Obama: High Gas Prices are Just Fine By Me, I Just Wish We Could Have Raised Them More Slowly
Update: Nurse Bloomberg Says Raise Taxes on Gas, It's the Only Way To Force People To Use Less

At Hot Air, video of the classic Kinsley Gaffe, that is, the mistake of a politician admitting what he really thinks.

This is not going to be a campaign issue because The Narrative (TM) is so powerful. Republicans, and only Republicans, want high gas prices, because it helps out their oil-company buddies. (This despite the fact that Republicans are fighting to increase supply and thus lower per-unit profits on petroleum.)

But of course the Democrats want high energy prices. High petroleum prices encourage conservation by punishing oil and gas use, and also make those much-heralded "alternative energy sources" more competitive, not by increasing the efficiency or lowering the cost of such hypothetical sources, but by raising the cost of their competition.

The gas tax holiday is not a good idea because it does nothing at all to cure the fundamental problem of ever-increasing demand and stagnant supply (in fact, it marginally exacerbates it), but that's not of course why Obama opposes it. He opposes it because he thinks that using gas and oil is inherently evil, and by decreasing (even temporarily) the cost for such use, we increase the world supply of Evil.

Again, the MSM will simply not report on the dirty little open secret that liberal elitist Democrats have long been the most eager supporters of skyrocketing energy prices. If the market had not accomplished this goal for them, they would have done so through taxes or by further restricting supply.

John McCain could beat Obama like a red-headed stepchild on this issue, but of course Mr. Courage and Integrity is too busy pushing the same idiotic policies forced upon him by the Big Bullies at the New York Times editorial table.

And while we're not speaking of drilling in ANWR -- check out Jonah Goldberg's pictures of this desolate tundra wasteland that we've made it such a high national priority to protect from even the slightest blight. 19 million acres of this barren ice-crap, and we can't even drill on 2000 of them.

In a rain forest, there's some truth to the idea that if you destroy even a small section of jungle, you wipe out a "whole ecosystem." Jungle life is ferociously diverse and changes acre by acre like a city changes neighborhood by neighborhood.

That's not the case with ANWR. The same stunted pygmy-grass and same arctic tundra-vermin in any particular acre of this ice-glinted shithole are the same ones you'll find in all 19 million acres of it. (That is, for those acres that can actually support complex life at all.)

anwrvsgrandcanyon.jpg
Double Vision: ANWR vs. the Grand Canyon.
Can you tell them apart?

So we're not drilling because we fear that if we do some microscopic ice-worms might have to migrate a few acres to continue enjoying their wondrous lifestyles eating frost-lichens.

And John McCain supports this because he doesn't want liberals to say bad things about him.

At least Barack Obama has an ideological reason for his absurd position. John McCain merely has vanity.

Thanks to Dave at Garfield Ridge for the reminder about Goldberg's ANWR pics.

More: DrewM recommends another Goldberg column:

In this sense the whole area is really just a Rorschach test for the imagination. There's little doubt that for much of human history most reasonable people would have considered this spot the definition of the word "godforsaken." You need not look back, for evidence, to the ancient pilgrims who died on the frozen tundra. You could simply read an old copy of the Washington Post from 14 years ago: "[T]hat part of the [ANWR] is one of the bleakest, most remote places on this continent, and there is hardly any other where drilling would have less impact on the surrounding life."

Two decades have intervened, and an environmental fatwa has been issued declaring that the word "pristine" is synonymous with "beautiful" or "sacred." Of course, anyone who has seen a mint-condition AMC Gremlin knows that pristineness and aesthetic appeal have only a coincidental relationship. Even ANWR fetishists concede that in the winter, with its complete darkness and 70-below-zero temperatures-not counting wind chill-this is no paradise.

But then, it's no paradise in the summertime either. During the winter, the entire coastal plain is covered by a vast tarp of ice; when the sun comes back, the resulting thaw creates, well, lots of puddles. These patches of freestanding water pock the flat tundra for as far as the eye can see; that's why this barren region is the only place the U.S. government recognizes as both a desert and a wetland. The water in an old tire can breed thousands of mosquitoes; a puddle in a junkyard, millions. ANWR is the Great Kingdom of the Mosquitoes.

