| Left Fantasizes About a Race Without Palin [someone]Faced with the all-too-real prospect of the Obamessiah's defeat, TalkLeft's formerly rational Jeralyn Merritt has has resorted to fingers-in-the-ears lalalalacan'thearyou denial: Pool: What Day Will Sarah Palin Drop Out?What's most amazing may be that a significant portion of her own readers (in the comments) realize how actually disgraceful such fantasizing is. Of course, the Kos Kids Want to Believe as well... A full half of them have sacrificed all common sense on the altar of wishful thinking. That dread you feel, lefties? It's not something you can wish away. But your responses show your true, ugly colors. Comments1
I guess McCain is really doing something right here.

Well, since the media is now picking up the Bristol pregnant story and running with it, they have shown that they will try to destroy an innocent teenager's life for their purposes. And that is so totally fucked up. I doubt even Pol Pot or Fidel would go that far, but maybe. We know who started this third-world-type of shit, and it is the American Left and the sewer-swimming shit-eating rats who comprise it who did it. Some are trying to claim that Palin is the new Eagleton, but a quick read of the McGovern/Eagleton adventure will quickly send you to the nominee who has already had brain surgery .. Joe Biden.

What makes me laugh is how few people see that the problem with Palin is 'in the middle'. They talk about her pick as energizing the base, or peeling off Hillary supporters instead.
But the middle - those 'uncommitteds' and independents are where the real reaction will be over the next month... She will impress - there's real steel there. Posted by: dhead at September 02, 2008 08:20 AM (QsoEC) 8

When is Palin dropping out? Oh dear god, this is what it must sound like right before the Dems curl up in the fetal position under the kitchen table, sucking their collective thumbs and start crying Please make the bad man stop...
What I find interesting is that over the past several months when the chatter was about how the conservative base had to eat a shit sandwich because "Ronald Reagan ain't walkin' through that door!", there was nothing from the leftards but the usual Bush Derangement Syndrome and Rove/Cheney bashing. But now, we conservatives have suddenly found our Ronald Reagan. We're excited, we're energized, we're donating, we're volunteering. And we're all gonna get off the couch and go vote for McCain in November. The left sees the disaster unfolding before them, and they are scared shitless. - Electoral history shows that men are very good at telling women what issues they should be most concerned about. I think the male Obama supporters are going to really, really make a difference this election. When McCain announced Palin as the pick, my wife's immediate reaction was that McCain was pandering. She's in the "casual political, until about two weeks before the election" category. What was interesting was her reaction to all the talk on the morning shows about "Palin as Mayor". After a bit she started getting angry that "they" - all men - were dismissive of Palin's accomplishments and didn't bring up her current job. - Posted by: BumperStickerist at September 02, 2008 08:26 AM (NnAGL) 11

This reminds me of the time when old Rev. Wright was up in arms about people in our beloved congregation putting only a dollar in the donation baskets, he said "You might as well walk up to the cross, and spit in Jesus's face!"
The sewer diving media might as well just walk up over the Palin's and rain down hot loads of excrement from their posteriors, and that's what I suggest they do. I'm Barack Obama, and I approve this message. Posted by: Barack Obama at September 02, 2008 08:30 AM (wyvRG) 14
I'm reminded of the scene from the Good, The Bad and The Ugly when Blondie lamented on how tough it was to shoot the rope and free Tuco when Tuco tried to get a larger cut of the scam. Tuco replied "If you miss, you better miss very well my friend. Whoever double crosses me and leaves me alive understands nothing about Tuco. Nothing." Whoever thinks Palin is going to drop out understands nothing about her. Nothing. Posted by: headhunt23 at September 02, 2008 08:33 AM (OMCBg) 15
You know, this is going to be seen by a lot of voters as an experience common to a lot of them. All of us are familiar with this situation in our own extended families. Voters will identify with this. Its a plus IMO.

