A Remake Of Red Dawn?

How many ways might this suck?

The fact that this movie ever got made in the first place with the Soviets (remember them?) as the bad guys and the Cubans as the not quite as bad guys was a miracle.

Who would Hollywood cast as the invading force that American’s would rise up against? The Russians? Please. Some Islamic group? First, the idea that a terror group would invade the US in a conventional attack is laughable and it’s politically incorrect as all hell.

So beyond the normal ‘neo-Nazi’ or bad guys of undetermined ethnic origins, I think that just leaves China. Hey don’t laugh, one thing we learned from the original Red Dawn is that even after they get nuked, there’s still a shit load of them left.

Of course the most likely answer is after several years of an Obama utopia Bush and Cheney unleash their Halliburton and Blackwater trained forces to take over the country.

Actually, China would make more sense.  In the original book, the invasion is by "Pan-Asians" who are oriental.  The suden lack of military disparity could be explained by a Chinese breakthrough in nanotech, with the kicker that the Defense Department is prevented from developing its own nano-defenses by peaceniks.

But this being Hollywood, I'm guessing evil corporations/Republicans are to blame.

18 Red Dawn was teh Shit!  I am mortified with all the ways that this could go bad.  I mean, I would be happy with more tank on tank action and more realistic dogfights.  But yeah, if an invading Al Qaeda in America force is demonstrated enforcing Sharia law in San Francisco, then I think they would be on the right track as far as a concept would go.  Maybe Hugo Chavez and Iran can be the prime movers in such a plot.

Sad to say though, it will probably be Bush/Halliburton etc. as the bad guys forcing vouchers and denying abortions to doe-eyed benneton ad americans.

If it had come out before I got married, started a family, and launched a career, viewing it might have caused me to join the Marine Corp on the off chance that I'd get to kill someone who desperately needed killin'. But I'd have probably become bitter and demoralized in the end.........as we never have gotten around to invading Berkeley.

20 Ingredients of new and improved "Red Dawn"

1) Horrific terrorist attack leads to

2) Dumbass President and Satanic VP suspending all civil rights along with military enforced curfews which causes

3) Cancellation of all high school activities and the forbidding of rock and roll and all dancing until

4) Footloose Johnny Castle comes to Washington DC teaches the President's daughter and all the local teens to rebel by learning dirty dancing.

5) Johnny and the President's daughter form an incredibly talented dance troupe, "The Wolverines" and go on a secret underground tour.

6) It all comes to a head at "Red Dawn", the biggest underground dance competition in the US. The Wolverines win. The President learns tolerance and shows off a mean two-step. The Satanic VP is disgraced when during the big "Porno Polka" finale he's found to have no sense of rhythm at all.

The first thing will be that the homeland is undefended because all the troops are fighting in Iraq.

Bad guys will have to be Blackwater types who are contactors on homeland defense (since all the troops are in Iraq), they'll be attempting to capitalize on something the Chinese do with cashing in all their bonds (and/or, surely, some hope and change guy has just been elected and has declared he will disband them, and he has not yet taken office), and, of course, Israel/the Jews.

The leader of the Wolverines will be a Palestinian exchange student who has lots of experience with "the struggle" - he'll teach them how to make mother of satan out of confectioner's sugar and turpentine, and they'll become suicide bombers because they just have no choice - the Blackwater ops guys will have all kinds of high tech equipment like F-16s and complete control of the media through Fox News.  And they will no doubt learn the value of talking to Iranians and Venezuelans - the rescued pilot will be some Iraqi Shi'ite infiltrated in by the IGRC, and he will lecture how now they know what it was like, blah blah blah.

And if Ace takes this treatment to his Hollywood pals, I want 10% of the fee, eff a bunch of residuals.

In the late 1970's-early 1980's SPI had a game 'Invasion America: Death Throes of the Superpower'.  It involved a coordinated invasion of North America by a Soviet dominated European Socialistic Community, a Chinese dominated Pan-Asiatic League, and a South American Union.  The requirement was just that - the three corners of the world coming and no US navy.

Realistic?  No.  Fun?  Heck, yeah!  Right up there with 'Objective Moscow'

First off, thanks for serving CPT.  You better than most know how great this country is.

