| Gallup: Fewer Americans Blame Oil Companies, More Americans Say DrillEven as the price of oil nearly doubled over the last year, the percentage of Americans pointing the finger of blame at oil companies fell, from 37% a year ago to 20%. And 57% favor drilling in areas of the US that are currrently off limits. Other factors measured, a drop in the percentage of Americans blaming high gas prices on the Iraq war, and single digit percentages blaming speculators (6%) and a weaker US dollar (4%). Those pointing to economic forces and supply vs. demand up from 10% to 15%. Meanwhile Senate Democrats recommend imposing "a 25 percent tax on profits over what would be determined "reasonable" and would allow oil companies to avoid paying the tax if they invest the money in alternative energy projects or refinery expansion". Can't wait to see what "reasonable" is. But apparently voters in Union County South Dakota want to help one company avoid paying that tax.A new refinery and shifting public attitudes regarding the price of oil? I think Slublog is getting results. And he deserves a sandwich, and maybe even a new BB gun. Comments1

Even though it would take years to get everything on line, it would be worth it simply to set the market. If we threw tons of resources at building the requisite infrastructure to drill ANWR, Walker Ridge, and Bakken; it would create jobs and decrease our dependence on hostile regimes. We're already the #3 producer in the world, if we doubled our output we'd be #1. Assuming that American demand for oil kept declining (hybrids, energy conservation efforts, etc) over the 7 to 10 years that it would take to get these locations up and running, we could be energy independent. While standing at the pump lately, I've noticed no one's happy (coincidence? - I think not). And when the conversation starts (usually by me), everyone - even the latte swilling Gaia-ists with the "Free Tibet" bumper stickers on their SUV - recognizes that the problem is 1) based upon growing demand in China and India, 2) a weak dollar, and 3) idiot politicians. The real message, as I'm reading it, is: Maybe we voters can't do anything about 1 or 2, but we sure-as-hell have some control over 3. "Throw 'em all out". Don't vote for any incumbent. None. How about more blame for patently stupid restrictions on offshore drilling and oil shale development?

Last month, the U.S. Senate's Appropriations Committee voted 15-14 to kill a bill that would have ended a one-year moratorium on enacting rules for oil shale development on federal lands (which is where the best oil shale is located). Most maddening of all - at least to someone like myself not steeped in the wacky ways of Washington - the swing vote on the appropriations committee, U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., voted with the majority even though she actually opposes the moratorium.
"Sen. Salazar asked me to vote no. I did so at his request," Landrieu told The Rocky Mountain News. A Landrieu staffer contacted by Fortune doesn't dispute this, but notes that Landrieu did propose a compromise which Republicans rejected. Arghh! She was speaking of U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., who has emerged as the Senate's leading oil shale opponent. Salazar inserted the aforementioned moratorium into an omnibus spending bill last December, and in May he proposed a new bill that would extend the moratorium another year. Salazar's efforts have essentially pulled the rug out from under Shell (RDSA) and other oil companies which have invested many, many millions into oil shale research since the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which established the original framework for commercial leasing of oil shale lands. (Last year, oil shale represented Shell's single biggest R&D expenditure.) Salazar says he's simply trying to slow things down in order to ensure environmental considerations don't get trampled in the rush to turn western Colorado into a new Prudhoe Bay. But, ironically, his bid to extend the moratorium comes at a time when his fellow Senate Democrats have been blasting Big Oil for not reinvesting enough of their profits into developing new sources of energy. Link Read the interview and try to imagine the usually bland Orrin Hatch saying such uncharacteristically harsh things.... Posted by: Slublog at June 10, 2008 12:48 PM (R8+nJ) I don't think he's against all domestic oil production per se, but he has said that he wants to let states determine what drilling can happen .... yeah, except for ANWR, where he is wrong, of course. The issue is, the R gov of Florida is dead set against drilling off the coast there (as was Jeb Bush, BTW). The D gov and D senator of CO are now opposing the oil shale development. When I lived in CO, there was a very conservative R governor and two R senators--and that was only 4 years ago. The GOP should just hammer the hell out of that D governor and D senator there. I don't think enough CA moonbats have moved to CO to make a majority of voters happy to pass up serious economic development opportunities while paying huge amounts for gasoline. Read the interview.....Senator Hatch is just firebreathing mad Fortune: Why do you consider developing oil shale such a high priority? Sen. Hatch: We have as much oil in oil shale in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado as the rest of the world's oil combined. Liberals and environmentalists can talk all they want about wind, solar and geothermal - all of which I'm for - but last time I checked, planes, trains, trucks, ships and cars don't run on electricity. 98% of transportation fuel right now is oil. Ethanol is the only real alternative, and we're seeing that ethanol has major limitations. It's pathetic. Environmentalists are very happy having us dependent on foreign oil. They're unhappy with us developing our own. What they forget to say is that shipping fuel all the way from the middle east has a big greenhouse gas footprint too. His stance on offshore drilling is initially strong, but then he nuances it to death with "yes, but..." comments such as we won't drill in "pristine" areas. Any guesses as to what's going to happen to potential oil production sites offshore once that caveat is offered? The inconsistency of his 'federalist' position and his stance on ANWR is a bit odd. Alaskans want ANWR drilled - so why now allow it to happen? Posted by: Slublog at June 10, 2008 01:09 PM (R8+nJ) 37
Just like any prospect of losing the war in Iraq is a delight to liberals (for the greater good of getting them into power), so also high prices at the pump is something they consider a plus all around. It is only when they are threatened with being removed from their place of privilege and power in government that these people will actually begin to consider the needs of the people they claim to so fervently represent. It amazes me that the American public does not put this together more easily.