I think the disconnect between Jeralyn Merritt (Talkleft) and some of her readers is typical of what's going to happen all around the country. For years, women on the left who are very ideological and/or partisan have been telling other women "us gals have to stick together". Now that an accomplished, inspiring women has a real chance to be Veep, those same people are saying "No, no, no, she's not a raging leftist" and taking glee in the sexist attacks on her.

Palin isn't dropping out. She shouldn't, and the McCain camp shouldn't be considering it. Conservatives are almost 100% behind her. The left is 100% against her. That should tell McCain right there what the correct approach in this situation is. The left would not be so hostile to Palin if she wasn't a threat. You know...this is of a piece with the other left/liberal fantasies.
I've always felt that one of the fundamental divides between so-called "progressives" and the rest of us is that "progressives" are not fond of history. History is messy, and tends to reinforce lessons that liberals don't like. So "progressives" invent the history they want -- they do this with the two weapons of post-modernism and multi-culturalism. The former turns reality into a sort of consensual hallucination whereby meaning is imposed rather than explicit; and the latter makes all points of view equal and therefore equally valid. Look at movies like "The American President" and "Dave". What kind of president exists in that make-believe world? "Progressives" prefer this fantasy vision to reality to such a degree that they no longer understand that those movies are fiction. Barack Obama is the living embodiment of "progressive" wishful thinking. You see this kind of hagiography everywhere, of course, but it mostly emanates from the Left. Ayers? Oh, sure, he might have done some unpleasant things a long time ago, but who cares? Now he's just a neighborhood fella. Reverend Wright? He was misquoted, taken out of context. Or if not, it doesn't matter because his words sound different to black ears than to white. History is what we say it is. The only meaning is the one we make. This is the true danger of "progressivism", in my view. This aspect more than any other on the Left reminds me of Orwell's 1984, where the past was continuously scrubbed and changed to reflect current values and mores; where inconvenient truths were hushed up or denied outright; where history as it actually was went down the memory hole and was lost forever. Reality was what the ruling party declared it to be, and it changed from day to day...almost from moment to moment. It's a horrifying thing. It is the ultimate kind of totalitarian nightmare. The Left has spent the last eight years building myths around the Bush presidency that are already accepted by most on the Left as truth even though they've been repeatedly debunked (the "plastic turkey" episode is one that sticks out in my mind). When Iraq was going badly, the Left trumpeted the failure to the skies; now that victory is all but certain, the word "Iraq" has faded from both lips and minds. Most Leftists will probably deny that they wished for defeat, even if they were caught on video or audio saying as much. History is not what actually happened. History is what they say it is. From comments at PJM: Amazed:
The Wizard, don’t blame Obama for Palin’s daughter getting pregnant. Can’t you see that this is nothing but a game; it’s about who plays it better. Obama has had lies, proven lies, told on him. Here the truth is being told concerning Palin’s daughter–backed by Palin and McCaine, and you find that hard to believe. Since I see this as a game, let me give you another piece of information. There’s going to be an announcement that Bristol had a miscarriage. Why do I say that? Because it’s obvious that she’s had a child, Trig, which was a coverup by her mom. This is a matter of the lesser of two evils: Sarah Palin lied about being pregnant and having a baby or my daugher is now pregnant? Open your eyes. Do you honestly think John McCaine would have put her on the ticket if he knew before selecting her as his VP? No way!! This came out in within a matter of hours, I’m waiting to see what else comes out. ** They don't give up, do they? Blech. Posted by: MamaAJ at September 02, 2008 09:25 AM (X6Zdh) 30

TalkLeft's arguments about Palin's lack of experience are lousy. Her rebuttal is that "Obama presented himself for 17 months to the American people, they heard him debate more than a dozen times, they made their own decision that he was ready for the job and the Democrats voted him their nominee." and "Voters now know Obama. They vetted him during the course of the campaign. 18 million Democrats voted he was their choice. Voters don't know Palin from Adam."
It's obviously irrelevant. Voters voted for Obama because they liked him in spite of his inexperience, it doesn't change the fact that he doesn't have that much experience. And I guess half a dozen debates (none with the candidate of the other party) now count as experience. Oh, and TalkLeft mentioned that Obama himself brought up one of those bullshit mayor comparisons with Anderson Cooper. Posted by: dorkafork at September 02, 2008 09:40 AM (kErJj) 35

