Obama: That Dollar Bill Thing? Yeah, I Was Talking About My Being Black. Credulous And Fawning Media Hit Hardest. UPDATE: Not Everyone Got The Memo

After spending a couple days denying that obvious, Obama admits that his "You know, he抯 new, he抯... doesn抰 look like the other presidents on the currency, you know, he抯 got a, he抯 got a funny name" remark did refer to his being black.

"I don抰 think it抯 accurate to say that my comments have nothing to do with race," Obama said. "Here's what I was saying and I think this should be undisputed: That I don抰 come out of central casting, when it comes to presidential races. For a whole range of reasons. I抦 young, I抦 new to the national scene, my name is Barack Obama, I am African American, I was born in Hawaii, I spent time in Indonesia. I do not have the typical biography of a presidential candidate. What that means is that I抦 sort of unfamiliar and people are still trying to get a fix on who I am, where I come from, what my values are and so forth in a way that might not be true if I seemed more familiar."

I love the contorted double negative at the beginning.

So, let's do the under the bus body count on this one...his own spokesman, the blogging editors of the NY Times and most of the rest of the media.

Andrea Mitchell, who volunteered to serve as Obama's chief defender and attacker of McCain on this matter, was unavailable for comment.

A note to the Obama masses in the media...in case you haven't noticed you and what credibility you have are disposable. But fear not, for while you may be laughed at in this lifetime, the Obamassiah will surely reward you in the next.

Update: Heh. Senator Mel Martinez, who believe it or not is a Republican, says Obama did not play the race card.

"I think we should be in a post-racial environment," said Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., a supporter of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., "I think Sen. [Barack] Obama has done an admirable job of that. I don't think he has race-baited. I think he has been very good about that."

What a wonderful bit of bi-partisanship. A Republican more protective of Obama than Obama is!

2 His comments had everything to do with race.

Race is one of the few things that you can see in a currency portrait. How in blazes can a picture on a dollar bill show anything about the subject's biography? How does Washington's portrait show that he never spent a few years in Indonesia. How does Grant's portrait show that he didn't grow up in Hawaii?

And since when does being "young" or "new to the national scene" indicate that you're not from "central casting" for presidential candidates? Obama turns 47 on Monday. Gore was 52 when he ran for president. Jimmy Carter was 52. Kennedy was 44. GWB was 54. The most recent Democratic president was 46!

New to the national scene? Like GWB in 2000? Like Bill Clinton in 1992? Like Dukakis in 1988? Like Reagan in 1980? Like Carter in 1976?

Captain Bullshit continues to astonish!

3 On the campaign trail, The Chosen One speaks... "Now, I may not look like those dead Presidents, such as Franklin and Susan B. Anthony, and I don't mean it's because I'm black. Republicans, who won't tell you that they are all white, every single one of them... they want to scare you because I'm different and full of hope and change and black too. But I will never make race an issue in this campaign, with its proud black heritage. Just ask my mom. I have always been clear on this, have never wavered nor had any doubts that my position on race in this campaign is to never, ever mention that I am black and it scares you. And I'm black too."

8 By the way, have you noticed how much like John Kerry he starts to sound once he's off the prepared speeches? Convoluted multi-clause sentences with little meaning that add nothing to the point he's trying to make, like he's writing a school paper and needs a higher word count.

9 It's just a process. Say something stupid, that your fans* love to hear. Deny it, when your opponents complain. Spin, with much help from the media. Then admit a portion of the truth, after most people have stopped listening. Make sure to leave crumbs for your fans to cling to.

See Clinton, H., re claims of being tired when speaking of dodging sniper fire.

*Forget supporters, I'm calling them fans or maybe groupies.

24 "lived there for years attending a Muslim school."

No offense, but it wasn't exactly a madrassa, and he was like, a kid, without much choice in the matter. Public schools in Indonesia have religious classes, and yeah, since they are a 80%+ muslim nation, his chances were good to get some Islamic religion classes.

Obviously it made a big impression on him....he ended up at Trinity Church in Chicago. Frankly, I think if he was a muslim it would be better than that church.

26 To avoid these gaffe-tasic blunders in the future, maybe Central Casting, (over at the DNC), really should reconsider their options, - such as hiring Hayes or Murphy or Jones to do the voice-over work, while Obama focuses on flexing his lips and bobbing his head.

27 No offense, but it wasn't exactly a madrassa, and he was like, a kid, without much choice in the matter.

It was a Muslim school, just like a private school with all Christian teachers and Christian school material is a Christian school even if they aren't officially one. Sure he had no choice, but the wording is deliberately trying to avoid that fact, he wants to mention it "look I'm different!" and yet avoid the "and I was indoctrinated with Muslim propaganda as a youth!" aspect. I don't blame him, I just couldn't let that pass.

29 Harun,

Rev. Wright is an ex-Muslim who invited Nation of Islam speakers to his church. Trinity Church is basically a Nation of Islam type organization with gospel music.

Obama can recite the Muslim call to prayer in a first rate Arabic accent. It's precisely Obama's ability to identify with Muslims that has the Dems so excited, like he'll be able to defuse Islamist anger by grokking where there coming from. John Kerry has been fairly explicit about this.

Here's a direct quote from Obama: "America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with [the Muslims] should the political winds shift in an ugly direction." So, if an Islamist attack on America excites hostility to Muslims, his concern protecting the Muslims from us rather than vice versa. Maybe that Muslim school did make an impression on him.

