 07, 2008 04:14 PM (A3mhA) 15
I really think the Onion is going to have to fold it's tent soon, I mean they can't make shit like this up fast enough to outpace reality.

Barry has obviously 'cramming' with all of his 'foreign policy experts' and feels that he's up to a debate. After all, cramming worked in Law School, why not in a political debate. Can hardly wait for all the uh's, ah's, hmmm's, as his mind races feverishly to recall the single general gem that will cover the question. Of course there's always the "Prime Directive" of Law School. "If you can't present facts to support your position......drop back 5 yards and just make some bullshit up. There's always one idiot who will buy into it." Unfortunately for Barry, he's forgotten that this dictum only applies to 12 jurors, not the American public. For what it's worth (//looks down at username and cringes), I just
completed SF86 for a secret security clearance last week for soon-to-be gainful
employment, Allah willing. One of the questions is about your
selective service record:
<< Are you a male born after December 31, 1959? >> Shouldn't that place the start date for selective service registration as January 1, 1978? Or would your "reason for your legal exemption" on the line asking for your registration number be, "Uh, they hadn't started yet"? Seems goofy. Posted by: Herr Blücher at September 07, 2008 04:27 PM (GlZN4) 21
In answer to my own question: yep, I guess so.
Posted by: Herr Blücher at September 07, 2008 04:30 PM (GlZN4) 22
How do you think it would play if, during the debate, McCain just openly laughed at one of Barry's wussy answers?
Posted by: Doc Rochester at September 07, 2008 04:33 PM (kXcbE) 23
Whether the Selective Service sign up was re-institued in '78, '79, '80 or whenever, does it really bolster your faux hawk credentials to cite that you signed up? The number of living American males who've done the same has got to be in the 8 figures range. I graduated from HS and turned 18 in '78 and I have no reccollection as to whether I did or didn't, but it reflects not one iota on whether I'm hawkish enough to be trusted in the White House.

I don't care what wikipedia says, I graduated HS in '78 and I distinctly remember filling out a card at the post office and registering for the draft. I also remember being distinctly un-scared of the prospect of conscription, because it just wasn't going to happen. And I didn't feel overly patriotic about registering, since all I was doing was following the law which required my cohort to register. Posted by: Prufrock at September 07, 2008 05:04 PM (vISQb) 33

The Soviets invaded Afghanistan in late 1979. As part of the response, President Carter asked Congress to re-instate the registration requirement for Selective Service. Congress passed the authorizing legislation as part of the FY 1981 Defense Authorization in 1980. Initially 19 & 20-olds were required to register starting in late 1980. It wasn't until a couple years later that the backlog had been taken care of and it became register on your 18th birthday. Posted by: Simon Oliver Lockwood at September 07, 2008 05:16 PM (QyYEn) 35
>"As somebody who's served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and passed legislation on issues like nuclear proliferation -- and somebody who selected Joe Biden as vice president, who is chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Committee -- I'm going to be happy to have a substantive debate with McCain about foreign policy," < Holy cow, that's about as lame as that 4H Club speech I gave in the 7th grade. Mary Mother of Jesus, does the One think he's getting foreign policy cred through osmosis or what? Oh, I get it, in the same fashion that he has executive experience because he's running for president, he also has foreign policy experience because of the Six Degrees of Joe Biden. #22 Since the viewers will be laughing I think if McCain laughs it will play just fine.
I would also like him to say "You can't be serious?" Also, "You understand your answer will get a lot of people killed and will weaken our negotiating position." And, " This tactic has never once worked, ever." And " Sir, your naivete is shocking and it would be with great fear that I would watch you carry out that tactic." And lastly, "Senator Obama, please for the love of God and this great country do not consider even for a moment doing (insert stupid idea here)." During the Kerry-Bush debates, especially the first one, Kerry won on points. Hugh Hewitt and a very few others countered that Bush won the debates, just by allowing Kerry to bloviate about a "global test" for America pursuing its interests abroad. Hugh Hewitt may or may not have been dropping E at the time, but he was right. All McCain has to do is to stay focused and genial. Obama has the harder job, of disguising his laughable policy prescriptions. (I don't think Obama will be stupid enough to bring up McCain's or Palin's family histories. Biden on the other hand...) Simon Oliver Lockwood is right. The Selective Service (PDF link) started in 1980.
The Congress of the United States has made available the funds (H.J. Res. 521, approved by me on June 27, 1980 (Pub. L. 96-282, June 27, 1980, 93 Stat. 552)), which are needed to initiate this registration, beginning with those born on or after January 1, 1960. NOW, THEREFORE, I, JIMMY CARTER, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Military Selective Service Act, as amended (50 U.S.C. App. 451 et seq.), do hereby proclaim as follows: It certainly doesn't demonstrate a willingness to enter the military or any type of patriotism to register. Failure to do so can keep you out of several programs that rely on Federal funds (as well as put you in jail I would imagine, but I'm not familiar with the penalties for non-compliance so that's just my own guess.) In 1980 President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation (Proclamation 4771, July 2, 1980) requiring all males who were born after Janu- ary 1, 1960, and who have attained age eighteen, to register with the Selective Service. Registration is conducted at U.S. post offices and at U.S. embassies and consulates outside the United States. If I remember right there was a schedule for when you had to register. I was in California on vacation with my family when it was my time and registered at the PO in Irvine on August 22. Had to get past all the kooks telling me not to register.
