Hurricane Gustav

gustav map 3.jpg

With Hurricane Gustav’s landfall predicted for Monday night or early Tuesday morning, mandatory evacuations orders are being issued and transportation hubs have already been turned into evacuation points for residents of New Orleans.

Unlike 3 years ago when Katrina hit, authorities in Louisiana (led by new Republican Governor Bobby Jindal) are taking a far more active role in preparing for Hurricane Gustav.

New Orleans officials dispatched 40 city buses at 8 a.m. Saturday as part of a plan to evacuate an estimated 30,000 who could not get themselves out of harm's way. Similar scenarios played out in Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines.

State-chartered buses were in place at the Union Passenger Terminal in New Orleans and at other central sites across the suburbs to ferry residents out of low-lying areas en route to shelters in north Louisiana and Tennessee. Elderly and infirm residents were slated to board Amtrak trains to Memphis.

Jeb Tate, spokesman for the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services, said staffers would give each bus and train occupant a once-over to make sure they were fit for the trip, then fit each traveler with a green wristband.

"This is what we practice and train for, " Tate said, following his second trip into City Hall to unload all of his personal items. "We are ready for the duration of this storm."

Also in place at the downtown transit station were rows of Louisiana National Guard vehicles sent from across the state to guide the evacuation process and to protect property in an increasingly empty city. About a dozen news media trucks also had gathered in the parking lot.

In Jefferson Parish, a steady stream of cars and trucks, their headlights beaming, turned onto major thoroughfares and began pouring onto Interstate 10, even though the state's contraflow plan was not expected to go into effect for several more hours.

Despite the fact that the criticism of the federal response has been blown out of all proportions for the last 3 years (including by John McCain) it’s good to see that lessons have been learned and competent leadership seems to be on top of things this time.

Yes, we could have a discussion about how it’s not a federal (or even state or municipal) responsibility to get people the hell out the way of a hurricane but that’s not the world we live in.

As was the case during Katrina, the Times-Picayune in New Orleans is providing great coverage.

Good luck and best wishes to everyone in that area, especially any Gulf Cost morons. We're hoping for the best for you.

Heh, last night one of my Dem friends said mournfully, "How sad is it that Obama is running his campaign so badly that we are now 'Hoping' (he used finger quotes) for a natural disaster to stop the Palin pain."  Then he cursed obama for not picking Hillary!....

Hope the storm turns away from populations.  Good Luck.

2 Floridians need to be paying attention to Hanna and there will most likely be another GOM or East Coast storm in about 2 weeks if long range models progress as shown.  Watch Obama and McCain try to outdo each other on storm damage payouts.

3 Kinda interesting that no one is really talking about the impact that Gustav will have on the price of nat gas.  It is projected to head right into the heart of most prolific fields.

15 Didn't they relocate all of the looters to Houston last time, after they had that big cannibal feast at the stadium? I'm asking because when big floods in '93 washed away all the doublewides that were on the cheap (read as 4" above water table) land here, most never got re-settled.  Are there even any denizens left in the chocolate city who wouldn't bother to walk out now?

Posted by: LF Mayor at August 30, 2008 01:56 PM (AkPCZ)

16 This is exactly why Louisianans fired Gov. Blanco and hired Gov. Jindal, who, like Gov. Palin is one of the new breed of Republican reformers who represent the future of the Republican Party.

This hurricane also ponts up why we should be getting our oil and natural gas from many sources, not just from down here in the Lower 55, but also from Alaska, the 56th state.

23 MamaAJ, you'll either laugh at this or be horrified: my sister and her family and some friends rented a houseboat on Amistad for this Labor Day weekend, and they headed there yesterday from San Antonio, despite all this rain from TS Julio. I have no idea if they went ahead and took it out on the lake.

Luckily, they know to stay away from low areas of town--we saw what TS Charley did to downtown.

Floridians need to be paying attention to Hanna

Floridians tend to pay attention -- we've only had annually-updated hurricane plans in place -- like evac routes, turning public transit into evac transportation, shelters, generators, lists of elderly and sick evacs, etc. for oh, about 25 years.

And if Hanna moves a bit west and hits Texas, or east and hits the panhandle?  Not news, except for the griping of the NO evacuees, of course, whose glorious Labor Day plans will have been spoiled by a government conspiracy -- because whatever happens, it's always a conspiracy -- and they should be reimbursed for the mental anguish of it all!

Hi folks- greetings from your resident weather staff for Moron Central (namely, me writing down what my meteorologist with hurricane emphasis wife tells me).

There's a weakness between the two high pressure systems- one over Texas, one over Florida- that is sucking this storm more or less in the direction of Houma, LA (Terrebonne Parish). Here's a map...

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/2073/parish.htm

We anticipate (we being the National Hurricane Center) a landfall somewhere in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes (Houma and Morgan City, close to Cocodrie. Hurricane-force winds (winds in excess of 75 mph) are likely across the metro New Orleans area. Here's the current forecast map from the NHC...

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200807_5day.html#a_topad

The map more or less shows the storm moving slowly across most of coastal Louisiana... that means that essentially the I-10 corridor is going to take a beating. Here's a storm surge forecast... note that around Lafourche and Terrebonne, you're looking possibly at 12-18 feet of surge, and at Grand Isle (extreme lower Jefferson Parish) maybe 20-25 feet of water. Bear in mind that you'll have 40-50 foot seas offshore, and it just isn't pretty.

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200807_surge.html#a_topad

Now, if you follow the forecast map (which is likely to change), it also means that you'll have inland hurricane conditions at least to Alexandria, and at least inland tropical storm conditions probably to Shreveport. This is where it gets somewhat tricky...

We're hoping for some rain from this system in central Texas. The models are changing somewhat dramatically from what they were saying earlier- the storm appeared to be headed to Dallas and then southwest into central Texas. Here's the latest model run...

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at200807_model.html#a_topad

The hard thing to assess here is what the interaction is going to be with the high over Texas... if our fellow moron Sergei is around, I'd love to hear his take on it (he's a meteorologist as well).

Anyway- if you are along the I-10 corridor- if you have not already begun your evacuation, please get the hell out of there. This is a life-threatening situation.

If you are along the I-49 corridor- please prepare for inland hurricane conditions. The storm will reach the Ark-La-Tex (Shreveport, and the TX/LA/AR border area) as at least a tropical storm. That means you will see hurricane-force winds at least to Alexandria, as well as a likely 5-10 inches of rain.

Finally- please pray for our intrepid Louisiana National Guardsmen who are deployed along I-10 for the landfall of Gustav. In particular, the 2225th Engineers, the 256th Infantry, and the 141st Field Artillery are deployed in the projected path of the storm.

For wall-to-wall coverage of the storm, I recommend watching WWL-TV's live feed at www.wwltv.com for the New Orleans take, and my old station KPLC in Lake Charles for the SW LA take. Check them out at www.kplctv.com.

If anyone has any questions I can answer, please fire away.

Another H-Town Moron here (Camp Logan).  While I'm glad Gus isn't coming up the Ship Channel, the current track is only slightly less scary.  Another big one in NOLA just makes me sick to death.  While I'm glad Bobby Jindal is in charge in Baton Rouge, it seems like Mayor Ray is managing to keep his foot firmly planted in his mouth.

Although Houston's hometown Pravda isn't much to read, Eric Berger (the SciGuy) has a great blog, especially during storm season.  No hype, but no voyeurism (the odd pervy kind that you see in some of the weather blogs...or MSNBC)

http://blogs.chron.com/sciguy/

Keep good thoughts in mind for everybody in South Louisiana, its going to be a tough row to hoe for a while.
