I'm totally confused... It's important for the Veep candidate to have experience but all the candidate for president needs is hope and change.   

While its true that Barack is a  U.S. senator (1 of 100 legislators) he hasn't really done much "senating". He took office in Jan 2005 and 2 years and one month later (Feb 2007) announced his candidacy for president,  so I guess the way you get the required experience to be president (an executive position) is by running for president - who knew?
