Don't Look Now But Your Insanity Is Showing

Is there a full moon or something? It seems like the Left has chosen today to go especially crazy.

First, there's the whole cross in the sand story which hit critical mass sometime last night. The short version is that McCain has, on many occasions, told the story about how on Christmas Eve, one of his Vietnamese captors silently drew a cross on the ground as some kind of sign of Christian solidarity. The Left has decided that McCain made the story up to appeal to Christians. Or something. Tom Maguire at the link takes the Lefty theorizing apart.

For my part, this has got to be one of the dumber lines of attack, simply because there is no way at all that this story can be proved or disproved. There was nobody there except for McCain and the guard so there is no way to know what went on. That isn't going to stop the Left, which is desperate to take revenge for the "swiftboating" of John Kerry.

But this is not like Kerry's Christmas in Cambodia fib, where Kerry's actual location and movements were documented in detail. Rather, this is McCain's word versus...well, no one's word. This is McCain versus the insinuation that he's intentionally or as a result of his age misremembering his captivity. Worse, it's not like this is about an issue of even moderate importance. Who really cares what McCain's captors did? No one at all. In other words, it doesn't matter what McCain's story might have been. The Left would have found some way to call him a liar.

Second, the cone of silence SCANDAL. That is all caps because judging by the amount of attention this story has been given in the legacy media (in addition to Lefty blogs), this is a Really. Big. DEAL. ABC's Jake Tapper, for example, has stumbled onto a particularly unpersuasive line of attack. Y'see, even though the McCain campaign has said that McCain didn't get to hear the questions early, the campaign has tellingly (according to Tapper) been silent on whether McCain aides could hear the questions. McCain's denial apparently wasn't broad enough for Tapper to think that it includes being relayed the questions by way of his aides. Cue the gotcha motif.

I think Ace had this one right from the beginning. Someone in the McCain campaign was smart enough to anticipate questions about abortion and judges at a religious forum. By contrast, the Obama campaign is staffed with idiots. I think more than anything else, the Left and the legacy media are simply embarrassed for their guy. And that's why they are all grasping at straws.

1 It's going to be real fun when, during the actual debates, McCain dismembers Obama in similar fashion and the loons need to come up with some other rationale for why The One is getting his ass raped by the old man.

What else are you going to ask someone who is running for potus?  And I doubt McCain even thought about it in preparation since he expressed the same views he has expressed many times before. It's really not rocket science.

Actually this is one area where McCain's political and personal experience shows. He's been around for a long time and has had to answer a lot of policy questions over the decades. I doubt his aides had to much prep - he's was answering similar questions eight years ago, and his answers haven't really changed.

Obama, by contrast, seemed like he had never considered these questions before.

9 The cross in the sand story is a waste. Honestly do they really think "Hey he likes crosses I will vote for him." is how Christians think? True, false, it's just a story. It has no impact on voting and there is no way to prove it false.

A Christian preacher of a large church with a large on-lne and legacy media presence that "prepped" us as to format and content.

Damn, there isn't any way to win at this without cheating!

Unless cheating has not been part of your life from day one.

Then there are some other alternatives.

11 For two thousand years, Christians who are being persecuted have used drawing fish or crosses into the dirt as a silent secret form of worship.

It's not novel, and it's completely believable that Mccain's guard did this, even if it's also in a book.

It's been going on forever.

12 As far as Obama's toughest decision, why the hell was it so "agonizing"?
He says he was "firmly convinced" Saddam had no weapons of mass destruction.
First how could he be so convinced? Even the most ardent naysayers against the war weren't, they just didn't think we should attack a country which had not attacked us. He says that Saddam being such a bad guy made it agonizing.
Really? Is there a conservative around thinks we should attack a country solely because the leader is a bad guy? Will this be Oblamo's stance as pres?

I think this is some of the left's first realization that Obama may not be as smart as he appears.  They fell for his so-called oratory skills so hard, that they never ever considered the possiblity.  Style is substance for them especially after 8 years of GWB.  It's only going to get worse, once the attacks on him intensify after the convention and the days grow longer.  Sleep deprivation will pull back the curtain on the Wizard and their world will turn upside down.

15 For two thousand years, Christians who are being persecuted have used drawing fish or crosses into the dirt as a silent secret form of worship.

