The Bradley effect refers to Tom Bradley, an African-American, who was mayor of LA and was running for Govenor. He was way up in the polls, even the exit polls and was the predicted winner but he lost.

The 'effect' came from voters telling pollsters they were voting for Bradley as not to appear racist. But once inside the booth their votes went against him.

Obama is not stupid. This frames the discussion of what is and isn't racist in a way that is favorable to himself. By challenging questions about his background as being racially motivated he distracts attention from the REAL race problems. See, suggesting that Obama doesn't look like the guys on the coins won't keep him out of office. Aside from being able to pass for Abe Lincoln's penny if he grew a beard - Americans love novelty and would be happy to get some melanin into the white house. So Obama's got the twofer with this cheap accusation - he's got the accusation to hurt his opponent and more importantly he defines a "racial attack" into a thing that won't hurt him. The real race issues are gonna be tougher for him to answer so he needs to keep anyone from even thinking about them.

The Head Number One Race Problem (what is in charge) is the horrible corruption of so many black politicians in executive positions. Nothing is more important to Obama than making sure that any talk about his color is done in a way that doesn't associate him with whatever corrupt black democrat politicians afflict your part of the country. I don't think it is a coincidence that Obama wins his white primary votes in states that don't have experience of black leadership. So the more he can get the opposition to flinch from that association the better he looks. Since he has no executive or leadership experience of any sort, he has no history to refute the suspicion that he will throw his weight around in a thuggish and unseemly way just like all those other goons. So it's really better for him to charge that racism is about his looks rather than about his party or political culture.

The other OhmyGodthisscarestheshitoutofwhitepeople race problem is the absolute certainty that standing at a future president Obama's side will be a Farrakhan or a Sharpton or some such whipering in his ear that now it's time for those crackers to get a taste of the medicine. Obama has done smart to make sure we all know it won't be Jesse Jackson or Rev Wright, but that isn't the same thing as disavowing that sort of vengeful attitude in principle. In fact his mutterings about reparations will leave him suspect and rightfully so.

As crude and ugly and political as his "sorta" accusations of racism are, it's pretty easy to see why he thinks they make good sense.
