Florida Gov. Crist Reverses Position on Offshore Drilling

Flip-flop? Not really. Taking a position at $45 per barrel oil doesn't mean you'd still take that same position at $145 per barrel oil. As the costs of a policy change, the benefit of the bargain changes too.

McCain can learn something from Crist.

Gov. Charlie Crist backed away from his long-held opposition to offshore drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico and applauded Sen. John McCain's call to lift a federal moratorium on coastal state oil drilling, saying the Republican presidential candidate's proposal "is certainly appropriate."

Crist went on to say he believes that drilling for oil in the Gulf could possibly bring down gas prices and that he wants a study on the issue.

"I hope I have a reputation of wanting to protect this environment, because I do. But I also have to balance that, as every citizen does, with what's happening to Florida families, what's happening to this economy, how dependent we are on foreign oil. And how difficult is that for our fellow Floridians and our fellow Americans and the drag that it's having on our economy is obvious. We're a tourist state. We have to protect the beauty of Florida. But people need to have the opportunity to drive here and be able to afford to do that, too," Crist said.

"Reaching a conclusion about what's right or not right at this juncture is hard to do. There are new technologies available that people who are scientists and much more learned about this kind of thing than I should weigh in on," Crist said today.

Studies are good. They allow a politician to blame an outside authority for his change of position.

Let's hear McCain call for some "studies" on ANWR.

This actually vindicates McCain, partly, on his hedge/dodge of punting the question to the states. It gets us to the same place of the states, in turn, enact the right policy.

I expected Florida to do this, though. They're not lunatics like Californians.

And if the states should be permitted to make these decisions, why doesn't McCain leave the ANWR question to Alaskans? The Alaskans have been chomping at the bit to drill in ANWR since forever ago.

2 I expected Florida to do this, though.

I didn't.  Crist has been a pretty rabid eco-moonbat previously.  I suppose the thought of mega-buck tourism tax dollars drying up would terrify even Al Gore since FL doesn't have a state income tax that could be quickly jacked up (indeed, a state income tax is explicitly prohibited by the state's constitution)

3 They allow a politician to blame an outside authority for his change of position.

It also allows them to delay a decision for as long as it takes to do a study.  What's likely in this case...a year?  Two?

5 why doesn't McCain leave the ANWR question to Alaskans?

For some bizarre reason, ANWR has become a purely symbolic issue.  One's position on ANWR has nothing to do with the reality of ANWR; it's used to measure whether or not somebody cares about the environment.

15 Well, at least Crist is willing to look at the options and consider what needs to be done. it's not the stuff of legends, but it will do for the moment.

Alaskans ought to just invite the oil companies to survey in non-ANWR parts of Alaska. If something comes up, they can drill the wells and tell the EPA to go jump in Prudhoe Bay. It would be cool if Dubya authorized drilling in ANWR as last-minute business in December or January, a la the Clinton playbook. The Obamessiah would face the decision of letting it go, or stopping it and facing the music in 2010. Yeah it's dirty pool, but after all the low ones the Dems have pulled since 1992 or so, payback would be sweet.

The offshore drilling moratorium is also a federal mandate.  Seems if one would be willing to do one, it wouldn't be much work for the other.

20 I've got a better idea.  Asses fifty cents per gallon tax on petroleum fuels for all states that don't allow drilling. This will then be distributed to "drill willing" states in proportion to the fuel tax collected from each state. The only reason FL is interested now is because they see a chance to grab revenue from leases off its coast. Since there are more states that allow drilling as opposed to those who do not, this should be easy legislation. Might want to do something similar for refineries and power plants.

31 Just sign ANWR to the Canadians.  We'd have oil in about three months.

The trick will be to make coastal states dependent on oil revenue.  Make them need it.  Better offshore oil than casinos, IMO.

Here's a really quick way to skip the fucking study and get some really fast answers on how fucking dangerous offshore drilling is:

Ask Louisiana and Texas.

See, that's because THEY'RE FUCKING DRILLING RIGHT NOW.

Jesus H. Christ, I can't believe this.  I've lived in Texas for roughly twenty-five years, and I've been on the Galveston beach dozens of times, and looked at the fucking drilling rigs off in the distance.

Still there!

No oil slicks, no dead birds, no otters in agony, no beached whales, no starving polar bears, no desperate penguins.

Nope.

Just some fucking rigs, way off in the distance.

And a shitload of revenue for Texas.  See, we don't have a fucking state income tax.  That's because we fucking drill and get paid.

GD dumbass motherfuckers.