...

Today, crews aren't allowed on the tundra. "If I took a leak out there, I'd get fired," an engineer tells me. "In the winter, if you spill some coffee into the snow, you'd better go get a shovel and dig it up."

...

"I knew a guy who got fired for throwing a rock at a fox," the former ranger tells me, with great exasperation. He wasn't throwing rocks for sport, mind you; apparently almost all of the Arctic foxes are rabid. If you get bitten by a rabid fox with inactive rabies, you get those infamous shots. If you get bitten by a fox with active rabies, the company pays for your funeral. "Every single fox head I've sent to Anchorage for testing has come up positive," he explains. I make a mental note to thank God that I don't have a job that requires the harvesting of rabid fox heads.

Madness.

Thanks to Slublog again for the "Double Vision" pic, too.

UPDATE: Bloomberg agrees with Obama.

Well, maybe this picture of ANWR better represents the National Treasure that is ANWR -  Maybe Maverick was confused by the colors of spring.

I mean seriously - I'd pay some big $$$ to spend my summer vacation here.  I guess this is where the endangered polar bears hibernate.

ANWR vs. the Grand Canyon. Can you tell them apart?

Why yes I can. And I'd drill both of them. And then I'd pump both of them dry.

Hmmm ... that may not read exactly how I meant it.

I loathe Sen. John McCain.

And if that isn't bad enough, there's THIS.

13 Ace, I think you're wrong on one thing here: McCain supports this crap because he truly believes in it. Not doubting your premise about his eagerness to suck up to his erstwhile pals in the MSM, necessarily. But from his various statements on the issue, he does seem to have his heart in it. Regrettably.

14 But of course the Democrats want high energy prices. High petroleum prices encourage conservation by punishing oil and gas use...

That's not the only reason why Dems like high energy prices. Most Dems like it because it gives them something to promise the people. In this case, they promise "relief at the pump."

The Dems love natural disasters, too. With the advent of global-warming hysteria, the Dems look forward to hurricanes and tornadoes so they can promise the people that with them in power these events will not occur.

Democrats have built their party on empty promises. They never shy away from delivering promises. Which reminds me of why I support Republicans. I used to say that Democrats and Republicans both suck, but Democrats promise me everything and give me nothing, whereas Republicans promise me nothing and give me nothing.

15 Sorry Bman - it's all about the Polar Bear.   The cacafuego batshitters believe all polar bears live in the 2000 acre proposed site.  Hell, they even convinced Maverick and Kempthorne.

I remember hearing on Michael Savage, I think it was, a few weeks ago about how caribou actually gravitate toward industrial fixtures in their midst because they provide warmth and respite from their bleak existence they otherwise wouldn't have.  So caribou would actually congregate in larger numbers than they already do if we started drilling in ANWR, drawn toward those oil pipelines the environmental lobby decries as a blight on the landscape.

So if you care about the caribou population, you would welcome drilling in ANWR, because they would fuck like never before.

19 By the way, why aren't we talking about the next shoe to drop on our heads: McCain's Veep?

I'm thinking Chuck Hagel, now. I mean, Hagel's wife supports Obama and Hagel proves to the people that the McCain presidency won't be Bush III, what with Hagel's desire to pullout of Iraq. What more could you want?

Then there's Rudy Guiliani who has more skeletons in his closet and personal scandals than a Kennedy clan member. Rudy will be great in Florida where he'll spend the next 5 months gathering several hundred votes for himself and McCain.

Finally, we have Steve Forbes. McCain can pu;; Forbes out of the cellar, dust him off, and we can all re-live the days of Dole/Kemp and witness the least exciting, most gracious, and uninspiring campaigns in American history.

They also have the added bonus of fucking over regular people, which is always a Dem priority.

23 What you morontards don't understand is that not voting for McCain to stop us from developing our domestic oil supplies is the same as voting for Obama to stop us from developing our own oil supplies. Is that what you want? Huh? Huh?

