Obama On Offshore Drilling: Uh, Um, Ah, Sure

He's redeploying to the side of the issue that about 70% of Americans are on.

"'If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done,' Obama said."
More: "[H]e told the Post he would be open to expanding the current drilling boundaries if it meant winning approval for more fuel-efficient cars, developing alternative energy sources and making the country more 'energy independent.'"
"'I think it's important for the American people to understand we're not going to drill our way out of this problem,' he said. 'It's also important to recognize if you start drilling now you won't see a drop of oil for ten years, which means its not going to have a significant impact on short-term prices. In other words, "if they want to drill, I'll drill the damn holes".

Of course with any precipitous redeployment some will unfortunately be left behind to deal with the chaos and suffer the consequences.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid can not be happy campers tonight.

This really was a bit of brilliance. Yesterday I read the GOP had a little strategy session on the energy issue and the gave on the record quotes saying they feared after the recess the Dems would pull some strings to where there would be a govt' shutdown and republicans would be blamed - I bet the Dems were supremely satisfied and confident as they were packing their bags last night. HEAD FAKE!

By staying - and Pence says they are staying through the break - it's just a nightmare scenario for the Dems - vacationing or trying to get a little campaigning in while Republicans are in town (and I bet more will come back) banging the drum in a month average American's are shelling out big bucks at the pumps for their vacation etc. etc.

Either dems cave and call a special session - win for the taxpayers and GOP OR voters are reminded that democrats rather blow town and vacation while they bleeding - SO, after this, that Government shutdown after a long leisurely stint on the beach can't likely be "blamed" on the GOP - or at least they way they had planned it.

7 I'm thinking this could be a big moment in Barry's descent from Olympus. For one, if he now goes for drilling, he's got to throw all those people who spouted the '10-year' nonsense under the bus, and now they'll have to completely change direction to keep up with their candidate.

And, if the ban is lifted and the market tumbles, there's more egg on his face.

He's been running on his judgment, which was wrong on the Surge, wrong on Iraq, wrong on oil. He only looks successful when he adopts his opponent's position.

It's one more point where his inexperience is laid bare. This could hurt him worse than Rev'rund Wright.

Man I want them to go on record with that as often as possible. I want them to go in front of televisions dozens of times so we can get a nice crispy montage of them being wrong and wrong and wrong over and over again as oil prices drop more the day the drilling ban expires.

So Dems, keep saying it: keep claiming oil companies can't get oil to market outside ten years. Keep saying the oil prices won't drop. Go on record more with that. People will remember and giggle.

14 10 years again? For all their talk about speculators they seem to be unware that said speculators are betting on future price/supply. That and Bush just announcing the end of the executive ban on drilling was followed by drops in the price of crude and sweet. I also think I read somewhere that some of the oil can get to market in not much more than a year.

19 The oil fields off the coast of California are already drilled and capped. We could have them producing within a year. Oh and prices? Gas prices have gone down .30 a gallon here since the pres announced that he'd roll back the ban on drilling. I think if we ACTUALLY had new American oil, prices would drop some more. Besides there is nothing particularly green about keeping Saudi oil workers working rather than American ones.

20 Well, Krugman is against it today. For obvious reasons.

Drilling here, under our environmental watchdogs and safeguards isn't enough. We should drill in China, Mexico, and the Middle East with their safeguards; and this will provide enough ecological benefit to justify the extra costs, losses, and spillage transporting the oil to where it will be used.

Obviously, with China, Mexico, the ME, Venezuela, Russia, etc. watching over the drilling there will be less environmental impact, enough to offset both transportation and accidents during transportation... and this will help Pelosi "save the world".

Do we usually start our process of "saving the world" doing the dumbest thing possible? Who am I kidding? Of course we do.

I'm just waiting for the proposal to outsource all U.S. drilling to China for the environmental benefits this will provide...
