Gallup & Rasmussen: McCain Up, Obama Down

It's too early for this to include any impact from the convention, but it's fair to say that Joe Biden hasn't electrified the country.

How did Michelle Obama's speech play? I don't know; I can't separate my partisan side from my objective side to be able to tell. I also can't put myself in the mind of someone who doesn't know much about politics and who is open to the notion of "hope and change" transforming the country into Jesus' thousand-year kingdom on an accelerated schedule; i.e., I can't will myself to be a fucking moron.

Dick Morris can, though, and says the speech was a hit:

MAGIC WORDS: 'I LOVE THIS COUNTRY'

By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

Published in The New York Post on August 26, 2008.

DENVER

'I love this country": Those are the magic words that Michelle Obama said at the Democratic National Convention last night.

They're the words we've wanted to hear from her ever since we saw her say that she was proud of her country "for the first time in my adult life" now that her husband was winning primaries en route to the White House.

Did she buy into the American dream? Was she part of our national aspiration - or part of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's twisted view of us? Those were the questions we wanted answered. Last night, she answered - loud and clear.

We've watched the scripted familial intimacies Hillary Clinton always shares from the podium and wondered if they had been focus grouped. We've watched Theresa Heinz Kerry's vaulting ambition at the 2004 Democratic convention and wondered if she was really human.

But this year we saw an eloquent, sincere woman speaking of her dreams and aspirations. She gave a speech that sounded real with anecdotes that seemed genuine.

Michelle Obama last night became a political plus, not a problem.

We worried that Barack was an elitist. But her speech made it clear that she wasn't born as part of the elite and that he wasn't either. Her genuine working-class stories transcended race and rang true with Americans.

He (and his wife) then go on, though, to express doubts about how much to buy into these claims.

So I don't know. To me she seemed stagey and very much acting; her fake chuckles and feigned humility were a bit transparent. All I learned was that the Obamas:

1) Got married

2) Had kids

3) Possessed a truck at one point (which I'm guessing is a "racial codeword" for a Volvo SUV)

And of course 4) Did a lot of left-wing agitation they call community activism, but we're supposed to consider that a middle-class, Heartland sort of activity. Like the 4H Club or, I guess, mixed Cornhole leagues.

So let me tap into the wisdom of the masses. If you can channel your inner idiot, or if you've spoken to friends or family members who subscribe to the Moron Faith, what do you honestly think? Pretend you don't know she's a confirmed lefty hoodwinking us; did it play or not?

A Bit on Ayers: From John Fund.

McCain aides say they are perplexed by the Obama ad. "It is misleading," McCain campaign strategist Steve Schmidt told National Review. "It states the McCain campaign is running an ad on the issue and it's not. Obama described Ayers as just a guy who lives in his neighborhood. We know that's not accurate."

And today, supposedly, the U of I will release those withheld Ayers/Obama documents, at least the ones they haven't "lost" or "inadvertently destroyed."

It's this kind of thing that really makes me wonder. If the American public has some knowledge of this, and some memory of the Wright fiasco, is it really just enough for Michelle Obama to say "I love this country," which every analyst predicted she'd do, because she needed to do so for political reasons?

And Saul Alinksy Too: Obama went to work for an Alinksy protoge; Michelle Obama quoted Alinsky's Rules for Radicals in last night's speech.

How dumb is the American public? Hopefully not quite dumb enough for the Obamas' purposes.

Compare her convention speech to the live comments she made several months ago about being proud for the first time of her country.  You don't have to be a high-end functioning moron to realize she's undergone months of political re-education therapy from image consultants to say the right things last night.  A side by side split screen or even that ridiculous pop-up video stuff could be used to good effect by the GOP in response.

4 I think it was very successful. She was charismatic and she touched on many issues for which people have dragged her into the spotlight (patriotism, her jobs).

Let's be clear. There are very few points to be gained by a First Lady's speech. Very few people are so wishy-washy as to have their minds made up by Michelle Obama's convention speech. Really, the only thing that could happen is that she could lose points for her husband. Think of the damage that would have been done if she came out and had a little slip. But that's all this was about. If she makes it through--great, no bounce. If she flubs it--whoa, paging Senator Clinton.

As far as "stagey and acting", I disagree. She did much better than Laura Bush. Think back to how much trouble Mrs. Bush had reading the teleprompters. The same problems have been in all of Mrs. Bush's speeches: poor cadence, you can tell she's nervous, and she usually ends each phrase with a back-of-the-throat tic. By contrast, Michelle Obama had cadence down and seemed very comfortable speaking.

