Tonight's McCain Ad Will Congratulate Obama

Racist condescension, of course.

Script:

"Job Well Done"

"Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America. Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed, so I wanted to stop and say congratulations.

"How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. [Racist attack!]

"Tomorrow we'll be back at it, but tonight, Senator, Job Well Done."

Meh.

Too much "stealth racism," not enough overt racism.

Here's the ad.

Joe Biden had an ad set to go out also but fate intervened and he was picked as the VP nominee.  Here is a snippet from the ad:

"Senator Obama, congratulations on being our Party's nominee.  To have an  African-American who is so well-spoken representing us is historic."

"Your message of hope and change resonate with all Americans and not just you people"

You know when someone over at Hot Air suggested the ad might be something like this I thought it was a stupid idea. I've flip flopped on that now. This is brilliant. McCain will look gracious, classy, and very above the fray at the exact moment he is being ripped a new one by Obama.

Brilliant!

16 McCain is also going to have more Asian narrators for his campaign ads. They'll pronounce "Barack" as Balack, subliminally pointing out to listeners that Obama is a black man.

Why?

Because McCain is a racist, that's why.

18 That was brilliant.  Between that and the VP speculation, McCain is stealing a bunch of thunder from Obama's convention.  McCain has some really good strategists.

On this day?

All of the below happened on Aug 28th.

1963 - March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom: Martin Luther King, Jr. gives his I Have a Dream speech.

1964 - The Philadelphia race riot begins.

1968 - Riots in Chicago, Illinois, during the Democratic National Convention.

1981 - The National Centers for Disease Control announce a high incidence of Pneumocystis and Kaposi's sarcoma in gay men. Soon, these will be recognized as symptoms of an immune disorder, which will be called AIDS.

1982 - The first Gay Games are held in San Francisco.

1990 - Iraq declares Kuwait to be its newest province.

1991 - Collapse of the Soviet Union: Ukraine declares its independence from the Soviet Union.

1991 - Collapse of the Soviet Union - Mikhail Gorbachev resigns as Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party.

2008 - See first line of the Batttle Hymn of the Republic.   A day that will live in infamy, indeed.

I do agree, as a political tactic, it's pretty slick.  After all the attacks last night (and probably some tonight), McCain responds by......taking the high road and congratulating Obama.

47 McCain's team has been on fire lately, taking the fight to their opponent without exposing their own weaknesses.  There were some good jabs thrown by the Dem speakers the other day, but now that Obama and the Dems have gone first and tipped their hand Team McCain can react and counter.  OODA Loop, indeed.

I'm pretty convinced now that Clinton and McCain were the only people who could have stood in Obama's way.  Astoundingly enough, the Clintons, with all their savvy, got outmaneuvered.  As much as I lack enthusiasm for much of McCain's policies, his wiliness and his own resilience to substantive criticism (not that it has prevented people from trying) seem to be working so far.

Sometimes you can't get the shutout and just have to settle for eking out a win.  McCain'll do.  We can try again in 2012 if he loses or 2016 if he wins, but the most important thing is to win as much as possible.  If this means that the Dems run someone with a clue on foreign policy, has some form of relevant experience, and isn't a scumbag next time around then that helps us as well, as weakening the socialists' grip on one of our major parties (yes, the Dems, for those confused) is good for everyone.

51 At this point, Obama's only move is to condemn Mccain.  He cannot run on his own merit, so he must try to tap into Bush's unpopularity and attack Mccain.

Attacking him as old, while smirking.  Attacking him as having forgotten how many homes he has, while smirking.  Attacking him as wrong on the issues and divisive.

Meanwhile, Mccain, who is laughed at for not having as much money as Obama (at least this is the popular move), is spending at least hundreds of thousands of dollars congratulating Obama for being the first black nominee.

There is no downside to this ad.  Mccain gets attention during Obama's convention.  Only the sickos that will never vote GOP will really believe Mccain doesn't genuinely mean to be nice here.  And there's a real potential that the middle american voter will be annoyed at all the insults and smirking and notice that Mccain was reaching out to be nice.

Obama is defining himself as the anti-Bush... except most folks know that Mccain isn't Bush.  Obama can refrain from being negative, but there is no way for him to win without being negative.  Mccain has made a very good move.  And yeah, it seems pretty damn obvious, except no one actually does this stuff.  Middle America eats this up (as they should, I think it's nice too).

from ABC Political Punch..

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe -- who did not know the content of the ad until we read him the script -- just told us that the McCain ad is "a very nice gesture. We wish more of his ads took that tone, but it's a very nice gesture."

Plouffe said the Obama campaign would run a similar ad next week congratulating McCain on his nomination.

