| Shocker: Historians who Donated to Obama Don't Like PalinI'm putting this up for Slublog who is having some access issues. Here's his post: Never saw that coming. So unconventional was McCain's choice that it left students of the presidency literally "stunned," in the words of Joel Goldstein, a St. Louis University law professor and scholar of the vice presidency. "Being governor of a small state for less than two years is not consistent with the normal criteria for determining who's of presidential caliber," said Goldstein. ... Palin, on the other hand, is a total "wild card," said Stanford historian David Kennedy.Let's throw a little nuance on their opinions, shall we? GOLDSTEIN, JOEL SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW 6/16/08 $250 Obama, Barack (D) KENNEDY, DAVID M STANFORD UNIVERSITY/PROFESSOR 4/20/07 $2,300 Obama, Barack (D) Five minutes on OpenSecrets netted me that information. Fred Barbash and David Mark, the reporters for this article, couldn't be bothered to do the same? Let's just say it doesn't come as much of a surprise that two guys who donated to the ticket running against McCain and Palin aren't all that impressed with her. A simple line providing information about their donations would allow the reader to put their comments into some context. I have no problem quoting liberal scholars who may disagree with the policies of a particular president. Quoting scholars who have actually donated to the candidate this sort of criticism helps, though, is just journalistic malpractice. Either find scholars that didn't donate to the candidate, or be upfront about their donations. Comments1
Any of these historians remember Warren G. Harding's qualifications for the presidency?

If Republicans want to make more women feel welcome in their party it is pretty important they not play along with this type of thing. Because playing along with a corrupt media to stick a knife in the back of a woman and a fellow party member just because she is a woman is so...Barrack. Someone should mention that to David Frum and Shannen Coffin, and maybe a few others as well.

"Small state"? Alaska is a "small state"? OK, not many people live there, but you have to take a fucking bush plane to get to the outhouse there. It holds a gigantic chunk of our oil, shares massive borders with Canada and Russia, provides most of our fish, and contains a diversity of population that the race hustlers in DC and NY and Chi-town could only dream of. Religiously, it's Protestant and Catholic whites and Orthodox natives, all dealing with their own problems, if I read it right. Trapping and hunting generated revenue produce a huge chunk of its economy, other than oil, and let's not forget tourism. Delaware could probably fit inside the city limits of Anchorage. Sarah Palin is the CIC of the Alaska National Guard, with the Russian Bear right next door, and Alaska holds a good chunk of our missile defense system. Todd Palin actually welds the fucking pipes for the oil to get to Biden's hair.
"Small state"? Small dicks is more like it. Posted by: Herr Morgenholz at August 30, 2008 04:04 PM (hYD1n) 10

I sense that the women in the great Out There, almost all of whom are wonderful, sensible people, realize that Hillary Clinton did not project emotional authenticity or intellectual honesty, unlike her husband who was personable and no doubt is a fascinating conversationalist.
Obama, when you get down to it, also comes across as fundamentally a fake as a man and as a leader. Whereas Mrs. Palin, I truly believe, would make a better President than Obama. John McCain isn't going to have serious problems winning the Out Here.. Posted by: Prince Love at August 30, 2008 04:07 PM (o4MaC) 12

"...historians are the biggest, most pompous douchebags in academics."
The sad thing is that it will take four or five generations of real historians to counter the lies and propaganda written by the leftist pieces of shit that inhabit the discipline today. My son, a 2003 history grad and ardent conservative, sent an article to me describing how military history has all but disappeared from history curricula. One historian at a major state university mentioned in the article as teaching a course about WWII has no publications on the subject but a lengthy list of pubs on the history of black females in the union movement or some other similarly earth-shattering topic. Most of the people saying she was just the governor from a small state probably supported Dean a few years ago. It is all bullshit.
The nutroots are all over the internet right now claiming the palin pregnancy was fake and a cover for her, in there words not mine, slut of a daughter. Apparently they think this fake scandal will turn off religious people. When your candidate, the one who does not want to kill your children in a 1OO year war, is having a problem with women voters the best strategy would probably be to call his opponents daughter a slut. I actually feel bad for the candidates when I am on the internet. Posted by: bleh at August 30, 2008 04:25 PM (GNCy6) 22
It seems Matthew Dallek might not be quite the impartial historian either. His bio says he's a former speechwriter for Dick Gephardt. Also, he doesn't show up on open secrets, but a Geraldine Dallek made two $500 donations to Urkel. Her listed zip is the same as one of several given for Matthew on Zabasearch. http://www.wilsoncenter.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=sf.profile&person_id=274712 Posted by: buzz at August 30, 2008 04:25 PM (Uldz5) 23

