Jim Leach (R - get the hell out of here, really?) to speak at DNC tonight.

In an attempt to recapture lightning in a bottle like the Republicans did by having Zell Miller address the 2004 convention, the Democrats are trotting out their own Republican to speak to the convention tonight. They've chosen former Representative Jim Leach, a liberal Republican from the Eastern Iowa district that includes the University of Iowa and several small liberal colleges. Would it be fair to say that Leach (or as Lincoln Chafee calls him, "that goddamn disloyal RINO from Iowa") is just slightly out of mainstream Republican politics? Yeah, I think that's fair.

If you choose to watch Leach's speech tonight, just remember that Zell Miller represented all the Democrats who believe that America is a good country, our military tries to represent us honestly and honorably at all times, and that taxing the rich out of existence eventually leaves us all in the poorhouse. Jim Leach? He represents all the Republicans who think that John McCain is too conservative. I don't really think it's an even matchup.

Jim Leach is to Republicans what Aquaman is to Superheros: He's got the suit, and he's even got some so-called "superpowers" (talking to fish? I guess that would come in handy if you worked the fryer at Long John Silvers, or something like that), but all the REAL superheros laugh at him behind his back.

I could understand a RINO pulling a Zell Miller eventually but doing it for this socialistic, blame America first idiot who is running against a fellow RINO, I would not have predicted it.

Before he gives his speech I would hope one of his real Republican friends reminds him he is giving a speech in support of someone who attended a church that preached racist hatred and white conspiracies, worked closely with a unrepentent terrorist and continues to lie about it, participated in quid pro quo with a convicted felon, voted against the born alive act and continues to lie about it and is the most liberal, inexperienced Senator to ever run for President. 15 Yeah, this one's been coming for a long time.

The only way Leach could have survived as long as he did in his district was by essentially being a Democrat in GOP clothing. But even with that, it was pretty apparent that he really didn't want to be reelected. The race he ran against Loebsack two years ago was lame. (Of course, the race Loebsack ran against Leach was also lame.)

In fact, it was the most polite and candy-assed political campaign in American history. Loebsack's commercials literally began "Jim Leach is a good man....but it's time for change. etc..." and Leach responded in kind, never missing an opportunity to praise Loebsack as a "good man".

My supposition is that Leach didn't want to win, that he was tired of politics and tired of hiding how he really felt, but he was too honorable to change parties.

So, it's not much of a surprise that he's now going to slather Barry O with some RINO love.

Oh, and speaking as someone who knows Loebsack in a professional capacity, he is a nice guy, but he's also a bit of dim bulb (Ph.D. notwithstanding). Too bad this district is so liberal, because in a more evenly divided district he'd be very easy to beat.

Jim Leach was the worst House Banking Committee chairman EVER. The only reason his name is even on Gramm-Leach-Bliley is that he wouldn't let the bill get out of his committee unless they put his name on it. He had nothing to do with writing it or doing any work on it at all. He did pretty much nothing as Chairman. All the banking groups hated him. He refused to do anything politically to help the younger members on the Committee either (simple things like holding hearings in their districts, letting them be chief sponsors of major bills, etc.) I went to a fundraiser once for Rick Lazio and Leach barged in to yell at the lobbyists for the Homebuilders for something they opposed that he wanted. Just a sorry excuse for a politician. I never understood why he ever ran for office in the first place.
