Unsubstantiated Rumor: Bill Clinton To Speak at Denver Convention; This Does Nothing To End Obama-Clinton Rift

Finally waking up to just how bad it looks to exclude the most recent Democratic president from any speaking role at the convention, the Obama campaign has offered a Wednesday night spot to Bill Clinton. NBC's sources say that Clinton "will in fact speak."

I don't know if that means he's accepted or that Obama's people are saying that Clinton has accepted, but I wouldn't believe it until someone more trustworthy than NBC's unnamed sources announces it. Yes, if true this helps with the image problem. But no one is going to believe this will end what NBC's Mark Murray calls the "Obama-Clinton drama."

Immediately after her primary defeat, Hilary Clinton did a very good job of unreservedly championing Obama's candidacy. She told her people to support him and then she started stumping for him. In return, Obama treated her like dirt. As a result, her support slowly waned to the point where she's actually facing questions about her alleged race-based campaign again. Letting her husband speak at the convention does nothing to erase the hurt that comes with that or the distress of Clinton's die-hard supporters.

The thing that would actually have ended the Obama-Clinton drama is to put her on the ticket. But Obama doesn't want to do that and I suspect that until recently he assumed that he wouldn't need to. Now, even if he were to offer her the VP spot, I don't think she'd accept it.

2 Gabe, you sound like you are getting a man-crush on Our Girl.

And frankly, that's gross.

3 Don't get me wrong. I'd hit it, but just for the story.

I wouldn't enjoy it or anything.

Posted by: runninrebel at August 07, 2008 09:41 PM (qAMnO)

4 The drama has a nice sideshow, too. Silky, the man they both payed court to at the Carolina manse, has a sex scandal cover-up breaking.

The Enquirer reporters filed a police report against the hotel guards, and Silky could be subpoenaed as a witness.

Popcorn shortages predicted.

We're so boring, thank God. We have our Paulbots, sure, but just imagine if we had Huck trying to pull off a pseudo-coup at the convention, and blurry pictures of Mitt in the NE. I can do without the drama.

The Secret Service has issued a policy preventing Obama from nominating Hillary as VP. An unidentified spokesman for the agency's protective detail advised that they couldn't find anyone to work as a food taster under those circumstances.

6 Gabe,

Here's one made for TV: Hill figures a way to get the remaining supporters to go sulk not insane or pissy in the next few days. She calls the few remaining journo's who still like her and gets the 'Obama's a big bad man with no heart' stories written. Obama gives in, gives her the VP. And she accepts! Why?

Because she knows the ropes; which ones pull him up, and which one pull him down, and if done carefully she won't leave obvious fingerprints.

Then she proceeds to makes his life a living hell for the next four years. Revenge, it's what's for dinner.

You know what sucks about all of this?  Hillary is cooked but we've been so petrified of the ObamaSurge that we didn't dare celebrate her demise.  And now that she's actually lost the nomination, she actually looks like a rational statesman in comparison to Obama.  So we never got to celebrate her ass being kicked off the main stage.  Dems are buzzkills even when we buzzkill them.

Now that Obama doesn't look quite so inevitable, thanks to Obama himself, we'll all have to wait until sometime in November to have the dual celebration of both of them being cast aside.

Oh, and as a sidebar, go mccain.  woohoo.  yeah.  Underwhelm us with your flukey victory.  At least he ain't one of the other two.

I'm wondering if there isn't some way she is angling to get the nomination itself at the convention--if that's possible.  Dems ain't exactly driven by conviction, and I can see them jumping ship en masse, now, given the opportunity.

That is, if Obama continues to be Obama.

(Nice work, Malor.  You aren't such a dumbfuck after all.)

What??? Of course she would accept it!

She is praying (to Obama I imagine) every night that he asks her.

Please.

10 I'm wondering if there isn't some way she is angling to get the nomination itself at the convention--if that's possible.

It's possible. Neither has enough delegates to win it outright and they have to rely on the super delegates. Their votes aren't set in stone. Enough could vote for Hillary on the first ballot to nominate her or at least cause it so neither has enough votes. Then it would be a brokered convention. Still a possibility and we are talking about the Clintons.

11 Skinner, thanks.  I'm thinking "cool," but I can't guage who is more likely to lose.

12 The general election, that is.

13 Hmmmm.

**WARNING**

Instapundit.com has a link to a US News webpage that displays the new Obama Salute.  Supposed to be a reaction to the "W" salute that some jackass in the GOP came up with for Bush.

Essentially it looks like the international symbol for "Asshole!".

To which all I got as a reply is "Five dollar, foot long!".

Crazy-ass shit.

14 Hmmmm.

Hehe.  US News is wiping every comment people are leaving.  I saw 5 comments there and now there are none.  All in the space of about 3 minutes.

I saw 5 comments there and now there are none.

Since you're one of the sole surviving witnesses to these 'comments', how's about giving us a hint what they said?  Thanx.

I've been clicking at the US News site.  People are commenting like crazy, and the comments just keep disappearing.

The front page lists from 0 to 3 comments, then if you hit "Read all 3 comments" it gives you 3 to 5 different comments.

Then they all disappear.  A minute later the cycle restarts.

There seem to be three main points in comments: 1)  Did they not know about goatse?  2) The "O" stands for zero, and 3) Hey, didn't some other dude talk to big crowds in Germany and have his own salute, too?

I have seen no positive comments, so I don't know if they are deleting for viewpoint reasons or just all together.

Okay, I did see one positive comment on the O salute.  Lots of exclamation points, and "woo-hoo, unite!"  It was cleared out, too.

Which of you morons was shayna of CA?

Posted by: VKI at August 08, 2008 12:51 AM (xRo/Z)

20  Thanks guys, I put the O salute in a post of its own.

"Since you're one of the sole surviving witnesses to these 'comments', how's about giving us a hint what they said?  Thanx."

Sorry man but all I can give you is a chalk outline where the comments used to be.

Can't remember the specifics but nobody was impressed.

22 Hmmmm.

Right now I'm still fighting off the effects of a nasty case of pneumonia.  And I've got to say that the image of a crowd of crazy Obama supporters, but I repeat myself, all doing this Obamanation salute thing is enough to make me cough up a lung.

Posted by: memomachine at August 08, 2008 07:21 AM (3PLow)

23 I could almost Bill getting mollered up about 20 minutes before his speech, amble out on stage and just going off on Barack . . . "Call me a racist will you!"  I'd pay my left nut to watch that.

Posted by: BTM at August 08, 2008 10:48 AM (v0dke)

24 Yeah Slick hasn't been particularly coherent at any of his recent speaking gigs and he'll still have a raging mad-on about being jobbed as a racist.  Even in more pleasant times for him, his speeches were boring content-free cluster-fucks that lasted forever.  Like most of their standard strategies, I'm not seeing much upside for the Donks.  But I'm sure I'm missing something that political genius Howard Dean has planned.
