Fox Exclusive: Rick Davis Confirms McCain's Made His Decision

Tea leaves:

Pawlenty cancels all media appearances for next few days;

It's not Fred, alas;

and Romney's sister (?) gets a Secret Service security sweep, while Allah worries (as I do) McCain is hell-bent to pick Liebs.

Social cons warn that McCain will face a fight if he does that:

One possible strategy is a revolt by some of the 18 state delegations who supported either Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee—and who have not yet turned over to McCain.

Those delegations could—and sources say, likely would–revolt against Leiberman and put in their own recommendation. In the nomination process, a candidate needs five delegations supporting the nomination.

1 Will a Jedi mind trick get McCain to pick Palin?

It's worth a try.

2 FWIW...Pawlenty says he's going to be at the Minnesota State Fair tomorrow.   I don't think it means anything but that's the latest from him.

5 I'm not a social con and I like Lieberman, but I am not a republican so I can run democrats for the presidential platform. And even if it turns out not to be true, I am pissed off that it was even considered and that McAsshole did not come out and disavow it sooner.

And Huckabee needs to keep his damn hatred of Mormons to his self.

I read a comment from an Alaskan on another blog that Palin is supposed to be handing out the new Alaska state quarters at the Alaska State Fair on Saturday. Can't find an original source for that, though.

I would imagine a gig like that is pretty easy to cancel if you get picked for Veep, though.

7 Maybe we can get Fred! as SecDef or SecState or a seat on the SCOTUS.

Because Liebs will get you the middle two-thirds of the electorate, leaving the 1/6th of the fringe left and the 1/6th of the fringe right to bitch-and-moan.

10 It's clear that the bloom came off the Messiah's rose a good while back. And then he made what has to be the worst vice presidential pick in history to boot.

Why is it that I feel supremely confident that McCain's going to see this as an opportunity to go all Mavericky and commit a major unforced error in the process?

I think the next 48 hours are the perfect time to put on and maintain an AoSHQ-certified appropriate blood-alcohol level to ride out both the Obamessiah's speech and McCain's veep pick. Cheers, morons.

If HRC can support Obama even after choosing someone else, Romney will grit his teeth and do the same for McCain / anyone-else, even Liebermann.

Huckabee on the other hand is sure to extort concessions or make a scene. Does McCain want his own maverick giving his administration drama? hah! Mavericks never do.

Palin is fresh off proving she can't get the job done even in Alaska, much less in America should McCain leave office early. But by '12 she should be good to go.

Jindal is what you get when you combine the least appealing properties of Palin and Huckabee.

Pawlenty seems the safe choice although I don't know squat about him.

15 Joe is a smart pick if it leaves only the die-hard and very lefty Dems remaining to vote for Barrius Gaius Flatulus Obamicus, and if it doesn't make Republicans and Conservatives seize the Capital in armed insurrection.

20 David Ross,

You say that Palin recently proved she can't get the job done in Alaska.  What does that mean?  As far as I know, she's doing a great job in Alaska, with great polls and a record of cleaning up house.  I think she'd do an outstanding job cleaning up in DC, though as VP I don't know if she would have that job.

What specific job of the Governor of Alaska do you beleive Palin recently failed at?

Pawlenty is indeed the safe and boring chocie.  I have no problem with him or Romney, but unless there's something I don't know about Palin, a person with several years of executive experience including about two as governor of Alaska, I think she's also a credible choice.

Were I Mccain, I would announce Leibermann as my Secretary of State.  I would pick a chick as VP because I don't give a shit about avoiding ID politics anymore.  I'd be chosing among Firornia, Palin, and KBH, and probably going with Palin.

21 I wish it was Romney, but since most of us like him, Mavrick wont' pick him. It will probably be Pawlenty, he's a "safe" pick and he's just like McCain....yawn.

What do you mean Fox news confirms McCain made his decision?

He's suppose to announce it tommorow.

25 I'd really like an answer to a question I posed months agoa when all the shit-sammich eating morons were berating those like me who felt McCain was just a leap too far to the left to vote for.

What is your bridge too far? Which VP choice will have you sitting out the election? Or is there no limit to your appetite?

Anyone?

26

Maverick,

Palin or Hutchinson.  Please.  I've reconciled myself with having to vote for you.  I've actually worked up some enthusiasm about the prospect.  Don't blow it.

John, pick a chick.  I know a renowned swordsman like yourself wants to.  Cripes, pick Snowe if you absolutely have to (although she is essentially Lincoln Chaffee with a vagina).

You can do this. You can get some PUMAs, show a softer, gentler side of the GOP, and, if abortion is absolutely your thing, demonstrate with Palin or Hutchinson that you can be a woman and pro-life.  Think about it, totally remake the GOP for the next 20 years - has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

Don't roll out any white males, giving the Democrats another opportunity to sniff their own farts and tell everyone how the Republican's don't have diversity on their side.

