| Meet The Newest Darling Of The Left…Former Bush Spokesman Scott McClellanThey loved to hate him when he was working in the White House but now that McClellan has written a book that knocks the President, well it’s Countdown appearances all around! The Politico has his book and excerpts including:• McClellan charges that Bush relied on “propaganda” to sell the war. • He says the White House press corps was too easy on the administration during the run-up to the war. • He admits that some of his own assertions from the briefing room podium turned out to be “badly misguided.” • The longtime Bush loyalist also suggests that two top aides held a secret West Wing meeting to get their story straight about the CIA leak case at a time when federal prosecutors were after them — and McClellan was continuing to defend them despite mounting evidence they had not given him all the facts. • McClellan asserts that the aides — Karl Rove, the president’s senior adviser, and I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, the vice president’s chief of staff — “had at best misled” him about their role in the disclosure of former CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity.Rove was on Hannity tonight and basically said McClellan was a second rate player he doesn’t remember seeing much in important meetings. I am sure there will be a lot of that soon. The fun part is the left is naturally licking their chops to embrace McClellan. Olbermann said he will have McClellan on next week. Maybe Scott should remember what Olbermann used to think of him. This is from Olberman back in May of ’05 at the height of the false Newsweek/Koran story. I smell something — and it ain’t a copy of the Qu’ran sopping wet from being stuck in a toilet in Guantanamo Bay. It’s the ink drying on Scott McClellan’s resignation, and in an only partly imperfect world, it would be drifting out over Washington, and imminently. …The Newsweek story, McClellan said, “has done damage to our image abroad and it has done damage to the credibility of the media and Newsweek in particular. People have lost lives. This report has had serious consequences.” Whenever I hear Scott McClellan talking about ‘media credibility,’ I strain to remember who it was who admitted Jeff Gannon to the White House press room and called on him all those times. Whenever I hear this White House talking about ‘doing to damage to our image abroad’ and how ‘people have lost lives,’ I strain to remember who it was who went traipsing into Iraq looking for WMD that will apparently turn up just after the Holy Grail will — and at what human cost. That’s your new friend Scott. I hope the book sales are worth it. Comments1
I disapprove of these guys like McClellan and Stephanopoulos who are wholly creations of the presidents who made them famous, and wholly political in the sense they lie for their masters when they are in the WH, and stab their president in the back when they leave.
I am not talking about those who resign on principle, but those who take the gold watch and then write the trashy tell-all book. Posted by: icus at May 27, 2008 11:23 PM (kEbop) 2
Didn't he already write a book about a year ago? And wasn't there some criticism of Bush that he claimed later was taken out of context? And wasn't McClellan fired because he sucked?
Posted by: GRC at May 27, 2008 11:33 PM (b4R3L) 3
I agree with Icus, but the Bush Administration almost gets what it deserves on this for committing the sin of hiring him in the first place. Answering tough questions, he looked like a mix of the Pillsbury Doughboy and a deer staring into the headlights of oncoming traffic. Posted by: Lee at May 27, 2008 11:34 PM (HCy0N) 4
I hate to say it - but Bush halfway deserves this one.
At least a big factor, if not **the** factor, that allowed Scott McClellan to rise to this position was that he was the son of Carole Keeton Strayhorn (the state comptroller in Texas), an opportunistic politician who happened to have switched to the Republican Party at the time (at first a Democrat, later independent). There were more deserving people for the job and people from whom Bush would have been more justified in expecting loyalty. If he's going to hand the job to Scott McClellan, he shouldn't complain too much about the result. Posted by: AD at May 27, 2008 11:34 PM (vYzH/) 5
Why doesn't this surprise me. I think Rove was being generous calling him "second rate." More like 4th or 5th rate at best. You could tell from his press conferences that he really wasn't in the game and not even remotely supportive of the administration. Hell, Helen Thomas ate his lunch every time he was up there on the podium. Ari, Tony Snow and the current press secretary (sorry, can't remember her name off hand) never let the vultures get away with this shit. But "Mac" always looked nervous and fidgety. Was Andy Card the one who suggested this jackass be hired? I nearly did backflips on the day that Mac left, since he was so incompetent at getting the message out during what was a particularly crucial time period in Iraq. What a dick. Didn't the left do a similar 180 in the case of David Brock?

Meh. This has happened before too, and then it turns out that the press doesn't know how to read, and pushed stories that weren't in the tell-all books for the sake of bashing Bush.