I mind that a lot.

Dean, bleh? How about Clinton, too? There are more people in Toronto (without its suburbs) than in all of Arkansas, a place that doesn't share any border with foreign countries, unlike Alaska and Texas. And re. "Orthodox natives", is that like Mel Brooks' Indians in Blazing Saddles? And what pisses me off about the Frum-type, deck-shoe Republicans in this case is that they couldn't have waited a few days, especially when it was obvious that the left was going nuts with fear over the choice, to raise their constructive concerns. Wasn't Frum the one that took great delight in torpedoing Myers? I was pretty concerned about her qualifications as well ( In light of Justice Kennedy just making stuff up I wonder why, now?) but looking back on it, why did I listen to Frum? His starting point on women seems to be, "Dames is unqualified, now fetch me another drink honey and I'll slip a dollar in your garter." You'd think the rest of the Republicans would have the brains to be careful of that.

And what would these scholars make of a the selection of 41-year-old governor, only two years into his first term?
To boot, he had a reputation for an explosive temper - as a state legislator, he once threatened the other members of his committee with a broken chair leg. And he had a questionable domestic history. When his first wife died, he practically abandoned his infant daughter - leaving her behind in the care of relatives while he fled town, not returning for several years. Oh... and Teddy was an avid hunter, too. Posted by: RedHatRob at August 30, 2008 04:42 PM (9Eknk) 31
And by Myers I mean Myers for the Supreme court. Now that I think about it I'm sure he was. And Frum? He's not a conservative. Yes, the mainsstream media are unpaid Obama campaign workers in general, and it would be helpful if those with punditarian objections (because they, you know, get paid to write something original) would stifle it, under the circumstances. But we have to consider whether we want the right-sided media to march in the same sort of lock step as the left. Do we really?

I mean if the Repubs are really interested in attracting women voters having Frum and Coffen and others claiming that their VP nominee, an attractive, accomplished intelligent woman is nothing more than a frilly little affrimitive action hire seems counter productve, and sounds just enough like Bull Connor returned to life to scare off any young woman that might take the party seriously. I'm not saying Frum is a mysygonist, but the rest of us have certainly accused the Obamites of that for saying the exact same thing. Just from a campaign strategy stand point then, hasn't Frum and company given Democrats all the ammunition they need to blunt Palin's speech next week? And Frum and Coffen, both of whom have been high powered Washington guys who have been through campaigns have to be smart enough to know that, right? So why sabotage your own? Is McCain really that hated? Or is it that Palin fought corruption in Alaska. I'm guessing neither answer will be good, but I'd like ot hear them.

I'm totally confused... It's important for the Veep candidate to have experience but all the candidate for president needs is hope and change. While its true that Barack is a U.S. senator (1 of 100 legislators) he hasn't really done much "senating". He took office in Jan 2005 and 2 years and one month later (Feb 2007) announced his candidacy for president, so I guess the way you get the required experience to be president (an executive position) is by running for president - who knew? Posted by: adk46er at August 30, 2008 05:10 PM (P0G7O) 41
Just for intellectual honesty, copy the article by Fred Barbash and David Mark, containing the words of Joel Goldstein, a St. Louis University law professor and scholar of the vice presidency, and Matthew Dallek, a presidential historian, into Word (or even Notepad). Just the article, not the Sidebar. Then search for "Obama". Only 2 hits in the entire article: ‘. . .said Dallek of Palin. "The fact that he would have to go to somebody who is clearly unqualified to be president makes Obama look like an elder statesman." ‘ Competence by Assumption?
Competence by Association?