More like a secret sign to instill hope.  I was at Pawiak prison in Warsaw which is where the Nazi's imprisoned, tortured, and generally murdered their victims. They had a display of tiny crosses made out of twigs and yarn. Most were the size of thumbnails. People risked their lives for these small religious mementos because it comforted them and gave them strength to endure the most horrible suffering.  While I'm an atheist, I know that is nothing to sneer at.

16 You fucking wingnuts...it was so clear that McCain was cheating. You could see the bump in the back of his jacket where the radio receiver was so he could hear the answers Rove was giving him.

17 True story. The first I saw of the whole "Bush was wired at the debate" thing was from a post by a guy on DU. I wrote him and asked didn't he think that a party with as much money as the Republicans could afford to get equipment that wouldn't show, like news anchors use every damn night? Also, didn't Kerry's campaign have the money and expertize to catch Bush if he did? And that maybe his time wouldn't be better spent getting out the vote?

His answer? He sent me an email saying I was an idiot who should go and fucking die. Attached to the email was a copy of the video of Nicholas Berg. No shit. I was completely friggin stunned.

18 Hmmmm.

Actually Warren gave an interview and he mentioned that the broad general topics were communicated to each candidate.  So while the precise question couldn't be anticipated a question on abortion or abortion rights was certainly communicated to both sides.

Of course it would take a total idiot to NOT anticipate a question on abortion rights in front of an Evangelical Christian crowd.

Posted by: memomachine at August 18, 2008 03:47 PM (3PLow)

19 I almost wish they had been given the full list of questions.  The ones Obama had prepped for were perhaps his worst.

You want to be president, but your wife and grandma are your sources of wisdom?  We're at war!  Who are you going to get wisdom about in our war?

And an evangelical church asks Obama what his opinion is on abortion... what a shock!  Obama: I am not qualified to know my opinion.

Mccain isn't stupid.  Or dishonorable.  I accept his many flaws, because that debate was a damn good show of hope for our nation.  It's ridiculous to accuse him of cheating unless you have evidence.  And there is going to be backlash.  Andrea Mitchell confirmed that Obama's campaign is pushing the story to her.  Obama's campaign says they aren't making an issue of it.  Obama's campaign has just been caught lying about a severely dishonorable accusation.  Of course, they played this game with Clinton.  But by denigrating his cross story and the debate 'cone of silence', they are showing they are extremely dirty mud-slingers.  It's absurd that they think this will garner any votes.  They are just out of control (because they don't have a good leader).  I bet Mccain's campaign is somewhat happy about how Obama's campaign  and MSM are so over the top.  The middle is starting to take notice.

These are the times that prove the Dims believe their own line of shit. To them "swiftboating" simply means throwing accusations that question a candidate's military history and loyalty. They have convinced themselves that Kerry was a patriot and hero and that all the guys who served with him who say otherwise are liars. So they try to get some payback against McCain by using the tactics that they have convinced themselves were used against Kerry.

Here's the difference, even McCain's prison guards say they would vote for him if they were American. His fellow prisoners tell yet more tales of valor and guts and determination than McCain has related. Kerry on the other hand boasts of his own actions, but had earned indifference from his fellows while in country and their contempt when he called them barbarians before congress. This is a level of nuance that the libs cannot grasp.

We'll never know for sure if the story McCain told really happened or not, but it's certainly plausible. I remember reading the biography of an American soldier in WWII who had escaped from the Japanese in the Philippines, but was recaptured months later. He was being held in a prison while being beaten and interrogated daily. One day he happened to be alone with one of the kinder Japanese guards, and the guard pointed to a carved crucifix on the ceiling and then to himself, made the sign of the cross, and then they both made the the sign together. Unfortunately the soldier was transferred to another prison before he could make contact with the guard again.

35 I think it would be more surprising if in that horrible place, no North Vietnamese were human enough to show Mccain a brief bit of compassion.

that's basically what the Obamatons are claiming.  Mccain didn't have to be forgiving of those people.  This was him showing that even our enemies have good people tragically entwined.  The liberals can't stand it... because only they can have such epiphanies.

But the idea that there were zero Christians on the bad-guy side, or that none of them would ever think to make a cross, it actually pretty damned evil of them to assert.  If you didn't speak the language of a tortured Christian prisoner (one as f'ed up as Mccain was, with broken arms, teeth kicked out, infections everywhere) you were forced to guard, would you not make some effort to give that prisoner a bit of hope?  On Christmas wouldn't you make a cross with your hand or in the dirt?

The story rings true, and I bet it has happened thousands of times across batllefields.  It's hardly what makes Mccain a hero, of course.