Cheap. Good. Fast. Pick any two. Yes, I said he's wrong on ANWR, and could be presented as weak on the FL oil because he would defer to the governor of the state. Unfortunately Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist think oil rigs offshore would be terrible, kind of like Romney joined with Kennedy and Kerry to oppose the wind farm off the coast of MA. BUT that shouldn't stop the GOP from hammering the issue in Colorado at least. Coloradans elected Salazar and Ritter, and really should understand what they got by doing so. I wanted to see if the Gallup Poll was reported. I found this “analysis of historical Gallup Polls” that somehow missed the Gallup Poll released a week earlier.
Record Gas Prices Could Hurt McCain June 9, 2008
More Americans now view energy as a serious concern than at the low point of the 1979 energy crisis, according to a Politico analysis of historical Gallup Polls. And the percentage of voters who consider energy issues “very important” in determining their vote has also risen dramatically since the last election, from 54 percent in October 2004 to 77 percent in a recent poll released by The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press - a percentage point increase nearly double that of any other issue.

Unfortunately Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist think oil rigs offshore would be terrible, kind of like Romney joined with Kennedy and Kerry to oppose the wind farm off the coast of MA. Actually, it's not like that at all. Romney opposed putting a wind farm in Nantucket Sound, one of the biggest tourist mecca's in the northeast, for fear of harming a huge money maker for small businesses and the state. He instead proposed putting it either on the islands in Boston Harbor or in the commercial shipping area of Buzzard's Bay, each of which would be cheaper to build and maintain and provide the same amount of energy. I haven't seen Crist or Jeb propose alternate drilling sites in FL for the oil. There you go, Slu. Facts are a trixy thing. Posted by: JackStraw at June 10, 2008 01:40 PM (VBon8) 52

I think there's about a dozen states that could be allowing drilling. If a state governor won't allow drilling, there's the rest to pick up the slack (plus or minus). Plus, tons of state income. A skilled governor/House candidate can communicate how much money Floridians would see from drilling, and win the argument. Florida is currently teetering on the edge of financial collapse. Repubs could kick so much ass this fall if they only had the brains. They could pick up several House seats in coastal states if they went balls to the wall with Slublog's suggested line of attack.