Oh, I'm not scared by this -- cautiously optimistic (hey, I live in a solidly Dem county, in a town with two colleges; the diatribe here is hateful beyond belief, and I know whose going to be carried here; plus it's a long way to Nov. anthing could happen). Still, cautiously optimistic. Why? Because Obama supporters have been going around trumpeting "it's over, it's over; best quit the opposition because he's gonna win and your gonna lose" like a broken record for how long now? Think about it -- I think I've heard this meme since the primary, maybe even before then. It gets more strident anytime one of his opponents gets a bump in the polls too, even gets close to the "golden child", and then the hate and division rhetoric goes into overdrive as well, and they start rolling into blog sites, etc. that they know/think are in opposition to them and say the same meme over and over. Heck, this is starting to look exactly like what they did to Hillary (and yes, it is part of the Obama machine way -- what he did to Hillary is exactly what he did in IL; want to know what Obama will do? check out everything he's done in IL; he doesn't change too much). This is the worst case of it I've seen, so the polls must be getting awfully close (or the actuality is closer than even the polls tell). So, the hounds have been released and are in overdrive mode -- something is bothering Team Obama, and they really want the opposition to think "it's over, we're winning, we've won", now more than ever. Which means it's far from over -- sorry there Os.

The Left is being stoked by the likes of The New York Times, in TWO nearly indentical items:
While there was no sign that her formal nomination this week was in jeopardy, the questions swirling around Ms. Palin…
ST. PAUL — For at least the time being, Gov. Sarah Palin appears to have survived the initial test after the disclosure that her unmarried teenage daughter was pregnant.
SOMEONE is raising a question about judgment. The Times?...
ST. PAUL — A series of disclosures about Gov. Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain’s choice as running mate, called into question on Monday how thoroughly Mr. McCain had examined her background before putting her on the Republican presidential ticket.
…AND DEMOCRATS. Synergy, baby….
… brought anxiety to Republicans who worried that Democrats would use the selection of Ms. Palin to question Mr. McCain’s judgment and his ability to make crucial decisions.
WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
Debate between “social conservatives” and…normal women (labeled only as “some others”) about whether Palin should be allowed to be Vice President:
It’s the Mommy Wars: Special Campaign Edition. But this time the battle lines are drawn inside out, with social conservatives, usually staunch advocates for stay-at-home motherhood, mostly defending her, while some others, including plenty of working mothers, worry that she is taking on too much.
Let's see what the Gov's made of.

These dumbasses think Palin is going to withdraw? Because some fact-challenged bloggers have been burning up the Interwebs with baseless crap? Just wow. Oh, and by the way, if anyone is even a teensy bit nervous about the new Kos bullshit rumor that Bristol is not really pregnant and will soon have a fake miscarriage, check out Meghan McCain's pictures from the Dayton rally when the family was introduced. www.mccainblogette.com. She's clearly showing. They did a pretty good job having her holding Trig during the public presentations to hide the bump, but in some of the backstage photos she isn't holding Trig and it's very obvious. There was no way McCain didn't know she was pregnant because she is showing; and if the campaign had intended to hide it Meghan would not have posted those photos on her blog. The only question was when to announce it. Pretty damn brilliant to do it during a Category 3 hurricane. And no, women do not look pregnant and have visible bumps four months after giving birth either, so the BS about Bristol really being Trig's mother should be put to rest too. This entire episode should lead to the end of Markos Moulitsas and Andrew Sullivan, NOT Sarah Palin. Posted by: rockmom at September 02, 2008 10:24 AM (iZqUY) 50

