Dems Still Considering Gas Tax Increase

House Transportation Committee Chair Jim Oberstar continues to press for a gas tax increase. He believes that a tax hike of a dime per gallon will be necessary to pay for highway construction next year because the "Highway Trust Fund" is running on empty. I called Oberstar's office and asked if he thought the trust fund would last longer if he didn't spend more than it took in. He said he didn't understand the question.

Last year President Bush slammed Oberstar and the committee:

"From my perspective, the way it seems to have worked is that each member on that committee gets to set his or her own priority first, and then whatever is left over is spent through a funding formula."

In September, Porkbusting Senator Tom Coburn identified $2 billion worth of earmarks in this year's transportation and housing authorization plus an additional $6 billion to be paid on prior authorizations. Oberstar should go after that money before coming after ours.

Of course, highway spending isn't the only thing leading Democrats to press for gas tax increases. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair John Dingell repeatedly proposes a 50 cent gas tax increase to combat global warming. At least, he's claiming the purpose is to fight global warming. When he first proposed the increase in August 2007, the average price of a gallon of gasoline was $2.80. It is now $4.10 and we have a much better idea of how gas prices influence driving habits. Dingell's proposal hasn't changed. His accountants agree: 50 cents sounds like the right amount.

Then there was the Dem asshole who said recently that we shouldn't open up more lands to oil exploration because the petroleum companies haven;t drilled on land already leased. He actually said they'd have to eat their dinner before they could have dessert.

As if new land to test for extraction potential was some kind of special added treat just for the oil companies that were, for no good reason ignoring lands already available. Nevermind that those areas had already been examined and found lacking any deposits that could extracted at an economically viable cost. Did this jackass think the oil companies don't review their survey records to see if an existing lease becomes viable due to rising prices in the crude market?

Do these idiots think that Algor's miraculous alternative enrgy sources are going to spring into existence if we just believe hard enough, so we the children must be denied new petroleum sources in order to shape our willingness to believe in fairies?

4 If this revenue shortfall is due to people driving less, which is due to higher gas prices, wouldn't it follow that we should be revising downward the estimates of money needed to maintain our roadways?  Less use = less wear, right?

Posted by: bunny boy at July 19, 2008 01:40 PM (Q2BF8)

5 I can't speak for the whole country, but in my area they're tearing up the roads all over the freaking place. Massive construction projects, long-term stuff.

I would not be surprised if the budget shortfall was entirely due to increased spending, at the dumbest possible time.

How about opening up those pre-drilled California wells that are just waiting for pumps? We could start processing that almost immediately. That should help the prices, allowing increased usage, and they'd get some of their precious tax revenue back.

Yeah right!

People have always voted for DemocRat's against their own best interest's, this time won't be any different.

Having said that, I don't know how ANYONE in their right mind could vote for a DemocRat, but then again, there are a lot of stupid people out there.

9 Another thing to take into account, is that Americans in general are using less gas... which means less gallons sold & then less tax income for the government to spend w/ abandon. Expect a raise in taxes to make up for the shortcome in income the state & Federal governemnts are used to having or have prjected on having based upon last year's numbers.

Maybe instead of taxing the drivers the Democrats could just seize all the assets of the Evil Big Oil Interests (TM), sell them to George Soros, and give the taxpayers a rebate?

Less use = less wear, right?

You are correct sir.  However, there are govenment paid road crews to pay for.  Surely you don't expect them to be laid off or reassigned to another position do you?

12 This isn't the least bit surprising to just about anyone who lives in the Southeast, and enjoyed the last 12-18 months of drought.  Since we did such a bangup job conserving water, usage was down, so revenue was down.  So the obvious answer is to raise rates to make up for the "shortfall".

13 Democrats are clueless on the energy issue.  They want to limit our options in every way.  Regulations and more taxes aren't going to solve our problems.  I made a video that promotes using a variety of energy sources available to us domestically including expanding domestic oil and natural gas exploration and production.

14 Hmm. Typical liberal mindset, throw our money at a problem and it will go away. I hate these bastards. I know, hate is a strong word. I don't hate your average liberal on the street, I have many friends who are going to throw their vote away on Obama. I hate liberal politcians. They ruin everything they touch. Don't like something? Pass a law and raise taxes. Did you get vetoed? That's okay, just sneak a couple lines into a 13,000 page bill proposal that no one will ever read. Carbon offsets? Are you kidding me? What fucking planet are you from? Do you really think in your brain damaged noggin that people will fall for this shit? Oh wait, they do, they're called the moron constituents who voted you into office, provided you didn't steal the election by using names from cemetery listings. I know, Republicans have their fair share of wackjobs too but at least the party is somewhat counterbalanced by people who believe in our God given right of freedom. Not a bunch of damned Socialists who think we're a bunch of drooling retards that don't know how to spend our income or even how to think. I'm in a horrible mood. I've been up since 3 am and can't sleep so as a result, I'm taking my anger out on the people I dislike the most. I'm normally a jovial, soft spoken kinda guy but there are times when I want walk up to someone like Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid, slap the shit out of them and tell them to fuck off. That's it, I'm done. If I've offended anybody, get over it. At least I'm honest enough to admit that as a flawed human being, I have a bad day on the rare occasion and this happens to be one of them.

15 I was wrong about the Democrats doing nothing about high gas prices.

They just keep raising them.