Oh well, I should be happy.  It looks like the tide is turning.  Florida is dying right now, from the real estate meltdown, high gas prices and the economic slowdown, which is killing tourism.

So Charlie finally figured out he could make money off that shit, and boy does Florida need money.  So does California.  In fact, both states are bankrupcy candidates.  They are, by far, in the worst shape of all fifty.

But guess who isn't anywhere near a financial crisis?  Texas.

I suspect that having the office switch board lighting up like a Cristmas tree had something to do with his back-tracking. And I wouldn't be surprised that some of the politicos whispered into his ear about pumping oil is like having a never-ending supply of tax money.

Look, let's get the idea that politicians are 1) smarter than the public or 2) leaders put to rest.  Very, very few are.  Most are people who get and keep their jobs not by leading public opinion but by reading it and adjusting their messages.

McCain and Crist haven't suddently discovered that there are billions of dollars sitting untapped under our borders.  They have discovered that the concept of getting those dollars is now more popular, or at least less unpopular, than saving mythical polar bears and what they are really trying to harvest here is votes.  McCain has been on both sides of this issue as the winds and elections blow.  Crist is now so firmly attached to McCain and his fortunes that if McCain farts, Crist is there with the toilet paper just in case it's a wet one.

Giving McCain or Crist points toward their profile in courage award for following public opinion on this issue is a joke.  If the oil price bubble burst tomorrow, and it may, this issue will disappear as fast as an illegal in LA.

Perhaps Crist came to the realization that not allowing drilling means no revenue now, and permanent loss of revenue as the Chicoms pump.  The Cubans have made $1.7B since leasing to the Chicoms.  That money could have been Florida's.  That oil might have helped keep price increases down.  No U.S. drilling would mean Florida and the US would never receive the benefit of its natural resource, two communist countries will.  Somehow that doesn't seem very free-market capitalism driven.

BTW the Cuba/China leasing was made possible by a treaty Carter signed on 12/16/77.  Fortunately, it has to be re-signed every two years and, unfortunately, W signed it in 2005.  China started drilling in 2006.

Life-long Floridian here.

I have no problem with Crist changing his stance on this issue. Were it not an election year, the current energy situation might well have caused this shift anyway. Crist is not going to get the nod for V.P.: Florida is already going Republican and picking Crist wouldn't be likely to change a lot of minds around here. Now, were it not for bad timing, J.E.B. would be the better candidate.

I had wondered whether Crist was brushing up on his bonafides when he pushed through to a vote the reduction in property taxes last year, but I suspect he's planning something further down the road.

As for the property tax reduction, it didn't really amount to much for an individual who can afford to pay the taxes but, for those such as my mother who struggle to get by and needs assistance from me to pay those taxes, it means a great deal. The fact that so many in Florida were so angry about a Republican cutting taxes still baffles me. The local administrations throughout the state started poor-mouthing about how the reduction would impact negatively each county's ability to fund the police and fire departments and would require a reduction in school funding. My opinion; that ship just doesn't fucking float. Not while the Duval County taxpayers are funding a fucking $400M county courthouse that rivals the monuments on the mall in D.C.

Republicans elected Crist and every damn time he acts like a Republican, he gets spat upon. Frankly, it's a prime example of how friggin' ill-defined the party has become when the voters cannot even recognize a conservative ideal when they see one.

57 I think this issue could be solved without politicians, at least initially. The majority of Americans support drilling and / or extracting fuel from shale and coal, however there is a small minority that is stopping the advancement. I believe that the trucker's unions and individual truck drivers could get things moving by doing their part to help the environment and let the environmentalists put their money where their mouths are. The truckers could boycott deliveries in the moonbat strongholds. Just off the top of my head, I would say that reducing the fuel consumption needs from not delivering to California, New York, Washington D.C., and Massachusetts would probably bring about actual debate about the issues as opposed to blindly following the Goracle's prophesy. It would probably not take too long for these folks to realize the impact of their own policies when they have to pay market value in a very limited supply market.

Posted by: Mike at June 18, 2008 08:13 AM (YE/G9)

58

Mike, the non-union truckers attempted a 'strike' or, rather, a slow-down just a few short weeks ago but the industry is in such a state at the present that, for many, just a few days of refusing work can, quite literally, mean the difference in life or death for many carriers. It's one thing to sacrifice a bit of money for principles, quite the other when you have a family and employees who are trusting you with their livelihoods.

