McCain Rolls Out Deadly Hill/Barack Ad

No, seriously, here's the ad:

Pretty much destroys my theory they'd play this softer, at least until they were sure there was no backlash here.

Hillary says she will personally cast her nominating vote for Barack Obama, but as for instructing them to vote for Obama themselves... well, see, that's a "personal decision" and she'll let each of her supporters make up her own mind.

Hillary's all about respecting one's personal political conscience, after all.

1 For him to be this confident about this...you think there is some communication with the Hillary campaign?

Posted by: The Obvious at August 25, 2008 02:29 PM (1g+FW)

2 She's just respectful that way.

Posted by: runninrebel at August 25, 2008 02:29 PM (0n9wc)

3 Is this shit secret ballot?  If so, I would bet the farm that Hillary is not going to vote for Captain Omerica.

This is a much better commercial that the last Clinton/Barack one.  It's hard hitting, but doesn't really rely on Clinton so much as it reminds us of the feud.

4 McCain's ad team for president!

Posted by: Slublog at August 25, 2008 02:35 PM (R8+nJ)

5 The problem with the play softer idea?
McCain really is not a typical pol in one way, he really has no desire to be seen as above it all or magnanimous. He likes going for the jugular, on the senate floor and on the trail.
Another candidate would probably coast a bit on his up tick for awhile.
McCain sees a wound and is going to keep it open till it bleeds out.
McCain may be wishy washy a lot but when it comes to campaigning he's more like DeLay than Rove.
I don't think anyway can truly appreciate how bad McCain wants this, not even Hillary.

6 Christ, if McCain had the balls to go with that first video as his ad, he'd make WAVES.  That was funny as hell.  And also in keeping with the whole "Obama is a celebrity lightweight" theme.

Needs some sound balancing though.

Incidentally, I don't think the REAL ad is likely to be viewed as "unfair play" by voters.  It's not taking Hillary out of context, or implying that she supports McCain in any way.  It's quoting her in full, in context, and simply pointing out that "HAY GUYZ EVEN HILLARY MAKEZ A GOOD POINT!"

I think it's actually damn effective.  Much better editing and flow than the first commercial.  This is one of the ads that Johnny Mac should be running throughout the DNC coverage.

7 Stop!  Popcorn time!

Posted by: alexthechick at August 25, 2008 02:37 PM (SHHaV)

8 Boy, McCain is kicking ass in the Democratic primary.

If he picks Romney the Dems run ads showing Mitt and McCain saying mean things about each other. That's pretty standard. The difference here is Hillary and Biden saying nice things about McCain compared to Obama. I'm pretty sure the Dems have no tape of either Mitt or Mav saying anything nice about Obama.

It's a very strange dynamic this year.

Oh and alexthechick...extra butter on mine, please.

Multiple members of Hillary's immediate family are in McCain headquarters on a weekly basis. She and McCain want the same thing - Obama defeated.

Posted by: Anon at August 25, 2008 02:42 PM (+skB4)

10 McCain is a military man, grew up in a military family.  He is trained to exploit every advantage, that there is no such thing as proportional force, and that swift, overwhelming attacks at the heart of your opponent is just the right thing to do.  It could all backfire, of course, but I have yet to see evidence that such a thing is likely.

There was a lot of "reswallows" in the production room when that ad was made.

How many 'pubs were puking in their mouths and swallowing it back while editing that ad?

Posted by: wickedpinto at August 25, 2008 03:36 PM (ul7te)

20 sorry, "re-eating" is what I've heard it called, not "re-swallow."

Didja see the Drudge shot of Madonna a few ago, the one with the "flayed alive" look?

She and Amy Winehouse must have the same trainer.

22 Nice!  I heard that they wanted to do a Rickrolled on McCain, but they couldn;t find any footage of him with dance moves.

At least if Obama loses he can go on American Idol.