Prayers For The Assassin started out with a purported Arab proverb, to the effect that a falling camel attracts knives.
When it was just one or two embittered partisans and George Tenet slamming Bush, we could ignore it; McClellan, not so much. I suspect that what he has to say about Bush's internal politics is done in good faith and will prove to be closer to the truth than, say, Tenet's memoir (Tenet being one of the actual policy-crafters who had himself screwed up). McClellan is saying in public what Bush's people think in private. Bush made a number of mistakes - in Iraq, yes, but mostly at home. Iraq has its good and bad points, and opposition to the effort isn't nearly the rallying point the Left thinks it is. The real defining moment in Bush's presidency is Katrina. Katrina is the black 9/11. Whatever Bush promised to the US, the deal the US made with him is that we would ignore the moonbats as long as he didn't lose a major city. It turns out we did lose a major city. I believe these "features" of Bush's administration have led to the faltering of the national camel - (1) an attempt to craft a political realignment, to counter the leftward drift of the electorate (2) distrust of everyone outside the inner circle (although here I'd agree he was mostly right) (3) excessive trust of friendly Republicans like DeLay (unjustifiable) (4) faith that the righteousness of the cause was self-evident (5) a general belief that reality should bend to his will #1 and #5 explain his support of illegal immigration (Hispanics will vote against economic populism); #2 and #5 explain Iraq (the Middle East is full of little brown Hamiltons); #1 and #5 explain No Child Left Behind (low IQ kids can be made into high IQ kids by making them take more tests); #1 explains the Medicare boondoggle and #3 explains the explosion of pork 2000-6. #4 explains why Bush has barely argued for any of his policies, good or bad. Add to this that Bush, personally, is a sucker for women who love him; this attitude got us Harriet Miers and the much-overrated Condoleeza Rice. The most telling phrase to come out of a Bush administration official is "reality based community". This referred to skeptics of Bush's proposals lest we forget. Bush won't go down as the worst president we've had; I expect his presidential bust will occupy the same shelf as fellow Texan Lyndon Johnson not far from Ulysses Grant. But he's certainly no Truman. Was McClellan as inept as he would seem? or wasn't the problem at least partially that he was (willfully) screwing up the message from the inside?

This one of the reasons I couldn't watch West Wing even though my wife liked it.
It angered me to see that the WH Press Secretary had such impact and influence as on the West Wing. They don't. In reality the Press Secretary is a glorified mouthpiece purposely kept in the dark to protect plausible deniability. They know little and have even less power or influence. For any one of them to write a book relating anything beyond personal interactions is just ridiculous. If anyone cared about their opinion they would have been an adviser instead of press secretary. Posted by: Rocks at May 27, 2008 11:56 PM (7rbe9) 16
Oh yeah, I forgot about #2, administration paranoia: this led to rampant cronyism. Miers was the ultimate "Caligula's Horse" nominee. Remember Miers? Remember Hubris's blogpost about Hugh Hewitt's "solid B+" sandwich? First choice for Alito's seat at the Supreme Court?
Posted by: David Ross at May 27, 2008 11:57 PM (AvUHE) 17
Cronyism is pretty much the only charge the moonbats make about Bush that I even half-way agree with.
Posted by: OregonMuse at May 28, 2008 12:09 AM (jyo/c) 18
This happened with Reagan, too, as I recall, i.e. a number of his advisers/staff bailed during his second term and had brief moments of glory when they released their tell-all books attacking their former boss. Naturally, the MSM featured them prominently on all the news shows.
Posted by: OregonMuse at May 28, 2008 12:14 AM (jyo/c) 19
In reality the Press Secretary is a glorified mouthpiece purposely kept in the dark to protect plausible deniability. Eh, depends on the particular press sec. Snow insisted on being in the inner-circle policy discussions and I think for the most part succeeded. Ari was definitely inner-circle. I agree that they're "mouthpieces" but they still need to be informed and on message since they're the primary spokescritter for the administration, and also need to think on their feet when they get a curveball from the press. Posted by: genghis at May 28, 2008 12:17 AM (HwY1l) 20
Scott McClellan is just a good capitalist. There is money to be made in Bush Derangment Syndrome. Just another fart in the wind from the left.
Posted by: Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman at May 28, 2008 12:20 AM (blNMI) 21
Given how crappy this guy was as a press secretary, I can see why he might be looking for a quick buck by pandering to the left's derangement.
Was McClellan as inept as he would seem? or wasn't the problem at least partially that he was (willfully) screwing up the message from the inside? Sometimes you wonder. Certainly anyone who thinks that Hurricane Katrina was some low moment in the Bush presidency is grossly ignorant of history and disasters in general. Yet it was the high point for the left, and the moment they managed to lever the country against President Bush. It was the brightest, most shining moment of the press in this century so far: they lied, twisted, distorted, and manipulated the public into hating the man they used to love. They did such a good job that even Republicans think it was a debacle. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at May 28, 2008 12:26 AM (7QZfU) 22
I would agree. History will treat Bush II a lot better than people think now.
Katrina is a foot note. The federal government isn't even 3rd responder let alone first. Most state and federal laws proscribe virtually all the things suggested by Monday morning quarterbacks. Hurricane Andrew was as bad or worse and no one blames the feds for it. The ineptitude of the state and most especially city governments is what will be analyzed in the future, it was their job after all. The feds did just about the same as they always do. Posted by: Rocks at May 28, 2008 12:48 AM (7rbe9) 23
So let's see ... The left gets one news cycle worth of glee out of a has-been who was never more than a half-ass even when people knew who he was. Meanwhile, we're increasingly likely to keep the White House in November because the Democratic base is fracturing in half.
I'll take that deal. Posted by: Raviv Vindaloo at May 28, 2008 12:53 AM (yFKZU) 24
@David Ross #13, wrt Katrina, that the Bush Administration or FEMA grossly flubbed it is simply left wing propaganda. The Federal response to Katrina, as were MS and AL state responses, was probably the most rapid and logistically best handled one in history to date 2005. What was flubbed was the press/PR, the Army Core of Engineers' role in the levee failure, the State of LA and the City of New Orleans disaster management. Had the total response not been as rapid and effective as it was, there would have been many more than 1000 dead in Greater New Orleans alone. IOW, the drive-by media coverage and footage grossly and possibly willfully misrepresented the actual work done by private donors, first responders, local law enforcement and, yes, the Feds & FEMA. FEMA is a logistics agency, afterall, not law enforcement nor a charitable organization. Posted by: Hank Rearden at May 28, 2008 01:17 AM (MNtTt) 25
I think Bush was playing hardball, and had little choice, when it came to the CIA's obvious near treason. Mcclellan was played. He never came across as nearly as clever as Ari or Tony, so he was just played.
He obviously didn't have the loyalty someone in his position needs to have. You can't have your press secretary leaking your secrets, can you? He's sold out. That's his right, and he had a tough job, but he's only proving that Bush was right to play him for a fool. Posted by: gohuckyourself at May 28, 2008 01:40 AM (8jYMc) 26
What is it with these egotistical marginal assholes who think they should write a fricken memior at 30 or 40 something? Who the fuck wants to read a Scott McClellan memoir? That's like reading a Dee Dee Meyers memoir. My guess is Scott McCellan is the most boring prick and the publisher had to something to move more than Valerie Plames bomb of a "memoir"