Posted by: JAFKIAC at August 28, 2008 05:33 PM (HqtPo)

I think the notion of condescension is a bit overstated. McCain's doing the same thing Bush did when Pelosi was named Speaker of the House. He congratulated her publicly, and acknowledged history. I see McCain acknowledging history- even if Obama is antithetical to everything conservatives hold dear, it is nonetheless a historic time for this country.

And, just to concur with everyone else who's said this already, he's taking the high road and being a good guy. Again, are you going to call the guy a fucker because he's being nice? See how far that gets you.

56 The move also shows class- Which Americans have not seen alot of form the dem convention. Mccain at this point is toying with Obama. Oh yeah- kudos to the McCain campaign for maintaining the initiative. Even when Obama's had a nice couple of days in terms of momentum, this ad continues to keep McCain on the offensive and defuse a lot of attacking criticism from Obama. If it is taken as it is intended, then what does obama do?

It's polite, keeps mccain in the news on the same night of Obama's Coronation, AND! it leaves Obama open to attack at the end of the RNC if Obama doesn't respond in kind, meanwhile any "bump" obama has will already have leveled out, and McCain will be in the upslope of his bump.

So does Obama say "good job old boy," lending his support to the McCain bounce?  Or does he do nothing, leaving McCain the opportunity to shrug and say Obama wasn't gracious, or Obama can go on the Attack Making him look like Dick.

It works very well tacticly, as well as making him look like a class act.

Posted by: wickedpinto at August 28, 2008 05:39 PM (ul7te)

Thought provoking analysis, wicketpinto -- very.

Posted by: Christoph at August 28, 2008 05:44 PM (hawOV)

61 I don't like it, here's why.

1) The MSM/DNC will say thank you and use it to bash McCain's supporters, similar to JAFKIAC's comment above, the Obama campaign will use it to say that they McCain's supporters weren't so nasty and negative.

2) It bothers me because it brings up bad memories of Jack Kemp thanking Algore for not lumping him with the reast of the GOP rabble, which is something I can see McCain also doing.

Posted by: Bart at August 28, 2008 05:44 PM (/EpPq)

62 Come on, people, this is how the game is played.

It is good will now and then later, bring on the Ayers quotes.

I mean that in a nice way.

Posted by: Scout at August 28, 2008 05:49 PM (h/4DY)

Bart, I don't think Mccain will go that route (though he probably wants to, his staff is stuffed with the smart guys from Bush's staff that won't let him).

This, on its own, is awesome.  Even if Obama replies in kind, Mccain actually gets extra credit, and Obama is a follower.  And that's Obama's BEST option.

HA!

So long as Mccain doesn't denounce Ayers ads, and Mccain keeps noting that Obama is not ready to lead us against Russia and Iran, then we're going to keep making progress.  Mccain's domestic agenda is probably going to be popularly announced tomorrow with his VP.  And it's going to beat Biden's doom and gloom when our economy is surging.

85 I should rephrase, Scout.  This ad is targeting those who are in the middle of the road... perhaps they think a lot of the world controversies are too complicated to worry about, rarely watch or read the news, and just want to leave those issues to good leaders.  they think it would be cool for America to have a black prez, and are glad a black man can make it far, but can be convinced that Obama is not qualified to make tough decisions.

86 We like it!  He's old, though! Is it true that Barack sang backup on a Stevie Wonder album?  We read that somewhere!

It's almost like my favorite quote from Albus Dumbledore:  "No, no, these are manners."

88 I think I just like the fact that a man who survived years in a Viet Cong prison hellhole, is smiling and paying a compliment to his sworn opponent during a moment of repose. It suggests to me that once he goes back on offense, he's gonna bring some mil-spec whupass to the party.

So I hope.

Although I really like the ad and the tactics behind it, it does have the potential to backfire, and badly.  I hope and pray that before this ad was cut, McCain personally called Obama and expressed the same sentiments.  If not, if I were Obama, I'd say the following:

"Many of you may have seen the advertisement John McCain purchased today, and distributed over the internet, in which he congratulates me for accepting the nomination.  Although I appreciate the congratulations, I wonder why he didn't save the hundreds of thousands of dollars he spent on the ad by simply picking up the phone and calling me.   I'll let you figure out why."

92 angler, while Obama will say whatever he wants, Mccain has personally congratulated Obama over the phone quite a while ago.

Mccain is not full of shit when he portrays himself as a nice guy who reaches across the aisle and tries to be collegial with democrats.  It's not even possible for the democrats to assert otherwise.  Biden and both Clintons had nice things to say about Mccain this week.  Biden made clear that Mccain is indeed one of the good guys, and they best they can do is say he's wrong on policy.  If Obama tries to portray Mccain as a cynical bitter asshole, there are too many ways to prove that wrong.