McCain not only bloodied Barry's nose in this, he scored a knockdown. Amazingly, the MSM and the moonbats were totally unable to see this coming- kinda like Adolf  Hitler getting blindsided by Jesse Owens in the Berlin '36 Olympics. Barry came off looking like a windy, evasive assclown that even an old man can easily knock out.

The Dems and MSM are too stupid to realize that they're only making Barry's ass-whupping look worse by whining and making excuses. And Barry, as usual, proves that he's not presidential timber by being the biggest crybaby in his corner.

This scrimmage was essentially a replay of the "Chimpy McBush was wired" claims during the 2004 Presidential debates: Dem candidate gets cold-cocked, media fails to provide easy enough questions, and immature moonbats go berserk and claim they were cheated. The Dems are unable to admit to themselves that 75 years of socialist policies have produced exactly the (unqualified) types of candidates that they wind up running with.

Assholes.

53 Andrew Sullivan has worked himself up into a lather over the cross story and then Orson Swindle comes along and Andrew looks, yet again, like the biggest idoit asshole

"I recall John telling that story when we first got together in 1971, when were talking about every conceivable thing that had ever happened to us when we were in prison" Swindle told me a few minutes ago. "Most of us had been kept apart or in small groups. Then, in 1970, they moved us into the big cell. And when we all got to see each other and talk to each other directly, instead of tapping through walls, we had 24 hours a day, seven days a week to talk to each other, and we shared stories. I vaguely recall that story being told, among other stories."

"I remember it from prison," Swindle continued. "There were several stories similar to that in which guards — a very few, I might add — showed compassion to the prisoners. It was rare, and I never met one, but some of the guys did."

As for the people who are questioning McCain's account, Swindle said, "That's garbage. These people are desperate."

54 This thing is beyond amazing. McCain was good. Clearly, he was trotting out answers he's given in a hundred similar forums, but for the most part they were clear, declarative responses: there he is, take him or leave him. Obama was his usual windy, evasive self: thin-skinned, vacillating, obtuse, obscure. Not an impressive performance. And the difference between them is even clearer when you read the transcript.

And now Barry's boys are crying foul. How boring. How predictable.

Hey performing well at this forum was "above Obama's pay grade".  His friends and supporters should get over it.  They sent a young 'un  (can't say boy for fear of being called a racist) to do a man's job--and he couldn't do it.

There is a difference in style; McCain knows what he knows (even if he's wrong) and he jumps on a question with vigor.  And yes some of the questions could have been anticipated by either McCain's or Obama's staff.  If one side did a better job of preparing their "horse" for the debate well shame on the weaker side.

But short of giving Obama a crib sheet and a canned answer to read off a teleprompter, he's never going to jump on an answer like McCain.  It's not his style.  He's more of the League of Nations bullshit waffle maker. In fact he was born too late; he should have been a delegate to the League of Nations ~1932.

To make an issue out of an anecdotal story told by someone who actually was a prisoner and make it sound like he's lying says more about his accusers than it does Big Mac. If this is the Obamacrats idea of bitch slappin' McCain they need some serious mental help.

Frankly if they came to a conclusion that the sun rose in the east and set in the west, I'd confirm it with my own eyes first before I'd trust anything that came out of that nest of vipers.

64 It comes from the Dain Bramage from smoking too much pot. Really.

And I would have no clue that practicing Christians might ask me about abortion or judges at a religious forum if I were to a candidate for national office. Nope. Not one.

You mean you'd be surprised that there might have been two hidden Christian guards in communist prison camps who showed a little bit of human kindness?

You must be surprised on a fairly regular basis. I don't want to alarm you but the rumor is the Sun will rise in the east tomorrow.

What is a "Christianist"?  I know that Thully has been using it for a while but I refuse to go to that simpleton's site to sift through pages of delusional rants to find out what a word means that isn't in the OED.  There is a word "Christianism" that has a secondary definition as being a contemptuous reference to Christianity, which is probably what that snarky idiot is using it for even though there are no examples of it being used since the late 19th century.  But there's no inclusion of a word "Christianist", unlike "Episcopalian" for example.

73 So, let's see....if I was a secret Christian in communist Vietnam, how could I show a fellow christian that I was a co-religionist? Maybe send him an e-mail? Announce openly to the commandant? Start wearing a huge silver crucifix.

LOL.

How about I use my foot to quickly draw a cross in the dirt and then erase it?
