| VP Pick Craziness-FNC/NBC?Others: It's.....Palin.NBC says Romeny and Pawlenty are definitely out. Fox says it's Palin but ABC says as 9am this morning, she's still in Alaska. So if it is her, it doesn't look like she'd make it to Ohio by noon. But...Marc Ambinder playing the flight tracking game has found an interesting private flight from Anchorage to Dayton.Whichever way McCain goes (and it looks like Palin) he and his team has done a great job of knocking The One's speech off the proverbial front page. ![]() I am absolutely delighted by this selection. Once again, John McCain has shown that he is an independent thinker who paints in bold strokes. Sarah Palin is a conservative reformer with executive experience who will bring a breath of fresh air to Washington. She will be an ideal running mate for John McCain, and will make a major contribution to our country's futureUnconfirmed reports claim he went on to say, "If things ever breakdown with my lovely wife Jerri, I'd happily tap VP Palin, if you know what I mean." Congratulations to 8starnorth who was the first to predict Palin in yesterday's prediction thread. Your month's worth of free AoS HQ content begins today. Enjoy! Comments1

I'm very enthused for Palin. I'm actually more excited about McCain with her on the ticket, right now. I don't think I've ever actually had my flagging enthusiasm stoked by a sweet VP choice before. Good job, McCain, if it turns out to be the case. Not only is she a top-notch conservative, she's a woman (if there's anyone out there enough into identity politics to vote for McCain just because he has a female on the ticket), but she's also--um--pretty babe-a-liscious. If nothing else, it certainly can't hurt to have a smart, capable woman who is also very attractive (and very photogenic) on the ticket. And the Democrats will savage her, a reveal a lot of the buried misogyny, and I think it's generally good when the average Joes get to see what hypocrites the folks on the left actually are. Maybe it'll stick, maybe it won't, but the sexism against Palin as McCain's VP pick will be grotesque, I predict. Posted by: Medicinal at August 29, 2008 10:40 AM (jQS9X) 19
That's good, interesting and funny.
Good, because McCain might actually be picking a conservative.
Interesting because it would be the first time in about 8 years that McCain, given the opportunity, didn't stick his finger in my eye (by picking Lieberman or Romney or Huckabee). McCain placating his base? Call
It'll be funny (absolutely hysterically, outrageiously and uproariously funny) because that screech you'll hear if/when he names her will be Hillary Clinton knowing that she will never be President of the United States.
If Obama! wins, he will be the nominee in 4 years. If he wins in 4 years, his VP will run in 8 years. In 8 years, if Obama! wins this year and loses in 4 years, Hillary will be around 70, in 12 years she'll be 70-something. So she's done in that case and why her and Bill are doing their best to torpedo him.
If Obama! loses, she'll be running against either McCain/Palin in 4 years or just Sarah Palin (I don't know if nearly 80-year-old McCain will run again in 4 years) so she won't be the "First Woman" anything.
A joke worthy of this, the funniest end of civilization ever.

Is it possible that McCain's maverickyness against the repubs is a complete headfake to simply get moderate dems to vote for him? Is it possible that he may, if elected, govern as Reagan did? After work today, I will begin the ceremonious "dipping of the balls" in this pick. Posted by: Judd at August 29, 2008 10:53 AM (BXHeE) 49
Why would McCain forfeit one of his best arguments against Obama, the experience argument? A year and a half ago Palin was mayor of a small town (pop. 6,715). Now she's governor of a small state (pop. 650,000, a lot of which is under Indian and Eskimo government anyways) mostly owned by the federal government. Scarborough said picking Palin would be a joke. Smacks of pandering. Tom Ridge would be the best choice, puts PA into play big time. Posted by: galoob at August 29, 2008 10:53 AM (GFaLW) 50

