The Glorious Deeds of the Russian Military

President Medvedev gave out medals today for service in the war in Georgia. His description of the conflict bears little resemblance to reality.

"Thank you for standing in the way of those who brought destruction and death to the people of the republic," he said, apparently referring to South Ossetia — the Russian-backed separatist region at the heart of the conflict, which erupted amid a Georgian offensive Aug. 7.
"You were the last hope of innocent people and your bravery saved lives," Medvedev said.
It was unclear what specific role the 30 soldiers and officers he decorated had played.
"I am sure that such a well-done, effective and peacemaking operation aimed at protecting our citizens and other people will be among the most glorious deeds of the Russian military," Medvedev said.

But hey, at least some Russian soldiers got to feel good about themselves. It's probably not much fun to work for a guy who gives out leave or die orders. I think the displacement of ethnic Georgians was always part of the plan:

“The soldiers told us they had an order from Putin - leave or be killed.” Manana Dioshvili showed no emotion as she described how Russian troops forced her to flee her home. Her former neighbours nodded in agreement, huddled together in a kindergarten whose windows had been blown out by a Russian bomb.
“That's how they explained themselves to us,” she recalled of the moment they fled the ethnic Georgian village of Kurta, near the capital of South Ossetia, Tskhinvali.
“They said, ‘Putin has given us an order that everyone must be either shot or forced to leave'. They told us we should ask the Americans for help now because they would kill us if we stayed.”

Meanwhile, we're still waiting for Russia to pull back its troops. The blockade in the Black Sea continues, as does the occupation of Poti. Russia is moving missile launchers into South Ossetia and establishing "military buffer zones" in Georgia proper outside of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. It looks like Russian troops are now digging in to Gori after severing Georgia's main east-west railway and blocking the east-west highway. These are the glorious deeds of the Russian military.

A local channel here in the DC area, channel 56, shows a lot of international programming. Every day they show Russian news (in English).

Last week it was full of "the Georgians are ethnic cleansing" and "here's a young girl orphaned and made homeless by indiscriminate shelling by Georgians", and "here's another, typical Ossetian who says that Georgians make pastry using the blood of South Ossetians" (wait, maybe I got that last one confused with some other budding dictators).

It was so bad it made Al Jazeera look all honest and stuff. Heck, it made the NY Times look honest. No, it made Andrea Mitchell look honest.

Tsar Putin I took over the media and now, what gets reported in Russia is what Putin wants to be reported.

If he wants good press in the US, he's gonna have to start spewing commie rhetoric, the NYTimesWashPostCNNABCCBSNBCetc. isn't shilling for just any dictators.

3 The Tzar Putin be praised, what a great victory for the glorious troops of my new employer, Russia. With Putin's help our fearless troops thwarted the nuclear attack on small children, in order that the Georgians might rape them. The attempts at ethnic cleansing by the Georgians was stooped in it's tracks. Is there a more worthless race of pigs than the Georgians I ask you? Yes, yes the Jews of course but I digress. With this great victory Russia has now agreed to a cease fire to establish peace again. Even at this moment they withdraw. Finally I would say this to George Bush, John McCain and the rest of the American war mongers:

God will roast their stomachs in hell at the hands of Russians.

7 This has gone too far. Georgia has to rely on basically one US Presidential candidate to defend it. What the hell happened to Europe? I heard they threatened to stop buying Russian gas, but that's hardly enough. This is their neighbor being slaughtered.

The US always is slow to respond to this stuff. And it's on the other side of the planet. But what about Europe? They are far more than worthy of defeating Russia. You can't safely nuke your neighbors. They have less to lose and more to gain by getting so much relevance. They could be a positive counter balance to US domination, by being an equal good guy. Where are the French and German peacekeepers? France has force projection capabilities that exceeds Russia's. Use that crap for once. Stop the next monster.

I'm in Russia right now. My cousin has Russia Today channel on her TV, and I have seen nothing but coverage of the Georgian conflict on it. The only things I know from watching it are:

1) The Georgian president is mad with power

2) He mercilessly attacked the peace loving South Ossetians

3) The benevolent Russians came to their rescue

4) The Georgians can not be trusted in peace negotiations

5) The western media and politicians are wrongly blaming the great peace keeping nation of Russia for all the trouble.
