5 This is one thing I don't understand about polls. Don't they take history into account before publishing? When was the last time a candidate won the general election by 15 points? Reagan? People may see Bush as bad but he's no Carter. If your poll ends up that way then you have done something wrong by definition. Demand you're money back from the pollster and move on.

I meant presidential elections. Polling for congressional elections is tricky a'cause of the macaca factor. I might add 1998 was projected to be a Republican blitzkrieg but the Dems almost took back the Congress.

One thing about 1998 was that many hard core conservatives sat out because they thought Newt wasn't fighting Clinton enough. Coupled with a VERY motivated lib base that year to try to thwart impeachment proceedings, and that is what led to the results.

But back to Newsweek:
"Barack finally got his bounce."

Yeah. The Deciders did it for him. They will keep messing with polling and samples until they get the results they want, then trumpet Obama's "inevitability" until it does become accepted by the undecideds they are trying to sway, the Dems they are trying to reaffirm, and the Republicans they are trying to depress and convince they shouldn't even bother voting in November.

Newsweek is notorious for doing this with polls just to get shock attention. Remember in 2004 after the first debate when they gave Kerry something like a 10point swing?

Too bad this poll will be the meme for the Sunday shows.