As Han Solo told Luke: Don't get cocky, kid. This is going to be a tight race, and the Donks have some significant advantages. First, they'll get almost the entire black vote (upwards of 90%) and a large percentage of the Hispanic vote -- that's a given. So the fight is going to be where it usually is: in the South and Midwest. The McCain campaign is going to have to do yeoman work in getting voters to turn out this year. Bush did it in 2004, and it was the unprecedented turnout that gave him the win. Democrats are highly motivated this year; Republicans have to be just as motivated as they were in 2004, and it's not clear to me that they are. On a personal note, I knew that there would be a price to pay for the schadenfreude I felt when Bush won the 2004 election. The weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth on the left was an almost decadent pleasure, and no gift that large ever comes without strings. The price for that gift may be four years of President Obama and Vice President Biden. Hmmm. You know, just because we're right and we know our cause is righteous, it occurs to me we might still have lost this round. Palin takes the wind out of Obama's convention sails. The nutroots immediately spread the lowest, vilest crap imaginable. That crap bears a passing resemblance to an actual truth, forcing Team Mac to put Bristol's fertility center-stage. I think we lose sight of how small the blogosphere is. Palin came out on Friday and those of us who saw the speech are arm-wrestling over whether she's awesomer than TR, RWR, or Annie Oakley, and there are some bunks that have creaked a lot over the weekend. But that was the Friday morning before the long weekend, and the nutroots have succeeded in getting the meme out that Palin was a hasty, unvetted choice with a reckless daughter. Some MSM outlets have pointed out that the announcement was made in order to dispel some internet rumors, but without stooping to repeat what those rumors were it's hard for the general public to think anything other than that this is an overwhelmed young governor with an irresponsible daughter. I use my mother as a proxy for real people sometimes. She doesn't know from intertubes. When I talked to her about l'affaire Edwards she didn't know most of what was true, and worse she 'knew' a lot that wasn't. I still think that if Americans get to see our gal perform they'll come around. The truth will out, and all. But this past weekend was a [pick your cliche for when both sides lose]. BHO lost his bounce, and we lost our bubble. Posted by: Prufrock at September 02, 2008 10:42 AM (vISQb) 56
Most remarkable: everyone is comparing Palin to Obama. What's that about? Is it supposed to be a strong argument that Obama has experience comparable to the Republican VP candidate? And then I guess we'll compare McCain to Biden? How long until the Dems reverse their ticket? Obama is decrying the distraction, isn't he? The pregnancy distraction, the comparisons to the wrong candidate? Posted by: Original Roy at September 02, 2008 10:45 AM (vtR2g) 57
This may meaning nothing, but the online poll at the Cape Cod Times asked readers if this pregnant daughter thing was something the media should cover or whether it's a family matter and should be left alone. 2 to 1 that it's a private matter and STFU. This makes me wonder, what happens if the person at the top of the ticket drops out of the race for whatever reason? If it's the VP, I guess the Barry or McCain would simply select another. How does it work if Obama or McCain drop out after being nominated? Does the VP nominee advance to the number one position? Do you go back and appoint whoever got the second highest number of delegates? Seriously, does nayone know how that would work? The most truthful line in the article... "Obama doesn't have to say a thing. The media and public will do it for him." Posted by: cnredd at September 02, 2008 11:03 AM (hUuk5) 63
56:
It's perfect, and Obama is falling for it. Going on TV and talking about how his campaign has a bigger budget than the town of Wasilla. He should know better than to go the "experience" route against anyone. Doing so vis-a-vis Palin, a candidate for the 2-slot, makes him look like a joke. Which he is. Posted by: bunny boy at September 02, 2008 11:04 AM (kKg+y) 64
BHO lost his bounce, and we lost our bubble. Prufrock, Can't disagree with that. The Hurricane and the Pregnancy (title of my forthcoming book?) cut short the genuine excitment generated by the Palin pick. Just got to ride it out. Let the Left dig deeper into the muck today and tomorrow. Tomorrow night, Lady Gov takes the stage and the place will rock. Posted by: CJ at September 02, 2008 11:07 AM (9KqcB) 65
Fine and dandy- the news cycle more or less equalizes things, and now it's up to Palin and McCain to retake the initiative and seize the news cycle again. They want to push the inexperience issue, that's fine; the McCain campaign has been out in front on a lot of this stuff. They didn't suddenly forget how to campaign. tmi3rd Posted by: tmi3rd at September 02, 2008 11:14 AM (Gz0u5) 66
She strikes me as the sort of person who gets angry and determined when attacked, rather than surrendering.
I think that the answer to that question is right here. Weekly Standard via Hot Air headline. McCain aides whose judgment I trust are impressed by Sarah Palin. One was particularly amused by this exchange: A nervous young McCain staffer took it upon himself to explain to Palin the facts of life in a national campaign, the intense scrutiny she'd be under from the media, the viciousness of the assault that she'd be facing, etc.: Palin: "Thanks for the warning. By the way, do you know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a Pit Bull?" McCain aide: "No, Governor." Palin: "A hockey mom wears lipstick." About that reference with the dirt from Anne Kilkenny, note the following. Contribution To: Alaska State Democratic Party Anne Kilkenny Wasilla, AK $220 5/14/2004 state Contribution To: KING-TAYLOR, VIRGINIA (Candidate for Senate 2004 - D) 06/14/2004 Monetary 7680 $50.00 $50.00 ANNE KILKENNY Wasilla AK "Informed voter" or antagonistic party activist? At least as far back as 2004, she donated money to Democrats. No doubt that email is starting to spread and will be considered the Rosetta Stone of Palin as trumpeted from the Democrats. Buyer beware. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at September 02, 2008 11:39 AM (sI5Ho) 68

