Surprise: AP's Analysis That We're Winning the War Embargoed By All But 206 Outlets, Including NYT and LAT

If a Saturday publish date doesn't reduce exposure enough, try just not running it at all.

Tom Maguire notes the AP's story failed to even mention the word "surge" -- after all, Obama is being pummeled for his obstinate opposition to it; better to not mention the victory is due (largely) to the surge -- and of course credits Bush and McCain not at all. Bush in fact is only mentioned once, in order to denigrate him (for declaring "Mission Accomplished").

2 I studied journalism and mass comm at Boston University (SPC '85).  We were taught that the wire services just provided factual stories that newspapers could publish to beef-up their own reporting.  Just when did the wire services become opinion outlets?

"Bush in fact is only mentioned once, in order to denigrate him (for declaring "Mission Accomplished")."

If and when journalism is re-established as an honorable profession, the evolution of the media into a political party, and the propagandistic smearing of one of the greatest CIC's in history, George W. Bush, will be dissected as one of the "root causes" of the Second US Civil War.

No kiddin foax.  This shit is going to either stop pretty fucking soon, or it is going to get much worse and become an existential threat to America.

4 Ace, you forget the MSM is vested in defeat. They can still HOPE our fortunes will CHANGE.

It's already that bad.  Just consider what they did to confuse us and redirect blame after 9/11.

You are absoutely correct, Idiocy.  As soon as I had written "... and become and existential threat to America." my first thought to myself was "And exactly how is it not one already?"

I think it is not presently an existential threat only in that most people understand the media is bullshitting them, so even though the media does considerable harm to our interests, it has not yet managed to gain the following of enough sheep to be an immediate danger - though not through lack of trying!

If the media starts to become truly existentially dangerous, presenting honest people with the choice of destroying the media or having their country destroyed around them, I am afraid the shit is truly going to hit the fan in a violent way.  It would be much better if the media could be reined in before that happens. I just don't know if it is possible.

I am afraid that a critical mass of leftists in the media has nearly been achieved.

That "mission accomplished" idiocy really bugs me.  It's like the way the MSM has simply redefined "swift-boating" to mean an unfair and untruthful attack when of course it means the exact opposite.

The media must have known the "mission accomplished" referred to the vessel's role in the war, and perhaps arguably to the mission of taking Saddam out of power.  The media and other lefties simply redefined it as "the war is done and completely over and we can withdraw and watch happly as Iraq turns into a first world country within a few months," then bitched about it because it didn't fit their own, personal, incorrect definition.  "Collateral damage" is another redefinition that pops to mind.  In military parlance it means anything damaged that was not meant to be damaged (vehicles, buildings, and yes, people).  The media redefined it to exclusively mean innocent causualties, then bitched about "the military hiding civilian deaths behind a code word" (this from the folks that gave us newspeak crap like "differently abled" and "vertically challenged.")

This has been going on a long time--remember how the Tet Offensive was redefined as a loss instead of a victory?--but the MSM used to keep it in reserve to be rolled out under the direst circumstances.  Now it's business as usual.

To poeple I meet who defend the media, I simply ask about the last time the media reported on their job or favorite hobby.  There inevitably follows a tirade about how wrong they got it.  Then I ask them why the hell they would think everything else in the paper is fair and accurate.

8 Hmmm.

Ok I have to ask.  What are the steps to properly insert a hyperlink?

Because I keep on screwing it up.

Posted by: memomachine at July 27, 2008 06:59 PM (3PLow)

9 memo,

Type the title of the link in the comment box, highlight it with your mouse, hit the 'Hyperlink' button in the toolbar of the comment box, type in the full URL in the 2nd field of the Source line, hit 'Insert' and 'Ok'. The title text should be underlined.

Alternatively, you can hand-code it by using the 'View/Edit Source' option, the right most button in the toolbar.

11 No shit, sherlock?

AQI in Iraq is just about beaten, yes.  Because we stopped being morons, shooting up the towns and starting making deals and spreading some $$$ among the x-regime shaykhs.