I'm not saying Frum is a mysygonist, but the rest of us have certainly accused the Obamites of that for saying the exact same thing. I don't think Frum's problem is mysygony, it's his attitude towards "reactionary conservatives." According to him, conservatism is dead, and we have to move on to a better, more compromising horizon, as espoused by John McCain when he's not pandering to the (dead) conservative base -- Republican progressivism! Posted by: JBean at August 30, 2008 05:35 PM (NVYiD) 44
Cheney was the pick because Bush wanted a guy who could buttress his "gravitas". Biden was Obama's pick because he needed "gravitas". Gore was Clinton's pick because, you you guessed it, "gravitas". If McCain had any more "gravitas", he'd have fucking planets orbiting around him. McCain needed young, sexy, and conservative. That's what he got. If Frum can't figure that out for himself, maybe he should shut up, sit down, and think it over quietly until he does.
Posted by: A Balrog of Morgoth at August 30, 2008 05:35 PM (wgLRl) 45
Apologies; not everything was copied. But it no longer matters. Now the linked article contains this: "Update: After reading this article, the McCain campaign issued the following statement: "The authors quote four scholars attacking Gov. Palin's fitness for the office of Vice President. Among them, David Kennedy is a maxed out Obama donor, Joel Goldstein is also an Obama donor, and Doris Kearns Goodwin has donated exclusively to Democrats this cycle. Finally, Matthew Dallek is a former speech writer for Dick Gephardt. This is not a story about scholars questioning Governor Palin's credentials so much as partisan Democrats who would find a reason to disqualify or discount any nominee put forward by Senator McCain." " (emphasis and underlining mine)Nothing new, but at least someone exposed the sources for what they are and corrected the account. Posted by: Arbalest at August 30, 2008 05:40 PM (1j+ex) 46
McCain needed young, sexy, and conservative. That's what he got. If Frum can't figure that out for himself, maybe he should shut up, sit down, and think it over quietly until he does. No, Frum apparently believes that if McCain puts forth policies that are attractive to the "current realities" of a dumbed down populace, then magically, hard-core leftists who have rolled in the mud-drenched sweatiness of Republicans as war-mongers and fascists for six years will come flocking to the Republican party -- and if Rush would only change his tune, and tell his listeners the truthy-truth of today's realities versus that dated ideology he bitterly clings to (per Frum) -- the heavens will open, light will shine down, and all will be well. Amen. Posted by: JBean at August 30, 2008 06:14 PM (NVYiD) 47
Nothing new, but at least someone exposed the sources for what they are and corrected the account. I guess we should be thankful for small favors but the headline for the Politico article still reads: "Scholars question Palin credentials" when in fact it should read that Obama supporters question her credentials. Posted by: adk46er at August 30, 2008 06:16 PM (P0G7O) 48
Reagan should have purged the Rockefeller-country-club morons from the party, like Stalin purged the Trotskyites. Instead he made Bush his VP, which he didn't need to do in order to beat Carter. We are still suffering from that decision to this day.

Yes but persuasion based on understanding of an opponent's reasons for thinking the way they do always trumps hoping X will work.

Couple things:
1. The leftists I know are under this weird misconception that right wingers (w00t!) are all closet misogynists. Just bizarre. Well, they only consort with their own so of course they don't know anything real about the other side. I think that's where a lot of this comes from. 2. If I'm the editor of a paper and sane (I know, I know), you as a reporter get automatically fired if you let someone with a monetary interest in a story comment for effect on that story without proper attribution. Hit the road. Posted by: mr.frakypants at August 30, 2008 06:42 PM (ZA24H) 52