Posted by: right at August 02, 2008 03:49 PM (EquV1)

31 I'd suggest, caspera, that his sympathies toward Muslims are more the "oppressed minority, America is so cruel and mean to them" variety than "hey, I like Muslims and want to be with them." The very day 9/11 happened the usual suspects were in front of microphones warning that we needed to be tolerant, understanding, we needed to feel their pain, not respond violently, not to strike back, we deserved it, it was our fault. That wasn't because these guys necessarily liked Muslims. They just like America less.

150 years is not correct, hardly surprising.

1940. That is only 70 years.
Wendell Wilkie's (R) parents were both from Germany... or at any rate ethnic germans from Europe.

1904. 104 years.
Eugene Debs's parents were born in France or Remulak depending on your sources.

1856. John Fremont's father might have been a Quebecois or French refugee, or others say he doesn't legally have a father-- he was born a bastard.

1852. Winfield Scott's father was born in VA, but before the Revolution... does that count?

38 "Presidential Candidate" was in the predicate statement. I believe nobody has ever been elected President whose father wasn't an American colonist or citizen. I didn't realize that was the question.

Last President whose father wasn't a citizen of the US?

Andrew Jackson's and James Monroe's fathers died, separately, as far as we know, before the Treaty of Paris, before 1776, too, so..... Jackson?

That still wouldn't be 150 years though. I was assuming the 150 years nonsense was an Obama figure, not a Louisiana Lightning one... sorry

39 Here's a direct quote from Obama: "America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with [the Muslims] should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Dirty Little Secret - Most of those Japanese interned in WWII were, ummm, Japanese citizens. A significant percentage, if not majority, of those [who were also US Citizens], once interned refused to renounce loyalty to Japan [those who were not US citizens were simply POWs]. A significant percentage, if not majority, of those the US recognized as  citizens were the minor dependents of Japanese  nationals [fortionately the US did not reciprocate and use them for bayonet practice]...

Barrack  Hussein  Obama Jr, being raised in Hawaii, is quite aware of this.Hence he has given  his  stance that he will , in a general  war, side with islamists.

42 Potosi, you're trolling.  Obviously trolling.  You specifically said someone was wrong when they were right.  Just admit that you were wrong instead of trying to frame your error is some hypothetical and absurd context... which mirrors Obama's efforts with the actual issue of this post.  The italicized question in my prior comment was cut and pasted straight from your comment... there is no confusion that the question you answered was about actual presidents.

No one gives a shit that Eugene Debs ran for president.  Anyone can run for president.  Literally, dogs run for president, and are written in.  None of the above always gets tens of thousands of votes.  What would be historical is if someone with a lowish connection to this country actually won the presidency.  Obama would be an EXTREMELY unusual president, partly because his resume is about as weak as all the loser quacks who run for all the oddball parties, and partly because.  Obama is not an unusual candidate for president, as all kinds of race hustlers with no experience have ran.

If America knew that Obama prayed to allah every day for years as a child, granted through no choice of his own that we know of, and then for 20 years happily went to a church that was sympathetic to nation of Islam, and Obama titled his book and much of his Audacity rhetoric after a clear anti-semitic Camtain Insano, then Obama wouldn't be polling over 25%.  He would be a very unique president, to say the least.  And not just because he doesn't look like George Washington, who would be as unique a modern president as Obama.

"Don't forget, he's the 1st Presidential Candidate whose father is NOT an American citizen in over 150 years."

I don't know whether Dukakis' or Nader's parents became citizens.  I'm guessing they probably did.  Obama is definitely unique in that regard; having a parent who did not immigrate, but just visited, although I don't know that that means a damn thing; fact is, Obama might just as well not have had a father at all, in terms of ACTUAL influence.

Posted by: notropis at August 03, 2008 01:00 AM (l7IiS)

44

And back to Obama's supposed clarification:

His original statement was that BUSH and MCCAIN were (both) trying to scare Americans by bringing up selective pieces of Obama's biography.  So:

A) Which of those facts (race, age, ancestry, name, etc.) are Bush and McCain claiming are scary?

B) When has John McCain ever tried to scare anyone about Obama's name, color, race, ancestry, personal history?

C) When has George Bush EVER said ANYTHING about Barack Obama?

(And, anticipating the answer to "C", who is actually trying to use someone's name to scare people?)

47 ghy:

1. I was wrong. I thought when I tried to answer the question the second time that would be an indication the first answer was actually wrong.
2. Just because I copied something down doesn't mean that I understood what I was typing or reading. In my line of work that is called a "mistake". I have made at least two before, and although I endeavour to read and understand what was meant, I anticipate that this may occur again, maybe more than once.
3. I thought, and still think, that my answers support the same conclusion that you reached-- that Obama's childhood is not the one we might expect for a future President.
4. My other point was that I thought Obama had rattled off the 150 years thing, and that it was sloppy to claim 150 years when it was either 20 or 220. Unless we find out otherwise, I think we both should assume that Louisiana Lightning can speak for himself, and if he feels insulted or slighted, then he can ask for my apology, which, if this one fails to suffice, he may have under separate cover.
5. The list of candidates, which left out whatshisname from Mass or Greece, was meant to be trivial not argumentative.
6. "There is no confusion" is a statement that can only be supported by use of MROIP ( Mind Reading over Internet Protocol ) unless you were able to actually contact my mind without using my IP connection, in which case, there can be no confusion... you would then know that I was confused (again) and were just ranting to libel me for some obscure reason. Of course if you were using MROIP then we can blame it all on Microsoft's implementation or Site Meter's latest build.
7. Please stop calling me a troll. There are three very tasty looking goats on the grassy hill north of here. I should very much like to make their acquaintance after they have fattened up, and hope to surprise them with a dinner... (of sag ghost, if you must know.)
