Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann Jockey for Right to Desecrate Tim Russert's Legacy

Both cable clowns are pitching themselves for the Meet the Press show, both deny it, and both are deemed by an "insider" to be delusional to think the network would even consider either of them.

The insider said, "They're cable. They're far too partisan. They have no gravitas. If gravitas is eight letters, they're about seven letters short."

Keith Olbermann, the scuttlebutt goes, is threatening to quit if he doesn't get the gig.

I do wonder what NBC's other options are, though. David Gregory? David Schuster? (Giggle to both.)

Who are their other higher-profile options?

I don't know. Seems to me they'd have to go outside the organization for a suitable replacement.

1 Russert is regarded as a giant because he was a decent guy, regarded as generally fair and showed a little concern on the issue of media bias. Isn't that setting the bar a little low for journalists? What does it tell you about the profession?

Watching the mourning by the press corps over Tim Russert's passing I thought: Man, they act like he was the Edward Murrow of his generation. Then, looking at the roster of clowns and sad sacks being considered to replace him on Meet the Press, I realized Russert pretty much was the Edward Murrow of his generation. And that's pretty goddam sad.

9 They ought to do something astonishing and find one of the better news bloggers and give them a shot at it - they may be partisan, but a great many of them are also avowed enemies of media bias, so they would have both internal and external pressure to be scrupulously fair. They would also come with a built-in audience of readers that would otherwise abandon the program if it's given to a hack like Olbermann.

11 They definitely need to go outside NBC for this. Plus it's just MTP, the rest, WASH bureau chief, etc should be split up among staffers which will keep the troops happy. I know it sounds crazy but I would pick Bob Beckel if I was head of NBC. These shows need a curmudgeony type ala Russert, McLaughlin.

Who would be perfect and could do everything Russert did and more?

Chris Wallace, but that would take a deal of as tough as Arod going from the Rangers to the Yankees and I don't see that happening. NBC should attempt it though as it would instantly make them across the board tops for a long time in the MSM networks. Fox survives without him but NBC would thrive.

MSNC has a problem with Olbermann: he gets enough ratings that they can't just toss him, but he's so ludricous that they can't put him in any position that requires any credibility.

And Matthews has devolved into a boring partisan hack, and his broadcast skills don't seem that good either.

So more than likely MSNBC will have to go with a backbencher like how Russert was when he took over MTP in the early 90's.

Tom Brocaw if he'd take it. You aren't going to get conservative on NBC but Brocaw is head and shoulders above any of the remaining "journalists" there.

I want to say what a wonderful person I think Russert was and he was on so many levels. His faith, his love of family, his love of country, his generosity. I hate to see him disparaged. Of course he had his personal opinions as we all do but he did a great job putting his personal feelings aside and did a brilliant job of politcal journalism. They have to go with either Brokaw, Williams or someone outside the company. Unless the plan is to totally devalue their news brand and the unique thing that Russert built with Meet The Press.

Actually, they could do what Jonah Goldberg mention and that's return the show to Meet The Press and not just Meet Tim Russert (or his replacement). If they went back to the panel format the moderator isn't as important (but it still can't be Tweedledouche or Tweedledoucher).

Matthews is an embarrassing, spluttering partisan, not a news man, and Olbermann is a mentally unstable laughingstock - did you see his diatribe against Bush where he told him to shut the hell up? Any responsible news organization would have canned him before the next commercial break. But this is NBC, so it didn't happen.

I think it's going to be a woman. Norah O'Donnell, perhaps. Sure she's as partisan as anyone at NBC, but at least she's easy on the eyes. Who would you rather look at for an hour, her or Sheiffer or Stepanopolous?
