Officials: Obama Assassination Plot Never Happened

I was wondering why the national organizations weren't reporting on this.

They were smart to be more skeptical than the local news channels that hyped the story. Turns out it most likely is a meth-fueled fantasy.

A half dozen federal security officials have told The Mouth that the supposed plot to assassinate Barack Obama during his Thursday acceptance speech in Denver by four armed dope suspects was considered a bunch of hooey.

Tharin Robert Gartrell, 28, and several other drug suspects linked to white supremacist groups were busted Sunday after Aurora, Colo., cops saw him driving a rented pickup erratically.

"What's in plain view? Guns and a bulletproof vest," a federal agent assigned to the Democrats' Denver nominating convention told The Mouth. "One rifle had a scope sighted in at 750 yards. But he said they werent his guns."

Cops went looking for Gartrell's pals at two hotels. At the second hotel, their knock on a door prompted a suspect to leap out his sixth-story window and break his ankle in the fall, sources said. During interrogation, one of the suspects dimed out a buddy for allegedly threatening to kill Obama, officials said.

"They all had meth with them. There is no evidence of a plot other than one guy's word, and meth heads aren't that reliable (with the truth)," the federal agent said.

Confederate Yankee suggests the left is hyping this non-story for reasons both obvious and inobvious.

They meant to say Bush, not Obama - so it would have been a non-story. But, meth heads don't work too well.

But then, only meth heads can leap out of a 6th story window and only break an ankle.

Not *just* meth heads... people on PCP could probably do that, too, then punch through a windshield and break every bone in their hand.

One rifle had a scope sighted in at 750 yards.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't both a literal and figurative "long shot"?

5 Yeah, I find the report that someone only suffered a broken ankle jumping out a 6th floor window unbelievable.

Word, and won't feel it for hours.  There was this guy once that...

The hell you say!  I am shocked, shocked to hear that!  It's like on Cops when the massive tweaker is all "that's not mine" when the cops pull out the pound of meth from his backpack.  It's his roommate's, duh.

8 How can you tell by looking at what distance a scope is sighted in.

What I'd like to know is this:  How did the cops KNOW the rifle was sighted in for 750 yards?  Did it have a post-it-note on the stock saying "OK for 750 yds"?  There are some specialized scopes made for individual loadings (for example, the 168 grain FMJBT loading from Hornady in .308 Winchester), but even if you dial one of those into a specific range, it just gets you to the point where you can hit the figurative "side of a barn".  You've still got to work to get it on target from there.  You can't tell what range a rifle is set for just by looking at it.  Unless it's an old Enfield or Springfield 1903 with the sliding tangent sight set for 750 yards, but unless Matthew Quigley was among the tweakers arrested, I doubt that this shot was going to be taken with iron sights.

My guess?  Some tweaker in the bunch that got arrested was trying to sound like a "gun guy", and told the cops about his custom sniper rifle that was "sighted in for 750 yards".

And as an extra point of contention, a 750 yard shot would be well within the radius of TIGHT coverage by the Secret Service.  When Reagan came to Winterset back in the fall of '85, the SS boys covered all the windows within 4 blocks of the Courthouse square with paper, and made it clear that any movement of that paper would be met with a hail of slugs from their Uzis.  They welded down the manhole lids within a quarter mile of the Courthouse, and they gave everyone the closest thing to a prostate exam whenever they wanted to get up onto the square to see the speech.  I realize that you've gotta take the shot from a range where you're comfortable, but the odds of these guys finding a shooting position within 750 yards of the speaker's podium at Mile High Stadium was akin to them winning the lottery.

I'm glad these slugs are off the street, but they were about as much of a threat to Obama as Man-made Global Warming.

13 This is typical journalistic firearms expertise.750 yds. Gimme' a break.
You'd think at least a few journalist would have gone deer hunting with a rifle at some point in their misbegotten lives. Several commenters in the previous methead thread wrote accurately about the ballistics and ability needed to make a shot like that.

My two cents. Quite a few American and Canadian riflemen could make that shot, on paper , under range conditions, with a good minute of angle rifle. Shooting at a 'person' under real world conditions is a whole 'nother ball game. That's why military and police snipers attend dedicated schools with quality instruction and put 1,000's or rounds downrange in practice.