Posted by: wiserbud at August 29, 2008 10:55 AM (IHbof) 51
I'm actually kind of excited.
You can expect her to be really good at balancing power, something we need right now. She likes oil, but doesn't like being bullied by big oil. She didn't abort her down syndrome child. She's hot. She's limited government. If McCain would only promise to actually secure the border BEFORE any type of amnesty, I'd be donating. Posted by: LiveFreeOrDie at August 29, 2008 10:55 AM (ib9Bi) 52
There will be grotesque sexism. Acknowledging that she's a VPILF is sorta-kinda sexist, but not the grotesque kind. Will she really appeal to the disaffected Hillary demographic? She is kind of, um, gorgeous. Which may piss some of those folks off. I've seen it before. What's with the "VPILF? You morons!" comments. Is it a statement against the implicit sexism of confessing the allure of McCain's VP pick, or is it . . . jealousy? Sorry you didn't think of it? Hmm? As a PA citizen, Ridge was an idiot and PA was happy when he went to washington so we didn't have to deal with the idiot anymore. Palin is a great choice. the inexperience is on the bottom of the ticket not like BHO at the top. The case can be easily seen that Palin will have time to learn on the job not as BHO will have to learn from day one. Palin is a conservative with a capital C. The base will rally around her and if MCcain wins she will blunt Hillary in 2012 or 2016. Palin will be the first woman president in AMerica. Her oldest served in Iraq. McCain's son served in Iraq chichhawk argument is done. Posted by: unseen at August 29, 2008 11:01 AM (mQauu) 72
I wouldn't expect McCain to govern as Reagan did, outside of national security. He may hold the line on taxes. I hope he does. But unless she goes wobbly on us, Palin is a great choice to elevate to the national stage. McCain may be imperfect, but he's done conservatives a favor in radically raising Palin's profile . . . on so many levels. Wisebud, the mainstream media have been searching for an unattractive picture, and couldn't find one so they're going to have to Photoshop it for "editorial clarity". Experience? McCain has the experience. Palin has the conservatism. If she's a good debater--something I don't know, but Biden isn't the best, either--she could turn out to be a brilliant pick. Palin is nothing but good for this ticket. I was going to hold my nose and vote for McCain in November. Now, I might actually not have to hold my nose when I pull the lever. And she's really cute. Sorry, but she is. McCain isn't. She really rounds out the ticket. Posted by: Medicinal at August 29, 2008 11:01 AM (jQS9X) 73

Chickenhawk argument will never be done. Liberals will regurgitate that ad infinitum on issues of national security, holding it in front of them like some sort of magic talisman that trumps any argument or rationale and simply says you aren't entitle to say or do anything on issues of military force, because you haven't served. Or you only served in the reserves. Or you may have served for years but didn't actually see combat. See how that works? And when military people who served in combat come out an support the use of military force? The folks who scream "chickenhawk" then change to "warmonger". It's not because the issue (chickenhawkism) actually means anything, it's just that the ends justify the means of ending the debate, and achieving "peace in our time". The inexperience is a big knock and legitimate to bring up as a criticism. Some of the guys at Powerline are iffy on her for the pick just because of that (this cycle, anyway). However, she'll be running for Veep and not actually President and how much can Obama really push that. Also, in no way can she be called another Dick Cheney. From what I've seen of her she is charming and feminine in a tomboyish sort of way. And while we all know who she is, the 80% of people who aren't into political blogs don't, so she's a fresh face. John McCain ran a massive attack squadron with a multi-million $ budget. Obama ran for office. Biden ran his mouth. Posted by: Holdfast at August 29, 2008 11:11 AM (Gzb30) 98
yay for identity politics! Did you say that when Clarence Thomas was nominated for the bench? I don't mind picking ethnic and gender tokens, as long as they are *real* right-wing patriots and not RINOs, sell-outs, etc. Posted by: Curmudgeon at August 29, 2008 11:12 AM (ujg0T) 99
I sure do love the AP spin: She is three years Obama's junior, as well — and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters Well its a good thing that Palin isn't running for president like Obama is. As someone who reads a lot of social con blogs, this pick is superb. A lot of folks assume that social conservatives would simply have fallen in line eventually - sorry, but no. I'm already seeing a ton of people who were on the fence now moving off of it. This was a great pick on many levels. For this first time in this campaign, I am actually excited.