Posted by: Gabriel Malor at August 26, 2008 02:22 PM (1Ug6U)

5 She came across as a normal woman with a husband she's proud of and two absolutely adorable kids. If that's all you know about her, you'd think, 'okay, I get that'.  If you only heard talk about her more radical (dare I say truer) nature, you'd have to wonder how true it was and maybe write off such talk as 'politics'.

I think it played as well as it could have and it certainly didn't hurt Obama in the least.

That said, how much good can it do? Ultimately, I think her influence is negligible. I mean a wife saying nice things about her husband is sort of a given in these things, she can only do harm and clearly she didn't do that. She bought him the chance to close the deal.

His life story is tricky. I'm sorry but his family life is not the normal American life. I think most voters vote on some sense of feel for a candidate and only he can do that. Her testament for him won't be enough at the end off the day.

It'll all be forgotten by the time Hillary is done tonight anyway.

My wife, who's not nearly as conservative as I am, gave the speech a big "meh." In a piece of hard hitting political analysis, she did say that the kids at the end were cute, though.

My response was that they should have had some puppies, too. Everybody loves puppies.

8 Gabe,

Ace asked you too put on your average moron hat, not to pretend you're retarded. You're forgetting that even your average moron has a bullshit detector, particularly when it comes to politics. She said some good words, but did it come of as genuine? Not really.

Posted by: runninrebel at August 26, 2008 02:29 PM (0n9wc)

9 scary point. Remember 1996.  Where's the outrage?

There is no outrage without media participation.  "normal americans" don't read blogs.   They don't care.  If McCain won't make hay (as apparently Dole failed to make hay about Clinton's sliminess) in actual ads, convention time, or debate appearances, it won't matter because it doesn't exist.

So, McCain needs to talk about this.  Any outrage, of course, falls neatly into Reagan's free publicity rule.  If the left gets all pretend outraged about the ads, the public still walks away with the Obama hangs with terrorist underlying truth.

10 >>I can't will myself to be a fucking moron.

It's not will, I was born this way.

I thought it was a pretty good speech and well delivered even if I believed not a word of it. I'm not sure it much matters though. The Obama campaign has turned into a joke with all the presidential seals, movie stars, Joe Hope and Change Biden , the Hillary disrespected harridans and the reach around they are getting from the press. Everything they touch seems to magically turn into a turd. The masses may be slow to come around but they aren't stupid and the poll numbers are showing it.

I had essentially the same reaction as ace - saying the right things, but not particularly well, she seemed like one of the people who show up as a "special guest appearance .." character on The Bill Cosby Show.

Or Nancy Reagan on "Diff'rent Strokes"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TENJNk4Wk4g

My decidedly non-political wife watched a lot more of Michelle's speech.

Her reaction was " I didn't think she did any public service work - what did she do?" and a couple of general points about her appearance (which was "good") and stage manner.

14 It's this simple.

Michelle Obama that we saw for months was the real Michelle. We saw less of this after her remarks about not being proud of her country, or that America is a mean country, or that Barack is going to make you work to overcome your inherent prejudices, etc., is the real Michelle Obama.

She made those remarks among friends, and thus let the guard down to reveal what she REALLY thinks. Repeatedly, at different  It was only after she and the Democrats realized that her remarks were videotaped and were being played all over the country did something change.

Somebody in the BO camp pulled her aside and had a "coming to Jesus" talk with her - something along the lines of, "look, sweetie, you can't go out every time you give a speech and start ripping the country to shreds. It's hurting your husband politically and people perceive you negatively. What we're going to do is "re-make" and "rehabilitate" you in the press." She then was relegated to a semi-regular spot on the political powerhouse known as "the View" in a desperate attempt to salvage her image. She was given fawning profiles in People, Time, and other celebritard magazines for months. MONTHS.

And so the rehabilitation of the real Michelle Obama last night was realized, with the goal of turning her from the bitter, angry, hacked-off Michell Obama (the real Michelle) into the dove-eyed, wonderful, soft-spoken "nice" lady we saw paraded out there last night. It was an act, plain and simple.

Juxtapose what she was saying before BO's poll numbers started to fall (the real Michelle) and what happened after the BO camp pulled her off the stage for a few months (last night).

Fake. Phony. Contrived. Well-delivered. Not fooling anyone who has been paying attention.