The longtime Bush loyalist also suggests that two top aides held a secret West Wing meeting to get their story straight about the CIA leak case "Suggests"? Did he know that the meeting was about the CIA case or not? If he did, did he mention this when he was questioned, or is McClellan admitting now that he obstructed justice when he didn't reveal it to Fitzgerald's investigators? Posted by: liontooth at May 28, 2008 02:31 AM (n3pxb) 28
topsekret, I don't get it either. It's as though they don't realize we're in a war, and our president could use a little fucking loyalty.
If he was aware of a legitimate crime, he was interrogated by Fitzgerald and had a chance to report it properly. He could get a secret meeting any time he wanted with John Conyers if he wanted another chance to describe crimes in the white house. But he doesn't know about any crimes. He wants to spread innuendo about suggested conspiracies because it will net him a few hundred thousand dollars. Who gives a fuck if that means it will inspire a terrorist or two, or demoralize one or two troops. Who cares? Scott wants more money! Posted by: gohuckyourself at May 28, 2008 02:50 AM (8jYMc) 29

I don't even think that the handling of the press was that bad re: Katrina.
That is to say, it was less that the White House didn't handle the press well than it was that the press has become unmanageable. The MSM and the left colluded to turn one of the most successful disaster relief efforts ever into a debacle, and they are now firmly convinced That It Is So. I have no doubt that schools are already teaching a variety of lies on the subject, and the lies have already achieved "everybody knows" status. I do wonder if we've reached a stage where urban legends and propaganda are, if they reach a certain level, immortal, simply because they spread faster than you can kill them off. Posted by: Merovign at May 28, 2008 04:03 AM (yi5TD) 32
Can someone define "longtime Bush loyalist" and how this applies to McClellan?? I'm not sure he was a longtime Bush supporter and he sucked as a press secretary. Probably one of the more glaring examples of why the White House allowed the narrative on the war to be directed by the media which directly effected those of us in Iraq and in Afghanistan in a very negative way as it emboldened the insurgents. Too bad Dana didn't take over after Ari. McClellan is making a quick buck and I hope that Liontooth is right about possible lying case. That would be sweet.