But what about the elected Iraqi government, or at least the ISCI/Dawa part of it?  (I trust the Kurds are for a semi-free, secular, semi-corrupt, semi police-state).

Without knowing whether ISCI is the cat's paw of Iran in Iraq, and their rule of Baghdad and the southern governorates (the political development of the Sunni governorates - Anbar, Salah-ad Din, Nineveh and Diyala is a work-in-progress), you can't declare victory.

Sorry for raining on your parade - there's a long way to go in Iraq.

15 ... ask about the last time the media reported on their job or favorite hobby.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I work at a place that gets regular media coverage and I've been shoved in front of a camera and interviewed more times than I can remember. We're non-partisan and are on friendly terms with the local news whores reporters. But it's almost a guarantee that a news segment on us will contain some minor factual error. So just imagine what it would be like if we were a partisan organization contrary to the MSM.

Icus has a point. We're ninety percent there, but the war's not over yet.

And it won't be "over" for many years, and maybe never - nobody said it was or ever would be.  We are up against fanatics who share no common values with us - they might as well be Martians.  The question was, why is the media so invested in preventing us from defeating them as best we can?

The lack of attainment of perfection is a favorite argument of the leftists.  It is how they hope to convince us that the world can never become better unless we follow them over the cliff.

18 So- a notoriously partisan & chronically lame-brained winger-operated rip off of Media Matters gives all the Tools in this Toolbox a "hint" about an "analysis" from- as ParisParamus properly notes at Comment #3 above- a supposed WIRE service- - & not at all incidentally a service that recently moved over to the VolksNoose side of the ledger from NEWS to NOOSE with its recent change in general managers- thereby forfeiting its former status as a fact-reporting WIRE service & walking away from recruiting anyone from the top half of any credible American school of journalism- - & Ace lets out with a "Truthiness Ho!" & you Tools dive into the water without even even first grabbing ahold of a life preserver- & you wonder why the entire Republican Party is sinking to the bottom of the political feedbag cycle head first? It's because all the high-lead content of the stuff you Tools allow into your brain pans. We "won" the Iraq War? So who did we beat- Saddam Hussein? The bodys been dead just a few years now- but effectively he was dead as a Middle East power player since Dad Bush et al chased him out of Kuwait in Gulf War 1- which I wish you retards would start accepting was in fact a Good War- because you seem to feel you need your label on at least one Good War to offset the Dems label on WWI & WWII & Korea & Nixon's continuing the nincompooperly in Nam until the North kicked our sorry asses outta there. And here's the news: no one gets to out-source their civil war. Did the we out-source ours? Did the South bring in a bunch of South American post Conquistatodore pre Columbia spear throwers & bring in a whack of Spanish blunderbus carriers? Did the North bring in a bunch of Hessian mercs & Canuck crusaders? Nope: Our Civil War was "ours" because WE fought it. Same with whats going to have to happen next in Iraq- but worse due to two big differences between 19th century North America & the 21st century Middle East: first- the fact that the Iraq Civil War to come will be a three way- at least- & second- the liklihood- HA! I speak in jest: the absolute dead solid LOCK of regional meddling- from Iran in support of their Iraq Shia du jour- from the Turks who are shitting hashish pipes right now at the idea of northern Iraq become the first ever homeland for todays edition of those scattered in diaspora- the Kurds: a billion highly intelligent very well educated ambitious extremely motivated people in search of their own version of Israel- to of course the coming massive influx of a good portion of that billion Kurdish in people & money & arms & ingenuity & freshly acquired patriotic identification with a geographic "homeland"- the House of Saud shitting hookahs over the prospect of a civil war on the doorstep in which their own Sunni kin look to continue to be treated as "incidental causualties"- & don't forget that US interests in Iraq are hardly exceeded by those of KGB Putin's Russia. HERES THE BOTTOM LINE: The Great Civil War of Iraq has not even begun.- - And here I thought Ace & his Tools at least understood military reality.

Again, meh.  Modern people want to be ruled; they'll take freedom if they have no other options, but they really don't want it much.  The MSM has picked up on that quite well, and they've picked the side that they view most likely to deliver it.

Sucks for the rest of us, but that's democracy for you.
