Actually, yes. As someone who directs operational risk management for a global financial corporation, yet lives in BFE (Bum Fsck Egypt in case you're not familiar with the term), I've learned long ago that people like Sarah Palin are the first on my list for recognizing risks when they're developing.

It may be a shock to the affluent upper classers here, but you guys just don't read risk right. Growing up, upper classers were too detached from the consequence to develop a strong capacity to read and predict risk. Crash daddy's BMW? You'll get yelled at, yet the family survives and another BMW reappears shortly. Likewise, the bottom classes aren't of much utility in assessing risk. No matter what they do - right decision or wrong - they get screwed. You just can't develop good predictive models in environments where cause and effect are detached like the top and bottom classes.

Sarah clearly came from the middle, where taking the right risks resulted in return. She struck me as a risk manager from the very beginning, when she said "A boat in harbor is safe, but that's not what it was built for." She recognizes risk optimization (e.g. what ISO 31000 attempts to teach executives). She's a natural. Her husband too comprehends risk optimization, which is exceptionally evident in his four-time victory in the 2000 mile snowmachine race he's competed in.

The point is this: America has become too complacant and has too many parasites (Biden, Obama, etc.) tearing it down. We've become risk averse, yet this behavior actually magnifies the real risk we encounter (hence 9/11, Putin's assault on Georgia and other barbarians at the gate). If you want to see America continue, you need generals from the middle like Sarah, not the sitzpinklers and poseurs from the top and bottom like McCain and Obama.

I'm voting for Palin this election, not McCain. Her natural expertise as a risk manager is beyond what I hope to instill in our executive management.

My mother-in-law (retired, lifelong Democrat, married to a Teamster) called me after the Palin announcement. and told me she was surprised and pleased at the pick. As someone in my life who's one of the most pragmatic at reading people (yet has a high school education and is as blue collar woman as they come), she saw Palin as the first "real people" in recent memory to be running.

She's never liked McCain. Just not sincere. Obama? "What is he hiding? It's clear he's never worked a hard day in his life." Biden? We ended talking about snakes in the grass after discussing the Deleware Senator who's had excessive experience contemplating grand thoughts and never doing a damn thing.

The institution (on both sides) is going to react negatively to Palin. I know Romney (who I supported) already has gone into shock. Who would have ever figured John McCain had it in him to make such a wildcard pick that would shake the fat-cat system up to this extent?

Yeah, we get it, she was only Mayer for 20 months, but she did a lot of respectable stuff before that, and her actual story is impressive. People look to them to inform them about Palin, and it seems like more than a few GOP pundits are taking the opportunity to establish their "I'm not a partisan" bona fides by noting that Palin is a huge risk and totally inexperienced.

However, I'm probably just too partisan to be fair. I do have faith that Palin will prove herself as the public gets to meet her. She has to be on her toes, but she's smart and well spoken and I think she knows a lot about two of the most important issues, energy and fighting corruption.

It has been and always will be Obama's race to lose. Thankfully he's a loser.

45 sirsurfalot - thanks for the support. We've definitely got the barbarians at the gate, yet we're blessed to have good people rising to the challenge. Obama and his lot are little more than statistical noise there - they offer no capacity to recognize the risk, let alone address it.

I did something I had never done before - donate to the GOP - when Sarah's appointment to the VP slot in the ticket was announced. If the good people like most of those here on Ace that I read are going to keep our families protected from the risks that evolve from complacency, we've got to get out of our comfort zones, contribute funds and support people from the middle class in politics. We absolutely must stop deferring to others in this responsibility. Yea, it's a pain in the ass, but the cost of action is well less than the expected outcome from inaction.

With people like Sarah and others from the middle class, we might have a chance at addressing the phenomenal debt the fat cats have taken on from China and others before it's too late. Will you get out of your comfort zone and get engaged?

It's an exciting time for all of us. The uncertainty is great, and we have real risks knocking at the door. I don't know if the posters here know it, but their role in all of this is probably greater than they would ever guess. We are not anonymous and should never be led to feel that way, as much as some would want us to believe. We have real barbarians at the gate. China's role in purchasing a large portion of our debt must not be ignored, nor can what OPEC's price-taking behavior be right now. They have written us off as a nation that is incapable of strategic thought (as well as the deferring of self-gratication), from reading our elite sitzpinkler class of Al Gores, George Bush, etc. If we are to respond to the challenge, it won't be from this unchallenged, elite demographic, nor will it be from the perpetual chip-on-shoulder lower classes that Obama attempts to represent.

As my 14-year-old son advised me tonight, be thankful of this challenge being presented in your lifetime (per James in the new testamant). Each of us is being asked to make our difference.

Obama is an empty suit. His inexperience will never come into play because he will be a figurehead from day one. The same people pulling his strings now will be pulling his strings then. I don't know if Obama has ever made a tough decision in his life but if he becomes President he will never have to make another one. Someone will tell him what to do, every time. So Obama's inexperience actually introduces no risk.

Palin on the other hand clearly thinks for herself. If she had to assume the office of President, she would get lots of advice from experienced Washington politicians and then do what she thinks is right anyway. She is used to deciding for herself. That's where her inexperience could hurt. Of course an experienced Washington pundit like Krauthammer would see this risk. He would not be doing his pundit job if he did not warn of it.

I think its a risk worth taking. John McCain is a pretty tough guy. He has shown a strong will to survive. I don't think he is going to die and leave Sarah Palin in charge before she is ready. In fact I don't think he's going to die for many years and and only after he serves 8 - 10 years as President of our 57 states.