RE Katrina
Some of my teaching colleagues were criticizing President Bush in the aftermath. Usually I avoid discussing politics, but that time I pointed out 1) he had no authority to intervene or supersede 2) he urged evacuation 3) a navy ship was on its way 4) it was the responsibility of the mayor and the governor, and there were hurricane warnings in advance. They dropped the subject, at least in front of me. McClellan is simply a man without honor and probably without much intelligence. Posted by: goddessoftheclassroom at May 28, 2008 06:18 AM (gUyco) 34

These after-the-fact insider tell-all books never reflect well on the author. If someone was a witness to inappropriate conduct in the administration, the question becomes why did they not immediately resign? Why did they continue to work for the administration? It's not believable that they happened to have an epiphany only after they resigned. There are two common denominators with these authors: money and revenge. Scott thinks he can make a quick buck in a market that presently values Bush-bashing. But I think revenge is the real motivator. Bush is loyal to a fault. Scott was next in line to be P.S. after Ari left, whether Scott was up to the job or not. He proved he was not, and was clearly a bumbling, humorless, and inept spokesman. I am sure this was not lost on Rove, Libby and others in the administration, who probably did not hide their opinions of him. My bet is that Scott would like to get back at some in the adminstration who thought he was ineffective and incompetent and got the job simply because of Bush's loyalty impulse. Scott McClellan was the worst Press Secretary ever. Ever. His complete, gross incompetence is one of the reasons that the Bush Administration stumbled so badly in maintaining public morale and support for the military mission in Iraq, a mistake that nearly cost us that battle, and possibly the war. I didn't like his professional performance then, and this weak and petty jab after his fat miserable ass has been thankfully absent from public view for several years reflects extremely poorly on his personal character. Not that Bush hasn't mishandled some things, but that his job has been made ten times harder by the near treason of some department heads and individuals left over from the Clinton administration. Sullivan on McClellan, "deputed to be his spokesman" [his/Bush]. Remember St. Thomas More’s traitor? England’s Solicitor General, Richard Rich, testified that More had, in his presence, denied that the king was the legitimate head of the church. "Well, why, all of a sudden, if he had all these grave concerns, did he not raise these sooner? This is one-and-a-half years after he left the administration. And now, all of a sudden, he's raising these grave concerns that he claims he had. And I think you have to look at some of the facts. One, he is bringing this up in the heat of a presidential campaign. He has written a book and he certainly wants to go out there and promote that book. Certainly let's look at the politics of it. His best buddy is Rand Beers, who is the principal foreign policy advisor to Senator Kerry's campaign. The Kerry campaign went out and immediately put these comments up on their website that [he] made. ..." -Scott McClellan, during a press briefing, commenting on the release of Richard Clarke's book in 2004 Posted by: angler at May 28, 2008 04:41 PM (kSuu1) 63
Brendan: Note that Keith Olbermann, who used to vilify McClellan, is having him on his show this evening. Note further that a "real" insider's book on how the Bush administration got into and managed the early days of the Iraq war (by Douglas Feith) has been ignored by the liberal press, (no review by the NYT, for example) because it doesn't fit the liberal template ("Bush lied"), while McClellan's does. Naturally, the quisling gets all the atttention---from the libs. q.e.d.

Telling yourself something over and over doesn't make it true. And angler: nice find. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at May 28, 2008 05:26 PM (7QZfU) 65
Oh Brendan: Here's the review at Amazon.com: "McClellan has finally come forward, as many other people from the Bush administration have over the past few years, to tell the truth about the most corrupt and deceiving administration in our history. While many people are waking up to reality, reflected in our presidents all time record low approval rating, this book advances the much overdue debunking of Bush and his evil lying crooks in his administration. Being the former spokesperson for this administration gives McClellan's book a special poignancy and undeniable puissance. As if we needed more convincing, this country is in need of change more than at anytime in our past. Its the facts in books like this that have brought me to change parties and to reject the disgusting mess the GOP has become. The republican party deserves all the losses they have been experiencing, and will surely deserve being defeated this November. Bush is a war criminal no doubt about it. The fear mongering and manipulation of us American citizens will not work this time around. McClellan deserves to be commended for his honesty and the timeliness of this books release. " 100 of 160 people found it useful. You think those 100 are...conservatives? You, sirrah, are pwned. Posted by: fulldroolcup at May 28, 2008 06:55 PM (DEoYl) 66
Actually that review was written by me and those are my followers.

McClellan is no darling of the left. They hate him as much as the right, seeing him as a weasely opportunist trying to cash some bucks from bush's high disapproval rating:

Hey dog: you hear that the publishing house that's flogging Mcclellan's book is owned by a leftie financed by George Soros? Yeah, the left really, really , really hates McClellan. You and Brendan need to get a cabana.

Does this retard expect to get rich from this book? I wouldn't buy any book written by any "turncoat," regardless of his political party affiliation. My guess is this retard will never get hired for any job (not even at the Democratic Party). I wouldn't hire him for ANY job. He is a skunk and smells real bad! He will never surprise anyone else with a stab in the back. It would be expected. He was a horrible press secretary. He appeared uneducated when he got the job and never showed any improvement.