You can do this.

Shill: the job not getting done is the job of booting Young and/or Stevens from Congress. Palin actually tried using her clout against Young; the ongoing chad-hunt in that state proves she has exactly as much swing in Alaska as does Ron Paul (who endorsed him).

Also, Palin's under investigation. Something to do with wanting her brother in law fired, and misusing her office to do it.

Posted by: David Ross at August 28, 2008 04:45 PM (GwV+j)

28 McCain's a maverick (sort of), not a lunatic.  He ain't gonna pick Liebs.  Chuckleheads, stand down.

Posted by: Bart at August 28, 2008 04:56 PM (/EpPq)

30 I don't see how it can be Lieberman.  Apparently there are lots of states where the Republican nominee has to be registered as a Republican by a certain (already passed) date.  My money's on Pawlenty, though I think Palin would be a better choice.

#27 - Palin's scandal

You know, there are scandals that hurt and scandals that don't.

This one, while I don't like it as a guy, I don't think it hurts with women too bad.

I think a lot of women would look at her, trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired after the nasty divorce adn say "You go girl".  They'd never say it in public of course.

hey Scout - I said she was Lincoln Chaffee with a vagina.

But the bottom line is that McCain has to pick the person who will best give him the chance to win.  I'd rather have a Lieberman or Snowe VP than ex-Vice Presidential Candidate Romney working at an investment bank.

Posted by: headhunt23 at August 28, 2008 05:20 PM (OMCBg)

35 Lieberman's only in the mix to lower expectations and get attention for the announcement.

Huckabee's only in the mix because he's a pain in the ass and he, along with his 19 supporters, won't shut the hell up. Plus McCain owes him that much for going after Mitt.

Pawlenty or Mitt would be the best choice, followed by a chick. It sounds like Kay Billy's name came up because, while Palin is attractive for some reasons, she isn't ready. And she's from Alaska (Yeah, it's part of the Union. I googled it).

38 Someone asked where would I (as a McCain as the best of a bad lot voter) draw the line on McCain.

Before the surge started succeeding so well Lieberman would have been my cut point, now he is out.  Since I could give a crap about pro-life / pro-choice as long as he choices a fiscal conservative who is strong on national defense I am OK with it.  That is really as specific as I can get at this point other than to say I am really hoping it's Palin.

40 I don't know what more Palin could have done to take down Stevens and Young up in Alaska - those Republican corruptocrats have massive cash reserves. The Alaskan voters watch American Idol like everyone else, and most know jack about politics. Doesn't Stevens have a major airport named after him?

McCain set himself up with his ad criticizing Obama for not picking Hillary when it was such a close race.  Romney supporters would rightly assume then that the same logic should be applied to the republican ticket.

I don't think it will be Romney.

McCain is doiong such a good job attacking Obama it only makes sense that he'd screw it up by picking someone completely unacceptable to most republicans just the way he periodically tweaks republicans with amnesty talk.

Posted by: SAM at August 28, 2008 06:05 PM (kBeDi)

43 David Ross, I thought you were probably talking about Alaska's senate primary.

I don't think Palin could reasonably have done more than she did.  Sadly, Alaska has a fear of freshmen in congress because the feds have a history of fucking with Alaska in a way other states don't deal with.

Palin did make it very hard for Young... but if you're an Alaskan, you should vote for the democrat.

Whining about Palin for not having more impact on a democratic election is silly.  Alaskan voters were well informed of the issues, and Palin endorsed the right guy (who made an amazing effort considering the giant he was fighting).

If that's a failure of Palin's, then your standards are just impossible to meet.  Every single candidate represents an area that has elected a douche recently.  Name me one that doesn't.

Posted by: ▄█▀ █■█ █ █▄ █▄ at August 28, 2008 06:15 PM (8jYMc)

44 SAM, Mccain didn't win a close race, buddy.  Clinton won the popular vote and frankly was just a much more credible president than Obama.  They fought and fought till the end.

Romney dropped out of the election, and Clinton didn't.  How did Mccain set himself up?  The GOP is united behind Mccain, despite the media's best efforts to lie about it.  9 out of 10 Bush voters are voting for Mccain before the convention, for God's sake.

No, Romney may be an ok choice (he is a governor and CEO, but he's also a flipper of the worst sort, and plastic, and easily painted as rich, and plastic, and plastic)  I like Romney only because he would piss off Fuckabee.

I've been looking for a video clip for years. Back in 2000?, Biden and the Fred held a townhall style debate/discussion that was a delight. Fred, calm amd firm, and Biden hopping around like a little cartoon dog, drooling all over himself. Seriously, years later and I still remember it.
