Yawn: Yet Another Successful Test of an ABM

This one taking out incoming missiles in the "terminal phase," the hardest phase to shoot a missile down, and of course the last opportunity to do so.

"Fireball, Fireball, Fireball!:" Two SM-2 explosive-kill missiles
streak into the sky in response to an incoming SCUD
(jargon-termed a "fireball")

Video of the shoot-down at Cuffy's link, available in all three popular formats: Regular visual, infra-red, and Predator Vision.

Contrasted with Barack Obama proudly announcing he'll stop funding research on ABM technology that "doesn't work."

Who you gonna believe, the Lamb of Chicago or your own lyin' eyes?

Judgment.

1 Hey, I said I would stop funding the stuff that doesn't work.  Obviously, this does work, so it's cool.

Now excuse me, I have a speech to give at the COde Pink meeting and I am going to promise them that I will eliminate funding to all weapons systems, regardless of whether they work or not.

But don't worry, I'm kind of lying to them.  But not you.  Promise.

HopeyChangey08!

5 Gee, if the system works so damn well, I wonder why they had to put up TWO missiles to do the job of one.

6 I think if Senator Obama has proved anything it is that he'll change his rhetoric at the drop of a hat, without shame, ignoring all that he's said before. As Bender said: "I can guarantee you anything!"

7 The damn thing works? This is not the unworkable missile defense systems I have known and opposed all these years. But I will continue in my opposition.

OT, but this gives me hope for the next generation.

11 From a technical point, I'm most interested in the "cross-range" aspect of the shot. Instead of a head on collision, this was a high deflection shot. MUCH more difficult to achieve. The ability to do this means you can protect a much larger area per launcher. Pretty interesting that they were able to do this with the SM-2.

Did I read Cuffy's post right, they made that shot with an off the shelf missile and it wasnt a head on shot?  Pretty cool.

Cant be right because this will never work.

Posted by: Steve #2 at June 06, 2008 03:53 PM (/7Sor)

15 Yep, standard Navy SAM. We're about to sell a shitload to South Korea and Japan as well for their new Aegis ships.

16 >>>Did I read Cuffy's post right, they made that shot with an off the shelf missile and it wasnt a head on shot?  Pretty cool.

Yeah I hope he explains that better.  I imagine he means that basic missiles were retrofitted with hunter/killer sensors.

Posted by: ace at June 06, 2008 04:03 PM (aEOLm)

17 I've written cuffy to clarify.

Posted by: ace at June 06, 2008 04:04 PM (aEOLm)

18 oh I see he did clarify... huh?  So the extra missile-killing capability was just provided by the ship's sensors and trajectory mapping programs and stuff?  Otherwise the missiles were just standard?

The one thing I learned this primary season is how just how far the phrase "shameless panderer" doesn't even begin to describe Barack Obama. Back in 2004, we all had a good time laughing ourselves silly over John Kerry's incredible bouts of flip-flopping, but compared to Obama, he's a man of unwwavering, rock-solid principle.

21 If "fireball-fireball-fireball" is an incoming SCUD, what's "lightning bolt-lightning bolt-lightning bolt"?

Posted by: Scott Free at June 06, 2008 04:10 PM (70HCY)

22 SM-2 Block IV's: recently modified to handle ABM duty. About 100 in naval inventories right now. The real workhorse as far as hunting-seeking goes is the Aegis ship's SPY-1 radar --- it guides the missiles all the way in for the kill. That's why it's such a short-range, endo-atmosphere solution (like Patriot).

Any chance to test this out on Maroksos Moulistitis?

24 Any chance to test this out on Maroksos Moulistitis?

Too easy. They are testing this on moving targets.  If Markos saw this missile coming at him, he would probably just turn around, drop trou and bend over.

Posted by: wiserbud at June 06, 2008 04:31 PM (IHbof)

25 This is bullshit, it was proven beyond all doubt in the '80s that this would never work.

C'mon, sheeple, the science is settled!

26 Obama said he'd cut funding to unproven missile technologies.  So I guess there must be some other missile defense programs around to cut.

29 It is a physical law that you can't shoot down missiles.  This was proved by important scientists like Walter Mondale.  The only way to stop an incoming missile is to negotiate with it.

Posted by: Lightworker McHussein at June 06, 2008 09:27 PM (qcmfH)

30 I will go with Obambi on this...after all, who better than him understands the concept "unproven".

31 "Given the photo above, let's play SPOT THE LEFTY PARADOX, kids."

Uh yeah, that was kinda the joke there.  This one has proven itself what, like 80% of the time?  I'll take those odds.  Must be some other unproven missile tech that he's thinking of, cause this ain't it.
