"The One"

The ad is racist because it insinuates that the Messiah cannot be black.

Besides knocking the Lamb of Chicago for his presumptuousness (racist attack) and arrogance (racist attack) and narcissism (racist attack), it also might usefully piss off some religious voters, because, in all seriousness, Obama's semi-serious belief that he is sent by a Higher Power to grant us Salvation does have a bit of blasphemous edge to it. (Racist attack.)

How serious is that last bit? I have no idea. I don't know how seriously to take Obama's messianic posturing. I don't know how seriously he takes it. And I don't know how seriously annoyed a religious person might be by it.

It is there, though. I don't believe Obama thinks he's Christ, and I don't think anyone believes Obama believes he's Christ, either. But his basic message of holy transcendence through his power and his glory does seem to be one that competes, however vaguely, with actual religion.

Surely his cultists are not so enthused by his energy policy. No, they are dreaming of something bigger, something metaphysical. Perhaps not re-born into bodies incorruptible, but at the very least they expect some degree of expiation for their (and of course their nation's) sins.

His narrative is about redemption, first and foremost. And I do believe that spiritual space is filled, for many, by more established figures and better-tested metaphysics.

Thanks to Liberrocky and KP.

Heart-Ache on O-Force One: Barry's all sad that we can't talk about the real issues (see later update).

Motherfucker (racist attack), this is the one "issue" you've really been running on for two years.

Define "anyone".

2 It makes this religious person feel sad inside for the man, but in a sense he's just more honest about it. We all try to depose God and put ourselves in His place. He's just open and up front.

3 This will all end in tears.

Trust me on this one.

4 In much the same way that that Big Ass Prussian Monument to Vanquishing Our Neighbors which appeared in Barack's Germania commercials is actually now associated as the focal point for the Hippie/Gay Love-In celebration, "The One" actually refers to The Matrix Trilogy, specifically Keanu Reeves.

Barak Obama is no Bob Marley.

8 To be fair, the last bit was Obama joking around about this Messiah image of his.

9 >Obama's semi-serious belief that he is sent by a Higher Power to grant us >Salvation does have a bit of blasphemous edge to it.

That's funny.  I said the same thing when old G Dub made similar remarks.

Perhaps if another, less religious person used the term I'd not find it problematic.  But when an ostensibly Christian man uses the word epiphany to justify him gaining your vote...

Well, messiah is a not an unrelated term.  And Barack knows this.

11 As a Christian, every time I hear Obama say something, I think to myself "Christ! He's doing it again".

"We are the ones we've been waiting for."

I just can't get over that line.  He's been waiting for himself?

Very metaphysical.  He must have skipped the Oracle & the chocolate chip cookies.

That's pretty good, but maybe McCain ought to shift gears, now.  We get it; Obama's full of himself.

Maybe, start linking him to Pelosi and Reid, and let their single-digit approval ratings pull on him a while.  Like, not passing a single appropriations bill, not addressing offshore drilling, etc.

Posted by: notropis at August 01, 2008 04:47 PM (l7IiS)

I know McCain is trying to show everyone that he is "hip" and "edgy."  But as funny as they are, they don't really do anything for McCain, especially when he says he's "proud" of them.  They are just clownish.

Meanwhile, there is serious stuff going on.  (the wars, the economy, immigration, etc).  He should try to convince people he is a serious candidate.

It occurred to me...  maybe McCain is just giving up.  He's got some campaign contributions to spend before he rolls up his operation...  and he wants to use him remaining days to make Republicans laugh before Obama's inauguration.  It's going to be a long four years, and so I guess I appreciate this act of mercy on his part.

He's just going to run as many silly ads as possible.  Trash Obama as much as he can.  And when his favorable rating is in the single digits, throw all of his support behind Barr?  Or maybe he's going to quit before the convention and throw his support behind Romney or something?

If it's stupid and it works, it ain't stupid.

He's using Obama's strongest asset- his self professed agent of hopey changeyness who can heal all wounds at will- against him.  Obama's response it to say he wants to talk about the issues, but he really doesn't have a coherent stance on most of "the issues".  Typically he looks like a fumbling buffoon when cornered into talking policy details.

21 I was having a good time laughing at this ad and when it came to the end I saw it was an official McCain ad?!

Holy Cow. Hey, it could work. Let's see if we can get Obama all riled up - see if he gets flustered.

This is the most entertaining presidentical campaign that I can remember - and I've been following them since 1972.

22 I will vote for Obama.

All he has to do is part Lake Michigan and build and highway from Navy Pier to Michigan... anywhere in Michigan, I ain't particular.

Posted by: Potosi Joel at August 01, 2008 05:58 PM (TPRbZ)

23 I think these ads are smart.

When Herb Brooks, the coach of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team was preparing his kids to face the mythical Russians, the first thing he started doing was poking fun at their looks and giving them silly nicknames.

Same idea here, only the audience is independents.

Obama is a clown.  He's nothing without his media hype machine.

The McCain camp is playing this one right.  Laugh at him.  Poke fun at his overblown ego.  Tussle his hair a bit and say, "Oh, how cute. The community organizer wants to be President. Maybe in another lifetime, sport."

When he pisses and moans about distractions and issues, then you nail him on his empty track record and fairy tale proposals.

Meanwhile, let your surrogates keep hammering away at his Marxist, terrorist, and racist associations.

I wouldn't have said so two months ago, but I think McCain is gonna win this thing.

24 Absolutely, Senator Obama's biggest weakness is his ego. The best way to deal with that ego is mockery and satire, clever poking fun at how bloated and self important he is. Absolutely perfect.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at August 01, 2008 07:07 PM (0+Ggj)

25 Savvy ads - and working(44-44).

Better for McCain to point out the buffoon that is Obama, than to
trumpet his own accomplishments, which only serve to piss-off the base.

Obama and his acolytes are so very ripe for ridicule.

"To be fair, the last bit was Obama joking around about this Messiah image of his."

Yes, but Obama uses a portion of the "100 years" comment by McCain out of context all the time.

Turn about is fair play.
