It's not exactly new technology, and I guess someone didn't keep these sensors well sealed. It's such an expensive loss that whoever is responsible for the maintenance ought to be relieved unless this truly was a total fluke.

They lost it when the left wing touched (not that they exactly had it prior to that). The control surface positions showed theyhad full right aileron and rudder, but it wasn't enough to counteract the drag and loss of lift on the left wingtip. Training wheels might help prevent these kind of accidents.

Just a thought -- with the ton of money invested in that piece of equipment, could we also invest some money in better camera work to document these events? My grandmother does a better job recording the kids.

When this kinda stuff was done mechanically, it worked pretty well. Maybe we need some simple mechanical sanity check systems.
The programming is/was obviously fucked up too and not constantly asking itself "is this a sane thing to do during this flight phase?". Within seconds of takeoff, your altitude obviously can't be high enough to initiate violent aileron motions.

I guarantee more than just a uniform sensor preheating regimen will come out of this. There will be sanity checks applied to requested control surface movements before they're sent to the actuators.

Well, $1.4-2 billion includes development costs. Each new one would cost less...but still, if we up it to an even $1,000,000,000, just think...instead of having only 20 of these babies, we could have thousands of them for the amount we've spent in Iraq! :-(

Had the government bought the full contingent of these sweet babies, the average cost would have been down in the 125 to 150 million dollars each. Not chump change, but less than a 747 or 787 airplane, and way way way less than the average flight cost of a space shuttle.
And it was an important stepping stone on the way to higher technology. The future is not cheap, but it's worth it. Google it.
But the future is awful if all you try and do is wealth re-distribution. That solves no problems, and does not make the future of everyone's lives better.

Maybe- just maybe, mind you... this will spur the USAF to actually have pilots flying their aircraft, rather than computers. Yes, I know the B2 design is inherently unstable and requires a computer to compensate.
But what I saw in that vid was a classicdeparture stall, plain and simple. You'll note that the first airplane used a lot more runway to get airborne... the second B2 yanked off the ground at a high angle of pitch and promptly stalled. The pilot dropped the nose- as he should have- to gain airspeed but he was too low and too slow. And then he pulled the yoke back again because the ground was coming up at him, a natural reaction but absolutely the wrong thing to do. He then wallowed about with no aileron or rudder control because his flight surfaces were in null airflow...
I don't fly high-performance kerosene burners but I have 1200 hours in small aircraft that actually require the pilot to FLY them and I've seen the exact same scenario played out more than a few times.
The pilot of that B2 was certainly more qualified than I will ever be but blaming that crash on a "damp sensor" leaves me wondering...

It looks like it was a perimeter security system camera, much like you'd have at your local department store.

But seriously, sometimes the fly-by-wire systems do fuck up but I'm pretty sure that in similar type aircraft they usually have significantly lower accident rates than the traditional direct control systems. Wouldn't really be very reassuring though when you're in the pilot's seat and the ship is doing things you didn't tell it to do.

I agree, I can't think of any scenario that would warrant that control input.
Except perhaps trying to "hop" over another aircraft landing the wrong way. Oh I forgot,this is the military and not my nutty backwoods uncontrolled airport where they do that all the time.

I'm guessing that those two flight officers bought the life-support maintenance techs for that aircraft some very expensive thank-you gifts. (Life support techs maintain aircraft ejection systems.)

Was gona comment on this yesterday... it's interesting reading some of the comments here; I was on the team that designed the Flight Control system on the B2, so I obviously won't say anything further... except that there *are* no ailerons on this plane. Aircraft with no tail combine the elevator/ailerons into "elevons."
