Jimmy Carter: McCain "Milking" POW Experiences

Former president Jimmy Carter called Republican presidential candidate John McCain a "distinguished Naval officer," but said the Arizona senator has been "milking every possible drop of advantage" from his time served as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
...
But he focused heavily on McCain, explaining how he was bewildered to see him during a conversation earlier this month with pastor and author Rick Warren at the Saddlebrook Church in Lake Forest, Calif. Carter said that whether the question was about religion, domestic or foreign affairs, every answer came back to his five-and-a-half years as a POW.
"John McCain was able to weave in his experience in a Vietnam prison camp, no matter what the question was," said Carter, a 7-year Naval officer who served aboard submarines. "It's much better than talking about how he's changed his total character between being a senator, a kind of a maverick at the time, and his acquiescence in the last few months with every kind of lobbyist pressure that the right wing Republicans have presented to him."

He also snipes at Joe Lieberman, and hopes the Democrats will win enough Senate seats to no longer have to deal with Lieberman.

13 Carter is right, Mccain is talking about being a POW. It's amazing though, that anyone thinks this is wrong of Mccain. It's a hugely important part of his life. Obama talks about how he didn't go to Wall Street and became a community organizer MORE than Mccain talks about being a POW.

Imagine if the Dem were POW... we wouldn't be allowed to question it being brought up like this. Bush certainly wouldn't be whining about it. I think there are still some voters out there who aren't aware enough of Mccain's history. If it's reasonably germane, Mccain should bring it up. Middle of the road voters realize that some things get repeated, and that Mccain has a long record (and isn't merely a POW). Only far leftists really have a hostile reaction to Mccain's history.

when Carter took office, his solution to unemployment was to create bullshit govt jobs for everybody. I took a job as a a CETA (Comprehensive Employment Training Act) employee while waiting to join my local fire dept. after taking a competitive entrance exam. The fire station that I was assigned to had 2 janitors and a watchman to answer the phones. these jobs were previously done by the on-duty FF's without complaint and had never been identified as a burden in need of correction. Police, Sanitation and just about every other city agency had a similar program. The program lasted a couple of years and was abandoned. That in a nutshell tells you what an Obama presidency will resemble.

How they don't even begin to try to comprehend what it must have been like to be captured by the North Viet Communists, to be bayoneted in the stomach and have your arm smashed with a rifle butt, to be tortured and have your broken limbs bashed again and your ribs smashed, to be denied medical aid and then given the most rudimentary treatment, be kept in stinking hot, insect-ridden solitary confinement for two years, suffer dysentery and hunger, attempt suicide because you couldn't bear it any longer, and yet refuse offers to be freed ahead of your fellow prisoners.

Jimmy Carter was 18 in 1942. He did not enlist, instead he wrangled his way into the Naval Academy until he graduated in 1946. In 1953, in the middle of the Korean conflict he resigned from the Navy. I do not see how he is qualified to judge John Mccain who placed himself in harms way in service of his country and paid a dear price for it.