Second, the original was the shiznit!  It came out when I was in the Corps and our goofy-assed Platoon Commander had us all go watch it as a group, at the theater.  He had just come back from some anti-terrorism school, so he was all over this movie.  The Cold War was a different time...

I'm pretty sure H'wood will f*ck this up, just like they do everything else.

42 I have a great story line for the new Red Dawn.

The US. fighting machine is spread thin fighting Iran after Iraq. The 5th fleet gets taken out by Russian made hypersonic cruise missiles aka SS-N-22 Sunburn/3M-55 Yakhont. Iran is successful because the retards running our country in the past brought Russian tech to the US aka Mcdonald Douglas via request of Bill Clinton who helped them improve the design and sell out our military out giving Russia the advantage. With all eyes on Iran and the US. response heading to attack Iran the US west coast in left open.

China/Russia/ North Korea form an alliance and attack the west coast. Cuba and Venezuela are also included in the attack which comes from the south via Mexico and for fun add Mexico (who claims we stole the west from them but who stole it from the Indians). The alliance takes over half the US this time not a small area like the 80s Red Dawn but the west coast to the Mississippi river. The Atlantic command and all other US. military commands save the eastern coast to the Mississippi River dividing the US. With the aid of our back biting friends who think they are better than us but history records them with the most blood shed in human history aka Europe we are able  to take back the continental US. Let all citizens of the US with guns have fun guerrilla warfare. With we need more gun control go big bad Dems.. Make sure you add the F-22s and all kinds of cool military toys. Have big battles on land, sea, and air.  Include city fighting and rural engagements. If they did this right with great actors this could be number one at the box office for a long time.

Hi,

Below is an interview that we conducted with Writer / Director JOHN MILIUS regarding his opinions and role as narrator of the upcoming documentary film, BETWEEN THE LINES-   http://betweenthelinesfilm.com/  - APOCALYPSE NOW, and the possible remake of his 1984 film RED DAWN.

You may reprint this interview material if you wish.

JOHN MILIUS on BETWEEN THE LINES

SCOTT BASS: Okay, you've just viewed the documentary film BETWEEN THE LINES for the first time, what are your thoughts?

JOHN MILIUS: I loved it. The two surfers are such great characters. What's really remarkable is that the two sort of become more and more alike. At the very core of all true surfers, the core of our nature is that we really do not like authority. The film really captures that and it brought the war back and it really portrays surfing as it should be portrayed. You know, as an escape and as a culture. It's one of the best documentaries I've ever seen on the Vietnam era. BETWEEN THE LINES is the real deal. This is the soil from which APOCALYPSE NOW grew out of; it's a simple as that. The surfers go out and they do it, you know… they live the whole Charlie's Point reality... the Colonel Kilgore experience (Laughs). It's just wonderful.

SCOTT BASS: There have been a few Vietnam War movies that carry in them a character or theme that's based around surfing? BIG WEDNESDAY, APOCALYPSE NOW, even PLATOON... Why do you think directors and screen writers have included surfers in their portrayal of the Vietnam War?

JOHN MILIUS: Well the Vietnam War was a California war. It was a clash of cultures between the United States and this far off Asian land. But even more than that, it was a clash between California culture and Asian culture. There was California music, and Hells Angels flames on Huey Gunships. It was a California war. I guess the surfer is a cliché for the Vietnam War in the same way that the kid from Brooklyn stuck in the B-29 tail gunner position was the World War II cliché.

SCOTT BASS: Is it true that surfing and surfers represent the ultimate freedom so the concepts are great tools for contrast?

JOHN MILIUS: Yeah I think that is part of it, but it is also the idea that the general public thinks, 'oh my God, when I go in the Army, I'm never going to do anything even remotely as cool as surfing.' Surfing is completely useless. There is no redeeming value, unless of course you are a surfer. In the army you can play football or baseball or box, but surfing is completely useless. But when you think about it, it's quite logical. I mean the concept of surfing in Vietnam makes perfect sense. There is an ocean in Vietnam. There is the South China Sea. There are waves in Vietnam.

SCOTT BASS: Why is the famous surfing scene that you wrote into APOCALPYSE NOW important to the movie? What did you want us to learn?