Dude, that's dumb shit. Laura Bush comes off as a real person who doesn't want to be in public life but endures it because she loves her husband.

Michelle Obama comes off as somebody who has been coached to say what she doesn't believe so she can help her radical husband get elected.

True but there's the rub. How big is the 'not paying attention' crowd? My guess is it's big, really big.

We talk about blogs and cable news and such but those numbers are relatively small. I think O'Reilly is the highest rated cable talk show and he gets 2-2.5 million a night and he's mostly getting the same people every night not a new 2.5 million everyday.

I'd bet for the overwhelming majority of people who watched last night, that was the first time they'd seen Michelle Obama and most will be impressed or at least neutral.

20 How dumb is the American public? Hopefully not quite dumb enough for the Obamas' purposes.

Americans aren't dumb, they just don't care. We on this blog, we're policy wonks, political junkies, and ideologues. Therefore, we follow these things very closely, but the other 99.993% of Americans, not so much.

99.993% of Americans don't know who Saul Alinsky was, let alone what he wrote. So any ad connecting him to the Obamas is a non-starter. Ditto Ayers and Dohrn. There are actually two things going against us here: 1) the MSM is not going to be talking very much about this because they don't want to damage their chosen candidate and so they won't be telling us we need to care, and b) most Americans don't care.

In this type of environment, I'm amazed McCain gets any votes at all, let alone is tied with Obama in the polls. That's a minor miracle itself.

22 Michelle did not seem fake and she delivered it like a pro but that only seems great if you saw this as only a do no harm opportunity. In most cases that would be true but the Obamas had a real opportunity here and blew it. The only genuine parts of her speech were those that spoke to families of 2 government/public service workers. What she described was nice but it isn't how most people see life.  Most people are not terribly concerned about public service, for pay, and even less think the most noble aspiration is that both spouses do it. Maybe if they could earn the salaries the Obamas do they might think different. She was singing to the choir here. The fact that she sung well doesn't mean it wasn't the same old song.

This was a stump speech when it should have been a spouse's speech.
This should have been about family only, let the candidate do the stump work. She could of took the Obamas to middle America, instead she tried to take Middle America to south Chicago. If Middle America wanted to be in the inner cities they would have left them to begin with.

No, normal Americans don't read blogs, but the MSM does. Think of the important political stories that have risen in the last year, how many originated with blogs, with the MSM reluctantly reporting the story later on after it has achieved critical mass in the blogosphere? I'd say most of them.

When it comes to politics, the MSM doesn't report on the candidates, they report on what the blogs are saying about the candidates.

29 runninrebel,

A lot more people saw it last night than watch cable news on a regular basis. Network ratings are done  compared to what they were 25 years ago but they are still higher than anything on cable.

Look at the 'dying' network newscasts...combined they are watched by roughly 20 million people a night.

CBS' evening news is in the tank and still gets watched by more than twice the number of people who watch Fox at 8pm.

A bad network night is a shit load of people and for most them, it was their first prolonged exposure to Michelle Obama.

Obama staffers whispered to themselves throughout the speech, "stick to the script, Michelle, pleeeeasssse! Don't be your true self."

This convention will be one big "there's nothing scary here, folks" exercise in bullshit. I don't think the 527s and conservative pundits are going to let the fact that Obama is buddy-buddy with terrorists be overlooked, hee, hee.

The kids thing at the end? Campy.  Lame. Staged. Faux.  Kinda like those sitcoms from the 50s where everyone gets together at the end of the episode and has a laugh about the well intentioned silly little thing that little Michelle Cornhole did that led to unintended consequences.

I was have expecting a laugh-track to be cued up and played at the end of that cringe-worthy ending.

As for the delivery?  Stunted.

And the Hand waving? Worthy of inducing epileptic fits.  Kinda like a nervous tic manifested by the hands.

The best part was the post speech MSM breakdown, which could have been summed up by "Do ya think the American public bought it?"  HA!  Perhaps they should have thrown in a couple of SUVs to seal the deal.

Hell, I work in a "public service" institution full of people who will tell you they're engaged in political life and a small fraction of them watched last night. There's weeks worth of lag time between us and them in terms of news, and a few days lag time between the MSM and them.

I'd say the large chuck of people tuning in to the DNC last night were auto-D or -R voters who won't be swayed either way. The people who are uninterested and malleable are too concerned with football and pron right now.