I call bs on the Obama campaign. For five months they have wanted to "go off on the girl(s). You do remember Hilary's 3:00 AM add, right? You do know what time the Obama camp put out the (VP) text alert to the obamatons, right? Hint, it was at (about) 3:00 AM. THey got some anti-women cards to play, and damnit that's just what they'll do! My newest nickname for the dem team is Senators Hopealong w/Mendacity Posted by: Sir Lurksalot at September 02, 2008 12:34 PM (W3XUk) 71
I've never in my life seen the volume and intensity of the smears they trying out against Palin. This is unprecedented and tops when they savaged Hillary, which was I thought as bad as it got. So they manage to insult: -Blue Collar workers -Unplanned mothers -Down Syndrome Children and the mothers that birth them -All of the citizens of Alaska They have lost all tact, sense of mission, and grip on reality. In other words, they are batshit insane and running scared. Posted by: Chopper at September 02, 2008 02:03 PM (WDwH+) 72
This is just soooo rich. I really think that the Dems don't realize just how played they have been. Mcain not only intensly vetted Gov. Palin but had the foresight to see how the lefties and thier cronie news networks would respond and it's going right according to plan. Do they have any clue on this has energized the Republican party, I mean energized with such intensity that I have never seen before. The huge sum of money that rolled in, the disenfranchized Hillary supporters would fell berayed by the DNC as a whole and want revenge....and now get it. In bringing Palin on board,Mcain gave us....us.....He gave us a genuine, hard working American that fights for the people and has the same problems that many of us can relate to on very personal, and when I say us, I mean all of us from all parties. Mcain new that the kooks would go nuts and that the only unsavory orginization that Obama does have control over---Network News---would just simply go over the deep end and in doing so piss off everyone with their blatant sexism, positions they stumbled over themselves with on the experiance angle, they still cant figure out how to handle this selection. Obama see its hurting him and screams out "family is off limits" but the media and the kook bloggers just keep on trudging away....its absolutley comical in seeing this magnificant strategy unfold. People love Palin when she was selected, they love her now and once all of the vile slings and arrows stop they will love her MORE. Palin....drop out? Thats as an insane of a thought as was thier completley readable response....that bear trap they just stepped it....Mcain set it, and Palin showed him how. Oh, don't worry, there is no way in hell I am changing my vote because of those fools. Palin rocks, Palin is probably the stronger half of the ticket right now. I want McCain & Palin to win just so those leftards can spend 4 more years crying into their Cheetos about the failure of the Left to win the Presidency.