I think they will stay as far away form the "experience" argument as possible. She is the second on the ticket and has just about as much experience (actually more, when you compare being a Governor to a Senator) than the guy at the top of their ticket.
I sincerely doubt they want to open themselves up for that comparison. That would be like Obama dissing McCain for how many years he's been in the Senate, right after choosing Biden to be his running mate, who has been there even longer. And he wouldn't be that dumb, would he? Washington's been talking about our oil addiction for the last thirty years, and John McCain has been there for twenty-six of them. The dems won't even have to go near the fact that she's a woman. They'll attack her on experience and her "extremist" positions. Of course they will. It'll mostly be the far-left that goes all misogynistic--Air America, political cartoonists, DailyKossacks and so on, but it will happen. If for no other reason than to make sure no more uppity Republican women try to break that glass ceiling and get out of the Democrat kitchen. Obama campaign, mainstream Democrats will stick to "extremist" positions. But the misogyny of the left will manifest, and with a great deal of enthusiasm. Just a few examples you'll see very near the mainstream: 1. Hmm. Cindy McCain is getting a little old. And that Palin is awfully cute. 2. Beautiful = stupid. 3. She's very photogenic, and that's why McCain picked her, not her policy experience. 4. Well, she's got the looks, but she don't got the smarts. 5. She used her looks to get ahead. They may be able to find some picture from some summer at the beach years ago where she was in a bikini, and get it out everywhere. This won't actually helpt them, but they'll do it. 6. She'll be the first VP where her desk is under the presidents! Ba-dum-dum! 7. Her selection is a failed attempt to get Hillary voters, and it won't work! It's a cynical gambit for the female vote! Thus, McCain thinks women are stupid and easily lead around. I think I've almost already heard that one. 8. Political cartoons where she's drawn out like a prostitute, stripper, something like that. 9. VPILF will make it into a liberal political cartoon. VPs Gone Wild. That kind of thing. Watch for it. Give me some time, I could think of some more. Posted by: Medicinal at August 29, 2008 11:15 AM (jQS9X) 104

Did you say that when Clarence Thomas was nominated for the bench? I don't mind picking ethnic and gender tokens While I don't care for the word token, I do believe that some of the most outstanding conservative thinkers happen to be "tokens"--Clarence Thomas is a brilliant jurists. One of my favorites. His opinions generally devestate, whether he's in the majority or the minority. Margaret Thatcher was the British Ronald Reagan. My favorite conservative, ever, is Thomas Sowell. While identity politics may play into this decision, the fact is, Sarah Palin is a great choice. And she's ben a solid conservative, and may well turn out to be a great conservative thinker, as well. You obviously know absolutely nothing about Palin, based on this ignorant remark. She's more conservative than McCain and this sets her up to run in 2012 or 2016, bring the party back to the right. Medicinal - yeah, but it's pretty clear her husband could kick John McCain's ass. Interesting question - how will her husband factor into the campagn? She's obviously not the first woman politician to run as VP, but she is married to a very photogenic "regular guy", who is bluntly a lot better looking than McCain, Obama or Biden. How much will the campaign use him. Also, now both members of the GOP ticket have kids who have served or will serve in Iraq. At worst that neutralizes the issue (Biden't son) - at best it is an advantage but I don't think a pissing contest on this point makes anyone look good. Still this is a MOM sending her son off to war. Posted by: Holdfast at August 29, 2008 11:28 AM (Gzb30) 124