38 MO did well.  She didn't sound angry or despairing.  She's damn good-looking, and the kids were cuter than heck.  She starts off too many sentences with "See,..."  The only content of her talk that riled me was the "world as it is/world as it should be" thing; it's pure progressivism.  It seems that what she loves about America is how much fun it will be to work to "perfect" it, like some kind of centrally-planned control-economy Sims game.  BHO, in his brief Jambi-in-the-box appearance, seemed tired, and a little baked actually.

I sometimes think that the "nobody is paying attention yet" meme is an excuse trotted out by somebody who is doing poorly to explain how they are doing so poorly. In this year's case, I often hear that "nobody is paying attention" when Barack-O's poll numbers are reported to have taken a dip.

A lot of people are already paying attention, and they know who they're voting for.

They're not dumb, but they can be completely ignorant, in the literal sense of "not being informed on a matter".  And I have to agree with fellow commenters that a huge part of that, IMO the biggest part of it, is that they just won't be informed (or, I should say, enlightened) on ANYTHING negative about Obama from the MSM until it reaches such critical mass that the media can't suppress it anymore.

I've never seen the media so completely propagandize for a candidate as they have this election cycle.  We just have to hope and pray that enough of Obama's many, many flaws are exposed between now and November.  The public already seems to be waffling on his "hope and change" rhetoric, just a bit more honesty about the man's lack of qualifications may be enough to ensure his defeat.

If they are so inclined the Republicans could knock down last nights Michelle Obama rebuilding moment in a couple of well done commercials.  I doubt they'll bother.

I also thought the speech doing well was predicated on two things 1) the target audience of the speech didn't know anything about Michelle Obama and 2) they aren't going to find out the truth anytime soon.  I mean the part where she talked about how she gave up the job at the big law firm (no indication that she was doing anything of note at the job or making any money drumming up clients) for the job helping people become involved with charity or somesuch nonsense was ridiculous.  She went from a high-pressure, feast or famine succeed on your own merits job to a nice cushy well paid basically government job that was created specifically for her (as director of affirmative action hiring or something like that).  A cynical person might think that she failed as a big time lawyer and fell into a affirmative action position created for her due to her husbands influence.  Also I noted that there was no mention of Harvard or Princeton, I wonder why?  Most people who attend those schools love to talk about it.

50 Seems to me Warden nails it. She might be sweet as pie to your Denny's hostess, but those pancakes had better be served with a side of some goddamned respect.

51 And today, supposedly, the U of I will release those withheld Ayers/Obama documents, at least the ones they haven't "lost" or "inadvertently destroyed."

Kurtz got the complete index before they tried to hide everything. He'll know if they're still holding out on him. :-)

If they can keep her to scripted speeches she will be fine, but let her loose and there is trouble.

I often chat with a very nice lady on my commute (okay, yeah, she's a MILF) and out of the blue she mentions Biden, and what a great pick he was for Obama's VP.  I have always avoided talking politics with her because I wanted to continue to fantasize that she was a closet conservative - well fuck that.

Anyways I ask her why he was such a great pick, and she says because of his foreign policy experience.  Abandoning all hope, I ask her... like what experience?  She stopped and stared at me, and finally she said "You know, I realize now that they have been lying to me all the time and I have been lapping it up, and you knew that didn't you?"  I said yes, I did.  Then she put her hand pretty far up on my pantleg and wispered into my ear fiercely "Please, I have always wanted to have a real conservative man come in my mouth!!"

Okay, I adapted those last three sentences slightly for a more moron-friendly narrative flow, but it is true that this woman had never heard of Biden before last weekend, and is now absolutely convinced he probably had a big role in the development of the Marshall Plan, if not the League of Nations.

We're so fucked.  Me... not so much.

54 Michelle is only nice to the black waitresses. The white one's, not so much.
Some of you morons should ask some female friends who've done time in the restaurant trenches what their experiences were when serving black , excuse me African American patrons. Prepare for an earful.
Oh , and nom nailed it. Dick Morris has been dining out on his Clinton relationship for far too long.

I don't know about the speech.  But the paragragh above pretty much sums up the whole problem with the Democrat party.  Thank you, Ace. You made my day.

57 I've looked at her tapes: my diagnosis is major Laser and Botox . Her face and brows are FROZEN and immobilized, to keep her from scowling like a basilisk

58 I caught the CNN clowns' post-speech analysis last night.  You would swear they thought the  entire thing was off the cuff rather than a prepared speech.  The concensus seems to be that the "I love this country" fully repairs any damage the "for the first time" statement did.  Must be true.  I heard it from America's most trusted 'news' source.