In the first quarter of 2008 alone, more than 1000 TL companies went out of business. Their has been a strong push over the past few years for TL companies to regionalize rather than attempt to pull transcontinental and the larger, healthier companies are then buying other companies in order to expand their network, i.e., a TL company in Chattanooga, TN purchases other small to midsize firms in Alabama, Florida, North Carolina and Kentucky to create a network. Today, for every mile a loaded long-haul trucker pulls, he is losing an average of $1. Many might ask why they would accept a loss on every move, well, the answer is no more complicated than the logic behind a clearance sale at your local department store: cost offsets. Trucking companies must pay the note and the insurance and the taxes on their trucks every month whether business is good or bad and, when times are bad, they cannot afford to let their tractors sit idle and release their drivers because, just a few months later the business will be good again and they will be left struggling to find drivers.

And, as I've stated in other comment sections here in the past, the environmental movement is forcing ever more legislation such as the California ports' Clean Air Act which, on the surface seems okay, but will force a great many small business owners out of business. And, who is one of the ring-leaders in the fiasco, well, none other than one James Hoffa Jr.

Rail intermodal is one solution to the green b.s. that is being shoved down our throats but cannot be all things to every one. I am very proud that we are able to work with TL companies to create better operating and cost efficiencies for them, creating opportnities for trucking companies and intermodal companies alike.

As someone who got her start working for one of the largest unionized companies in the world and working at several smaller to midsize, non-union companies thereafter, my heart is in trucking and my sympathies are with the guys and gals that keep our nation running, at no small cost to them or their families.

60 Anyone who says that offshore US oil drilling will solve our energy problem or in any signifacant way is lying, lying, lying through their teeth. Weve run the calculations and found that the amount of oil offshore is so small it would not even make a difference. In fact, if it was all we used, it would all be gone in around 2-4 years! It can only account for a very small percentage of our energy needs, and furthermore, because of the time needed to actually find it and put in rigs etc, it would be perhaps 5 or 10 years before there was oil from these sources. In fact, the amount of oil is so small it might not even be worth it economically to try to extract it because the cost is so great compared to the relatively small amount of oil produced. Remember that a discovery of 5 billion gallons sounds like a lot but its nothing compared to how much we use, which is 20 million gallons PER DAY. Run the numbers. It certainly is not worth risking the health and well being of our fragile offshore environments, perhaps polluting and destroying the health of our children forever for oil that will last perhaps a few years, This is supreme greed, callousness and uncaring i am so surprised the utterly heartless, cruel, evil minded, conservative . The only real solution to our energy problem is renewables, drilling for oil is a dangerous distraction, from what we need to be doing and that is finding a long term solution. All of the oil will be gone in 40 years, and we need the oil for other things besides burning it in cars, like plastic. We need to stop burning it as fuel ASAP, due to PROVEN global climate change effects, the deleterious effects on our childrens health and future. We need to find other alternatives now. I think the push for drilling is a triick by conservatives to divert peoples attention away from the real and only solution to our energy problem and that is to STOP OIL CONSUMPTION all together. There is simply not enough oil domestically to make us energy independant, and the environmental consequences are too much. I ask, what good is your oil if children are DYING from carcinogens in your water from the drilling and operations of your proud oil companies. Stop thinking about your profits and your oil company stocks, and start thinking about the health of future generations. NO OIL DRILLING is safe. If an oil company tells you its environmentally friendly, dont fall for it. They are not and it is impossible. They will whitewash everything they do and cover up how they are ruining the environment, they will not of course openly admit they are polluting the environment, they will try to conceal the ugly truth that they are. The oil company propoganda machine will tell you whatever you want to hear and cover up reality. Oil drilling always results in pollution which causes ill health and endangers the lives of children. If we really want to solve our energy problem without destrouing our childrens future, the only responsible thing to do is to push for energy efficiecny and fuel standards. We could reduce our foreign oil dependance far more than any offshore oil drilling, this could save more oil than you could produce offshore. Bush and Cheney, have stalled on these efforts, we could have had 40 mpg fuel standards years ago. Why not? Because Bush and Cheney are hired henchmen of the oil companies and only care about their profits and would willingly endanger and poison our children if this increased oil company profits. They are liars and cheats and everything they come out of their mouths nearly is a lie. We also need an ":Appolo Program" to begin developing renewable energy sources. Again the bushies have given lip service to this but we still spend a drop in the bucket on this compred to our war making budget for the war of lies boomndoggle in iraq. IF we have not been in iraq we could have used that to solve our energy problem FOREVER and do so without ruining our childrens future health. Why do people still vote for bush and the republicans? That is what really amazes me, because in everyway they are leading us to total and utter disaster adn have put a roadblock before any real responsible solutions.