Granted, I'm a conservative, pro-life woman, but I now have a girl crush:
On April 18, 2008, Palin gave birth to her second son, Trig Paxson Van Palin, who has Down syndrome. She returned to the office three days after giving birth. Palin refused to let the results of prenatal genetic testing change her decision to have the baby. "I'm looking at him right now, and I see perfection," Palin said. "Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking, in our world, what is normal and what is perfect?" Posted by: Scout at August 29, 2008 11:31 AM (h/4DY) 127
Well stunned again. I do have to say though that I find it amazing that both Obama and McCain allowed so much outside to affect their vp picks.
She is a good pick though. Alaska is her only real knock. The inexperience angle, it actually helps. McCain has basically shown where a candidate of Obama's stature belongs on a national ticket. Plus Biden's attacks just went out the window. He cuts too hard and the PUMAS will run for the hills. This might night change any votes but it does force them to be gentlemanly, think GWB in 1984 with Ferraro. All the pressure in the VP debate is on Biden now, after all he should be able to beat a little girl right? Small town mayor, more executive experience ya mean? Go with that angle Dems, that will help in Ohio, Pennsylvaine, Indiana, Michigan and Virginia. This would not have been my pick, but it's not a bad pick. Man the dummy McCain continues to disappoint me. What an idiotic choice! This women does NOT have any of qualifications to be VP or potentially the PRESIDENT of the United States of America (has anyone noticed how old McGeezer is?; a hot-airhead like Palin has excellent chance of becoming President if McCain wins). For God's sake she's got a journalism degree!!? I can't think of a group dumber airheads than the idiots we see everyday on MSNBC or CNN (who have journalism degrees). She's also a hothead wacko maverick, where's the balance in this ticket? What the Hell does she know about Geopolitics, the US economy, etc. McCain may have a good soul and heart but he's mentally weak (almost as stupid as GWBush). It make me sick to watch the Greatest country in the world (America) get weaker and weaker, because the republican base and establishment is too stupid pick qualified, competent leadership. We need leaders that can outthink potential adversaries, not priveleged shoot-from-hip loudmouth Jocks and Prom Queens like McCain & Palin, whose every move can be predicted by America's enemies.

Team McCain is running a pretty decent campaign with a few brilliant strokes right now. The Palin pick? At the most cynical level, it's a terrific political choice on the eve of Team Obama's dissing of Hillary! and PUMAs. Is Palin a superficially political choice alone to capitalize on the DNC's internal squabble? Is it purely identity politics? Will moderate liberals really abandon the philosophical Left for Palin just because she has X-chromosomes inspite of her strong conservatism? In that regard, it's a very interesting choice with some risks depending on the spin... and boy will it be spun. The MSM will surely be engaging the hyperdrive.
The upside? Palin actually does engage disgruntled women moderates. The pick's timing kneecaps the DNC's post convention celebration. A conservative is added to the ticket, and she surely speaks to the conservative side. That's a real boost for Team McCain. The downside? Will she exhibit adequate experience, the hammer McCain has had to bludgeon Team Obama? Structurally, the GOP ticket is traditional and balanced, which is an edge. An old hand tops the ticket with a relative understudy at the side. A relative RINO is enhanced buttressed by an apparently real conservative. Compared to the Donks who have an inverted ticket with Left and Lefter? Political and demographic edge to the GOP. All in all, a decent choice. It wasn't my top choice but I surely understand why McCain opted for Palin. This will give the MSM conniption fits, too, which is always a bonus since it unbalances its memes. Her introduction was excellent and her record, while relatively short, looks sound in that she covered quite a few bases and kept to her conservative roots. The Democrats should be a bit unnerved. The NYT and MSNBC? Keep the defibrillators charged. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at August 29, 2008 01:08 PM (sI5Ho) 156

This VP choice is NOT a case of pandering identity politics. This is John McCain picking someone with PROVEN character, intelligence, competence, integrity, dynamism, leadership and chutzpah. Those are the things that are most important for a leader, and they cannot be learned on the job--either you have 'em or you don't. Sarah Palin's got 'em. People like that are exceedingly rare in American public office. John McCain had the good sense to spot her and get her on board! I could not be happier with this choice. McCain/Palin '08!