JOHN MILIUS: Well first of all, Colonel Kilgore subjugated himself to his hero Lance (surfer). Surfing is what Kilgore loved so to have Lance in his presence; it was like having Michael Jordan or Kelly Slater in your presence. Lance was a surfing hero and like in any other sport a sports hero has a tremendous amount of weight and a tremendous amount of respect. Especially as an individual sports hero like you have in surfing. You know, Kilgore is like, 'cool, I get to watch Lance surf." I love the idea of this mighty Colonel getting to be a kid again. You know he says to Lance, "I really admire your cutback and your nose riding." Of course it is still Kilgore's world. He takes Charlie's Point so the two of them can go surfing.

SCOTT BASS: That particular part of the scene, where did you get that concept?

JOHN MILIUS: The whole idea of blasting the VC off of the point so they could go surfing is an idea I got from Ariel Sharon. Sharon wanted to go skin diving near the Suez Canal. He had heard that there was a particular type of fish that lived there and Sharon wanted to go diving and see these fish. Sharon was like, 'I'm going to go down there and GET THEIR FISH!' (much laughter). Of course Sharon was going to be traveling by tank (laughing). You don't get much better than Ariel Sharon. If Ariel Sharon could have been a surfer he would have been. I'm surprised he wasn't because there is good surf in Israel.

SCOTT BASS: How do you think BETWEEN THE LINES portrays surfers in context to the average guy who had to face the draft?

JOHN MILIUS: I don't the average guy has the balls of either Pat (Farley) or Brant (Page). I mean these guys are surfers and surfers ARE unique. Look at (Mark) Martinson. He says, "I'm not going down to that draft board. I'm a fucking surfer man (pause). I'm a surfer. I don't hardly even wear shoes (laughter)." We are a special breed. And Farley is like that too. He says, "I don't mind killing gooks." We're surfers. We are individuals. You know Pat is the right wing side of it and Brant, you know, is sort of the left wing side of it, but you know that's part of being a surfer. But they are in many ways the same because they are individualistic. Surfing IS its own culture. It's peculiar. It's a tribal culture. It's not a part of normal society. We are different. We are branded. We can have jobs and everything else in society but we are different. It's almost a religion.

SCOTT BASS: Was the Vietnam era a significant turning point for surfing as a culture?

JOHN MILIUS: Yeah, because surfers basically went hippie. Man of the land type hippies. You know, guys on Maui chanting their mantra, living off the land, eating blotter acid, surfing Honolua Bay and in their down time contemplating the ultimate Brewer gun. Now, the other significant part of surfing during that time was people like Farley. The surf media just didn't publicize it. Surfers going to war for their country? What? They might have been viewed as slightly unhip. But they became hip again with APOCALYPSE NOW and now this film. Many, many surfers went to Vietnam. Some wanted to talk about it and others never wanted to talk about it. What is great in this film is that there is no condemnation for either group, going to war or not going to war. What is really powerful about BETWEEN THE LINES is that you can really view the era in the light of time and history. For me, this is my era, this is my generation. There is a time when you are distant enough from it that it becomes a piece of history. Like talking about the Civil War or World War I. You can see it clearly for what it is. It's almost like a sigh of relief. It doesn't have the weight of judgment anymore. The burden of judgment is gone.

SCOTT BASS: If there is one John Milius film, besides APOCALYPSE NOW and BIG WEDNESDAY, that a fan of you work should go see which one would you recommend?

JOHN MILIUS: Gosh I don't know. I like ROUGH RIDERS a lot. RED DAWN.  No. What they should see, I don't why it skipped me, they should go see CONAN! (laughter) CONAN THE BARBARIAN has it all. I mean it's got Gerry (Lopez); it's got Arnold (Schwarzenegger).

SCOTT BASS: There's a rumor floating around that your movie RED DAWN is being remade with a modern twist.

JOHN MILIUS: Well, (chuckles to himself) if Hillary Clinton gets elected President we wouldn't have to remake anything, it would be reality.

And one of the best parts about combat (melee combat) is that it is by far the cheapest of all three combat methods.Ranging costs buy runescape gold because it requires the use of arrows. Magic costs even more because it requires lots and lots of runes. But melee combat is relatively cheap. The only and runescape money for sale you must spend is on your weapons and armor. Once you buy those things, you don’t have to keep buying more and more stuff to keep fighting. As you gain levels in Runescape, you will be able to buy better and better equipment.