Posted by: Typical McCainiac at June 11, 2008 05:49 PM (/0sRQ)

24 Whenever I see a news story on TV about ANWR, they typically show eagles soaring against a backdrop of forested snow capped mountains, not the vast ice-covered flat-as-a Walmart parking lot (minus the cars) that ANWR actually is.

Posted by: profligatewaste at June 11, 2008 05:58 PM (4n+vR)

25 i think we should drill in ANWR, and on the outer continental shelf, but the Republican congress tried and failed in 2006 to pass the bills it would take to get the OCS drilling done in 2006, and a lot of their opposition was from both Republicans and Dems in Florida. Plus, Florida is a big swing state.

McCain has proposed sweetening the pot (more royalties) for the coastal states to get their legislators' support for OCS drilling. It's going to take that, and/or 100 million seriously pissed off energy consumers to get this done, apparently.

27 Didn't the libtards promise gas prices would go down if they won Congress in 06? Great to see them stick to their promises.

Whenever someone says "We just want to tax something to make it more expensive so people won't use it" (and remember, this crappy thinking got a toehold because no one cared about smokers), I have a simple question.  "If that is indeed your only reason, then the tax money collected should be removed from circulation, thus paying down the national debt.  It must not be added to the general fund or used in any way."

Suddenly they seem to have other reasons for raising the taxes than just "it's for their own good."

Posted by: Manji at June 11, 2008 06:59 PM (sTpCF)

29 Can somebody get in touch with Mrs. McCain and tell her Juan's position on not drilling for oil is costing her a fortune in filling up her beer trucks?  America would sure appreciate it.

Posted by: RWB at June 11, 2008 07:06 PM (JFCl4)

30

The price of fuel is presently high enough to make the libtards want to raise hell and annoy the crap out of 'Big Oil' with their endless accusations, investigations, and threats of "windfall" taxes.

So, for all of their bitching and belly-aching, they're really just fine with high prices, just so long as it is government and not private enterprise that profits most.

And Stace...correct.

In fact, in Jacksonville, even when confronted daily with sickly, rabid raccoons (there are two types of rabies, ya know.) one must actually have trapped the animal before animal control will even come out to investigate. Their response "Every neighborhood in Jax has rabid raccoons and most don't even have signs of the disease...they eventually die on their own."

No longer are the dreaded shots to the belly the remedy. Just a few shots, over a period of weeks, just like any other shot one would receive.

I call bullshit.  McCain and everybody else in D.C. is spoon-fed their information by staff.

I can work and live on any NWR I have requested permission for, but I can't do so in ANWR, which by itself makes it the opposite of the Grand Canyon.  I did the biology work for a base McCain once commanded and have written him and given him a chance to consider a different viewpoint.  Let's see what he does on this, if he ever listens to anybody but staff that are fed their facts.

I don't happen to think ANWR is a wasteland, I think it's pretty great, but then I like worms and such.  However, there is no reason that an area like that can't be properly accessed, if somebody could study it.  There is no reason in the world that an area the size of South Carolina can't be accessed by the American people, or a qualified biologist, except that it is closed off by the people we pay that decide that is so.

How is ANWR any different than any other NWR?  Well, it isn't.  However, no law maker on Capitol Hill knows shit about that place, except for VIP tours by air.  Ordinary citizens have no access to the area and even non-FW Service biologists have no access.  It seems to me the Grand Canyon is accessed by mules, even though I've told my girlfriend if she really wants to do that, I'll stay in the hot tub at the hotel.  I don't much like heights and a view that includes mule-butts all day doesn't help much.

33 To me this is a perfect example of the left's ideology devoid of reason. I lived for many years in San Jose and I once had a heated argument about this subject with a coworker. His logic was that there should be someplace on earth where he could hike and not have to look at the junk mankind has left behind. Seems the same logic applies to Kennedy's fight against offshore wind in MA. This was in the south bay area, and it is impossible to drive anywhere without going around the bay. The bay -- a beautiful estuary ringed by mounds of garbage. No lie -- check out google maps and you will see the mountainous dumps. That was not a problem to him -- ANWR drilling was.
